Step 1 for adjusting a Yamaha XS650 Valves. This covers cycle of function and set-up.
Valves must be adjusted with a cold engine.
Someone recently asked me about rotating the engine backwards and why you can't do this. Well, you can. It will not hurt it. However, you are taking tension off of the cam and cause a bit of slack. Doing this makes the cam a little sloppy and can cause the gauge reading to be off. That's why I only turn the engine one way and not back and forth.
