The Beast (1988)

- In 1981 Afghanistan, a Soviet tank unit viciously attacks a Pashtun village harboring a group of mujahideen fighters. Following the assault, one of the tanks-commanded by ruthless commander Daskal (George Dzundza)-takes a wrong turn through a mountain pass and enters a blind valley. Taj (Steven Bauer) returns to discover the village destroyed, and his father and brother killed-the latter by having been crushed under Daskal's tank. As the new khan following his brother's death, Taj is spurred to seek revenge and leads a band of mujahideen fighters into the valley to pursue Daskal's tank (which they call 'The Beast'), counting on their captured RPG-7 anti-tank weapon to destroy it.
Lost, isolated, and with their radio damaged in the village attack, the tank crew set out to find Kandahar Road and return to Soviet lines. While camping for the night, Afghan communist crewman Samad (Erick Avari) educates the reluctant tank driver, Konstantin Koverchenko (Jason Patric), about the Pashtun people's code of honour, Pashtunwali; particularly nanawatai, which requires that an enemy is to be given sanctuary if he asks.

Yes it really is and also you can only wonder about this done in real life like in the Russia Ukraine conflict that's happening now.
You probably have not seen the Gruesome Vid of the Syrian Tank Driver getting run over by a FSA Tank. It’s very bad.
Americans did this to POWs in the pacific in ww2. Wounded Japanese in a field hospital were deliberately ran over by the tanks. Nothing happens when your the victors
This is the ONLY film I've ever seen that looks like they're using live ammo in the tanks. They used former Russian-made tanks in Israel, shooting water-filled bags at the head of the round, causing not only the gun to fully recoil in battery like a real breech-loader does with live ammo, but they timed it perfect with the ground charges for the distances involved. I know people who are convinced these scenes were only filmed with live ammo, which of course is silly. But still, it sure does LOOK like it, no?
But this are some mixups with other tank parts. The canon is an L7 105mm.

The Russians kept almost all of Afghanistan under control, while there were few people, the border with Pakistan was open, while Pakistan was an enemy of the USSR, they fought not against the Mujahideen but against NATO countries and not only (even China supplied them with weapons) which supplied them with money and weapons, ToroBoro They took us in 6 hours, traded with local residents and respected their morals and religion, and were not afraid to enter villages. They left Afghanistan with flags and equipment proudly and slowly, Afghans respect Russian soldiers. The US army in Afghanistan did not conduct such intense battles as the Soviet army, the soldiers hid behind concrete walls, had many times more people, fought with shepherds in sandals, Russia and no one else supported or supplied them, the border with Pakistan is closed despite the fact that Pakistan An ally of the United States, the United States could not control even 5 percent of Afghanistan. They tried to take ToroBoro for 6 months and were unable to do it, they hid from the residents in concrete shelters, did not communicate with the residents, on the contrary, they were afraid of them, they fled from Afghanistan like rats, leaving everything they could. In the film footage these are not the actions of Soviet soldiers, but the actions of US soldiers. So yes, there is a cemetery for Soviet tanks, but no more than the American one.
Afghans don't respect you
The Soviet army did not lose the war, it came out in full force with all the equipment under an agreement with the United States, while providing the Afghan government with everything they resisted for another 4 years, but the United States failed and fled shamefully, and your Afghan government immediately disappeared at the same time you've been there for 20 years
underrated movie
Just a propaganda of the Cold War. But the visual is really not bad.
Did anyone ever thaught that why Afghanistan is being invaded from thousands of years, we blamed them for terrorism but anyone thaught about their perspective Afghanistan is the place that is being invaded from ages that's why this people are declared terrorist because they are defending themselves, in todays time defender is considered as murderer and the murderer as martyr. This is the real truth in todays world.
This movie really does hit the gritty with how gritty and dehumanizing it can get.
En route, the crew suffer several setbacks and ambushes from Taj's band. Suspecting Samad to be a traitor, Daskal murders him in front of his men; Koverchenko threatens to report Daskal for the illegal killing. At a brief stop, Koverchenko reports that their tank is breaking down; Daskal accuses him of mutiny and orders gunner Kaminski (Don Harvey) and loader Golikov (Stephen Baldwin) to tie him to a rock, and leave him with a grenade behind his head as a booby-trap for the mujahideen. Wild dogs eventually attack Koverchenko, but he is saved when the grenade rolls off the rock and explodes, scaring them off. Taj's band reunite with several vengeful women from the village and find Koverchenko, who pleads for nanawatai. The mujahideen give him food and shelter. Koverchenko befriends Taj after fixing the band's broken RPG-7, and agrees to help him destroy the tank.

Absolutely right , USA also destroyed Afghanistan with the help of Pakistan & also destroyed Vietnam, Iraq
He got a tank, but he lost for a single Afghan unarmed. He gets nothing.
Ну да, ну да! Я видел как ветераны приезжают в Афганистан почтить память товарищей, талибы принимают их как гостей, но в фильме реальная клюква! В конце фильма не хватает атомной бомбы...
А почему они говорят по английски?
This is an American movie, mostly directed towards American audiences. While not realistic, it makes sense for them to be speaking English.
Ну понятно кто снимал эти сказки. Спросите сейчас афганцев , что они думают о шурави и американцах. Я думаю сравнение будет не в пользу Сша.
1 million died in the 10 years the Ussr was there 100k died in the 20 the US was there. The facts speak for themselves people tried to hang onto the planes when the US left.

В гимне Афганистана твёрдо и четко поётся, что «когда они победили британцев, они стали могилой для русских». Так что вас, таких же варваров в Афганистане, какими затем стали американцами, они тоже ненавидят.

I am not sure if the Soviets did it that way but they had their "Search and Destroy" missions. Scavenging through villages and execute men that are in the Mujahideen or just were assumed to be Mujahideen.

@@augusto97aaoc15 And the Sohaet army did not have a goal to defeat or destroy Afghanistan, the United States did, your government stated this. The Russians built houses, hospitals, roads, schools, factories, power plants, the United States built nothing but their bases. Drug production under the USSR fell to a historic low, while under the USA it increased tenfold. As for your comment, don’t fantasize
