So Hisashi Kagawa's involvement in the special's designs technically already gave One Piece a Toei connection thanks to his Sailor Moon background (he only did character design work in the 2nd and 3rd movies but did key animation and / or animation direction in all 5 seasons of the original series). Neat. He has shared lots of custom artworks based on the series he worked on in social media and even released an artbook. He's definitely very skilled, probably SM's best anime artist too. Also, 98' surely had to be an odd and rough time for Toei when it comes to their blockbuster shows; as Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon have both just ended the year before while One Piece and Digimon were still a year away. Because of this I don't just wonder how things could've turned out if OP stayed at IG, but also if Toei's 98' Yu-Gi-Oh series did succeed and the series didn't migrate to NAS / Gallop shortly afterwards. A lot of things might've been different.
It also gave it that Studio Cockpit connection! Their involvement was pretty small in comparison to previous Toei titles like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z but you did have one of their best, Keisuke Masunaga come in for a couple of movies (who's oddly absent here?). The biggest title Toei would've had tho during 98 would've been their Dr. Slump reboot, but that had pretty weak ratings. Interestingly there was a lot of staff overlap between those two series, Koizumi is probably one of the biggest ones doing character designs for the 99 Slump movie.
It's minor, but it's nice that the male characters also have light reflecting off their eyes sometimes, which I don't think happens in the series. It gives them way more life imo

Given that the manga was still on the Syrup Village arc when this was animated, the fact that Ganzack says he's close to being Pirate King is downright hilarious. My guy, you'd get atomised the moment you set foot outside East Blue.
The way they did the story for this movie kinda reminds me of how the first three Dragon Ball movies are where it's like a retelling of an arc but with an original villain
I wish more anime adaptations would change up their art styles when adapting. Keep it recognizable but also make the art style look better in animation. Sometimes manga art style just doesn’t look good in animation. It makes sense why they don’t, but I think a lot of series could benefit from it. This definitely shouldn’t be most as a lot of manga art styles translate well to animation.
@@ProjektTaku still think the same. Any art style can be well animated. I just think that changing it up can make it better. It makes sense for a weekly series to be faithful in art style, so its no big deal
this is a great video. I always wondered if one piece took on another art style early on and never knew this existed. although I really love how one piece characters look overall, the OVA take I can see definitely being more appealing to a lot of people who are at first turned off by early one piece art style
I still believe the animation in one piece baron omatsuri was the best it has ever been animated. Wano's animation is great yeah, but the art direction for baron omatsuri translates one piece's... cartoonishness the best I've ever seen. it has good fighting animation when it needs to, but the art style lends perfectly to what one piece was always about, which is the lightheartedness (and despair, sometimes) of adventure.
Exceptional analysis. I never got into one piece because of the Animation and artistic choice post 2000, but I absolutely adore the 1998 style which I have never heard of before, with the fluid animation if they had kept it I would certainly have got into it. Thanks again for this excellent video.
I want to tell you that the 90s style did not disappear in the early 2000s, just see anime like Inuyasha, GTO, Mon Colle Knights the years 1999,2000,2001,2002 are a mix of old and new, in fact we say the 90s as the period 1990-1999 but in reality it is 1991-2000 the last decade of the 20th century but a lot of people make this mistake
Would be fun to also make videos like this for Black Clover and Land of the Lsutrous as well, given they also had mostly forgotten PVs with very different styles.
Oh yeah i saw this OVA during the one piece anniversary stream actually wity my best friend. He's a huge one piece fan so this was a cool piece of history
The animation is mazing! However Kazumi is way better at adapting Oda's charming artstyle to an anime. But I absolutely love the color, animation, and sound design in this film. A favorite detail is that luffys movements actually sound like real rubber. The artstyle is attractive but doesn't have the emersion into One Piece's cartoony world due to the grounded drawings.
Nice, a One piece video. I hope you can do a vid analizing some of the best animation from the Wano arc, like episode 982, 1015, 1033 or the recent 1061. There is also an incredible episode 1062 coming. Or maybe just do an overall overview of the difference between the drastic change between post-timeskip One Piece and Wano and the production behind them.
The western cartoon influence in that scene was cool to see since we’ll hopefully be getting that wacky looney tunes animation in these next couple months
i don't go here but honestly i think i might watch this ova just for the animation alone. i've always admired that old retro style for anime, it's so gorgeous- this and the jojo's bizarre adventures ovas are at the top of the list of things i want to watch lol
on that note, there is a toei animated sonic ova that was turned into a movie but even then it's still. SO cool to watch. it's not beautiful more than it is that it just has a Really Cool Style- the one Tyson Hesse (? don't remember if i'm getting him mixed up with someone else or not but iirc Tee Lopes worked on the OST) was trying to emulate, mainly in Mania, for reference
and i know it's sort of the point because so many different animators worked on this, but it's mainly so reminiscent of fullmetal alchemist and naruto for me which i find really cool too!!!
Maaaan the One Piece anime was rough for a long while with cheap zoom ins, cuts back and forth on the same frames, etc. So interesting getting to see OP in that nolstagic 90s anime aesthetic.
Oh, that's actually an interesting fact that Goro Taniguchi having not worked on One Piece til Film Red. Because in that movie their is a very blink-and-you-miss-it cameo of Ganzack in a Bar.
Ahhh so that's where he appears. During the research stage, I brieflyy read something about an appearance in Film Red but was confused about where and when.
Once you mentioned Cowboy Bebop i instantly believed Yutaka Nakamura is the goat of action animation. To this day its still my 1# Anime pick and it still looks way better then most modern Animes God these fights are so clean
Holy shit, I didn't even realize but this was my first One Piece anime... I remember seeing it on adult swim as a kid and loving it but never seeing any more of it until the past year or so when I decided to give OP another shot. I started watching and... It didn't feel right. Something was off, it didn't feel like the experience that I had as a kid in the least. I stopped watching after a few episode, thinking nostalgia was getting the best of me and coming to the conclusion that OP wasn't for me. Until I watched this and realized that the OP I've been trying to watch isn't the same one that I'd actually watched.

Wish they had stuck with this style. Looks so much better than what we now have.
wow, old school shaded zoro is exactly what i love in animes
Honestly. I think the more grounded look of the OVA is better than the actual anime
I kinda do too in some ways. Its a fun take!
Wow, never knew about this one, the animation looks incredible!
Thanks for the video but the ears tidbit is wild. I am never going to unsee that.
Given that the manga was still on the Syrup Village arc when this was animated, the fact that Ganzack says he's close to being Pirate King is downright hilarious. My guy, you'd get atomised the moment you set foot outside East Blue.
1:53 bro got her lookin like denzel quincy crocker from fairy odd parents💀
The way they did the story for this movie kinda reminds me of how the first three Dragon Ball movies are where it's like a retelling of an arc but with an original villain
This is the first time I noticed how Oda draws his ears and now I can’t unsee it
I like how the women look like women and dont all have Double Fs or whatever Toei does to make them look ridiculous.
Thats not Toel. Thats Odas style. Their just making it Manga accurate.
Toei sometimes exaggerates Oda's style.
I love the OVA so much, thanks for making a video showing this
I wish more anime adaptations would change up their art styles when adapting. Keep it recognizable but also make the art style look better in animation. Sometimes manga art style just doesn’t look good in animation. It makes sense why they don’t, but I think a lot of series could benefit from it. This definitely shouldn’t be most as a lot of manga art styles translate well to animation.
I understand, but I feel like changing one pieces artstyle is a no-go.
@@ProjektTaku it just doesn’t work in animation. It’s like specifically designed for a flat manga. This art style update works well in animation
@@thomasffrench3639 tell that to wano.
@@ProjektTaku still think the same. Any art style can be well animated. I just think that changing it up can make it better. It makes sense for a weekly series to be faithful in art style, so its no big deal
When that does happen, manga puriests complain. 😂
this is a great video.
I would love for there to be another One Piece Film that is basically "OK Director, you can whatever the hell you want, it's none canon after all".
It's crazy that movie came out in 2005 yet its character/colour design still feels so fresh and modern. Timeless stuff.
Could not agree more
bc its a movie and not a weekly anime
This anime feels like how the Hunter x Hunter 1999 anime felt like
Gotta say I like the character design and animation for this one a lot better than the main show.
First time I ever heard someone mention Space Dandy IN MY LIFE, I love you man.
We want Forgotten relics TO TALK ABOUT ONE PIECE MORE! I DEMAND IT!
Exceptional analysis. I never got into one piece because of the Animation and artistic choice post 2000, but I absolutely adore the 1998 style which I have never heard of before, with the fluid animation if they had kept it I would certainly have got into it.
Thanks again for this excellent video.
I want to tell you that the 90s style did not disappear in the early 2000s, just see anime like Inuyasha, GTO, Mon Colle Knights
the years 1999,2000,2001,2002 are a mix of old and new, in fact we say the 90s as the period 1990-1999 but in reality it is 1991-2000 the last decade of the 20th century but a lot of people make this mistake
Would be fun to also make videos like this for Black Clover and Land of the Lsutrous as well, given they also had mostly forgotten PVs with very different styles.

Great video, always look forward to your content - it's consistently great. High quality youtube videos to eat dinner to
Defeat the Pirate Ganzak is legendary.
Facts.
Oh yeah i saw this OVA during the one piece anniversary stream actually wity my best friend. He's a huge one piece fan so this was a cool piece of history
God I'd love to see Sanji and Usopp in this style too.
AYE whats with that random messenger call LOL i got tripped up lolol
The animation is mazing! However Kazumi is way better at adapting Oda's charming artstyle to an anime. But I absolutely love the color, animation, and sound design in this film. A favorite detail is that luffys movements actually sound like real rubber. The artstyle is attractive but doesn't have the emersion into One Piece's cartoony world due to the grounded drawings.
1:23 why is sanjis ears so low it's near his mouth. bro can he hear him self eat loudly 😂😂

So this is just the One Piece version of the 1999 Hunter x Hunter.
SO cool to watch. it's not beautiful more than it is that it just has a Really Cool Style- the one Tyson Hesse (? don't remember if i'm getting him mixed up with someone else or not but iirc Tee Lopes worked on the OST) was trying to emulate, mainly in Mania, for reference
and i know it's sort of the point because so many different animators worked on this, but it's mainly so reminiscent of fullmetal alchemist and naruto for me which i find really cool too!!!
i remember Oda talking about this and him lowk geeking out in a VERY early sbs iirc
I’ve seen edits and art of One Piece in 90s anime form but seeing it as an actual thing is awesome
I heard Bladee and was so confused, started looking around for any tabs I could have open with him playing.
i thought my youtube glitched and was playing a different video because that happens so much to me 😭
At least the original one had an ending
Literally never looked like the thumbnail. Seeing the DBZ kind of animation One Piece suddenly gets, its good webhave thus video.
3:29 I love Koizumi's designs so much lmao
Maaaan the One Piece anime was rough for a long while with cheap zoom ins, cuts back and forth on the same frames, etc. So interesting getting to see OP in that nolstagic 90s anime aesthetic.
Never been interested in One Piece before, but the OVA looks like something I can get into. Love the cel animation.
dam, that looks so good. We were robbed
Tbh the original one piece designs make me feel like there similar to pokemon red and blue anime design.
Once you mentioned Cowboy Bebop i instantly believed Yutaka Nakamura is the goat of action animation.
To this day its still my 1# Anime pick and it still looks way better then most modern Animes
God these fights are so clean
Great I can't unsee One Piece neck ears now.
The old art is getting me. I want it
Holy shit, I didn't even realize but this was my first One Piece anime...
That animation style is a lot better
I REALLY love this art style, thank you for this video, its so well done!
