The animation is certainly leagues better in the episode of east blue version, but overall, i still prefer the original. I love how they managed to make such an intense scene, despite the limited animation, with things such as expressive art, fitting music and good pacing
Just watched it with my mom, and you were right on everything but the pacing. Idk why everything thinks this, but old one piece pacing is not, not good lol. So many sliding still shots of fodder pirates reacting, and things like that
This video and your comment made me understand a little better why I still enjoyed the older style of One Piece anime as much as the modern one. The animation has definitely become more fluid and colors more vibrant in the modern style but it's less expressive in the art, less use of dynamic camera work for impact and of course very clunky pacing with some exceptions like episodes 1015/1017.
@@islandboy9381 yeah despite dressrosa sucking ass the pacing for the climax of the fights were amazing I know it isnt early one piece but one piece makes fights sick
I think the actual movement and animation in the 2017 version is “better”, but I think the character art and designs in the 2000 original are way better. Overall the episodes of the original 2000 have far more interesting direction, like cutting to the butterfly during Arlong’s speech to Nami and having the action and music pause for Luffy and Arlong to talk about Nami’s capture by Arlong. The remaster has better fighting animation but character art and overall flow and direction I think is lacking in the 2017 version
It has bits of interesting direction, and then 95% of each episode was just still shots of people reacting to luffy do literally anything, so I think overall the anime has just straight up improved
@@juanurena87 yeah the old era one piece (like pre grand line) has some absolutely god awful art I’m sorry. They’d have luffy looking like an alien in so many moments, it was just weird
@@adamh4h4 yeah I’d much rather have weekly episodes to look forward to lmao, maybe when the manga is finished they can remaster the whole show from the start. It’d easily be the best show of all time then
I really prefer the original because the animation is more realistic looking and toned down to match the early one piece feel, but in the remake the animation makes the characters feel stronger and I think that really only works for late one piece where everyone is really strong
Yeah there are also outside elements involved. Since the studio is throwing money at getting these classic scenes reanimated, there is a push to show the money on the screen, even if a more understated tone might have been better. Like in the original it looks like Luffy gave it all he had and that was enough to just barely bring down the building. In this one you're left wondering how there is still any rubble left; it almost looks like the building should have been vaporized on impact. Hell this kick looks like it could have hurt Kaido with no haki.
The thing is, Luffy has always been extremely strong. He doesn't train or get any power boosts for the entire first half of the series. The strength he's punching people in Marineford is the same strength he was hitting Alvida with at the beginning of the series, so I think it's pretty fitting
I really love early One Piece art style, not only because it takes me back to my childhood, but I think I like the simplicity and the general ambience with colors.
It takes me back to the Peter Pan no Bouken animation days. very few still make animation like that in the story book style but still have great stories.
Got to read a lil bit of the manga and I have to say I never realised how dynamic Oda's poses are. Also, didn't expect to have emotions to a finale of an arc I've never read haha. That was a really good chapter, have to read the series proper someday😤
It's not a bad time to get started. We just reached the final saga in the manga, and there's plenty of character and world building to enjoy. The Anime scene is also... chaotic. The bad pacing is one thing, but within the bad pacing are some well done scenes that are worth looking into. Recently there was an episode we dub "Roof Piece" that a lot of people, myself included found amazing. Megumi Ishitani brought such a great breath of air into that episode. In contrast, there were episodes I remember in the Dressrosa arc that covered only a SECTION of a chapter and used everything in their arsenal to drag out the episodes.
Hell yeah hope you get into it! I would read the manga and watch the really impactful scenes/fights in the anime but if you do the anime only avoid the filler and it does get bad with the Toei pacing but its still fun to watch especially on the first watch. It's not 1000+ chapers/episodes for a reason. Starts off a bit goofy but its one of the most emotional Shonen out there with insane world building and character building/depth.
I prefer the older version for the most part. I like that the newer one focuses on the bite a bit better, but overall I like the feel the original gives off more.
One thing i always liked about the older animation as you stated was the way the characters looked in some frames more realistic whereas now they have more round shapes and it makes it look a bit more goofy but still love the show regardless
Sometimes I miss the older animation and in the manga how Oda and the animators would make the world look absolutely alive, real, detailed, realistic, etc. Like the ships at marineford are just so exquisitely drawn in the manga. And in alabasta the desert and food looked so real. No offense to Shida, or those who DO love this animation, but I for one wish we didn't have to lose all those good qualities.
the original one piece anime art style (before it went widescreen) is the best one imo, while the animation now has been leagues better, the art and character designs of the original will always be superior to me.
Agreed. I think Norboru Koizumi artstyle and Katsumi Ishizuka are the best styles for one piece. I know after time skip they tried to be more accurate to Oda's style but i honestly perfer the others 😭
@@drekagaming i agree with all of this. the original art style is just so great looking, it totally gives off this classic 2000s cartoon feel that i love and also perfectly fits with the series, i get that most prefer accuracy to odas art, but something about those old episodes has a completely different vibe
for me 2000s was the golden age of Anime, everything from that age looks so natural. Nowadays Anime looks "better", but they never hit me as hard as the old ones.
5:43 Thanks for finally identifying this legend for me. I have seen his work for longest and I immediately know its the same guy too everytime one of his scenes play. He still works on the newest one piece episodes as well.
I really like how the building collapses in the original with the smokes of destruction going out the windows first from all sides of the building and then collapses rather than all at once.
Both versions ARE great to me don't get me wrong but, there's a level of "impact" that I get with the high editing combined with the mostly limited animation that I don't get AS much of in the new one. That tends to go for DB as well for me. I do like that added level of clarity on that chomp tho. If luffy wasn't rubber I'd ask why he wasn't at least bleeding profusely from the hole in his body lol
This was another really well crafted video dude. I really appreciate how you went into detail about the spacing and timing as those are some of my favourite aspects of great animation in general.
@@forgottenrelics1197 You're doing the Lord's work. It's hard enough to find animation breakdowns of Western cartoons The fact that you do Eastern properties is something special.
I wanna believe that a part of why Shida goes uncorrected so often is because of the _sheer number_ of drawings that he provides. The amount of drawings that he does per cut is insane enough. To add corrections on top of that, i imagine, would be like a death sentence.
Thanks for the great analysis! I've seen both scenes before and I enjoyed the original more, but I couldn't quite explain to myself why. Now I believe the slower pace and buildup for the kick made the result more satisfying especially with the destruction of the building compared to the more recent adaption. Although, Shida's work on One Piece each time really are the highlights of the show as well. BTW, editing was been absolutely fire and hilarious man.
As someone who loves animating, and animation in general, I really liked this video! You detailed a lot of things that I knew of in animation, but didn't know the specifics. Like how Shida has alofofmovementreallyfast and then it sloowss doownn forr immppaacctt and thenitgoesreallyfastagain, the "spacing and timing" as you said. His "key frames" are a high point of notice for his work. Really cool review of both moments.
One of the many things I like about one piece is that the slow change of the drawing style between the start of the series vs the more recent one is that gives the feeling of character developing. The characters grow and change, and so does the art style. I feel that the remake takes that away. Both are awesome of course.
7:30 "I will not let you destroy my WORLD" These movements again, which I think I even saw, with Shida's cut on Digimon, you can definitely tell it's him lol
I feel like Oda's (and to an extent the anime's) older artstyle had much more character. I specifically liked the more varied, but not too unrealistic proportions (like Chopper) and the stylistic uses of line art to simulate shadows. It was also a time where Oda still knew how to draw women. Gotta say, his style shift since the Water 7 saga feels much less badass in some respects.
@Señor Quack He's already spoken on it many times. If you don't like it then that's YOUR issue. Or maybe admit you're a far left nzi who has a stupid gender enforced ideal that "women can be any size they want and it's fine". If so then Oda is fine. He does NOT have to represent the Western women who willingly make themselves fat and ugly.
And to think Shida, Hisada, and Shimanuki are still active even in today's One Piece anime is crazy. Also hoping for more One Piece content you're one of the very few TH-camrs out there who analyze this type of content and you're 🔥 at it bro keep it up!
I think what I miss most about the original Luffy is the specific detail to his face and body. The way his hair remained short but didn’t seem, for lack of better words, blocky or “thick”, same with Sanji’s hair. I always thought his face looked so much more human. His eyes were goofy and round but not too much. They didn’t just look empty half the time. his eyebrows were long, nose was pointed, and you can see the intensity not just in his eyes, but his entire face. I liked the way his face was structured-the round just isn’t my cup of tea. And then his body, there were more consistencies like with his height and build and I loved that he didn’t look SO short and thin in the arms or legs half of the time. He had the body of an average teenage boy. I don’t think I really started caring for Luffy’s design again until Wano. There are so many more details I could point out/elaborate on and this is no shame at all to anyone, hell ik I could NOT do a better job. it’s just my personal preference on Luffy’s design as a fan. I still enjoy the series all the same 👍🏽
I think I prefer Shida’s version of this scene. However when it comes to jet Gatling scene Luffy vs Lucci I without a doubt prefer the original. The way the speed and impact of those punches where animated is still insane, I don’t think the remake has the same impact.
Both are awesome, but while Shida's take on the fight looks epic with his signature style, Shimanuki deserves some recognition for how he used limited animation to make the scene so impactful.
I felt that because of the time restraints of the original, it made the pacing and impact of the battle so much more satisfying. Whereas the new version, it feels like there's too much going on. So many new details that honestly could be cut out. The camera movement when Luffy starts his GumGum-Battle Axe doesn't feel natural as it goes from one direction then jerks to another. From a film-making standpoint, it just distracts from the flow I think most people would anticipate. There's so much that goes into the newer animation but I honestly feel that sometimes less can be so much more.
I quite like Shida's take on the scene, but I prefer the snappy finale of the original. The timing of the later edition dragged on a little and seemed winded in comparison.
@@forgottenrelics1197 I hope you start watching/reading OP. Right now, from a production standpoint, the OP anime surpasses many seasonal shows. The stuff Toei does is revolutionary for weekly anime. They really went above and beyond for the Wano arc. Episode 1015 is one of the best episodes in ANIME direction and animation-wise. People say the anime is poorly animated, but that's just false. Yes, there are poorly animated episodes, which is normal for any weekly show, but the OP anime had solid production till the Wano arc. From then on, the anime has just kept getting better and better. It's unreal! Btw, Hisada is not the beast he once was on DBZ, but he is still going strong to this day. His animations are still dynamic. Sato was a character designer for Ep of east blue. He also made a few appearances on the show. He animated one of the best scenes from Dressrosa arc. Shimanuki is stiff as always, but he's a great addition to the staff. His early OP work was great, but nowadays not so much. Naoki the GOAT Tate was really active on OP during the Summit War Saga, but now he's busy with Digimon... He was one of the animators who carried the anime for quite a while. Without him, the anime wouldn't have been the same. He animated one of the best scenes in OP to this day. I don't have to say anything about Shida, he's a legend. He's delivering HQ animation to this day. Recently he worked on ep 1025 but he's gonna make an appearance on 1028 as well!!! He also contributed a lot to the upcoming OP movie 'Film Red'. His work ethic is admirable! Ryo Onishi blessed us with amazing, fluid, action, and character acting animations in Thriller Bark and Sabaody arcs. Definitely in my top 5 animators in the industry.
@@memeduka Honestly just the quality from the Wano arc alone has made me want to watch the anime haha. Hats off to the staff for taking a weekly anime to such heights, I can only hope Dragon Ball can one day get the same level of consistent quality! And it's refreshing to see appreciation for multiple animators. A lot of people have pretty narrow tastes haha. But yeah definitely agree with everything you've said, I've noticed just from Hisada's OP clips on sakugabooru, while fine, isn't as strong as his early days on OP and Dragon Ball Z. Likewise I've realised that's the same with ol Shimanuki. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels the same way. Will be interesting tho to see where Tate goes after Digimon Ghost Game concludes. Also glad to hear Shida's gonna make a return, definitely look forward to that :)
@@forgottenrelics1197 Yes, a lot of people love on-model consistent animation like Demon Slayer, but I prefer idiosyncratic animators who add their personal touch like Tate, Shida, Norio Matsumoto, Yuki Hayashi, BAHI JD, Umakoshi, Hironori Tanaka, Shingo Yamashita, Takashi Kojima, Masami Mori, Shinya Ohira, Kameda, Yutaka Nakamura, Ishizuka, Akihiro Ota, Onishi, Ryo Imamura, Keiichiro Watanabe, Toshiyuki Sato, Yuuya Geshi, etc. The age is definitely catching up to them (Hisada and Shimanuki, they gotta be in their 60s, right?). Since Wano started, Toei has been bringing in a lot of overseas animators to work on the anime. In the last two/three years the number of overseas freelance animators has been rapidly increasing in the industry. It's nice to see what other animators, besides in-house staff, can do in this industry.
@@memeduka Same, it's exactly what makes Japanese animation interesting! Pity people use whether something is on model or not as a way to measure good animation. I've likewise noticed a lot of the freelance talent that's have been brought onto Toei projects in the last couple of years. Would be a dream to have someone like Bahi work on DB.
Thanks, been trying to improve the editing, as well as refine the scripts and try and come from the perspective of someone who is mostly unfamiliar with the animation production side of things! I definitely kept it in mind before, but yeah just much more intentional with that aspect now :)
@@forgottenrelics1197 hell yea man great to see ur hard works paying off! this more general audience approach will help show more people how fucking awesome animation and it's production can be so i am certainly not disappointed with this direction :DDD
Man that stamp onto Arlong is so satisfying in the beginning. You could tell that the rotation from Arlong is what brings his foot down with so much force. I feel it in my soul every time I watch it. It's so well animated, good analysis
I like the new version visually, and use Episode of East Blue whenever I try to get a friend to sit down and watch One Piece, but the few who have stuck with it and continued watching OP with me have all agreed that the original just FEELS better, despite looking distinctly 90s-00s. One thing everyone I've ever talked with agrees on, is the Walk to Arlong Park. It just looks so much better in the OG style.
Nothing beats Old school animation. The magic is coming from the Old era. I miss how they all look before.. old chopper design was not trying hard to be cute. Hes already cute as he was.. tan zorro is also better. The new one has very odd thin nose. I love the expression of the old luffy.. expressionless but very intense like on the nami stabbing her own scene.
Shida's work always feels wobbly and kills any impact of the action for me, it makes every character feel like those tube men you'd see in gas stations, flopping and moving their arms all around. The shading is weird as well If i had to synthesize it I'd call Shida's work over animated, it's very fluid for sure but that also makes it very soft and lacks the simple, direct animation that something like a punch should have
Exactly. The original felt like it had way more power to their punches while in the remake, it doesn't feel much impactful. And yes the shading is very unnecessarily heavy. The shading feels so heavy it overpowers the colors and feels like everything just blends in. Also straying from the source material just to make Luffy more badass is not something I prefer, especially when it doesn't suit his character
Please do more animation analysis of One Piece, this was so good! I love that you highlight individual directors and the tendencies in their work, it's super-interesting and makes me think more about the details in the art itself!
This video made me realise how the animation in 2017 really shows Luffy more in a Dragon Ball style, while the 2000 version is a lot closer to Oda's style.
In terms of art style, the original really made luffy and the younger strawhats feel like they're kids out on an exciting adventure. The remake really makes you feel the timeskip happened, and now they're grown adults.
Not even gonna read any comments because I know its gonna be full of "dur hur old better new sucks" so I'm just gonna say I love both versions. One Piece is the best! 💖💖🤩🤩
I haven't watched one piece but my friends have watched this anime. And I was thinking about suggesting you to make a breakdown of One Piece Animation. I am glad you made it. I personally go with Shimanuki and Hisada I love the way they have drawn those closeup of luffy's face. And those hit feel so impactful. For me Shida is okay I love his complex camera work but I feel his part feels abit more exaggerated. Especially those fast lip flaps.
I like the original version better and although this animation seems outdated, it is thanks to it that you seem to be immersed in this age of pirates, this style of characters, environments, you are like in an old era and it gave the feeling that this is an anime about pirates
Even though I love Shida's work there are times when his overly fluid animation doesn't really fit. For example making punches or kicks be too fluid removes form the strength or impact of these attacks and it looks more like trying to slap something with weak noodles while being underwater. I do prefer the old classic style for these early arcs.
Someone sent a comparison of these particular two scenes so it's why I analysed just these ones. As I mentioned in the video tho I haven't watched One Piece so I didn't know there was another version. Although honestly I probably would've gone with the 2017 one anyway since Shida had a part in it :)
@@forgottenrelics1197 it would've been sick to see you cover Episode of Nami, I think it's the best version. It's not as limited in animation as the original and it isn't as overly done as East Blue, it also leans a lot more in on the drama and mood, with moody color and dramatic character acting, which with the context of the overall arc makes it my favorite version.
I’m going to be honest despite the quality, the people who did original one piece fights did an AMAZING job on drawing anger and emotion that I love and you’re right I like the old heads
Absolutely criminal you don't have more subs, some of the best animation related content I've ever seen and consistent too, well researched, you know what you're talking about etc. subbed and turned the bell on.
Interesting how both were under time constraints, the original having to take shortcuts to make the weekly deadline, and the remaster having to cut some scenes for the sake of the limited run time. personally I like the original better, It has so much character. While the remaster was beter animated and flashier, it felt like it lost some of the soul the original had.
The anime peaked in its character design with Water 7 thru Sabaody imo, but of course the animation is defo at its peak in Wano. I'm happy that's still going on even in the manga up to now
As you said, both have their appeals. One thing I will admit is that the more recent version can be a bit... distracting with some of its movements and honestly felt some of it could be dialed back. The drawings are great, and believe me it's nice to see a faster paced One Piece... but sometimes it just felt a bit too fast.
The head movement and camera just going bananas gets distracting really easily. It's hard to even track what is doing what when it's like still frame -> incomprehensible movement -> still frame -> incomprehensible movement ->repeat
I think the movements being distracting has its charm too. We can understand what they're doing by the slow pacing, highlighting the climax of this arc than being rushed and left confused in the final product. I never knew Arlong bit Luffy but that just means that the remake did a lot better emphasizing Arlong's teeth drill attack.
I couldn't take the remade version seriously with all the headshaking, the weird mouth opening and closing quickly on luffy's shout and the frankly needless amount of detail and moving things over actually selling the specific emotions of the characters and the impact
Glad to see that it's the 4:3 version which was used here instead of the bad upscale. The extracts here are in a very good quality by the way, it is surprising considering that the restorations have been abandoned on this format.
Funny how this scene was done 3 times, once in the anime by Masahiro shimanuki/Kazuya hisada then again in episode of nami by Kenji kuroyanagi and then finally in episode of east blue by Naotoshi shida
I always wondered why I liked the older designs and early episodes of one piece more then the new and it’s because of the angular jaws and it interesting that it’s a lot of it from dbz which is my favorite of all time
older one is somewhat better at build to the emotion and the newer better on the character detail. If they combined both older pacing , development and impact with the new angle movement and character detail it would be perfect. I would like to see arlong getting his nose broke , wave head around , stop and look at luffy and fix the nose while talking , and the angles of the attack making a big focus on arlong then on how luffy reacts when he sees him coming and a fast pace like the old that it happens so fast so he envolves on repeting the same frame when the kick hits , and proceed to the same detail of castle destruction which was something emotional for nami really would make an awsome animaton.
I prefer the original one best. Something that I like about the anime is that as the animation evolves, it gives off the feeling that the characters are growing. The character appears much stronger (I think) in the updated version, while in the original they still look young and the emotion is much more apparent than the strength. I think at least.
naotoshi shida is toeis best animator you can say what you want. he was always the one who animated the great moments in op and dragonball. hes still doing that today, hes just the goat
I personally love how the art progresses. The early arcs are grungy and unrefined in a good way as our gang are new to the pirate business while the new animation services the world very well as it makes it feel more grand and vast as it truly is and it being more polished makes it feel the crew has matured overall both scenes look great and interesting to see how different animators handle the same scene so I don’t prefer one or the other and a great analysis ❤
I think I prefer the surprise when either you turn the page or the scene cuts to Arlong at the very bottom. It's that feeling of you know it was bad, but you didn't know how bad. I feel like Oda does this a lot in the manga in some of the fights and while I appreciate the animation it just feels like it's missing that surprise.
Thank you, I’m actually getting tired of the nostalgia bait lol. I’ve been rewatching the one piece anime after catching up, and I can say that no part of it is even close to the level of quality we get in modern one piece. And not even wano, just like, anything after water 7
Having watched One Piece in its entirety less than a year ago for the first time, I have to say I much prefer the art style of the original. The animation quality is better in the newer one, no doubt, but the original had a bit more character. The new animation feels a bit homogenized with the styles of modern anime as a whole, which given how bizarre OP is, doesn't really vibe the same.
I personally prefer the original because even though the 2017 version feels more polished and bold, the original has that typical one piece almost nostalgic feel to it which I really like.
The updated animation has my vote, I don't care for the Nostalgia factor, I prefer that the art remains loyal to what Oda has presented for the past 2 and half decades, the character art and designs are very different from what is shown in the Manga, its what turned me off to One Piece when it first aired. Everyone likes to act like a pretentious critic, but if you actually go back and watch the original, you'd critique allot of the things you see in it.
Same. I prefer the newer one for the better animation and for how dynamic it is in comparison. The only things I prefer in the original are Luffy's dramatic stare at Arlong and the outside shot of the castle falling down
The 2017 is clearly a looot more well animated, no question, but i feel there is a thing as 'over-animation', and i feel Shida went a little too far and the scene lost some stability.
i feel the episode of east blue had a far higher animation quality and budget, but was over-animated because of it. In the part where luffy gets bit his face just moves so much that it feels unnatural and awkward to watch. the moving of the mouths are excessive in the remake, and while there are parts that are better, i overall think it feels less like how it should. i prefer the original.
I prefer the og, but from the entire series, post-Enis Lobby to Archipielago. That animation, simple, but sharp and with a lot of emotion. I miss that animation so much
absolutely true.........although the picture quality and all that rotation of screen etc is way better now....but still the art style of characters particularly, was much better before, how they had more sharper jawlines, sharper eyes......compared to how now its much more rounder.....but its no doubt that the mangakas art style himself has changed alot along the years as well
The animation is certainly leagues better in the episode of east blue version, but overall, i still prefer the original. I love how they managed to make such an intense scene, despite the limited animation, with things such as expressive art, fitting music and good pacing

Agreed. I think Norboru Koizumi artstyle and Katsumi Ishizuka are the best styles for one piece. I know after time skip they tried to be more accurate to Oda's style but i honestly perfer the others 😭
I have a question. Isn’t it true that the HD special edition of the original episodes made the animation worse?
@@drekagaming i agree with all of this. the original art style is just so great looking, it totally gives off this classic 2000s cartoon feel that i love and also perfectly fits with the series, i get that most prefer accuracy to odas art, but something about those old episodes has a completely different vibe

I really like how the building collapses in the original with the smokes of destruction going out the windows first from all sides of the building and then collapses rather than all at once.
Yeah it's a really detailed cut :)
The analysis here is legit the kind of stuff that is so enlightening
2000’s art style was soooooo much better than the updated one
Both versions ARE great to me don't get me wrong but, there's a level of "impact" that I get with the high editing combined with the mostly limited animation that I don't get AS much of in the new one. That tends to go for DB as well for me. I do like that added level of clarity on that chomp tho. If luffy wasn't rubber I'd ask why he wasn't at least bleeding profusely from the hole in his body lol
This was another really well crafted video dude. I really appreciate how you went into detail about the spacing and timing as those are some of my favourite aspects of great animation in general.
np man and i'm glad ya enjoyed it!
Your welcome haha and yeah I've tried to change up the editing style a bit lately!
luffy old one: perfect
luffy post timeskip: circle head
7:30 "I will not let you destroy my WORLD"
These movements again, which I think I even saw, with Shida's cut on Digimon, you can definitely tell it's him lol
If so then Oda is fine. thanks for the support dude and yes it's great that these guys are still at it after all these years!
The way the speed and impact of those punches where animated is still insane, I don’t think the remake has the same impact.
haha glad to finally find someone who doesn't mind Shida's take
Same the original Lucci battle was great but in the Arlong scene I think the newer version conveys more emotion
Both are awesome, but while Shida's take on the fight looks epic with his signature style, Shimanuki deserves some recognition for how he used limited animation to make the scene so impactful.
The comments have achieved this ngl
I felt that because of the time restraints of the original, it made the pacing and impact of the battle so much more satisfying. Whereas the new version, it feels like there's too much going on. So many new details that honestly could be cut out. The camera movement when Luffy starts his GumGum-Battle Axe doesn't feel natural as it goes from one direction then jerks to another. From a film-making standpoint, it just distracts from the flow I think most people would anticipate. There's so much that goes into the newer animation but I honestly feel that sometimes less can be so much more.
Love your content man. You need more recognition for your work.

Pretty cool analysis! Sometimes after watching so much anime you can start to take the effort and details for granted. Really cool to see!
I quite like Shida's take on the scene, but I prefer the snappy finale of the original. The timing of the later edition dragged on a little and seemed winded in comparison.
I love so much the artstyle of the old one, the design of the characters were so much better in my opinion
The scene from Episode of East Blue is better in every aspect (art-style, compositing, lighting, animation, storyboard).
Yeah it was well done :)

Dang I would love to see more one piece animation deep dives like this, it's so fascinating
Old Luffy Face: "I WILL KILL YOU"
New Face : "Who took my f*ckng MEAT?!"
Shida's work always feels wobbly and kills any impact of the action for me, it makes every character feel like those tube men you'd see in gas stations, flopping and moving their arms all around. The shading is weird as well
If i had to synthesize it I'd call Shida's work over animated, it's very fluid for sure but that also makes it very soft and lacks the simple, direct animation that something like a punch should have
This, the punches and kicks have no weight
Yeah, i rlly loved the og look for luffy with his glare, honestly gave me chills
You Naied it bro, everytime I see your videos it inspires me to draw, and that goes for ANY anime and Manga review, keep it up 🔥🔥🔥🔥
You know funny thing is I was actually thinking about doing a very similar thing with these two scenes lol 😂
From a sick fight to an even sicker fight.
I MUCH preferred the older design.. it just looks too round now when the sharp features gave more character
I’m surprised you didn’t talk about the version from Episode of Nami, which felt like a sweet middle ground between these two.
2000's luffy rage just looked a whole lot more wrathful

@@felix_forrester bruh it ain't that hard to follow is it?
It's supposed to be fast though
I couldn't take the remade version seriously with all the headshaking, the weird mouth opening and closing quickly on luffy's shout and the frankly needless amount of detail and moving things over actually selling the specific emotions of the characters and the impact
i like crisp looking animations, to me its more satisfying, but in terms of getting the whole story the tv anime overtakes it.
Glad to see that it's the 4:3 version which was used here instead of the bad upscale. The extracts here are in a very good quality by the way, it is surprising considering that the restorations have been abandoned on this format.
Obviously to me, the classic versions of one piece is better than the newer version. My favorite anime is any classic anime from the 80s and 90s
Funny how this scene was done 3 times, once in the anime by Masahiro shimanuki/Kazuya hisada then again in episode of nami by Kenji kuroyanagi and then finally in episode of east blue by Naotoshi shida
I always wondered why I liked the older designs and early episodes of one piece more then the new and it’s because of the angular jaws and it interesting that it’s a lot of it from dbz which is my favorite of all time
Probably the same reason I like early Op's artstyle as well
Luffy design just became ugly af
i love the original like most fans for the simplicity and the "feel" that comes from it but the animation in the updated versions is extremely cool.
older one is somewhat better at build to the emotion and the newer better on the character detail.
Where in the world can we find these remakes? Crunchyroll only has the HD versions, but none of the reanimation. I'm losing my mind looking for it.

I like Luffy's face in the old version better, he looks... not gross...

I like the clarity and how smooth the remake animation is, but the original character design and certain fight scene elements still are top notch.
I love one piece and i love this video. Definitely subbed and about to watch a bunch of your vids
Without a nostalgia bias, shida is better in every possible way.
Thank you, I’m actually getting tired of the nostalgia bait lol. I’ve been rewatching the one piece anime after catching up, and I can say that no part of it is even close to the level of quality we get in modern one piece. And not even wano, just like, anything after water 7
@@rooodis456 nah the original is simply better
Having watched One Piece in its entirety less than a year ago for the first time, I have to say I much prefer the art style of the original. The animation quality is better in the newer one, no doubt, but the original had a bit more character. The new animation feels a bit homogenized with the styles of modern anime as a whole, which given how bizarre OP is, doesn't really vibe the same.

Didn't know they remade the old episodes, guess I'm lucky to have seen them all.
I personally prefer the original because even though the 2017 version feels more polished and bold, the original has that typical one piece almost nostalgic feel to it which I really like.

Having a bigger budget doesn't mean its better. IMHO
Fr, the orginal Luffy vs lucci (jet gattling scene) had minimal animation but hit hard

What does this have to do with the video lol
@@diegovaldes1408 la animación del 2017 se ve más cara, pero me parece mejor la original.
DRAMATIC FINISH!
Ayee glad to find another person that likes Shida's take haha. Kinda surprised how many people dislike the new one. But each to their own I guess.
Same. I prefer the newer one for the better animation and for how dynamic it is in comparison. The only things I prefer in the original are Luffy's dramatic stare at Arlong and the outside shot of the castle falling down
They make me cringe!
The 2017 is clearly a looot more well animated, no question, but i feel there is a thing as 'over-animation', and i feel Shida went a little too far and the scene lost some stability.
I love the Head swinging in the remake, but the Original is better to me, the impact just feels better and very different to the remake
kazuya hisada will forever be my personal favorite because you can feel the emotion on the faces when you see them.
i feel the episode of east blue had a far higher animation quality and budget, but was over-animated because of it. In the part where luffy gets bit his face just moves so much that it feels unnatural and awkward to watch. the moving of the mouths are excessive in the remake, and while there are parts that are better, i overall think it feels less like how it should. i prefer the original.
Budget has little to do with it, you can see this amount of animation in Naotoshi Shida's work both in TV series and movies.
That’s just shida’s style chief
Great video! Great time for it too.
