  • Recently a Filipino-American TikTok star shared a dance video where a tattoo of the infamous Rising Sun symbol could be seen on her arm. This outraged Korean netizens, some of whom escalated the incident into racist attacks on the Philippines. This lead to the #CancelKorea trend in the Philippines. For the first time ever, we actually conducted two street interviews in Seoul and Manila at the same time to get both sides of the story. Let’s hear what people had to say.
    The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Filipino and South Korean population.

    • @octavia7408
      @octavia7408 3 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      @TheFandrian Easy to judge but if you look deep into history, it would be easy to understand. Sabah was ceded to the Sultan of Sulu by the Sultan of Brunei in 1658 for the former helping a victory over Brunei enemies, but the Dutch and Brits messed that up. Technically the Sultanate of Sulu owns Sabah if you honor historical land claims which you should do because you wouldn't want that 200 years from now to happen to your family. But since it's been a long time and that area has been populated by more people influenced by Malaysia, that's why the people there don't want that to happen but I'm pretty sure if the Philippines was rich and influential, the people there would not hesitate to be part of our country. Really as easy as that. Also Sabah is territorially closer to the Philippines more than it will ever be to Malaysia.

    • @kraykee
      @kraykee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      @TheFandrian So? A lot of filipinos would rather fight for our spratly islands, our government wants Sabah not us. Maybe some people from Mindanao want Sabah too because of their sultan but most filipinos would rather just drop the issue. There's no reason for you to bring that up here

      @아발란치 in this certain time Filipinos also have problems with other countries. We were and still under Neocolonialism from countries who shares hisory with Korea. We are still fighting, even if it means criticism against the government. Even with the Filipinos knowing that (because it's obvious in some historical kdramas) you cannot see Filipinos dragging that issue with this.
      The whole thing started because of racism. If only that particular Korean/s didn't say any racist comments Filipinos wouldn't have defended themselves and demanded apology. And take note Bela Poarch isn't even a full Filipino and she doesn't even live in Philippines. I don't see anything that could be a reason for those Koreans to ttack Filipinos beside Bela being a HALF FILIPINO. And one thing I even noticed, why is it that those Koreans didn't attack Poarch's other half race? Because they are superior than the Philippines?
      There are so many reasons for Filipinos not to understand this rude attitude towards our race but then, as you can see in the interview, they accepted the apologies of Koreans and didn't even made an excuse. That's just how Filipinos are. And for being like that doesn't mean we will always let other race ridicule us. We can also fight back and we will.

It was good that people are made aware with how the Koreans felt about the japanese rising flag. You may not understand why they're sensistive about it, it's just best to respect it and their culture. For us Filipinos, we are educated about what happened but the society chose not restrict any Japanese related things to us. And I think that it is the right thing to do. Because the sin of the father is no longer the sin of the child. To this day, the old Japanese soldier that treated us poorly are already dead. And no one there is to blame for what they did. We don’t hate japan, we hate imperial japan
      Just like europeans hating nazi germany, not hating germany
      I think the reason why Koreans have a more negative perspective towards imperial japan is because Japan kept stealing stuff from east asia rather than southeast asia because of the pearl harbor attack in 1941. They started asking for metal plates and bowls from normal east asian households for them to make planes and ships. They stole less from southeast asia because it was less efficient to carry the stuff all the way to japan. So in southeast asia, people there are rather more positive towards japan then koreans are. We are not forcing other people from other countries to study about our history, but it would be nice to respect each others opinions

I'm just asking out of curiosity

      The Philippines, along with Singapore, Malaysia, and a LOT of other Asian countries, were under Japanese occupation during WW2 and an estimated 500,000 Filipinos died during that time (1942-1945).
      Korea was a little different. It was under heavy Japanese influence (by force) from 1875 and officially occupied Korea from 1910. Their rule lasted until 1945.
      During this time the Japanese tried to get rid of the Korean language, culture and steal as much natural resources, women (comfort women), labor (forced to work or fight for the Japanese military) and crushed anyone who disagreed with their rule. Many people suffered and died trying to fight for independence. It would not be wrong to say that Korea suffered more because of Japan than other countries in Asia that were only occupied during WW2.
      However, I agree with most people here that this topic is way overblown.

Places like Taiwan the Micronesian Islands and yes Korea were colonized as they had been under Japanese rule in peacetime for more than 10 years. The Philippines was only invaded and occupied in war time for the better part of 3 years and even then they didn’t even control most of the islands probably like only 12/48 provinces. But anyways yeah….lol The Spanish and Americans yes I can say they colonized us but the Japanese only occupied us

      I am Korean, and I feel that there is definitely discrimination between the rich and the poor in Korea. It's different from racial discrimination, but I feel that there is discrimination based on where you came from and which country you came from. However, Korea also had a time when it was very poor after the war. There must have been other countries that looked down on Korea at the time. Korean society should reflect on these areas. Of course we can boast of our rapid economic development after the war, but we have to be humble; Southeast Asian countries will also have to get rid of the stereotype of Korea. If we try to see the bad things of others, it will look endless. Always look back on yourself. As an aside, in Korea there is a word called gukppong. It means that you are drunk on the pride of Korea. The more time passed, the more I had to use those words. As a result, self-esteem becomes excessive and ignores other countries.
      Korea is doing well after the coronavirus outbreak,
      BTS and Black Pink swept the Billboard chart, Director Bong Joon-ho received an Oscar for Parasite,Korean dramas dominate the Netflix ranking, webtoons gain tremendous popularity, Korean cosmetics gain worldwide popularity, and Samsung, Hyundai, and lg logos can be seen anywhere in the world. I will talk about the background of the Rising Sun Flag issue.This issue started suddenly after the 2010s. After a South Korean soccer player(Ki Sung Yueng) scored a goal in the 2011 soccer match between Japan and South Korea, he imitated a monkey to insult the Japanese. After the match, he was criticized for it, but he made a false excuse on social media. "I cried when I saw the Rising Sun Flag in the spectators' seats. Before I am a player, I am a citizen of the Republic of Korea ..." (Even though there was no Rising Sun Flag in the stadium at that time ...)
    However, in South Korea, he was sympathized on the contrary, and then the Rising Sun Flag began to be regarded as a problem. The Rising Sun Flag issue began with the lie of a South Korean soccer player.
    In short, this issue is an anti-Japanese story created suddenly by modern South Koreans. Until then, the people who actually lived in the era when Japan annexed Korea did not consider the Rising Sun Flag to be a problem. Anti-Japan by South Koreans is too unusual. The Filipino girl with this tattoo doesn't have to apologize at all. The Rising Sun Flag hunting that South Koreans are doing all over the world is just a blasphemy for freedom of expression.

      agree . im a filipino and ive worked in korea for 3years 2018-2021 . but no im not a factory worker, im actually a CAD technician working for a machining company in ulsan .. and in 3years i learned some reality about korea..especially their hatred about japan.. SOUTH KOREANS DONT HATE JAPAN AND ITS PEOPLE .. BUT THE REALITY OF IT, THEY SEE JAPAN AS THEIR COMPETITOR IN THE REGION... THEY SEE JAPAN AS THEIR CULTURAL,POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC COMPETITOR... ACTUALLY MANY KOREANS I KNOW NO LONGER THINK OF THE HISTORY.. YES THEY RECOGNIZED JAPAN AS THEIR FORMER COLONIAL MASTER BUT THEY NO LONGER GIVE SERIOUS BUZZ ABOUT IT....... THEY ALSO MADE IT APPEAR THAT THE RISING FLAG SYMBOL IS AN OFFENSIVE SYMBOL ALTHROUGHOUT EAST ASIA, BUT THE REALITY OF IT, CHINA AND CHINESE PEOPLE DOESNT EVEN GIVE ANY DAMn about that symbol..even taiwanese people.. thats why im so surprised why korean netizens are attacking filipinos over this issue..
      Which led me to think it has something to do with the another Thing i found out and learned about south korean culture and society. They are racist to filipinos...and they are just using this rising flag issue to hide their true intention which is just to racially attack filipinos and to have justification why they are angry .. for example, its so funny that if they see an austronesian looking guy and hes dark, they automatically think hes filipino, if youre south east asian and youre black and your nose is flat, YOURE FILIPINO! if youre white or fair skinned and youll say your filipino, THEY WOULD RATHER BELIEVE THE MOON IS FLAT OVER BELIEVING YOU SAYING YOURE A FILIPINO..
      and if you walk in public and they know youre a filipino, trust me , all eyes are on you.. we experienced that every time we go out.. we experienced it from ajummas!
      and they are very racist to indonesian, malaysian and filipinos, but they usually target filipinos, because koreans visit more often philippines , and also korean media portraying filipinos in dark ways.. for example, thai and filipinos have similar native accent but they often make fun of filipino accent over thai despite the similarities, there was one time i was listening to a local radio station in ulsan , the radio dj was sharing her story about her trip in thailand and she pointed out something she noticed in fhailand, EVERYONE speaks filipino language, and then shes using the laugh audio background to make it funny..and her co dj sarcastically mimic a filipino accent to make it even funnier..
      and also, every time we go out with my fellow filipinos and we speak our local language, i often hear some stupid korean mimicking our accent

At that time I already felt the racism, well I wouldn't say that just some of them are like that, and I wouldn't also generalize korean people, but I'd rather say many of them are racists.. They look down on Filipinos, they think they're above us, that's why now, whenever I had chance to talk to koreans and I'm feeling that he/she sounds discriminating me, then I talk to him/her sounds like he/she can't degrade me just because for him/her I'm just a Filipina and just because he's/she's korean.. We're all human so no one is above us, we're all just equal, that's what I always remind to myself, we have no right to discrimate and be discriminated..

      @Fides Like I said I am not a Japanese. Have an eye problem with my previous statement. Get your facts more detail Yasukuni visit is more about respecting older generation not focusing about respecting the war crime. Oh maybe you don't know that yasukuni is restricted for visit for nowadays. Oh ofc not since you ate to much politics. Imagine having your father as criminal but you don't have any respect for just a bit for raising you to have different view with your father and change the country now. You keep dodging from framing current generation which I have seen with my eyes. Yes, even the current generation doesn't know much about history because they arent interested in history, they feel responsible with Koreans in their heart. Differentiate between the government and whole citizen. You keep making misleading framing. Like I said just go to any native japanese street interview with fellow japanese don't keep barking to all comments here. Even include negative answer like an elder answer don't like korean in the one of those interview because he said they were loud. But in majority they are good with korean especially young generation. You are the one who will forbid those countries to be in peace. And it's not only me, I see many non Japanese (foreigners) decline about massive korean hating propaganda based on their experience. Addtitional info, it is mostly korean who go rampage on internet comments when talking about Korean-japanese. Confusing me who really hates who lmao. Even in Quora people keep asking about Korean Nationalist Keyboard Warrior
