The US Venus exploration rocket XY21 crashed off the Mediterranean island of Sicily in a meteorite impact on its return to Earth. Eight of the 17 crew members died from Venusian atmospheric toxicity, and two of the crew, Colonel Calder, the commander, and Dr Sherman, were rescued by island fishermen after the crash, just before the rocket went down, but Dr Sherman died from atmospheric poisoning. The Colonel, the only survivor, was injured in his left arm, but he worked with his superior, Major General McIntosh, biologist Dr Yule and a senior official of the Italian State Department to track down the life form captured on Venus. The container containing the life-form is found on the beach by a young fisherman boy, Pepe, who brings it to Dr Leonardo, an Italian biologist staying on the island, who attempts to transfer the hatched organism to a research facility at the Rome Zoo. The eema, which begins to grow rapidly due to the Earth's atmospheric composition, destroys the transfer cage and escapes, and is cornered in a farmer's barn, but the farmer is killed and the capture is unsuccessful. Under the command of Colonel Calder, a search is launched by a US H19 helicopter, which uses sulphur bait, which is Yima's food, as a decoy to energise a net overhead and succeeds in capturing it. Later, at the Rome Zoo research facility, Yima was put into a low-voltage dormant state and the press was allowed to interview him... After being awakened by an electrical accident in the facility, Yima broke down a wall, knocked down the elephants in the park and escaped into the city of Rome, killing civilians. However, he was cornered by an Italian-donated US M24 light tank and a British 6-pounder towed Bren gun carrier, and finally took multiple bullets at the top of the Colosseum, from which he fell to his death. Harryhausen, who had longed to shoot the film in colour but was unable to do so due to budget constraints, commissioned Legend Films to colourise the film in 2007, five years after director Juran's death, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its release.

アメリカの金星探査ロケットXY21 は、地球に帰還する際に隕石衝突で地中海のシシリー島沖に墜落しました。隊員17名のうち8名は金星大気の毒性で死亡、隊長のカルダー大佐とシャーマン博士の2名は墜落後にロケットが沈む寸前に島の漁師に助け出されましたが、シャーマン博士は大気毒に侵されており死亡。唯一の生存者である大佐は左腕を負傷しながらも金星で捕獲した生命体の行方を上官のマッキントッシュ少将、生物学者ユール博士、イタリア国務省高官と協力して追うことに。生命体が入った容器は漁師の少年ペペが海岸で見つけ、島に滞在していたイタリアの生物学者レオナルド博士に持ち込み、博士は孵化した生物をローマ動物園の研究施設に移送しようとします。地球の大気成分によって急速に成長し始めたイーマは移送用の檻を破壊して逃げ出し、農家の納屋に追い詰められますが農夫を殺害し捕獲は失敗。カルダー大佐指揮の下、米軍H19ヘリで捜索を開始しイーマの食料である硫黄の餌を囮に上空から網を被せて通電し捕獲に成功します。その後ローマ動物園研究施設でイーマは低電圧の休眠状態にされて、プレスの取材も許可されたのですが…。施設内の電気事故で覚醒したイーマは壁を破壊し園内の象も倒してローマ市街に逃走し市民も犠牲になりました。しかし、イタリア供与の米軍M24軽戦車や英軍6ポンド砲牽引ブレンガンキャリアに追い詰められ、最後はコロッセオ頂上部で複数の銃弾を受け、そこから転落して絶命しました。
カラー撮影を切望するも予算の制約からそれが叶わなかったハリーハウゼンは、監督ジュランが亡くなった5年後の2007年、レジェンド・フィルムにカラーライズを依頼し、公開50周年記念としてカラー化を実現させました。

まだアナロク放送だった頃テレビ東京で深夜に放送されていた映画で録画で見た映画だったなあ・・・・・
カラーライズで思い出すのは、卒業アルバムでほとんど白黒写真で一部の写真に色を付ける選択肢がありました。そのぶんアルバム代は高くなりますので生徒にアンケートをとっていた（白黒または一部カラー）。日本の誘拐身代金の白黒映画でストーリーの中で目印の煙にだけ色を付けて上映されていました。

金星竜イーマのデザインが単なる爬虫類じゃないのが良いです。バージル・フィンレイっぽい感じもします。
1930～50年代に活躍したアメリカのイラストレーター(挿絵画家)ですね。イーマは1957年当時のデザイン感覚で、雰囲気として繋がるところは確かにありますね。

すぐわかりますね。
本作品は知りませんでしたが、重機関銃やバズーカでダメージを負うモンスターは、
現代のいかなる攻撃も受け付けないそれとは対照的に、いかにも生き物的でもあり、
どこか悲しそうにも見えました。
この作品は先行して映画化されていた「キングコング」へのオマージュです。テーマは異世界からやってきた生命の悲劇。生息地の金星から2千万マイル離れた地球に連れて来られたイーマこそが被害者であるように感じます。

遅まきながら、ググってみました。 ハウゼンさん初の欧州ロケ、
「キングコング」へのオマージュ、だったんですね。
昔のモンスター物には、「異形であるが故の悲しみ」を描いている作品が
多くありました。これもそのような作品だったのでしょうか。
イーマ竜は「宇宙船」で知り、映画は社会人になってからモノクロで観ました。
どこか愛嬌があって動きが人間臭く感じたせいか、無理矢理連れて来られた奴隷が迫害されているようにも見えてしまいました。
頭を空っぽにして楽しんでも許される映画かも知れませんが、「キングコング」のオマージュと知った後ではそうもいきません。
異形・異種の悲哀・悲劇の物語です。どこかの国の保守的な政策集団に観てもらってイーマの視点でコメントしてほしいところです。

あらゆるジャンルと舞台で古くから描かれて来たテーマですが、観客が学びを得るとは限らないのでしょうね。
娯楽作品だからこそ考えるきっかけとして良い入り口だと思うのですが、いくつか思い当たる政策集団以外の身近な人達もイーマの視点を持てずにいると思います。
