we can't fix other people, we have to start with ourselves. and being a Filipino, our greatest hurdle is Colonial Mentality. it is fed to us first from our home, in our school and then our society.

I'm Filipino by blood but born and raised American. Something I've noticed, especially about the older generations of my family, is that there's a lot of passive racism ingrained in their mentality. They don't actually hate any race or ethnic group--in fact, they're quite generous to anyone they encounter--but they are very forthcoming about which skin colors and facial features they consider attractive and unattractive. They will literally welcome dark-skinned people into their homes and give them food and hospitality while also commenting that lighter skin looks better. It's so jarring to witness.

The problem with millennials and young generation is they can't differentiate preferences from racism. For example this one find it jarring that the elders welcomes and are nice to black people, but they find white attractive. That doesn't mean your elders are racist. That's their preference. If you like US cars more than Japanese car, and you buy a Ford instead of a Toyota, that's your preference. You're not being racist or discriminating Japan. As simple as that.

The Germans after WW I were well educated and yet many participated in the Holocaust. The Red Guards were educated but they killed a lot of their fellow Chinese during the Cultural Revolution. Many of the Soviets who participated in the Ukrainian Holodorm were educated and yet their policies killed somewhere between 1-2 million Ukrainians. The Khmer Rouge killed how many in the Killing Fields and many who participated were well educated. Education without moral and spiritual guidance won’t get rid of racism. Being Woke, Progressive and SJW only make things worse.

Some of the people I know who are racist to other races seem to turn out that way because they experienced discrimination themselves. Like, an uncle who worked in Japan have been refused entry in some shops with signs that said "No Filipinos Allowed" so he's formed a prejudice against the Japanese. And some friends who are deeply angered with China's adamant claim of Philippine territorial waters and islands that they formed prejudice against the Chinese. It's sad that prejudice against a whole race can stem from isolated experiences or events, failing to look at the much greater good that often goes overlooked.

I’m married to a Caucasian, and I’ve experienced racism when my husband and I moved to Colorado after living in California all my life. I've traveled within the US, including in the Southern part, that racism does exist. I’ve also experienced discrimination when I go to China, Korean, or Vietnamese town here in the US! I think everyone is racist in their ways! There are many forms of racism, and I think most are not intentional, but through ignorance! The way you handle it is to ignore, move on, and try not to take it personally! Instead, through education like what you're doing now! One day, everyone will realize that we are all equal, especially in God’s eyes (young, old, poor, rich, white, black, brown, and so on)! GOD made us unique in every way! May God bless us all❣️🙏

Well, you have the best opinion ever. Racism today is more of a form of "Bullying" rather just a plain racial differences. Racism or Bullying are both cause by poor parenting (50%) and the rest, the environment where a person spend his/her time outside their home. "I think everyone is racist in their ways" ... this one is absolutely true, I may have to plagiarize this and make it my own quote. LOL

    • @yootoober2009

But when "racism" is applied in housing it becomes oppressive. Being rejected housing because of skin color is horrible. Being turned down for pilot training in the military because they think your kind will never learn how to fly much less fight in a million years is despicable. Getting killed for being in the wrong skin in the wrong neighborhood is what I call racism. That is what is being stoked in this country today... All the other forms of discrimination are human traits that can be removed or lessened by education as Nelson Mandela says... Getting even and revenge are also human traits, how do you lessen or remove it from the oppressed?

In the topic of racism I think that yes we as a nation have a long way to go. We aren't perfect and we will never will be and that's ok because people make mistakes though yet, I think that we should start evaluating this topic and find ways to solve this problem that has been deeply rooted in our culture as a whole. Small steps as the professor said and we can only hope that we can lessen it as much as possible. Anyway keep it up and I'm excited to see more topics about the Philippine and thank you for the perspective that you have given us.

Growing up, I witnessed light-skinned Filipinos bully and make fun of dark-skinned Filipinos in private schools. It’s weird because Filipinos are depicted as Asians with naturally brown skin. Today, sadly, many Filipinos are becoming more racist, especially toward Filipino-Chinese men and women with more prevalent Chinese features. The thing is, most Filipinos don’t even know that they’re racist. Racism is a serious topic and we need to educate ourselves further.

I have witnessed a few of my fellow foreign students studying at Philippine universities experiencing racism not just from students but from faculty unfortunately. It was a topic that was often discussed in our foreign student meetings. I think also colorism is a huge factor. Several of my pure Filipino friends get down on themselves about their darker skin color and they get teased for it even by adults. I remember when one teacher told me to wear more sunscreen "kasi parang hindi Americana ka na" as if getting darker was somehow a bad thing. I even said that the states is multiethnic. Daming ibang kulay...hindi puti ang kulay ng tao taga U.S.. Even my mother who is full Pinay gets on me about making sure I don't stay under the sun too long or I might tan too much. Salamat po for this discussion. I remember that origin story being mentioned in my anthropology class and my prof asked kung racist ba yun and I said oo po and she asked why I thought so which I said that the story makes it sound like the darker skin was a mistake.

I grow up suffering racism from Filipinos, well, I'm a half Filipino Half Nigerian but I was born and raised here so I am definitely a Filipino by language, actions, etc. And I'm telling you Filipinos racism to black people is totally severe, I grow for thinking my skin is really ugly. People here always calling me "Uling-ling, Nognog, kulot salot, Ita, negrita etc." even kids telling me that I am ugly because I am Ita or Negra! (This thing shouldn't be an insult and should stop making it as an insult) And the worst part of it is their own parents hearing this in their own child's mouth and they will just laugh about it so the kids thinking that what they doing was right, And even my friends calling me in these kind of nicknames made my self esteem low. I even afraid to go to other places because people will look at me weird like I'm not even a human. If you're a black especially when you're living in the province, expect the racism you will get there. Maybe Filipinos are hospitable, but they're racist as to all people even in their own race especially to our kabisayaan siblings and many more, to tell you the truth, I was also racist with them before because of what my surroundings think of them and then I thought it was just fine and it was a joke, but not realizing those kind of jokes is extremely offensive. Now I'm studying international school also here in the Philippines and for the first time in my life I felt that I am not different, I am Human! I'm not strange or weird, ppl calling me beautiful, now I appreciate my skin color and also I'm being educated about racism. Schools should also teach about racism because many people are so ignorant about this stuff like it's normal. Stop Stereotyping, Stop Racism!!! Racism shouldn't be a joke!!! Stop thinking you're cool for doing it.

I think most of the things that are discussed in the video is not racist except for xiao chua's experiences. If you are living in the Philippines you should know that people always use stereotyping and that's not racism. Racial discrimination as what happened to the black community in the west is not present in the country neither racial supremacy.
I know that there are discrimination in all fields in the Philippines but that is not racism as a philosophy or as a system. It is ingrained in the culture and we should change but to call it racism is wrong.
I do believe that racism is wrong because we have only one race called human race.
And don't say that we have equality because there is no such thing as equality. The only equality we have in this world are the unalienable rights given by the government and inherent rights bestowed by God, all other aspects of life are not equal.

Afterwards, I would answer that, "I guess we have a society that accepts racism." Then they would answer that I am insulting most Filipinos and I have crab mentality. ugh. SMH.

Filipino don't even think they are racist and more importantly some don't even know what racist is. Filipino will judge you base on what you do. For example if you are fat and wearing a bikini? They will judge you for wearing it. Thats what my aunt did when we went to the beach last summer.

I really feel this a lot in America where I get the same sort of things said to me but a backwards where other Filipinos will see me as less because I am mixed.
Growing up here, my mom coming from the PI a lot of what they said is reflected in the things my mom brought me up with.
She would say, “if I take you to the Philippines, you cam be a model because your skin is light.
Here, I think a lot of younger Filipinos are really trying to connect with their heritage but somehow it becomes about ethnic purity like the Prof was saying and I really feel like many Filipinos in America don’t really understand that we don’t all look alike and that we come from many different ethnic backgrounds.
And just like them in the PI, it becomes somewhat of an identity crisis because I also know who I am and I am Filipino. I have never identified as anything else.
What’s more frustrating is the idea that others are always trying to tell me what I am with the newest one being hispanic or latin when I know that I am not. I am Illocono.
Even with my mom being indigenous to the PI, here in a America, I can’t even get a traditional tattoo depicting her journey which is also my journey because it doesn’t fit the “purity” mentality.
Anyway. I really appreciate this so much because it’s an issue that I have felt and dealt with my whole life and it’s not just here that it happens.
    Salamet.

I remember when I was in Grade 7, my Teacher told us that his friend went abroad (I can’t remember what country it was) and then his friend went to a store with a lot of dolls , each doll wore a national costume representing every country in the world, they were all beautiful and exciting to see, my teacher's friend was excited about what the Filipino would look like but he couldn't find it, and then he asked the seller about it, but when the seller showed the doll to the one who represents our country---the Philippines, she was wearing a maid dress, and it really broke her heart.
See how other people in other country sees us.
So we must work hard for the good of our Country.😞❤️
Anyway, I was Grade 7 that time right, and now I'm already in Grade 12 and still can't forget that story. It also became my inspiration to study harder, I know I am just one of millions of Filipinos, but if we are united, we can make our country better.
