I’m a huge Garbo fan, and have read every biography out there. I’m not trying to be mean, but you don’t understand Garbo. You’re trying to describe her through the lens of those who remain as shallow as the Kardashians. The computer generated narrator voice is also an insult to such a legend. Greta Garbo is like no other actress before or after her.
I understand Greta the way she became ,she knew when to quit acting and and wanted people to remember her as she was ,I can't blame her for escaping away from the lime light ,and hated being hounded by paparazzi no wounder she got frustrated and annoyed when all she wanted to do was be left alone, some famous people love the lime light and can't live without it ,Greta was the opposite, her privacy was her business and she tried making it known by ignoring paparazzi and people wanting to interview her, she was right ,she is a legend from the silver screen and an icon from her movies thats the way she wanted to be remembered ,r,I,p,Greta ,god bless you amen💖💖💖💖🌹😘
Garbo was to marry John Gilbert on 2 separate occasions and pulled out both times. Probably because of John Gilbert's alcoholism which she realized early on she could not live with on a daily basis. There are several accounts of her other male relationships most notably with Leopold Stokowski which seemed to last the longest. She had many male and female friends natural for any woman. One female friendship was with Mercedes de Acosta who hounded more female Stars (even Marlene Dietrich avoided de Acosta) that she became friends with over time. It is from this short friendship the gay legend comes from today. Garbo actually wrote Mercedes de Acosta off after her involvement in the script writing of 2 Garbo MGM films. The relationship permanently ended with the publication of de Acosta's biography, "Here Lies the Heart" published many years later. Garbo's only love affair was most likely with John Gilbert as she came the closest to a marriage with him than any other person in her long life. She realized in the end that no man wanted to be known as "Mr. Garbo" and therefore never married. Aristotle Onassis and Gayelord Hauser were close friends as were many people around the World (and especially in Sweden) with the ability to provide Garbo the privacy she demanded on her visits with them.
What an elegant contrast to the publicity seeking female stars of today who do almost anything to be noticed. Garbo has always been my favorite. So very, very beautiful.
I did enjoy and the range of photographs was very well researched but there were some errors in the information, one in particular saying she never auditioned for another film after she retired in 1941. She did, and the screen tests still exist. 1949. The Duchess de Langais. Funding fell through and it was never made.
Hi Vintage Hollywood Archive, Thankyou so much for this indepth, intriguing & enigmatic look at one of the most Stunning Golden Years of Hollywood Stars 🌟 Greta Garbo was certainly an amazing actress, who had a lot of influence over Film Companies, Director's & Producer's. She was able to have the final say in who she co starred with, & negotiated huge salaries in the films in which she starred. She never married, & on the advice of a friend invested her considerable wealth in Real Estate & Art. She had the most beautiful blue eye's 💙, which became one of her stand out features. Really enjoyed this Wonderful Bio, on one of Hollywood's, most mysterious film stars. Love Love from Australia 🇦🇺 🇦🇺📽🎬🧡🧡💖💖🌟🌟💜💜❤❤❤🌻🌻⚘⚘⚘⚘💋💋
haha. "Made the best of what she had?" She was the greatest star of her time. And legendary even now. She is seen of the most charemetic moviestars together with Marilyn Monroe. When she was on, you could not look at anybody else. She stopped at 36, but was haunted for the rest of her life. She was regarded as one of the great beauties ever. This is not just a movie actress of way back when. This is an icon.
Makes me laugh the way you said “a little before my time.” Garbo was before ALL our times but many of us still knew about her. There’s something called history and reading books and watching old films that shouldn’t stop you learning about history. I hate it when people say “that was before my time.” World War 1 and 2 were well before my time and yet I still know about them. Same with the Middle Ages!
Stiller was actually assigned to direct The Temptress, Garbo's second MGM film. But he was replaced by Fred Niblo when Stiller did not get along with his employers.
Que hermosa💝💝 , una Belleza practicamente natural , en esa epoca ser Rubia , alta y de ojos azules era el ideal de Belleza ,Ahora existe la diversidad y eso es bueno .
11:38 "She got a deal to start her own company, Canyon prods." I assume you meant Canyon productions? You don't even know what you are saying. You're just reading words on a page.
The worst script ever in this field - created by English-2nd-language computers? Speak with at-least-decent grammar! Garbo did a late '40s screen test, but producers couldn't get financial backing. That was that.
Garbo was gay. In those days it was forbidden to be gay in Hollywood. Must have been a very lonesome life for her. I read she had a love affair with another woman for many years. So just say it: Garbo was gay. That's all.
I have read that her films were more popular in Europe than in America. When America entered the war after Pearl Harbor, the demands for the kind of films she made, dropped entirely. Now audiences wanted patriotic pictures and she didn´t quite fit the bill. also, her last film "Two faced woman" was a flop making MGM reconsider her liability. The earnings her films had made in europe before the war, dropped to zero after 1940, so she more or less got sacked from the studio. After the war, she was approached by some italiean film makers. It resulted in a screen test but she made too many demands that caused the said film makers to back out. One thing this short "archieve" fail to mention, is that Garbo indeed was a talkative person, so much so, that the studio created the image of her wanting to be alone. What she actually said on that matter, was she wanted to be left alone, from hounding reporters, the press, etc. And she was far from living a life of a recluse. in fact she traveled a great deal, even revisiting her native sweden over the course of decades. One note on the film "Queen Christina". It was Greta that suggested a film being made on swedish queen that chose to convert to the catholic faith, giving up her throne in the progress. It seems odd then, that the film was totally inaccurate considering her having learned about her countryman in history class in her childhood.
Even I know more juicy insider personal life story than was provided here. Like writing her own studio work agreement, being bi, living in the complex with the widow of her former manager and lover, and going to great pains to avoid her in the building. Endlessly walking the streets of New York as a virtual ghost...
What this strange voice is saying, lol. Garbo had the most beautiful teeth all her life. She never had they straightened. Not that to do that at the times was easy, it was very unusual and difficult.
Dude, this narration is really hard to listen to. Change the tone and cadence of your speech sometimes. Pause after each sentence. And stop saying aayyy instead of ahhh for the word 'a'. Stop saying thee instead of the. I can't tell if this is just a bad computer generated voice or just bad narration.
I Cher seme filing to pictures my only 6 was fo school to junior college 🎓 and someone for being rewalion I in dit I admirer her if I don't now you is I do I keep it to myself IWANT TO BE ALONE
Many famous actors like Bette Davis all said Greta was their idol. They all admired her. If you watch old chat shows from the 1970s you can see many actresses refer to Garbo. Garbo has been lost from the public discourse now. No one mentions her anymore. She is only known to the cognoscenti of cinema and fashion and queerness. People are dumb now and they’ve also been dumbed right down in an age where pornography and the Kardashian-Jenners rule. Cheapness rules now. Noise rules. Nudity rules. Sleeping around and talking about it publically rules. But there was a time when the screen flickered silently with that beautiful black and white luminescence and Greta ruled the consciousness of what female transcendence was all about. Ironically, that femininity was an androgynous one in Greta’s case. Which is why she remains such a timeless and arcane figure. In a few years time no one will remember or even speak about the prostitutes we refer to as Kim, Khloe, Kourtney, Kylie, Kendall Kardashian-Jenners, but Greta will live on.
Every one classed her as beautiful but she was not really .she was ordenary its the make up that made her look like any other star of that time.the same with Marlien and others of her time in the spotlight.

Total nonsense. As I stated in reply to a post below, the book *Star Acting: Gish, Gargo, Davis* details her splendid control over minutest details, and the great effect of her frequent underplaying. She was superb.
She truly was a beauty those are great photos
Maybe she stayed out of trouble and wanted her privacy.

We share same birthday…9/18
What matters, not the time of depression, rather, by the test of time. She and her moves are timeless.
Her acting style was more natural and modern and stands the test of time due to that.

Interesting topic, but the voice has a weird cadence and it makes it irritating to listen to.
totally agree
I wish she made at least 1 color film
🤔 So simply can not understand why done of her old 🎥 movies have not been colourzise, as other popular films have ?...

12:16 That's part of the screen test.
She DID NOT SAY, I want to be alone.
She Said, I want to be LEFT alone.
Huge difference.
I believe her character in Grand Hotel did say "I want to be alone," even if she never said it offscreen.
The character said it, but the public translated it as the person saying it.

In an interview on You Tube, Melina Mercouri said Garbo had grey eyes.
@@Steve-km3ntshe had blue grey eyes and longest real eyelashes also Kim Kardashian has naturally longest eyelashes
It would be nice if the pictures matched the narrative instead of random photos.
Great is one of the very few greatest.
A little before my time but obviously made the best of what she had. Always good to hear other perspectives of these actresses. Thanks Brenton 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

Alas, Garbo never made a color film. Imagine CAMILLE in technicolor! Stunning.
Stiller was actually assigned to direct The Temptress, Garbo's second MGM film. But he was replaced by Fred Niblo when Stiller did not get along with his employers.
I never see her smiling or laughing in the movies.
Then watch Ninotchka
Garbo retired at the peak of her beauty, which is all for the better. Seeing her age on the screen would be appalling.
Ninotchka is fabulous.
😂😅 So is Queen Christina 1933..
So is Camille. Camille to me is what I think of as a Garbo film.
This is one of the worst story readings I've ever heard.
