This was one of my mother's favorite songs and music videos when I was growing up. She always commented on how she thought how pretty this video is. She passed back in February 2024, and even now I cry when I hear this song. I miss her everyday. Love you mom ❤

This is very sad your mother passed away such a short time ago. Both my mom and dad have been gone for some years now. I can say that with certainty: your mother(her words and deeds)will still live in your heart and thoughts. We will be praying that you have comfort in the hard days ahead. Blessings.

From a songwriting perspective, this is a masterclass in dynamics. Each of the three masters up their game in the 3rd verse, building the song to a crescendo that’s essentially unmatched in popular music. It’s not about volume. It’s not about tempo - but it is (as Jeff Porcaro would say) about “lope.” The song leaps ahead in the third verse - starting the with bass line, under the “Devil and the deep blue sea behind me” lyric - that’s a perfect “on ramp” to what’s about to come. Stewart plays hi-hat and rim clicks up to this point, but then erupts with tasty snare fills, kick drum and ride cymbal (on the chorus) that elevates the song. Andy’s (added) guitar part sounds like an alarm blaring: it’s subtle, but it’s a great guitar “hook” alerting listeners to the upcoming chorus. And the lyrics leading into the third chorus are among Sting’s best (and that’s saying something): “I will turn your face to alabaster: when you'll find your servant is your master: you'll be wrapped around MY finger.” What a brilliant twist! The whole song comes alive, with each musician playing an equal part in building the dynamics. This is how songs can, and should “move”. It’s not quantized. It’s not even about tempo. It’s about chops, mastery of instruments, and songwriting. Thank you Sting, Andy and Stewart.

55 year old lady here who has loved The Police from the moment I first heard them. I was about 9 yrs old and "Walking on the Moon" was on some Saturday morning TV show - I was immediately HOOKED! I had some very dark times when I was a kid but I SWEAR - the music, talent and lyrics these gentlemen gave us actually saved my life! I have EVERY album they ever made (both vinyl and CD) and I also had the privilege of seeing them perform live in London several years ago. There are billions of singers/songwriters and musicians out there BUT seldom are there people that can do all 3 (i.e. sing, play AND write good lyrics)! Stewart, Andy and Sting, however, have more talent in their little fingers than most of us have in our whole bodies. Love you guys and thank you so very much! xxx

They weren't even in the "just as good as any other band" club they were in a league of their own both in live ticket sales and income which is why they aren't mentioned among the others; they are not comparable, particularly when the musicianship in the 80s was on the decline due to the increased use of sampling and drum machines and less of a need for actual talent.

    Stewart Copeland’s drumming is...sublime.
At 3:30, in the softer “Devil and the deep blue sea” section, and right after the next line, “Vanish in the air you’ll never find me”, Copeland brings it all back in with a single snare flam, and it’s so impeccably tasteful, so effective, so impactful in its simplicity...and so very perfect for the song, that it’s stunning.
So many other drummers would have tried to fill that space (or really wanted to) with a busy, thundering (and yawningly predictable) huge drum fill...
    But Copeland? Nope.
With that one flam on the snare, he “says” more than any 20 piece kit drummer could ever hope to present by pounding out some “big” fill, and rounding half a dozen toms in a pseudo Phil Collins “In The Air Tonight” style.
Part of being a great player, particularly those that play as part of a band, is to play in ways that best serve the song, instead of serving themselves (and their own egos) with a “look how many push-ups I can do!” bragging style in their playing.
Copeland is an amazing drummer to be sure, and it’s not that he can’t play technically complex fills or drum patterns, (because he absolutely can), but...he’s also a great MUSICIAN, because he has that rare gift of playing in a way that is always so very tasteful, and with parts that always serve any song he’s playing so incredibly well.
    IMO.
    🙏

That single, potent, explosive flam is the pivot point of the track and is simple, subtle genius. Watch the recent Japan version too for more of it when Stu comes down from the huge array of percussion to pick up the bridge on his kit………just awesome.

    • @donnythompson408
      @donnythompson408 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@nicprs5109 - thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely check that out. 🙏
The other thing about that snare flam that I forgot to mention, is that Copeland doesn’t (predictably) hit a crash cymbal on the downbeat after it, and that makes the flam all the more elegant.
Sometimes (often, in fact), it’s what ISN’T played - a drum fill, a guitar lead, a bass riff, etc. - that can be far more tasteful (and way more effective and impactful) than any fancy drum fill or shredding guitar riff could ever convey.
Stewart Copeland is a master of dynamics, and part of that mastery is recognizing both when and what NOT to play, and in letting a song breathe by allowing an exquisite sense of space to exist.
      IMHO.
      🙏😊

Copeland's drumming on this track is sensational. You can hear lots of reggae influence.
He always had his own style and sound which made him one of the all time best drummers in rock n roll history.

Ben Rayonez he very well may’ve just got the year mixed up.
My mom in her early 70s many times misdates events in her past; most times she underestimates the time that has passed, but sometimes she overshoots.
Most people do not track dates well.

    Already here, 42 years ago.
I gotta say, I've always been impressed with this video set.
As a triple fire sign, and a person obsessed with candles and firelight, this video had me captivated, along with the seductive song.
How they didn't set the set on fire is beyond me.
I love how Stewart has his own little avenue cubby for his kit. ❤
The whole thing is great. This song pops into my head randomly even now, monthly at least.
It was a good time in my life.
Also, at 60, I've been feeling a need for sunglasses like Gordon wears in the video. Except mine need to be Rx these days, lol.
