Adine is Surrounded by Khanyisa, Timisa & All the Elephants as they Investigate Her Grazed Knee

- If anything shows elephants’ incredible sense of smell, it will be this moment! Not one elephant passing by Adine & Tigere out in the reserve misses the chance to smell and investigate Adine’s grazes knee (acquired from a recent cycling accident)!
Adine rumbles and Khanyisa comes speed walking over - followed by little Timisa! It’s fascinating to watch Timisa’s reaction to Adine’s knee compared to the other elephants.
Khanyisa wants to play with Timisa as always but the six year old has other plans. Soon Limpopo and Kumbura move in to see what the fuss is all about and their trunks go straight to Adine’s knee. There’s no hiding from an elephant!
Klaserie proves to be the most curious and overly attentive as she cannot stop herself trying to figure out the injured knee. The herd know Adine well and react to wounds on each other in the same way. Adine is part of the herd to them in many ways and they endeavour to make sure she is ok.
Klaserie has so much confidence compared to her mother, Setombe, having grown up in a more settled and protected environment than her mother who was orphaned and rescued from being killed with the rest of the original herd in Zimbabwe in 2002.
Bubi’s reaction is just as interesting and telling, revealing Bubi’s cautious and nervous character. Due to her past, having lost her mother to poachers and being orphaned, Bubi is not easy to warm to others, or to put herself out there. Unless of course she’s taking care of Khanyisa. But she shows her interest in Adine’s wound!
Tokwe the Matriarch moves in too and spends time beside Khanyisa while digging for roots and keeping the calf company in this dry river bed surrounded by vegetation for all the herd to enjoy.
It also seems that they're reassuring themselves that Adine is alright. They seem concerned that she has an injury and they need to know she's ok. They also seem to be comforting Adine as well. I think this is remarkable and shows the emotional intelligence elephants have. This channel is a revelation for me , to see the elephants and their carers daily interactions and how they live their lives is amazing.

Such a meaningful time with all the Ellie's concerned about Adine's knee. You can just see the love they have for their carers. I pray one day Bubi will have something click in her head that she can trust you and that you love her. I feel so bad for her because she was so traumatized with what ever happened to her when she was orphaned that she still can't trust 100%. You all are very very special people and your love for these Ellie's is so special!! Little Khanyisa wants to play with Timisa so bad but Timisa isn't wanting to. I loved this video!! Adine puts her heart and soul into these elephants and would do anything for them and it’s amazing how much they know she does. They give the same love back to her and it’s so amazing to see. Elephants have always been my favorite animals. There so huge but the most gentle animal ever.

So much fun - the elephants know that the smell can attract predators and they are familiar with the troubles of injuries. Their concern is genuine.

My cat also knows when I. Injured and comes to check me out. He (Shadow the cat) also seems to sense when I'm upset or in pain. He often will want to sit on me and rub his head on mine when I'm not feeling well. I am diagnosed with a number of health challenges such as Fibromyalgia (chronic pain), chronic fatigue syndrome and bipolar spectrum disorder (what was once called manic depression). I've named 3 but I have a list.
Shadow seems to know almost as soon as my pain flares or when I'm a bit down. He will sit on my chest and purr away for a while. He even goes hunting for mice and rats and brings them to me. My mum reckons that's because he thinks I am not very good at hunting.

I think they tried to coat Adine's injury with a bit of dirt to help her. God bless them. Adine's going to have to resign herself to having a dirty leg until she's all healed up lol.
I have a soft spot for Bubi, with her timid nature, sweet face, & beautiful long eyelashes. Finding out that when she was young she had to see her mommy being killed by evil men makes my heart melt for her even more.
Every HERD video shows how much the elephants need touch because they gently touch each other constantly. I wish every elephant in the world could have a herd.
It's so smart to rotate carers so the ellies don't get upset if one has to be away for a while.

They can probably smell the blood and even the repair molecules, wonderful sense of smell. They are not worried just curious how it happened, would love to see their expressions if they knew how it happened, tgese humans and their crazy contraptions!
The scene with Bubi, the poor elephant who clearly can't break his trauma and come closer, should be treated very well by the people. I feel sorry for him
This one of the most fascinating and wonderful videos that I have seen about the Herd elephants. It is amazing the deep care and concern that they have for Adine's injured leg. They have such complex emotions and they each display their emotions in their own unique ways. Adine has earned their concern and respect having been involved with them for so many years. What an honor to be so close with these beautiful elephants.

What a fantastic Mother's Day present, seeing all these ellies looking after little Khanyisa, but also, in a way, looking after all the human carers.
If the Herd can sense immediately an injury, can you imagine the trauma Bubi witnessed and went through. You could see that she wanted to ensure that Adine was ok, but held back from checking. Instead Bubi opted to stay near not moving from Adine's side. Poor dear Bubi the unforgettable memories etched in her head. She was very concerned. I so wanted to give Bubi a big hug of reassurance to let her know that all is well. 💝🐘💝

Adine is part of the Jabulani herd, and they are curious and worried about her. I imagine the call that "all is not well" went out pretty quickly after Kha-Tim got a whiff. Amazing.

I truly adore your herd of Ellies that have formed a unique family of love and protection that came from heartbreak and pain. I have come to love each and every one of them. To see them so concerned for their human allomother brings tears to my heart. I can never accept that this herd would ever be split apart for release as they have all bonded together. Even from my screen I can see, hear and feel them as if I were there. Not even one of them should be parted. Fishan's bravery and will to live and his quiet love for Bubi. The babies protected by all & the interactions all the ellies display together just glues them together forever. None of them should ever have to experience heartbreak again. They love you Adine and their devoted carers beyond limits. They put shame to us humans. Well done to your team family and all who give love and care unconditionally. Bless you all. I wish someday I could visit to greet each of you and express my diehard love to each of the elephants to let them know that they are loved around the world.

Dogs and cats would do the same. Elephants no doubt are more intelligent. But they all care for their human friends (even cats, at least many of them). Shows the social side of them.

@@Aurinkohirvi yeah they can probably smell the wound. My dogs do the same - I had a houseguest with a bandage on his leg and both my dogs couldn't stop licking the wounded area. It was quite gross actually lol but my friend didn't seem to mind.

I have suffered from PTSD, and it gradually became better over the last 25 years since the trauma. I hope Bubi can relax and trust more in the years to come.

What another awesome video with the Herd elephants and Adine and also the carer with Adine to keep the elephants calm and under control. But if I may say, the elephants were quite concerned about their sweet, loving and very caring human mom Adine which I thought was so sweet. I also feel that they only were caring for her because she has cared for them in all the years they have been under her care and her raising most of them too.🥰❤️🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘 This is absolute unconditional love and compassion for each other. Human and animals.❤️🥰 What I also absolutely loved was, not only were the elephants concerned but, they did almost go into a fit like I think it was Kumbura or Bubi that was so unsettled but didn’t go so crazy that sh could have gone into an absolute fit but she was able to calm down with the reassurance from Adine and the Carer too. That is definitely total control on the elephants part and the love and relationship that that elephant has for Adine and the Carer. Yes it breaks my heart! She wanted to investigate so bad and she just didn't. I feel so bad for her! I don't understand why she is still so untrusting with as long as they have had her and as much time that they spend with them. I found their behavior interesting and insightful. I would have watched every second had it been 5 hours long. Their concern and curiosity is truly a mind blowing experience.

Adine, elephants know energy of course. They are using technique of assessing injury and removing associated pain and discomfort. Maybe you could feel this. You even had an SI joint and thoracic spine assessment! Better than most human doctors can do! The Herd up close never ceases to amaze.
Seeing Babi paralyzed with fear, unable to come closer or to step away, broke my heart. It was obvious to me she was transformed back into her traumatic past. So consumed with the memory she couldn’t even move to step. I am crying for her.
Timisa was beside herself that something was wrong.
Klaserie is certainly the Doctor giving a good once over.
Bubi was so unhappy with things not being right that she stayed close a long time, she really has such a good caring heart and it was so good of Tokwe to reassure Bubi with her trunk hug. 💖💞💖💞💞
I immediately thought, Tokwe sensed from a distance Bubi’s concern and hesitancy and as the Matriarch it was in her heart to come to Bubi and gently reassure her. What a great Matriarch!

I'm particularly moved by Bubi's concern. She's one of my favorites. And I feel for the hard memories she has. The herd is a healing force - to each other and even a lot of us who watch them regularly.
The smell of blood doubtless features prominently in their younger traumatic experiences. They want to make sure nothing like that happens to Adine.

That was so sweet watching them inspecting Adine’s wound. It looks like they would inspect it and then think about it for a while so see what could be done. She is part of the herd and they love her. Little pinkness is so cute with wanting to spend time with her! What a lovely video!

Klasserie was seriously cupping the injury with her trunk. And poor Timissa seemed afraid/upset. As a young child would be when an allomother gets hurt. Even Bubi wanted to make sure you were ok, even though she still doesn't trust humans. She seemed very upset that you were hurt. And the other elephant putting their trunk in her mouth to help her, I assume.
I know your ultimate goal is to return them to the wild, and I believe I saw it mentioned that you would have to sever the bond you have with them, but I wonder if that is even possible or even desirable. They love you.
Such gentle, beautiful and civilised creatures. So attentive to each other, and humans it seems. We have a lot to learn from them. On YT you don't always appreciate their size, until they stand next to a human. I hope your knee heals well.

I love Timisa. Shy is a little bit shy I think, but so gentle. She has a lovely face 💖
I believe that what kept Bubi from. Aldine was Tigere. Then Tokwe sensing the slight tension in Adine & Tigere voices came over & put herself in the middle of Adine & Bubi. I understand perfectly the caution that Adine and Tigere feel for Bubi, but iwould have loved to see Bubi allowed to get closer to Adine. I myself as a tourist would be extremely aware of all the elephants, and particularly of limpopo (who can be in her curiosity and dominance aggressive), I think Bubi if allowed would have inspected Adine leg like the others. She was very aware of Tigere coming up in front and beside Adine and realized of all the ellies so far she was not going to get to be allowed near Adine. When they feel the babies are threatened, all of them have shown wild and aggressive behavior.
Tigereand the carers are very protective of Adine as well as the elephants.
Trauma is, when it occurs, is always in one's life. You learn to cope with it and keep it from controlling you. Bubi was definitely traumatized, and deserves the extremely tender attention she receives from Adine. If allowed and with supervision by like Tokwe or a carer , I hope she is allowed to be nearer to Adine. Bubi is well aware she is looked at the way she is, and it reinforces her trauma. She is blacklisted in a subtle sense,,and she is very aware of this.
Does this remind anyone of the telephone game. One elephant tells another elephant about Adine’s knee…. and it spreads around the Herd…😂😂😂😂

It's truly amazing how much the elephants love & respect Adine.
It's amazing how sensitive they are. I remember a while back when Adine's daughter had an injection (or had blood taken, I don't remember exactly) and the elephants reacted to her arm. And the way they sometimes touch/sniff Khanyisa's scar.
Just amazing how they can sense an injury. So cute how they run their trunks up and down her leg almost as a massage.

It appears that they smell the leg, pause to process the smell, and come back to check it again. They know it's not the normal smell and want to be sure Adine is ok. How wonderful!
