ABOUT THE GUNS OF NAVARONE:
Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn and David Niven are Allied saboteurs assigned an impossible mission: infiltrate an impregnable Nazi-held island and destroy the two enormous long-range field guns that prevent the rescue of 2,000 trapped British soldiers. Supported by an all-star cast and produced on a grand scale, the film was an enormous success, receiving seven 1961 Academy Award® nominations (including Best Picture) and winning for Best Special Effects.

Will never understand why they gave that German officer a British Sten Gun in the face off with Pappadimos
True, but the Germans used all sorts of captured weapons and vehicles after they had invaded various countries.
Laziness with the armourer dept?
Maybe they had a shortage of MP40s in the armourer's storage, gave the actor a sten hoping the audience wouldn't care too much about detail? All sorts of reasons, or assume it was a captured example. I know the Germans came up with their own Sten gun, but that wasn't until nearly the end of the war.
They could have put the dynamite in the gun breaches, and left before the troops entered. The two wires sitting on the METAL pole would close the circuit without the wheel hitting the wires.
But that would not build the tension of the German attempt to open the doors, the attack on the Greek (US?) DD and the final loading of the guns - would it work? They were still trying to distract the Germans.

They could have just put the dynamite in the breaches and ruined the guns. And left way before the troops even entered the bunker.
That's Hollywood for you. Got to do the more dramatic Rube Goldberg rather than the more simpler practical.
That would be “breeches”, but I get your drift.
Or could have used thermit. Nice, simple effective. It would have fused the elevating gears, burn a hole through the barrel etc.

Beats most American rubbish and actually is not a bad look at the post invasion war in Greece.
@@andrewstackpool4911 It has that merit, but on the other hand it has some unrealistic elements too. For example in real life the Nazis wouldn't have burned the village after evacuating the people, they would have burned it with the people inside. But the most unrealistic element in the plot is that Churchill would have never risked six precious RN warships to rescue 3000 men. The empire had men aplenty, they could recruit from the colonies, and just in Singapore they had ordered the garrison of 85.000 to surrender to a smaller Japanese force. Given the high risk of the operation they could have lost both the men and the ships.
