    Great Job On This "How To Video" I just happen to have a Yamaha XS650s motorcycle & it's been down due to hard staring it up, I just had the needle & seat done & I think the mechanic forgot to do this part of the repairs, so I think I will check this out on my bike. Thanks again for the education in this part of my bike I don't know how to do. I look forward to another educational video on this type of bike again - ( The Yamaha XS650s ) because this student is all ears. Thanks03 - 29 - 2017

    After struggling with no spark on points, now I need a tutorial on how to swap the electronic ignition from my 82 onto my 76 because I'm pulling my hair out over this shit, lmao. Thank you for the video regardless. I will keep trying and hopefully nail down this no spark gremlin. Light never comes on. And yes, the light works! Power to the rest of the bike (tail light, head light, neutral switch etc.) but zero spark when using my test light on the points. They look in rough shape. I set the gap properly and tightened the cam chain tensioner. Aghhhh

    • @Amotorcyclenut
      @Amotorcyclenut  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the light never comes on, it means that the ignition circuit is not getting power or the kill switch is the problem. Keep trying your close.

      I know this is old but hey…
      Be absolutely certain there isn’t an oily film on the points….oil will ground out your points and there will be no spark.

    Is there a way to do this without a battery on the bike? Have the same bike but it no longer is hooked up to a battery to have current in the system. I have to rely on the power I get from kicking it over. My multimeter says I have power at the point when it's kicked over but no spark whatsoever.

      No I don't, but the process is basically the same. If your bike does not run us the Static method. Static Ignition timing th-cam.com/video/aziKRn5fwsA/w-d-xo.html If your bike does run and you want to get it dialed in exactly for easy starts and great performance us the Dynamic method. Nutguy, thanks for the video, been a while since I static timed. Question - turning the motor on starter, no plugs - I notice sparks flying off the points themselves (am not talking about the tiny arc between points) - newish points (500ml on them), no sparks escaping from your points when running. Are the sparks normal?, have never noticed them on any other points bike being turned over or run. Any ideas?, if it was a British bike I'd be thinking condenser/s. Greetings from a Brit' in Sydney Australia BTW - Dare I say "Let's go Brandon"?

    • @Amotorcyclenut
      @Amotorcyclenut  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes sparks are normal. Dirty , oily or pitted points will spark more. Larger spark plug gaps will make the points spark more. As far as Brandon goes, have him hold the spark plug on his tongue and his hand on the side of the engine while cranking the starter. Don't release the starter button until the sparking between the points stop sparking. Recharge your battery and have him check the other cylinder spark plug.

    • @Amotorcyclenut

      Disconnect the points wires from the coil connection and use a continuity tester or a VOM.

    Hi, I have a 1985 Yamaha xj700, I've rewired it with minimal wiring just to get it to run for now. However, I'm not getting power to my coils when I go to start it. All it does is turnover. One thing I've noticed though is when I have the plug out and it grounded to the motor, I will touch the terminal to the battery and I will see the plug make a spark off the engine block. But it will not when I turn it over. Can anyone help me diagnose this and possibly what to do? Totally lost...

    What type of bulb do you use to test because I have one and doesn’t turn on any any position, I turn the engine, but nothing. Only turns on when I connect directly to battery. What is a good lightbulb to use and what is the voltage, I would appreciate the response.

    • @Amotorcyclenut
      @Amotorcyclenut  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use a 12 volt bulb. The light comes on when the points are open, if the points are open and the light is not on means that you don't have power going to ignition circuit, or the points are shorted out.

    Hay I'm looking for some help! I have a 78 Yamaha xs650 and I have no spark I took the steps in the video and I only have power to the points when I take out the plate with the points screwed to it. When I put the plate with points back in the points loose power. Like they're grounding out to the engine when I reinstall the points and it doesn't matter if the points are open or closed. What do I need to do?

    • @Amotorcyclenut
      @Amotorcyclenut  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's hard to say with out seeing it. But if I had to guess I would say check where you connection at the wire to the points. You are missing a insulator or you put the wire on the wrong side of the insulator thus shorting out the points.

    • @Amotorcyclenut
      @Amotorcyclenut  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I means that the points are dirty and or not making contact. That also means you have no spark!

      I've been chasing a no spark gremlin lol. Weird thing is that i changed that point with a "new"' unit, but I'm wondering if it had corroded after sitting oh the shelf for decades cuz it doesn't look shiny and new by a long shot...

    • @Amotorcyclenut
      @Amotorcyclenut  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That happens, you'll need to clean them with some fine emery paper and check the continuity with your multi-meter. Then they should work.
