Just got outward the other day and I was having a rough time, I want to like the game so bad, but it's got such a huge learning curve. Watching your 2 beginner guides has actually made me optimistic that I might be able to play the game and enjoy myself a little bit more. Definitely the most useful beginner guide on youtube for outward.
This guide has held up very well, even with the Definitive Edition and I am glad to have found this and part 1. No nonsense, concise and well structured. Thank you for the two videos :D
Thank you. Got the game last week played for 7 hours straight on Saturday. Got a lot of good tips and understanding of what to do and what not to do. The fact that I don't have to fight everyone is also something to consider. I really like this game a bit tough but its fun.
I played for 4 hours the other day and most of it was just running around/gathering/crafting. Yet it was a blast. The combat is super clunky though which is a huge shame. Old school is fine but that doesn't mean the combat mechanics need to be aged as well.
I hate that these original videos have been buried by the algorithm by newer content. I know the game has been patched over the years but many of these recipes and tips still apply
This is a great guide, thanks for sharing. :) I almost hated watching it though because I haven't started playing yet and seeing the various locations and enemies felt like spoilers! lol
While I am loving this game so far the most offputting thing would have to be the weight management. Just to have all the potions, recovery items and varnishes along with tent, pick and harpoon takes up most of my bag. Add the alchemy kit and cooking pot and thers little room for farming even with the 110 carry weight backpack.
It's why you have to use the stash in your house. Do dedicated farming runs with the knowledge you learn along the way. What I'll do is, farm the area I'm on, store everything I don't need, then move to the next area and farm it, rinse and repeat. Part of the game is avoiding combat as much as it is taking part in it. You wanna farm? You're probably going to have to dodge and weave. Example being, do combat, clear the overword and dungeons. Go back to town and rest for 3 days. The items in the overworld will respawn but the enemies won't, so then you can safely leave everything at home and just run around picking everything up.
My problem with this game is that the devs want the experience to feel like you're a "normal guy" in a generic fantasy world. Which is fine, y'know being underpowered isn't a bad thing or having to outsmart your encounters aren't either. But the game doesn't feel like it gives you that option. Trading hits as a "normal guy" doesn't seem very good. But 90% of the combat is just that. Especially when enemies don't react accordingly and only stagger after like 6 hits, least with the sword. Half the time I will go for an enemy with a strike that should connect and give me an advantage, but since the AI has absolutely no self preservation and can just tank the hit, it will immediately start it's attack as soon as I start mine to then poise through my attack and then hit me with their own. It's not a satisfying encounter, and it doesn't feel like there's much depth to be had when it feels this obtuse. I don't understand the excuse "normal guy" and then move like a drunk with brain damage and no motor functions beating people with pool noodles. Maybe it's because my character doesn't have good gear but wow is it a terrible first impression.
Man, this game is so complex it's a little overwhelming. I don't know how I'm gonna be able to remember all this information and apply it in my game. I just started playing today, so I've just been trying to take all of this in and I can honestly say I'm a little concerned if I will ever be able to fully grasp all of this. Idk man, thanks for these videos though because without them I'd be completely lost.
Hope you're doing better now. The combat is clunky as all hell. Which is really too bad. Big thing. Keep your guard up since it soaks up 100 percent of the melee damage just eats up your stamina. Before you head out on your adventure just make sure you're prepared(potions, food, bandages). Most of all.... Have fun. It's just a game.
This game isn't supposed to have easy combat that makes you feel like a god, it's supposed to be realistic and brutal - fighting in real life is "clunky" a.k.a messy and horrible to be a part of. You will likely get hurt or killed, not take down a thousand enemies over a few days. This helps show how dangerous and overwhelming it is to be an adventurer. Think about it - if you took one of the best knights from some kingdom in our world, facing down five people with pitchforks and rocks at once is incredibly risky, let alone those with actual swords, axes, spears and bows. You have to work to obtain victory in this game, which is why actually winning fights is so satisfying. If the combat was easy then this would take away all the skill and effort that makes winning a fight feel like such an accomplishment. In real life, clearing one cave of a dozen bandits by yourself is something you can be proud of for literally the rest of your life lol
You make great and informative guides Churchy! After trying both your speed is king and highlander builds I've been inspired to tinker with different build ideas. (love how silly the speed build can get with someone doing a similar build in co-op) Currently I'm trying to make something effective with the elemental discharge combined with great rune blade. any tips on good ways to figure out mana balance (either on a magic overview or as a response) would be appreciated.
I may do a magic overview guide at some stage. Interesting you mention elemental discharge, The next build video I'm making includes elemental discharge as a big part of the build. For now I'll just say focus on reducing your mana cost % and consider using a few other projectile spells to maintain damage output while ED is on cool down.
I appreciate your guides for Outward. Me and my brother recently picked up the game to test it out, and your starting out guide helped us get geared decently for the start as we found ourselves constantly getting slaughtered by bandits in the starting zone. My main issue however in regards to combat is that when I strike an opponent (and hit them) they don't get staggered back or anything, they just start hitting me? Do you have any tips in regards to combatting this? I mainly try to bait out their attacks and then hit them, but even then sometimes they just miss their first attack, and then I hit them, then they just start hitting me a split second after I have hit them which is causing a lot of frustration haha.
The amount of prep you have to do, and the amount of patience you need while fighting even 1 enemy let alone multiple, makes this game really difficult to get into. I started couple of days ago and I've "died" in almost every fight. Quite frustrating.
@Tony C I have to agree here, I was just hearing so many good things about it. Might play it again if I have somebody to play with, but solo is really frustrating.
Word of advice, if you’re finding it too hard, first cheese the things you need to kill using traps etc to get the stuff you want, then use split screen to get the good items to a new character and play through it like that. It becomes much easier.
Good Guide but i would never waste a bolt varnish on a shell horror unless im speed farming the cabal of wind temple in enmerkar where the 5 horrors are i just use a bolt rag for a single shell horror. nice job though!
VexionZ II Yeah, outward has a lot of potential to cheese your enemies. I’ve been using a manticore dagger and if you can sneak up on enemies and pull of a backstab, the majority of enemies drop dead or allow you to stagger right after and kill them. It just makes combat so easy but so fun
What exactly do we have to do in this game 🤔🤔 and how to know where I have to go and meet. Because I just started yesterday and I get the direction where to go who is who and no map like Skyrim its just show N E W S direction but its hard to find which is which shope and soo on..
My only annoyance with combat is that you can get jumped out of nowhere and get murked when they are faster then you. Stupid wendigo camping out by the entrance of the conflux mountain, I had to run all the way around the mountain to avoid its aggro to get to the forest.
I want to start this game... but idk man lol. Im on the fence. The graphics is giving me that Arch type of vibe which I didn’t like. Also the combat seems kind of... uhmm how should I explain this... the movement looks outdated if that makes sense
I really tried my best to enjoy this game, but I just can't... I used your guide, got cool weapons, started beating few enemies, but it just feels like a giant slog... map is so big and empty for no reason... I really feel discouraged to explore or go anywhere because it's just walking walking walking walking... If they want to get rid of fast travel fine.. but make traversal fun then, because constant walking is opposite of fun...
I really want to like this game...I've tried it multiple times and it's enjoyable but makes me rage so much which is saying something having beat ds 1-3 bloodborne, and elden ring..I dint k ow what ti do about it
I have wanted to like this game so much. But I find the combat so infuriating. I have yet to kill a single enemy after at least 3 hours in the game. EVERY TIME I end up in a fight I die. My damage output is 0-none and the damage I receive makes me die in like 3 hits. Also to add on, I died one time and spawned in some house at night, surrounded by wolves, and died immediately when i tried to fight them. More punishment for my lack of skill. Game just wants to turn me off any way it can
