    I thougt that the timingchain should have allways the same Tensiondirection… anticlockwise ??

    Very good instructions. Not sure if you can or will help with a conundrum I have with timing. Say for the right cylinder and the test light on the top points I line up the fire mark with the mark on the fly wheel. The test light comes on way to early. I try to adjust the backing plate to turn off the test light and set it correctly but there's not enough travel in the backing plate. Hope this makes sense. I have pictures if that helps.

      You might try checking the position of your advance rod! Mine had to be reset to where the rod would push the bracket at the right time. It’s not the easiest thing in the world, but set your gaps when the rod pushes both brackets and you should be pretty close, hope this helps!

    Awesome video brodie. just a question on the wiring. Are you using (2) single output ignition coils then condensers?

    Hey mate I’ve followed yours instructions up to the point with the test light and for some reason the light is staying on through full rotation. What have I done wrong?

    Say bud are swapping the stock gearing? Also what jetting are you running ( bs 38).beautiful bike. Love the tank color

      @@2wheelworkshop well some ppl just widen the hole in the stock jets,thats what the "old school " guys did,probably what he did because maybe he couldn't just order ,but it sounds good 👍 also the reason I asked about the sprockets is because it made a huge difference on my 80 xs .at 70 mph with stock gearing,it was really whining,i changed rear sprocket down two teeth and now it has more throw in 5th gear and whining at high speeds is subdued a lot.it really helped,i think the problem is the bike being 40+ yrs old and geared for the speed limit then.anyhow,sorry for the long comment and I hope that helps ya! Beautiful bike btw

    Great Video. I'm working on a '75 XS650 and I was wondering about Electronic Ignition compared to points & condenser?

    • @2wheelworkshop
      @2wheelworkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate. Electronic ignition is pretty much maintenance free once set up correctly whereas point coil requires periodic adjustment and maintenance. I can't comment on any of the electronic kits out there for the xs as I have no experience with them. I may try Electronic in the future but I would do my research first. Points may be a pain as far as maintenance is concerned but they are unlikely to leave you stranded which I have heard some of the aftermarket set ups can do.

    I'm going back through my 1975 SX650. I bought it new. Now, I'm an amputee. I lost my left leg in a below the knee amputation. I would prefer to use all of the gears of my gear box, so I need to find a different way to shift. I have noticed some after market adapters to move the shifting to the left hand grip (designs range from $3,000 to $100). I can design my own using a solenoid and a Harley type shifter. Do you have any recommendations about what to do or not to do? Thank You!

    • @2wheelworkshop
      @2wheelworkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear about the amputation. I can think of a few options. You could build your own using a solenoid (i have also seen pneumatic actuators and air reservoirs used) but it is unlikely that you would get it 100% right on the first design and it would take a lot of testing and re-design (i enjoy that kind of thing but not everyone does).
      You could move the shifter to the right foot using linkages then install a thumb brake like Mick Doohan had but this would also require you to change the rear wheel to a later, hydraulic disk brake model. These build it yourself options have an open ended price tag due to the inevitable need to re-design and improve whereas the commercial options provide a measure of certainty but likely at a higher price. It all depends on what your willing to spend vs how much effort/frustration you're willing to invest. Good luck with it.

      Also, it’s a pretty common practice amongst older dirt, flat-track racers to modify these XS motors to right hand shift for racing purposes. You could find a racer that knows a machinist that would do the work.

    Hey quick question. When doing the timing, how can you tell when right side is on compression stroke

    • @2wheelworkshop
      @2wheelworkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check to see that both valves are closed. There should be a little bit of play in each of the rockers on that cylinder.

    • @2wheelworkshop
      @2wheelworkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Run with 0.15mm for exhaust and 0.05mm for inlet and you should be fine.
