According to history, Filipinos started forgiving the Japanese when Philippine President Elpidio Quirino started freeing Japanese POW to return to Japan. Don't get me wrong, he was bashed by many Filipinos during that time because of the scars of war, but he simply brushed it off saying "I won't let this hatred be carried in the next generation". These words, coming from a man who's family was murdered by Japanese during the Battle of Manila. I think it was this time when relationship between Japan and Philippines started healing.
As of today, the relationship between the two countries are going strong.
In 2016, Japan built a stone memorial for President Quirino in honor of his deeds. It stands at Hibiya park in Tokyo, the same park where the stone memorial of Jose Rizal was erected.

The flag of the Republic of Korea produces the background
"Tai Chi" comes from the classic Chinese "Yi Chuan·XiCi": "Yi has Tai Chi, which produces two yis, two yis produce four images, and four images produce gossip." Assign the origin of everything. In the Northern Song Dynasty, a Taiji diagram composed of yin and yang fish was formed and became a symbol of Chinese Taoism. Therefore, it is generally believed that the Tai Chi picture in the flag of the Republic of Korea was introduced from China since the Goryeo era.

What is debt? They didn’t apologize directly and pay compensation for the Vietnam comfort women and thousands of people who are half Korean and half Vietnam so called Lai Dai Han even once.

Not a Filipino but Indonesian, my grandfather lived through Japanese occupation and fought in the Dutch-Indonesian war, and he never held a grudge against the Japanese or Dutch. I think I speak for most South East Asians when I say that we really don't care. To us, it's in the past, it should be remembered but the men who did it are all dead or old so why bother holding a grudge.
My grandfather would even get mad at us when we would blame the Dutch or Japanese, he would always say that you didn't live through what him and his generation did so you don't have a right to be mad. I think many people in other countries nowadays should think this way, it is useless to hold grudges for what your grandparents or greatgrandparents did so many years ago.

One fact about Filipino? We forgive and we are always ready to start new. We we're colonized by Spain for 333 years, 48years in American and 3years from Japan we were fighting for our freedom for hundreds of years but as you can see we are already healing and moving on as we embrace our enemies, our ancestors teach us not to hold grudges but they thought us to embrace our enemies. Filipino culture is FORGIVING we forgive easily and we always likes foreigners, but foreigners who look down on us? you have to face the wrath of all the Filipino who you disrespectfully called with unacceptable words.

During the first half of the 20th century, Korea was under Japan. A lot of Korean men were conscripted in the Japanese Imperial Army. Philippines was invaded and occupied by Japan. You have heard of Asian comfort women. I am willing to bet the "Japanese" soldiers who raped countless Filipinas and fathered a lot of children in the Philippines were actually Korean men serving in the Japanese Imperial Army. If anybody would care and do an ancestry check, they can ascertain DNA is indeed Korean.

one trait that can be seen as a double edged sword of pinoys is that we live in the present. we do not dwell in the negativity of our history. this is both good and bad because there's a tendency that we miss what our past can teach us, hence mistakes of the past can repeat or have been repeating. It is good because, we tend to be forgiving and more positive. There's a reason why inspite of our poverty are still one of the happiest nation in the world.

Unfortunately, from what I've learned in several videos as well about Japan, the younger generation don't really talk about WWII in their history class. In a way, it was "brushed off." Their knowledge of war would be more about shogunates, samurais, and Shinsengumi-but again, not a lot.
The older generation would have a bit more knowledge-some from personal experience, and some that were able to learn it in school when it was taught for a brief period. Not sure how that went down, but I'd hazard a guess in thinking that it puts Japan in a heroic point of view, and then playing victim, rather than them being in the wrong.

This is a very interesting conversation and I find it to be from my own experience. I'm a Filipino American who emigrated to the US as a teen and ended up marrying a Japanese American and I was asked once in college by an Asian grad student how my family felt about that. I was taken aback. It never occurred to me that there would even be an issue just because my boyfriend (now husband) is of Japanese descent. This is even knowing and hearing stories from my grandparents regarding their experiences during the Japanese invasion. They talked about their experience as fact with no commentaries on hatred towards the Japanese people. My grandpa was a POW during the war but he also befriended one of the guards. My grandma talked about how she and her sisters painted charcoal on their faces to avoid getting raped. I'm sure they were scared but she never said anything bad about the Japanese people. Mind you, my grandpa was very pro US and saw them as a saviors. He used to quote General McArthur all the time. In spite these stories, I got the impression as a child that it was war and it's what the Japanese gov't did and not the people who were in Japan who never took part on any brutalities that happened. So meeting my husband who was a 4th generation Japanese American who's families experienced their own injustice here in the US (my in-laws were in concentration camps during WWWII as children) I never connected him to Japan who invaded the Philippines. The sins of Japan was now his to bear.

As a Japanese, I have no intention of apologizing to Filipinos, Koreans, or Chinese. It is the old Japanese who should apologize to Asian countries, not the modern Japanese. The same logic that Japan does not want the United States to apologize for dropping the atomic bomb. In short, the past should be recognized as history, and it is out of the question to apologize or hate modern young people. What is important is how the two countries will move from the past to the future.

Akage Yone My reply to a youtube comment:
Pero tandaan mo lang na kaya mas di maka move on ang mga koreans sa japan dahil una, 35 years silang under japanese occupation, while philippines was just for 3 years. Mas ramdam nila ang cruelty ng japan at sinubukan ng mga hapon na burahin ang kanilang cultura while that didn’t occur in the Philippines (i am aware of bataan desth march).
Purika nope. With the current situation over korea and philippines, I’ve observed that us Filipinos don’t admit that some of us are being racist. You know? “Bumbay mabaho” “chinese tsekwa ching chong palaihe sa daan” “koreano bakla plastic” tapos kapag tayo ang na call out dinedeny natin. Wag tayo nag lalagay ng double standard. And even before the current issue, I’ve been hearing racist slurs towards koreans form Filipinos. I’m not dragging us down, but we shouldn’t be some kind of “oh we are just poor innocent country with lots of perfectly nice people that are not racist” our mentality needs to change.
Copy pasted from my yt reply
And to add up, korea was occupied by japan for 35 years as compared to 3 years of philippines, and they were brutalized even more. Japan never imposed japanese on us, but they imposed japanese to koreans. And to compare the 300 years of spain to wwii japan is off. Spain isn’t that much racist and brutal, not even close to what the japanazi did. Spain didn’t care what race you are as long as you are educated catholic (which is still bad) but japanese tought they were superior among all asians. So i kinda get why koreans get triggered easily, but still, in our defense, they made a stupid mistake and messed with us by throwing slurs and not realizing it could offend people.

@@matthewtenorioduenas202 Agree to some extent, it doesn't matter how many years it was even if we have shorter years in terms of colonization, brutality is brutality nonetheless. There's no more or less when it comes to brutality. And what do you mean isn't that much about Spain? That's the most disgraceful statement i have ever heard from a fellow countrymen, you know what colonization is, right? Did you know that Spain left the most impact in the Philippines, they pushed their ideologies to us, that is the same as brainwashing an entire country under one rule. If you think that Spain's only surface level even so if compared to Japan's, then everything that our heroes fought blood and tears for would be all for naught.
Just because they experienced it longer doesn't mean it's justified that they have "greater" grudge than us. Lives that are taken during those dark age is not a matter of how long a certain country holds it's empire, a life is a life regardless of nationality.
Never use that disgusting statement elsewhere, that's a disgrace for the lives that were taken and sacrificed for just the sake of power.

The Filipinos experienced so much atrocities from the Imperial army such as the death march and comfort women to name a few, but Mr. Raul and Mr. Dennis’ answer to the prejudice to the Japanese were very emotional and you can see how wide their understanding is when you listen to their reasonings.

Hi! I’m a Filipino and I am an elementary teacher :) I guess the reason why we dont despise Japan and their people is that they only occupied our country for a short period of time compared to the 300+ years under Spain. And overall reason why we don’t despise other colonizers is the lack of awareness. The way we are taught in history classes is parang lacking. We study it like it is a story that happened to others that doesnt have anything to do with us. Parang we somehow feel detached to it due to how we are taught in school. So yea 😊

    • @trashsanity3463
      @trashsanity3463 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I agree, with how most of us felt detached and does not seem to care about what happened in the pass. I don't hate Japanese, American, British and Spanish people, but they were part of our History and how it turned what is the Philippine is today. Though it is sad to think about how some or our History is removed and forgotten, it is nice to know what or how people lived here in the Philippines in our Pre-colonial History. I think we are just becoming to westernized, nothing wrong with that, but the history of the Philippines is vast and we have a lot to learn from it.

If the thought is for the learners to forge their values and goal formation, attachment to history should definitely be in the books. Learning, definitely, is different from feeling. Objectively, in my case of learning history, I tend to see it as learning from something that happened in the past. Nothing more. If we are going to digest everything and let us be consumed by the emotional distress that happened, how can we move on? Not generally a lack of awareness as the portrayal of the occupation is grave enough to remind us how cruel it is. More research and documentation? What more can we find than the harshness that happened. I assume we're only digging more into negative testaments based on its general principles. On the other hand, if we agree on awareness in the sense that we can use the past as lessons and how we can better ourselves, this will lead to a more inclusive and healthy sphere. Less reactive, more constructive. I think more than the lack of information, teaching the students how to use information and research to create a more inclusive community is ideal. For those who didn't get justice until today is a different story. They must be supported but bringing the idea to a larger scale would just create chaos. We sympathize not empathize. I am sure our lola's and lolo's wouldn't want their apos feel the same feeling they felt. To keep the story short, we don't despise because we lack awareness. We forgive because that's how our Lolo and Lola raised us to be. I am a Filipino and a high school teacher.

cing margen Alzarian you don’t know anything about your own land. America was planning to use it as a disposable battleground and supply route into invasion of Japan. If japan didn’t intervene, forced conscription and plundering would be a regular sight. Not to say, in their recapture , they used Filipino guerillas and lowered their own casualties. Americans involved normal citizens into the war and would bomb food sources. USA is also known for holding its colony as long as possible . Filipino have japan to thank for their independence.

The Question should be, "should the Filipinos hate Japanese though?"
Is Japan hurting the Philippines in any shape or form right now?
-No, Then why would we angry at them?
But they did? long long ago though.
    - Yeah, it was. If any Filipino was done wrong to them by the Japanese that are still alive. They have the right to be angry.
But like I said it was a long time ago. We are not the Filipinos who were hurt by them nor the Japanese right now are the perpetrators back then.
Aren't you at least angry for your ancestors or want justice for the Filipinos?
Did they Apologies to the Philippines? Yes.
Did the Philippines get Justice? Yes, Japan paid in Fine, Apologies, and Blood "Nuked by our Allies."
There is a saying that your friends can be your Enemy. But this saying is both ways.
Your Enemy yesterday could be your Best Friend Tomorrow.
The Past is Past, Heck I don't even know someone who hates Spain right now. And they colonize us for 333years.
Filipinos only see what is present and look up to the Future.
-Japan is one of our Allies now.
-our trading partner (Economically, Technological(Cars and electronics) and Cultural (Anime, Japanese Food))
-Most Well-known/built infrastructure in the Philippines was made by Japanese ingenuity. (Trains, Highway, Bridges, and soon Subway).
-They are known for the one of the best Earthquake resistant infrastructures.
-Lots of Japanese enroll in the Philippines and lots of Philippine works in Japan.
-Japan is the closest and the highest giving of aid when disaster struck in the Philippines like Earthquake and Eruptions
-Japan is one of the strategic Allies of the Philippines when it comes to the military and territory. Helps us Defend against scums.
-Filipino is the Thrid largest population in Japan according to the wiki
We see no reason to hate or to continue hating on present Japan.

@Chenle gave the egg to Felix i do think that the colonizers did damage and destroy the culture and history of pre colonial Philippines. Heck our country's name is still a reflection of their rule. I get jealous when i see the rich culture and history of other countries especially SEA countries with their temples and ancient cities. If our culture, history, cities and indigenous people were not destroyed and enslaved how rich our history could it be? How different our national identity could be? How far of a progress could we gave reached? We will never know since "winners" or the stronger countries write history and pass on their legacy (even the corrupt structure of their govt). Those who are rich and privileged will always step on the people who are less fortunate. As a 3rd world country, personally i think, we can only accept the circumstances and adapt. Forgive and receive help from the people who hurt you. Accept and welcome them even if they look down on you. Because that's the only way someone "weaker" will survive. This shouldn't be a problem in a perfect world but obviously the world isn't. Filipinos may not be winners but we are survivors.

We, Filipinos, are informed about our history from childhood to adulthood. Koreans grew up like us too. But what is the difference? The difference is that we are thought only about the facts, but never about the grudge that's accompanied by that. For us, those stories are trivias. We leave the negativity in the past, but we make sure to bring the lessons with us in the present and in the future.
Our educators play a big role in this as well. We never see them hold grudge while telling us what happened. They made us grow up positively despite knowing about the negative things that happened and negative things that are happening in our country. Since this happened between our ancestors, we no longer have the accountability for this. This goes with the Japanese people of today, and the other races that colonized us. Thinking that way made us flexible when it comes to socializing and working with foreigners. I think it's one of the good things that we learned from being a Filipino.

But yeah, we forgive but we do not forget. Living in the past is so tiring right? No one will grow and it will continue to the next generations if we put hatred in our heart.

I need to get back at that comment where he named an author of a study or a book about it. There are not really substantial proofs about the rumors of Koreans being more vicious because their population in the army was few. But they could not discredit the rumors because of the witnesses during the time.
Tbh, I just heard about it from my mom who heard it from her family and neighbors but I did not really mind about it. That's why I'm pretty surprised to see comments here from various people in different Ph places with similar stories.

In Korea, we learn what Japan did to Korea in school, which naturally brings our hatred toward Japan(obviously not everyone and some Koreans love Japan). As a Korean, I am surprised how open-minded Philippines are toward Japan, although knowing they were colonized in the past. And seeing these younger generations forgiving it(not sure about the old generations of Philippines) makes me really wanting to reflect on the Philippines open-minded attitude.
Thank you for this video. It really did taught me a lot of things to be more open-minded and look the world in a different perspective.
    I love you Philippines

As a Filipino, yes we were colonized by Japan but our elders (those who are still alive) mainly remembers the Spanish time when talking about colonization here. We were only colonized for 3years by Japan and 333 years by Spain. By the time we were colonized by Japan, we got help from US with General Douglas MacArthur (honored by the Philippines) thus having Japan surrendered to us with the Guerilla campaign like a resistance group. You say open minded young generations? Yeah a little bit but mainly we are open minded because our ancestors taught us to be kind and forgiving. It is not only us the young generation, but also our forefathers. Just want to share this to you, there was a man named Elpidio Quirino in the Philippines and during Japan and US war here, his wife and 3 of his children were ones of those hundred thousands who were killed. He was pretty mad but then 8 years later he became a president in the Republic of the Philippines. And you know what he did? He pardoned all the Japanese war criminals and sent them home to Japan despite his own family killed during the war. Then he said, “I have granted pardons so that hatred against the Japanese will not remain among my descendants and the Filipino people.” And that's when I think Filipinos started to forgive others, not just our minds that were opened but our hearts also. That is why we could be able to love foreigners equally despite those colonizations. Our attitudes helped us get through the darkness we experienced. Be polite, kind, loving, and forgiving. His words came true. The hatred against Japanese or any other nations were not normalized. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow, Philippines will always be that hospitable and forgiving country you'll ever see. And because of that, Japan honoured him by building a memorial of Elpidio Quirino in Tokyo. He was hurt, he had seen Japan as an enemy, but as a Filipino and an individual, he showed that true winning is forgiving and he does not want the Filipinos to live a life resenting others.
Maybe I was able to explain our side? Was that clear? Hahahahaha

We unite when someone insult our race, people and country. It's like "if u insult one of us, you already insulted all if us" or "insult one of us and the whole squad will become your enemy.
My point here is Pinoys are always a good friend but also the worst enemy. Let's leave behind the past and move on embrace the future. Let's put a stop to all of these arguments because it's a waste of time and energy.
    Spread love and not hate.

When you mess with the Philippines be ready😂
Like the war between North korea(with china) and S. Korea before when S. Korea is losing I think Americans and Filipinos helped S. Americans loses all the army they putted while the last one is S. Korea and Philippines
      S. Korea has a memorable place where they putted something about the Philippines helping them...
      Pinoys are very friendly too😁

Being a Filipino, I may had been angry learning that in history but the grudge somewhat dissipates not because I forget but because I find living with grudge in my heart very heavy. Maybe our elders are the same way because they raised us not to bear grudges on Past issues. I don't speak on behalf of the victims but Its something only God can punish. The sins of the father should not be blamed on the child. I just hope the children of Today's Japan will resent what the wartime Japan did to other people's lives.
