Dominant Bull Elephant, Sebakwe Goes on a Nighttime Bender & Returns at Sunrise with a Wild Bull

- As one of our followers said recently, you can have a routine but you never know what will happen in a day to throw that routine out! Nature, or rather the elephants, often have their own plans and in this case it was Sebakwe who was wooed by the lure of a wild bull to roam with, and extra marula fruit to seek out.
Elephant Manager, Tigere explains the event that unfolded, as the team saw Sebakwe heading off with the wild bull into the thick bushes, and were unable to track him to bring him back, as night fell over the wilderness. Fortunately, Tigere woke to find Sebakwe waiting outside the homestead the next morning, where the rest of the herd was, while eating marulas close by with the same wild bull. He must have had quite the adventure or "jol" as we call it in South Africa, meaning a fun time or joyful celebration or excursion, but his herd trumpeted with delight when Sebakwe rejoined them all.
The herd were immensely happy to see him, as were the carers, as it can be very dangerous having an elephant who was hand-reared roaming in a reserve where there are human movements and developments. Sebakwe was orphaned and brought up with humans in Zimbabwe. We don't know much about his history, nor that of many elephants in the original herd that we rescued in 2002 when they were threatened with being killed during land reforms in Zimbabwe.
But we know they were individuals, not yet a family, and orphans, brought up by humans. This can cause problems if they encounter humans in the wild, as they aren't afraid of people in the way that other elephants are - in the way that helps prevent human-elephant conflict.
Tigere needs his own elephant education show. He has a good on screen personality. I think it’s because he is passionate about the elephants.
Watching the elephants return home from their day in the bush I could not but exclaim what glorious creatures they are. Hearing the rumbling and trumpeting of the herd leaves me in awe of these majestic pachyderms! Thank you for your care towards them all!
No matter what, a little wildness remains in Sebakwe. He heard the call and likely does not understand the dangers. We are all thankful for the concern at keeping all of them safe. It is complicated, I'm sure, but, for now, he is safely home. Thank you, Tigere for the devotion to the elephants.

We all need some time, every once in a while.
Can’t get enough of Tigere’s sharing of his knowledge and care for the Jabulani herd but also we love to hear about the feelings of the carers and their experience - sharing how you all were worried about what might happen to him and then of course about how excited the herd was when he came back - the rumbling and trumpeting. Their rumbling touches something deep inside. I know older bulls leave the herd in the wild and live more solitary lives, but this group clearly want his company and leadership. I’ve watched and “liked” every video on this channel and every video with the little ones running several times 😊 Much love to Adene, the carers and all the elephants!

Tigere has explained so well.
Some may rewind, some may not. The fact that there is a long established herd that can re-acclimate orphans to a herd, a family (humans and elles), especially after trauma and abandonment is nothing short of miraculous.
Well, he could go for a ‘jol’ since he’s the dominant bull.😊 I’m glad the wild younger elephant was friendly since they came back together, but can imagine the worries! Thank you, Tigere, for telling the story and for being such a caring human being! 💙

Sebakwe is a naturally sociable dude. He likes meeting new people, going for walks, snacking. He wants to be friendly with the neighbors. Bless him, he doesn't see how terribly dangerous humans can be. He just wants a bit of fun.

@@debrahouston2884 Sure, but who says the wild bulls meeting other elephants isn't fun? Some of them adult bulls live in bull herds... and they really don't need it for protection.
@@Aurinkohirvi You also get lone bulls who prefer not too much company. They organise themselves according to their personal preferences - a bit like humans do. I'm sure some are fun loving and others not so much.

Mr Tigere, I thank you for the clear information about Sebakwe's adventure to explore outside grounds with a wild bull. The thing is he came back where he feels safe. On the other hand a trial run around to see what is out there for fun. But as Mr Tigere says he is hand reared by humans and not afraid of them. This could be dangerous for him. Thank you all for your care and devotion toward the elephants.

Poor Tigere and the other wonderful carers it must sometimes feel like looking after a bunch of unruly babies, toddlers, children and teenagers. I can fully appreciate why they have to be segregated in their stalls at night too. What a great story and interview.

It's not an easy situation. However, Sebakwe was doing what is normal and natural for bull elephants his age. I'm quite proud of him even though he gave everyone a sleepless night of worry. He's a good boy!💖🐘💖
Agreed. What Sebakwe did was totally normal and I often wondered if the elephants ever naturally wandered off and if they would let them go off into the bush. The cows will at least remain together, but bulls are supposed to separate.
I thought I saw on another elephant channel that the female elephants will eventually wander away from the rescue and join the wild herd and start having babies there.
@@latsnojokelee6434 is that the Sheldrike in kenya? I think I spelled it wrong. In this Herd, I think the juvenile females, as they get older in 5-6 years will in fact wander off, IF the young bulls in Herd cannot mate with them. Although they are all on contraceptives, the strong instinct to mate and have the next generation is stronger than any pills.
Here's something Im curious about. I know they are around humans etc., But they do still have instinct. If a wild animal can turn on an instinct, whats to say they cant survive and be wary? I cant wrap my head around the thought that we think we know more about animals and ancestral imprint than they do. If they absolutrly have to move on no doubt in my mind together they could. They will always have their instincts. What to eat what to drink. Their territorial instincts never trully lesson, they just make a choice based on earned trust. Thats just my opinion, but it boggles me time and time again not just elephants either. Take care all
@@k.tinder8905 No they don’t wander off at 5 or 6 or mate at that young age, nor do they just wander off. They are locked into the stockade at that young age and are still dependent on their keepers and at risk from predators lion attacks. When they do leave they do so gradually and by joining ex orphans herds for protection and it’s where they learn from them how to live in the wild and the dangers including human dangers.When they do leave they go into a protected area they are still protected by teams of men on the ground and aerial surveillance and they always have a place to come back to for help and do. They are also living in a different country, in Kenya hunting elephants is illegal unlike South Africa which has just announced permits to allow the hunting of 150 elephants this year , an endangered species, along with 10 critically endangered black rhino. The laws surrounding poaching is also different in Kenya where poachers can now get life in prison if caught.
Tigers gave a very clear explanation of the present and future possibilities. Thank you.
I am happy to see Sebakwe ,after his night out, has returned to his herd unharmed. I remember his behavior with Timisa and maybe he needed that time away to settle down again. You have sixteen elephants in the Jabulani crew.Each one of these rescue orphans has a place in the herd in residence at the jabulani retreat .Big job!! Adine has the right people working at the orphanage what passion they all have!!! I think it is written a shepherd will not rest will go and find a lost member of his flock! think that book is the bible!!! About returning this herd to the wild, I know I couldn’t. What concerns me is that they are not ‘annoyed’ by humans like truly wild ellies & the wrong people is what concerns me the most.
Maybe the younger bulls adapt progressively to not approach ppl. For the girls, I’d fence a vast part of the reserve so they can roam as they wish safely. I know, I’m a worrier, especially regarding the younger girls. 🤷♀️ 🤦♀️ Thanks so much for all you do in a daily basis!! 💖

Interesting with Sebawke. Always wondered about them returning since they are use to humans. I always wondered if they could ever be back out in the wild, however really figured they could not. Loved to watch them coming home for the evening. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for the video explaining how to identify Tokwe; now I can always tell which elephant she is. Fishan too I usually recognize but only when I see his legs. I couldn’t believe how fast Khanyisa walked heading in for her bottle. It must be wonderful to interact with these incredible animals on a daily basis. It is also very nice to enjoy looking at the elephants without having to worry about them getting killed or attacked or injured. I hate the safari videos where they show one animal killing another and no one intervenes. They just video it! I saw one on you tube recently where the group just watched a lost baby elephant (estimated weight 2000 lbs) being killed by some lions! Oh my gosh.

So happy Sebakwe came home safe and sound. It must be in the back of the carer's minds all the time out in the field that one of the herd might wonder off and could get into trouble.
Adine made an important statement. She said that if she was standing in the middle of the elephants' food when the elephants returned, they might see her as competition.
We love these elephants so much, but we can't forget how dangerous human/elephant interactions can be.

Wow Sebakwe has been cutting up lately. Trying to mount little Timi, now running away with the wild bull. I know he use to follow the wild herds sometimes but I thought he just wanted to get next to the females. Now I'm beginning to believe that Sebakwe is Mambo's father. 😆 he gets his cutting up and running away from his father. 😆 💕 🐘 🐘

Very very interesting and more food for thought. We viewers are learning so much. Miss Pinky don’t play when she returns home ready for her milk and goodies. The other cows, Pisa’s group lingering discussing their day out foraging, and spa activities. All returning to their rooms for supper before more basking and nibbles later in the garden. Loved Tokwe’s little reminder to go eat your own food. Every Ellie back home and safe. Sabakwe on his JOL lots of tales to tell. Another wonderful day with HERD.
The beauty of HERD and the orphans there is an existing HERD to integrate the rescues into a family unit. Imagine the difficulties of integrating a rescue orphan for animals that are highly social, integrated and intimate, into a wild herd. Thinking it would be hit and miss.
Great interview with Tigere..I too hope than can go back to the wild someday..we will all miss them but its the best in the long run..
