Yes I've read that early morning while there is dew/ moisture on the vegetation makes it easier to mow with scythe. I've tried and it's true. Also if you can set the angle with point or leading end inward towards you where you can have more of a slicing angle it tends to cut better even with the finer grasses Enjoy your videos, Ole Texas Coot
As a novice Scyther myself absolutely agree that small stuff is harder to cut to a point. Technique and sharpness are a must make sure you have a good slice and not a pull. Also try playing around with the adjustment of the blade in relation to the snath that can make a difference as well
My snathe has 3 different adjustment points for the blade and I swear 2 of them make no freaking sense. I would love an explanation on those two options 😂

Great backyard for a good sized garden! My view point on a “yard” has changed dramatically in the last 4 plus years. We don’t even have a lawn here. We’ve put clover down in our soon to be fenced 50’x50’ new garden area we’ll be planting in next year. Different lifestyle than living in the city on a cul-de-sac in Oregon. We are blessed God opened up this opportunity to move us here to North Idaho ,even with the long winters we love it here.
My back yard has flowers and grass from about knee to waist high. I use a mower on the paths through it, just about one mower wide until the early fall, then down it will all come, with the scythe first.
Yeah if leave rows of grass it'll kill the part's where the grass is thickest (in the row) & stunt the grass trying to grow thru it. Now if it was spread out it'd add some nutrition back into the ground after it breaks down. Not going to try that in my yard, it's an acre in size. Lol Wouldn't mind doing it in what we call the hay field, it's 2 1/4 acres though lol
Push mower is great right now but not in a coming time when gas is too expensive or not available. So overall the Scythe wins in my book. Fun video. Thanks.
@@louisegogel7973 Yes, but I let the goats, pigs and poultry get it first. Currently, the piglets are using it to hide in. I also have other varieties of non-thorny amaranth in the garden for my use.
William, we have a 48" Zero Turn mower and that thin stuff is awful! I have to go over it twice in a different direction & sometimes three times! It just lays down.
With your 75 Hard Workout how would you count yard hockey tossing doggie tootsie rolls while scything??? 😂😂 Good time challenge. Keep cool, bro. Wu Tang out.
Why are you not leaving it on the ground to regenerate the soil in your backyard? A mulching blade would obviously make better material for this than a scythe, but it would still be great for your yard.
You should have a kind of a handle bar for your other hand, so you can use more force to uhhh..swoef it.. I have an antique one, if you would live in the netherlands, I would have given it to you..
You need to make up a nice traditional carrier out of bull horn. I have seen very nice holders made of carved wood, so that's an option. Remember, half the battle is looking good while you're doing it. If you haven't seen Rob Stephens' channel, I highly recommend it. th-cam.com/video/pGkSe9uP4pk/w-d-xo.html He demonstrates many different styles of scythe as well as other traditional trades in his back yard. He's not uploaded anything new in awhile, but his content is solid gold nonetheless. And, yeah, if you leave the windrows in place, they'll kill the grass underneath. It's just mulch, after all. What I prefer to do it gather it up and put it out on the bends, under trees, or wherever you need to keep things from growing. As long as you keep the grass piled on thick, it's a great weed barrier and dries to a nice light brown that looks good. The worms will make quick work of pulling it down into the ground to make a rich soil.
I love my scythe. The more i learn about the benefits the more i understand why i love cutting with it.
I generally scythe in the morning when there's still a little bit of dew and it makes the whispy grass a little easier.

I love ALL The Permaculture Consultant videos!
Thanks buddy!
I seriously doubt that I will be using a scythe to cut my grass. You are a hero to be able to do this.
Haha thanks man

The hay field might actually be easier! Thank you!
I imagined the neighbor looking out the window, seeing you and wondering what the heck is he doing?? 🤣

I don't think I would try to cut grass with one, but my back pasture is now sun hemp and thorny amaranth that would cut good with a scythe
That would be perfect!
@@ThePermacultureConsultant Lol. Now I just need to find a scythe.
Do you harvest the amaranth? It’s a delicious green, buttery. I use it with lambs quarters and broad or narrow leaf plantain and dandelion leaves.

To my dismay, I find it difficult to cut Bermuda with an ultra sharp blade and I haven’t figured that blade, yet.
THAT is a workout!!

A small flock of sheep may be good mowers for your yard.

Wu Tang out.
Thank you brother! It definitely counts when it's this hot out 😂
I'll stick to my lawn mower. Mine isn't a bagger, it's blow and go. I kinda look at it like chop-n-drop for grass.
That's even more efficient!

Looks like you shed a few pounds I will use my lawn mower I would cut my leg off with the thing Praying for your Sweet Family❤
Haha I lost a few pounds of sweat 😂

Just call it crossfit and I wager folks will show up and pay you to do it. lol. Jokes aside, good effort, good video.
Are you using the flat side of the honing stone or the curved edge?
The "flat" side. It was originally flat but now it's pretty rounded and conformed to the hollow grind.
where can I please get a scythe ?
You should have a kind of a handle bar for your other hand, so you can use more force to uhhh..swoef it..
Where did you get that scythe from? You have a link?
I wouldn't get this one. It's not the best made scythe and the original blade broke a while back. Check out Scythe Supply.com
Don’t you have a weedeater baby boy
