- Adine’s journey with elephants began over 25 years ago when her mother, Lente Roode, hand-reared their first orphaned elephant. Today, the Jabulani Herd consists of 16 elephants - 11 of which are rescued orphans and five that were born to the herd over the years.
In 2019, Adine founded Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development or ‘HERD’ as a response to a growing number of young orphaned elephant calves that needed a place of rehabilitation where they could join an existing herd that would accept them unconditionally.

Herd Jabulani elephants are our babies, we watch them every day, since 2020 when the lockdown started, all their stories are posted on a daily basis on youtube channel and their own website, life changed for a whole bunch of ppl all over the world when we started following the Herd, congratulations to Adine and the entire team of Carers and all the workers that have made this possible, we truly love you and are grateful to be part of your lives, as you have become a part of our families.
Yes, Alina! Life definitely changed for me when I started watching in 2020. There was a hopeful shift inside me that has only strengthened over the years. There are good people, good works and beautiful outcomes happening.
Adine's work at HERD is incomparable. I began watching their TH-cam channel just as the pandemic lockdown started and Khanyisa was starting rehabilitation. I highly recommend watching their videos!

Adine reminds me of Dame Daphne of the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. The only difference is that Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage releases all the elephants back into the wild. It's awesome. Watch the documentary.
It's actually not that different. As Shepherd said here, they're still wild animals. They have the support and supplements and safe haven of the stables at night, but during the day they walk around the wildlife reserve and swim and mud bathe and dust and browse and forage and play and spar and chase other animals and protect against predators and take care of the babies and love each other in their herd-family--all the things elephants do naturally in the wild.
With Sheldrick, the elephants are raised in rehabilitation centers in Tsavo National Park and one in Umani Springs, an easier environment for elephants with disabilities. There the carers offer the same kind of care: support, supplements, veterinary treatment and the safety of night-time communal compounds. They also offer milk and parental supervision for the younger orphans who have just come from the Nairobi Nursery. As the elephants grow up, they choose if and when they return to the wild. They are never actually released, they are just free to come and go as they please. (If dependant orphans who still need milk and protection go missing in a panic stampede or something, they will of course find them and guide the very grateful and relieved babies back to the herd. But if they're old enough and choose to go, they are allowed to leave and monitored to make sure they are doing okay.) Some elephants join a wild herd and never return. But most of them form herds of ex-orphans and come back to visit or when they are wounded and need help. In recent years of climate-crisis droughts, providing water has saved the lives of ex orphans and wild elephants alike, as well as all manner of animals. It's amazing to see enormous wild bulls patiently waiting for the bowser truck to fill the water trough. Also some of the orphaned bulls who have completely returned to the wild still return regularly to check on all their little brothers and sisters. Especially Laikipia, who reminds me of Jabulani and how he always came to check on Khanyisa like the wonderful big brother he is. Laikipia is 24 and a magnificent big bull, awe-inspiring but gentle. Though completely rewilded and independent, he regularly visits the reintegration centre and gently interacts with the small orphans, giving them, much needed knowledge of older wild elephants and a role model to learn from. At first the new babies run away, having never seen such an enormous elephant before. Then they heroworship him, dogging his footsteps like puppies and emulating all his behaviours. Laikipia has been wild for over a decade but has never ceased to visit the orphans regularly.
The most wonderful thing is the mothers always immediately return to introduce their newborns, 55 so far, plus a "great grandchild." They never force an elephant to go wild, nor shut the door on them if they return for whatever reason. For example, Murera who has permanent injuries to her hind legs after stepping on a spike trap (humans can be so cruel, like Khanyisa's injuries from the snare were horrific!) Murera is the matriarch of the Umani Springs herd having survived but with a severe limp. She, unlike the others, avoids wild elephants probably due to her disability. She adopted as her son a young bull named Luggard the Lionheart whose hind knee had been shattered by a bullet. When he died after years of brave struggle, Murera was devastated. She who never left her herd nor went near wild elephants, went on a "wild safari" for a few days then returned. Pregnant, as it turned out. She evidently wanted a baby to fill the hole left by Luggard. She has never left her herd again and just gave birth to a little girl named Mwana. Up until now, all wild born babies have been born to mothers who returned to the wild. But though they left her out the first night to see if she would rewild, that did not go well and they had scrapes and bruises the next day. So the second night they offered Murera her usual "bedroom" and Murera brought Mwana inside. As Murera has difficulty walking she cannot protect her baby as a mother normally would. And as Murera is the matriarch she feels responsible for all the younger orphans. So the carers are leaving the door open either way, she can stay at the reintegration centre or as Mwana gets older join or form a wild herd.
All that to say (sorry, I'm really wordy!) that what HERD and SWT are doing is really different shades of grey rather than a black and white difference. They are both providing a rehabilitation compound and a protected wild park in slightly different ways. I think the biggest difference is HERD cannot let the rehabilitated elephants run free as the reserve is also home to ecotourism facilities and the HERD elephants are wild but human-habituated, and not being afraid of people in a park with many people could lead to dangerous situations. They would have to be translocated to another park with lots of human-free wilderness, which would separate the elephants that want to go wild from the elephants that want to stay home with their human-elephant family. So HERD simply can't let its elephants go completely wild the way SWT can, simply due to the safety concerns and constraints of their location.

It was Khanyisa who was the little rescued elephant and the star who introduced me to watching this channel. Since then, I have been following this wonderful herd full of elephant personalities. I love these animals, the only thing I miss sometimes is making birthday cakes for individual animals and they deserve it. Watching this herd is like good psychotherapy - I meet only noble, good souls in whose company I feel good. These animals have many of the characteristics that I look for in humans .

It's a excellent channel. I've watched it now for 3 years. The HERD is the most unique, semi wikd herd of elephants I have ever seen. The love that they have for each other, all most not related by family ties, is ostounding. That bulls live as a family with the grown females is a miracle. Adine is an outstanding teacher of how the Herd interact and live on the reserve.
I started watching this channel a few months ago and every day i watch one. I constantly rewatch old ones. Adine is truly remarkable along with the Carers at HERD.

I watch 'my' elephants every day. I've purchased bottles for Khanysa sponsored in my mother's name and I absolutely adore the animals and the people who care for them! I am disabled and live in Canada so I will never see them in person, so I'm really grateful for their TH-cam so I can still watch and learn from these magnificent animals ❤

I've watched the Herd for 4 years now. It's a up close look at how the elephants eat, sleep, etc in their natural habitat. Adine and all the staff are so friendly. When I was a little girl (or meisiekind as Adine would say), Jane Goodall was my hero. I was reading a book called When Elephants Weep and when I wrote to Jane about the suffering of the elephants, she wrote me back a very inspiring letter I have previously kept in the book ever since. My subsequent love of elephants led me to watching all Adine's videos and supporting her amazing work. She's my new Jane Goodall, I am so inspired by her. Visiting Jabulani lodge is at the top of my bucket list. 💙💚🐘❤

In the 1990s we made a programme for TV on Jabulani when he was a youngster. His babysitter was Lammie. He loved Lente; Andine’s mother..

To be able to go up to a fully mature male, or female, elephnant and lightly place your hands on their trunsk must be both a privilege and an honour. Im nearly 70 and it has been one of my goals since being a young boy and given a chance to ride on the back of the then elelphant ride in Belle Vue Manchester. This was long before it was polically correct not to do so. I vowed then to be able to do it as I was too young to be allowed to do it on the day. To be able to do it in their natural habitat would be my way of saying Thank you. Im glad that elephant rides for profit are a thing of the past (well I really hope so). This video was both informative and a pleasure seeing someone doing their best to help these magnificent creatures.

In all honesty tho-- we see all the wonderful stuff these humans experience w the elephants but reality dictates that-- wonderful moments CANNOT BE without heartache somewhere along the way. As wonderful as all this is....they have HAD TO witness tragedy somewhere. Knowing the lil bit i know about how some of the ppl who live close to the elephant over there-- they are destitute and poor-- so they torture and maim elephants--I'd not be able to endure that agony that would kill me inside. I'd never pull thru that as the same woman. Adine, believe me when I say-- she (and her crew) has had to see things we likely could not handle. These folks LIVE this life, they dont only visit as we do! This is their life! They're extremely strong humans! I admire then emensely. Oh, n I love elepha so too!lol

An admirable woman and outstanding effort by all at HERD. Elephants need strong advocacy more than ever. We were disturbed however to see BULLHOOKS being carried by many of the carers in this video. As decades-long advocates for elephants, both in captivity and in the wild we know that sanctuaries, zoos and many conservation orgs like Amboseli Trust for Elephants; and the Human Society of the United States and PAWS (Performing Animal Welfare Society) sanctuary, worked to pass SB 1062 and SB 313, to BAN the cruel use of bull hooks on elephants. We can't wait until the day when legislation like this will become universal.
I did not know this, I thought those "sticks" they were carrying were for some other benign reason. I hope Adine will address this issue.
