    Keeping this on a boat led to moisture getting into the kit and effecting the contents. Amazing that the company that produced the kit is still in business and the contents are still the same. Interesting review.

    Marine stove. Mate
    used to cook and as a heater aswell very nice find the wick might have solidified in the cupping so fuel might not be passing through leave it in soak in parafin over night then try again or try a new wick

      Ive been told its a spirit burner so going to give that a go next, the paraffin did seep through when I held it upside down but no joy. Cheers for watching mate

    Andy - almost forgot - I don't think I would have had the courage to taste the cake/bread rations, seeing how old they were. You are a braver man than I am, for certain.

    That was good fun Andy! I’ve got some old US MREs from the late 1980s I believe - the coffee has done the same in those and they were sealed - I reckon they just deteriorate over time regardless of moisture? I’d have eaten one of the candles though haha! Sounds like your viewers have come up trumps with the stove ID too!! Nice find! Not jealous, no, not one bit, not me!

    • @KentSurvival

      you actually ate one! lol , was it bad? I might do it if I reach 20l subs :p - ill try the stove with meths soon, hopefully find out a bit more info too.

    Waterproof matches..ply box. Last I saw ply box was 80's. Esbit. Esbit stoves had tiny blocks in box in late 80s early 90s. But it was wrapped in celophane, not blister packs. So Im guessing after mid 90s.

    Match box is wood rather than cardboard & the striker is waterproof. If it gets wet you just rub it off then strike your match.

    Great video, Andy! A very interesting survival kit! The Norwegian survival biscuits from Compact A/S was cool! I have a load of their buiscuits from them mede for the Norwegian and Swedish armies. They seem to be very similar to the fruit ones in your kit, with and without raisens depending on what year they were manufatured. Mine were made between 1987 and 1989 and both versions taste great still. I eat them on a regular occasion. I actually ate to biscuits earlier today! :D Hower the ones I have are packaged differently. Mine are packed in green carboard boxes with a inner waterproof foil rapper. Each box xontain 8 individual biscuits in the same shape and size as yours by the looks of it. the biscuits themselfs are wrapped in wax paper containing 2 biscuits in each paper pack. And these 4 packs of 2 are held together by a plastick wrapping inside the foil rapper. They come from the armoured regiment we used to have here in Hässleholm, Sweden were I live and have been perfectly stored.. As I eat the biscuits I reseal and keep the cardboard boxes for display purposes on our local museum were I work in my spare time. Again, great video and keep doing what you are doing! Cheers/Max from Sweden

    Nice find. My concern would be mold and fungus in any rations more than 5 years old that has been exposed to the slightest bit of moisture above 35 degrees. I suppose a splash of vodka would terminate any potential risk of salmonella or boil the food rations in water and a spit of vinegar to kill any surviving bacteria. A dash of hot sauce or wild scallions will make the food rations a bit more easy on the taste buds.

    It’s always interesting to see survival stuff from the past thank you. Making the candles edible seems cruel, making you choose between light and some heat or eating seems a bit unfair but I’m sure they had their reasons. Thank you for not trying to eat the candles, I don’t think I wanted to ever see that.

    Interesting little find. I suspect the 'stove' is missing the chimney, it looks a lot like the old paraffin heat that came with my 40 year old boat, soak the wick for a good few hours and it should be fine

  • @cornishtrekker
    @cornishtrekker 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting video Andy, the stove looks like a greenhouse heater and may of had a top to it sure my grandad had one years ago.

    • @KentSurvival
      @KentSurvival  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thats an interesting thought Mike.. had a few people try to get to the bottom of it.. im going to try meths in it next and see how that goes, thanks

    • @cornishtrekker
      @cornishtrekker 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Think that might be dangerous as the gas from the meths in the storage part of it could explode where as the parafin has low exposion risk. Could be that the wick is just old and not soaking the parafin up anymore.

    • @cornishtrekker
      @cornishtrekker 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a trangia burner for Most of my trips out mainly as it's so compact combined with Bush box type stove have the option to use twigs then too.

  • @boomshanka8743
    @boomshanka8743 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Brilliant, and any excuse to get a new lamp/stove! Looks like an alcohol stove to me, and they are commonly used on boats. It really reminds me of a larger version of the old French medical alcohol stove for sterilizing small medical tools. Try it with some ethanol after you dry the wick out. It should have a snuffer cap with it.

    • @KentSurvival
      @KentSurvival  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks buddy.. Ive left it open in the shed so ill try with alcohol when its ready.. never seen a spirit burner in that style, looked more like a paraffin lantern style.. live and learn

    the survival rations have a shelf life of 20 years plus,
    not to shocked the coffee perished thou,
    small packets like that generally last only a few years.
    Am sure you can sort the wick out on the stove and get it working again,

    Wow, 18th commenter, I'm one of the first! When you opened the kit, I noted right off that the packs of mixes/creamers had moisture problems. I sort of expected you to find some hardtack in there. Still and all, there were till useable items in the kit, so not a total loss. Maybe the heater/stove needs a new wick, or more time to soak (it would be quite dried out, wouldn't it, after all this time? When I was in the US Navy on board a fleet oiler, we often got condensed milk tins that were from WW2, and this was in the mid '60's, it was still good. As always, stay safe.

    Those food bars look like our prepper Coast Guard survival ration. Like a pressed grainy, graham cracker cake powder. It might be 30 years going through your body - or 30 seconds screaming through.

    How's your tummy today lol.
    Re the stove. When you raised the wick mechanism it didn't look like there was any wick showing. I'd definitely try feeding some fresh wick throw. Or get some new.
    Good luck.

      @KentSurvival  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      haha, I was fine.. made of the strong stuff :p there is wick in the extender, I held it upside down until the paraffin worked its way through but ive been informed its actually a spirit burner so going to give that a try next, thanks for watching buddy

    Coghlans matches were made in Australia. That kit must be old, as I don't think any matches are made in Australia now.

    I'm pretty sure that's a chafing dish warmer that's missing the dish, not a stove. Though it could certainly be used as one in an emergency.

    Awesome Amigo !! History lesson included. Different items, cool ! Most would be, extremely helpful sir. Multi purpose utensil, again, very cool. Medical part, scary, but useful ! The Esbit stove, is very sound. Better than most. Fuel tabs, lit quickly. Shame mold in the coffee. Not surprised, but still , A shame. That stove, is A masterpiece sir. Regardless of fuel type !! Great review, and, items included. Peace, John. Thank you for this kit and review sir. Again, Peace.

    I’m wondering if that’s a methylated spirit burner. It looks like a spirit kettle stand/burner from a kettle used for afternoon tea from pre_60s. I have similar in crappy silver plate. Might explain why hidden wick didn’t light with paraffin....try meths. Keep surviving!

    Now that was rather interesting, shame all the contents got wet, but that what heappens when you cary a non water proof kit like that on a boat. I do with the site had the prices of the kits. but otherwise they seem pretty legit. I'm hoping they all come in similar style steel containers for all those other uses.

    One thing for sure now Andy... Fuck eating those candles after 30 years :D
    I can only imagine how bad eating a new tallow candle would be let alone an old one. I like that old stove too and it's really cool how it just happened to fit on top of the tin. Like the other guy said before me it's an alcohol stove by the look of it

    • @KentSurvival

    Wonder what it cost when new, compared to cost today. I tried American compo rations in 1973, which weren't too bad, and British Army rations in 1995; the brit army didn't do vegetarian back then.
