I love that an army I collected somewhere between 15 & 16 years is coming back to the forefront and touching up my old paint jobs with this tutorial is a welcome excuse to dust them off.
Bless you sir, I thought I had nailed down the painting method for my ulthwe, but you showed me I was wrong. I am about to happily toss you some money on Patreon, this is just... everything I could've hoped for.
Would love to see you paint some papsikels 3d prints from the skull hunter series. Your tutorials have been great to prepare me for my first time painting minis. Keep up the great content!!
That's cool! I was kinda thinking for a tacticool scheme for my Sisters of Silence to contrast strongly against my golden boys (they always struck me more like sinister ladies who creep up like a shadow then golden ladies) so I might take some of the notes here for that! Thanks!
Amazing painting as always, the academy videos are a delight to watch, and certainly learning a lot being fairly new to the hobby myself! Fell in love with the Aeldari instantly when I got into 40k. Started building my Biel-Tan crusade army recently, but I am finding it really difficult to recess shade the models. Perhaps a lovely guide on the Biel-Tan colour scheme in the near future, please?
I'm sure Duncan's got a much better means of doing it, but for my Biel-tan I use Apothecary White for that purpose and then go back over the panels with a pure white leaving those recesses an off-white and sometimes grey tone.
new to the hobby, working on my first box of Guardian Defends. Not doing Ulthwé, but another fairly dark colour scheme so there is a lot of stuff I realize now how I can do better.
A video for any of the Imperial assassins (Vindicare, Eversor, etc.) would be appreciated, making their black suits pop with those almost neon highlights is quite the challenge. Really want to do mine justice as they are my favourite designs.
You do make building an Aeldari army tempting. Kind of surprised because I find myself being more drawn to the armor after the black wash and before painting the flat panels. Wondering how it would look to leave the wash covering the full armor and using the Corvus black as the first edge highlight with the Mechanicus grey being used a bit less to edge highlight then light grey for very exposed hard edges. Also wonder how these guys would look with a panel or two having combat scratches. Okay... you may have more than tempted me.
Being curious, for the helmet part. Why shade and reapply morghast bone? Why not just shade only in the recess area instead? I'd like to expand the knowledge of the the process. And I saw this in the space marine painting guide. For shading, there's 3 terms being used. Wash, shade and layer. Wash I'd assumed is like what Duncan did for the body armour, a big blob of shade. Layer, I'd guess its diluted with medium or water? What of "shade"? Still pretty green in painting minis🎨.
Would it be worth it to stiple in a gradient of a lighter black/grey color to add depth? If so, which color would you recommend, and in which spots? Thank you.
I am entering a painting competition at my local store and we were all given the same stormcast vindictor to paint and I was wondering if anybody had any conversion or pose change ideas to help the model stand out? Thanks
Hi Duncan, what was the process for making the desert looking bases at the end there? I'm working on a Dune inspired Ulthwe army, but im struggling with basing as im still very new to the hobby
Welcome to this fine hobby😊 To answer your question regarding the base, we actually have a full tutorial on doing that very base (among others) in our 'Basing' Section in the Academy (duncanrhodes.com).
But 'the Academy' is behind a paywall. Not very helpful.:( I have the same question. We have been using a few different sizes of sand glued on with PVA glue.
I'm a big fan of the bone colour in this Ulthwé scheme, but it's turning out to be quite a pain to get Morghast Bone to cover smoothly (doesn't help that I primed in black either). I find I have to apply closer to 6 layers instead of 2 to get a smooth finish. Any advice to make it less of a headache to get Morghast Bone to cover smoothly?
Hey Duncan, great job here ! I wanted to ask something: are there painting guides of more custodian figurines on your patreon, or can I just use the painting techniques you used to paint the warden several months ago for my entire custodes army? Maybe the one you painted 5 years ago (with 400 000 views, on the warhammer channel) would be just as fine too? Thank you very much !
He has one for the custodian warden on the academy. It's pretty in-depth. Edit - it's actually the one that's free on this YT channel (though I'd still recommend the academy to be fair)
Soon. We want them to be available for people to follow along with. As soon as the Kickstarters start shipping (real soon) then we we'll start for sure 😊
We Ulthwé players have been waiting for this a long time! Thanks for the tutorial!
Hope you enjoyed it!

One thing I like about this channel is the no frills approach. Always solid and straightforward. 👍
I'm not painting ulthwe but I'm gonna use these tips on my aringhe units! You really make the best tutorials out there!
Awesome! Thank you!

You are very welcome
Watching this while building my T’au empire commander from my birthday which was yesterday.
For the greater good!
Loved the video. Just getting into Warhammer 40k and starting to purchase my Eldar army. Love the techniques you used.
preparing to build and paint some yme-loc eldar. watching this for inspiration on technique.
yo hell yeah more ulthwe vids, havent seen any of those this week
Always the best tutorials !!
Обожаю ультве, спасибо за ещё одну не плохую схему покраса :)
SUCH good results from relatively simple instructions. Unfortunately, none of the 'new guys' at GW have been up to scratch since.
Just in time for me to be planning my Ulthwé army.
I really like this Aedari Guardian in the colour scheme of Craftworld Ulthwè, the grey is a good undercoat for painting models.
Yes! Perfect timing! I was just assembling my Ulthwé killteam 😎
Trying to force myself to edge highlight instead of drybrushing like I usually do. Tipping the mini is such a great tip!
Glad it was helpful!
The best method I've seen to paint Ulthwé. Well done Duncan! Thanks for sharing it, I'll definitely stick to it this way! :+1:

Eldar are the best.
Great result!
Excellent video, please do iyanden next 🙂
Alrady done! We did this one awhile back in is currently on the Academy website (duncanrhodes.com)
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA oh? Missed that, Thank you
Amazing tutorial!👍🏽🙌🏽
This is the Ulthwe.
Never thought nun oil would stand out on corvus black....huh... gonna have to go touch up my Raven Guard force now! 😅
Biel tan tutorial next? Done black, might as well do white next
watched this at 2am and the little laugh from the autofocus thing freaked me the fk out
Nice tutorial!
Any chance of a grey knights tutorial 🤞

I’ve seen your videos on the warhammer channel and the videos I saw was archaon, I was just wondering if you’re going to do him again in this channel?
Hey Duncan! How has your day been, I hope it has been well so far. Also if possible say hi to everyone on the team for me please.
Hi Selzor. We've had a great day thanks and Rog says hello 😊
Not sure if this has already been suggested, but can you possibly do a Sons of Malice paint tutorial? I wanna learn from the best.
Concerning your new line of paints; I live in the US, and was wondering when and where (US distributors) will your paints
be available. Thanks
What colours would you replace like for like if you would prefer purple pumes and gems?
Great tutorial as always. Could you maybe do a tutorial for Fafnir Rann?
Awesome video, please may you do Biel-tan next
Already done! We did the new Autarch in the colour scheme of that very Craftworld. It's live in the Academy (duncanrhodes.com) now😊
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA thanks!
I was thinking about bying an army on ebay but most of them are already painted. is there a way for me to coat or paint over an already painted model?
Ulthwe, yeeeee boi!
What is the best way to purchase all these paints rather than adding them individually on the warhammer shop?
I am entering a painting competition at my local store and we were all given the same stormcast vindictor to paint and I was wondering if anybody had any conversion or pose change ideas to help the model stand out? Thanks
paint it not metallic.
Nice!
Thank you! Cheers!

@@crumbum2 there are many dessert base tutorials on you tube if you cannot afford academy membership.
These look similar to my Storm Guardians, never heard of 'Aeldari Guardians'.
Wish fullfilled Duncan the hero of assistance has arrived to cover the superior craftworld Ulthwe mwahahahahaha
Is there a reason you don't use a Matte (or satin/gloss) varnish?

Question. I undercoated my Ulthwe in Chaos Black, will following this guide yield similar results?
Yes, just paint the black armour with Corvus Black then wash with Nuln Oil 😊

@duncan - i used mechanicus grey spray and it's left this nasty matt finish.... is that common?
No, sometimes that happens either if it wasn't shaken enough or maybe atmospheric conditions such as heat or humidity.
You are legandary with the brush
And you are legendary with the comments 😁
Thank you , DRPA .
🐺
Will u paint the new avatar of khaine?
Of course 😁
Why don't you use your own Paint range?
When are you going to start doing tutorials using your own paint line? Just curious.
Soon. We want them to be available for people to follow along with. As soon as the Kickstarters start shipping (real soon) then we we'll start for sure 😊
Hello, do you use a mat varnish to protect your minis? I do but have found the Army Painter one has a 'sheen' when dry.
We use AK Interactive's Ultra Matt Varnish mixed with some Lahmian Medium to get a slightly satin finish.
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Thank you - quick response too !
Not a fan of the Aeldari but the content is excellent as usual. The black armour looks superb.
Hello Duncan. I notice your water cup is often brand new water. How often do you change your water cup? How often do you recommend?
Making your way through every craftworld? Lol
8:17 - "magazine clip", eh? I heard that while in my automobile car.
