Baby Elephant, Khanyisa Chases Off The Warthogs! Plus Quality Time with the Herd!

  • In this new video, we meet up with the elephants in the morning, as Dr Rogers is arriving to check on Pisa, who recently had an abscess treated. Khanyisa is extra bolshy as she charges after the warthog in the area to chase them away from her herd. Spend time with Zindoga, Mambo, Tokwe and Timisa and get unique views of the underside of Khanyisa as Adine bonds with the little calf in the bush. We've had some rainfall, which has created patches of greenery, and we can't wait for even more rain to fall, to turn our wilderness into a verdant Eden for the wildlife again.

I was just thinking about the gentle ways of these animals ~ how deliberately they move and all they seem to sense around them. Added to that, the extreme emotional intelligence they portray.
What wonder to see them up close.

@@mortalclown3812 a friend of mine reported a travel in India... He wondered why an elephant took a man in his trunk and: threw him in the river!
His caregiver assured him that he needed not to fear the elephant. That man had treated the elephant badly years ago.
In fact the elephant was very gentle and careful with other humans, most tourists here...

@@edwigcarol4888 I've read about their facial recognition. There's a village in Africa (can't remember the country even lol) that hurts and even kills elephants because they eat their crops. The elephants in that area are very tolerant and peaceful with tourists, but if they see a villager they will charge them. I'm on team elephant 😉

How is pisa coming along. Is the abscess fully treated and almost gone? By the way, how do these abscesses come about? How does an elephant express pain?
I remember watching Fisham when he damaged his leg. It was hard to tell he was in pain. One of my favourite elephants! I admire him so much giving up his position as a patriarch because he knew his injury was an impediment for him to perform his duties. I so admire him!

I remember when they posted the video of them draining the abscess, they said they were pretty sure it had been caused by a type of sharp-tipped grass, and they thought that one had poked her in that sensitive area, which then caused the abscess to form. It looked so painful. I’m glad she’s doing better now, and she’s almost healed.

Some great video angles there Adine! Amazing to see Khanyisa so gentle stepping over you. And Zindoga pulling the grass out by holding the base of it with his foot so it doesn't end up with roots and dirt. Elephants are amazing!

I pray you get rain soon. Everything looks so dry. It amazes me how Adine just trudges thru the high grass without a worry. I, personally would have on hip boots. All the elephants seem to know their names. Is this possible?. Thank you for another great visit with our elephant family. 🇺🇸💕💗❤️🌺🌴💋

    • @DianaBamaRN
      @DianaBamaRN 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

Adine has said yes they all know their own names and you can see for yourself that when they hear their name they respond! I’ve recently seen studies that have discovered that they have specific names for each other just as we do. When communicating in any one of the ways they do, they identify specific elephants by using a consistent “name” for that specific herd member. Just as we do! Their intelligence knows no bounds and we were so very wrong to have believed that they were merely acting out of instinct or some other animal emotion like hunger.
Actually I’m my opinion we thought elephants and tons of other animals we not intelligent because we weren’t intelligent enough to develop ways of measuring and testing and proving this. As our intelligence and skills at developing monitoring/measuring tools increase we can now actually learn how smart these creatures actually have been all along!

Khanyisa certainly has a lot of confidence! It appears that she had to take matters into her own hands (so to speak) because no one else acted quickly enough to chase off the warthogs. Of course there is backup to support her, but she is very confident in her own ability. I can definitely see her as a herd leader if circumstances require it.

I could never harm them and, of course, this is their home too but ........ 'bye spiders! 👋. Lovely to see Meisiekind running, Mambo on his best behaviour (wonder what he's planning!) Way to go Khanyisa! You are quickly becoming an asset to your herd! For some time babies are essentially a burden to a herd. Dependent on their mom’s 24/7 and requiring the herds attention and protection in tons of situations. But at a point in their young lives that begins to slowly change as they start stepping into the roles they will play as adults. One role for females is protecting their herd from other wild animals. Khanyisa just did that, instead of needing the herd to gather round a scared little baby she went on the attack! Wow! She’s growing up so fast!

She truly is a 🌟 and, yes, you're right about her amazing teachers.
Fwiw, your comment reminded me of a story I'm following on another channel. First, I know it's not optimal to see any animal in captivity, but since these gorillas are critically endangered, I'm glad to see good zoos with great vet staff, enrichment, etc, but this is about another very unlikely tale of survival. (It's on Larry's Safari)
There's a baby gorilla at the Cleveland Zoo whose name is Kayembe. His first time mum rejected him in the beginning and it was scary for everyone since he was sickly, too.
But then a very elderly gorilla named Freddie took over as his allomother. She was 47 years old and began to spontaneously lactate to feed him!
Of course, the zoo supplemented that with bottles a few times a day, but it was still a miracle to behold.
      ❤🦍😍
Then another surprise occurred. Kayembe's birth mother began to accept him, too, after seeing him with Freddie - perhaps learning? - and, after her original milk had dried up, also began to spontaneously lactate to feed him. The keepers were all astounded. The two females took turns taking care of him, altho Freddie was his preferred mum.
Anyway, Kayembe's going to be two years-old next week and is the healthiest, brightest, most playful little great ape you could imagine - all because of this strange cooperation between troop members.
Lastly, he's even got a new baby half-sister born in July who's healthy. (They share a father, the great silverback Mokolo.)
Here's to our beautiful garden planet's survival as well as its fantastic, courageous denizens. May they be protected.

@@mortalclown3812I also have been thrilled/worried/astonished by Kayembe’s story and there have been times, too, when I have thought of Meisiekind. (I abhor zoos and wildlife parks, but accept that they exist and some are doing important work…..but, animal captivity for human enjoyment makes my stomach turn.)

🫶🐘So many beautiful moments, in this video. 🐘🐘The warthogs didn’t stand a chance with Khanyisa, on patrol. Timi, focused and foraging is so lovely. Pisa healing and recovering well.
    Thank you all 🐘🐘💞

Great to see Meisiekind learning from her HERD on how to chase away the various critters invading her personal space! LOL! Nice to see the family happily foraging. Soon everything will be green. And we're getting ready for the much cooler temps. Sweet and beautiful Timisa💞was being her usual gorgeous self, twirling those branches like a pro. Nice to see Dr. Rogers coming to check on Cutie Pie Pisa! The look on Kumbura's face was priceless as Khanyisa left her side to say hello again to Adine!

I always wonder about their "Silent Communication"? Do the older females tell the younger ones, "Go babysit"? or do the younger ones innately want to be like their moms and aunts? Then there is Fishun. Did he say, "OK, I'm a little handicapped so I'm going to help the girls out and keep Mambo, in line?"

It seemed a bit odd to me today when Adine and the carer approached Kumbura. They seemed somewhat trepidatious about approaching her and I don’t think I have seen that before. Has something recently changed/happened with Kumbura?

Pure escapism on my part, but I wish I could volunteer and live out the rest of my days at HERD. You seem so far away from the cares of this world (Mideast, American politics, war iin Ukraine, etc., etc., etc.} Just a fantasy. Bless you and the work you all do & happy belated birthday!

Dr. Rogers calling Khanyisa “miracle child” sent chills through me. I knew she was in bad shape when brought in, but I didn’t know her health was so precarious as to be on the precipice. How frightened you all must have been.
