The Greatest Actress , the meaning of the word Icon and beauty. There will never be another.. Forget Hepburn, Davis, all the rest... Garbo was the Unattainable. A Nordic Queen of Film. May You Rest In Peace Greta,
Wonderful surprise coming across this fantasic documentary of the luminously radiant and brilliantly talented Greta Garbo. Their has been no actress before or after that could remotely come close to her magnificent presence on film. An enduring legend never to be repeated again. BRAVO G A R B O ! !
Now this was the woman to look up to, not Marilyn or any of today's celebrities. She was an icon, true class and never let the system change or manipulate her.
People on the Upper East Side of Manhattan (I moved there in the late '70s) enjoyed spotting her walking (and most did NOT bother her). One guy did her hair at Bergdorf's and commented she looked familiar, and she said (if I can believe him) simply, "I used to be in pictures," or something to that effect. One good thing about NY is that it could be fairly easy to be left alone, I found. I always seem to enjoy reading about her and watching her. Thank you for this! Uprated.
Greta's appeal was spiritual and intellectual rather than physical. She acted with her eyes and something luminous came through. She epitomises the dream like quality of film. Greta was a true film actress. The medium was new and the "close up" was what needed to be understood and Greta was all about close ups. In theatre there is no close up. To understand why Garbo became what she did, we need to understand close ups and the zooming in of detail. The close up stops everything in its tracks and is infantile in many ways. The world becomes smaller for a moment and our eyes fence off everything else except the Garbo face, the wide devouring mouth, those all-knowing, saucer-like eyes. Like a child who only has eyes for its mother's breast when suckling, the silent film close up does the same thing. Without any other sounds to distract the child from wanting to be fed, it mesmerises the "suckler": the viewer. The close-up nourishes. The close-up overpowers. Garbo's universal appeal is sexual and sensual at the same time because of this primordial and animal manoeuvre of "close up." In that way, Garbo became world mother, lover, and the ultimate female deity of American and then world cinema - and her androgyne, pagan and strange flickering images luminously play over and over at the pagan temple of Hollywood. Garbo is both world mother and lover simultaneously.
I am a loner but I can also deal with someone and have a family and a husband. :) All those things you mentioned won't never compensate on the absense of family. :)
@@evanatbri-s13 well You got family ,husband ,but sometimes I am sure you like to be just alone not lonely thats different thing I got a partner but I miss my Mum who passed away in 2020
I wasn't a loner, then I had a house 🔥 fire! I lost my cats & dogs all (pets) died.😓 & lost all my books artwork. & Business supplies. Now almost homeless.
I do understand what you mean. Garbo captivated and fascinated men and women equaly. She was such a seductive person without any effort, absolutely mesmerizing. I am a woman as well and feel something else about her too. She was like a magnet! Her androgynous nature was very enticing.
I feel the same kind of loneliness that Garbo felt. I live alone with my dog in a big house. I'm single and not dating. Why? Bad experiences have scared me away from the dating scene. The last guy was dishonest about his marital status. He told me he was single. The truth is he was married. He defrauded me. I will never trust other people again. Humans are deceptive. They will cheat, lie, and steal to benefit themselves.
LaoSoftware You met an ass. Don't let that discourage you. If you met the right one you would find that going through 100 assholes was worth it. Life is short, dying alone is truly sad. Give life/love a chance.
At 27, i dont date and find it's such a huge drain. Even after being with someone for 7 years i realised im happier on my own. I think maybe that just comes with being an introvert.
Ive fallen into a pattern of testing any romantic advances I have after a horrible 4 year relationship damaged by self-esteem where I tried to be perfect. Be really annoying, send unflattering photos if they ask for photos , tell them i'm obese(im not) therefore why are they bothering. Probably not the best way to get a date!
Not all men are bad. Don’t throw the whole bunch of apples away because of a few bad ones. By not dating, you may never feel hurt again but you’ll never feel loved again either. It can be worth the risk.
Just read up on her biography and oh my God, she was the coolest person EVER! Beautiful, witty, confident and didn't give a fuck about fame or celebrity status - awesome!!!
Today marks the beginning of mu quest to know Greta Garbo! I am reading a thick book that is written about her, and am absolutely mesmerized ! I believe, from what I have read so far...that Greta Garbo was born to ACT...just As Margo Fonteyn was born to DANCE! Two real examples of real artistic, born talent. So far I am delighted! Thank you You Tube for all you have done to bring Greta here today!
How can Garbo be summed up in a word? What one word is broad enough, deep enough or majestic enough to encompass her great talent? I cannot sum her up in 25 words or less either but what I can do is tell you that, for me, Greta Garbo was the finest actress of her day and any day thereafter as well. She didn't act...she inhabited a role. She was that person. You could almost feel the character's blood coursing through her veins. Watch her...no, feel her in "Camille" That's all I need say!
In the end she lived the life she wanted. She had a small collection of close friends, she had nieces and nephews who visited her, and she was very wealthy. Many, many people live alone who don't have have anywhere near that.
She was so mysteriously mighty and left the world to make researches on her. It's sad she took to grave all her secrets without letting the world know anything...
Her times and friendships with Mimi and others at the film school were the best times of her life and she knew she could never relive them. And to not have these people close by to share in her success was probably very bittersweet.
Many of the movie stars at the time said she was a recluse but that's just because she didn't want to hang out with them. I doubt that woman was really alone. She had so many love affairs with other women but she never felt comfortable disclosing that.
Garbo would find it hard to watch any doco about her, but this would perhaps come closest to one that did not offend her. Because it shares her own strengths: sincerity; authenticity and sensitivity, those being the qualities of all those who discuss her here. Nobody dares to explain what made her such a compelling screen presence because its impossible to define.
It's about expanding your personal sensibility, though. We're so used to so-called 'realism' and special effects in movies that when it comes to contemplating the human being we have forgotten how to dream in my opinion.
"If green is your favorite color it may mean you are eager to please and help others. ... If your favorite color is pink it may mean you are a soft, gentle, innocent person though you have a tendency to flirt and play around. You are sweet and loving." - whyville
Very short Documentary. 😟. Just because a person want to be alone, don't make them weird, a recluse. We go through things. Just because you saw nothing people assume one is alone. How many don't take some time for themselves. That saying you can be alone and not lonely is true. I value my privacy, therefore I respect others. That what some don't know they feel the need to guess, make up things. Some learn early to not depend on others, do as much as you can for yourself. Yet when you need help ask for it. You can have visitors without the whole world knowing. She lived her life the way she wanted to. I'm sure if she wanted company. All she had to do was ask. I👏👏👏her. It's your life, live it. You get a certain age, maybe you just want some quiet time. Do we have know everything. Nothing wrong with being a mystery. 👍✌💯💜🧘♀️🌻🌷🦋🌠🙏. Gratitude, Love, respect and positivity always. Even Louis B Mayer was afraid of her in his own way. Lol. She even intimidated the big boss! He never knew how to relate to her. But he did respect her.
Yes, I heard that story in the late '70s in Manhattan & it was a friend of the hairdresser, it seemed authentic & had "that ring of truth." We had a chuckle over it, & also felt affection for the lady who was so dignified & also kept a bit of wry sense of humor in a very quiet way. Yes, she may have been choosy about her English. I knew Henry Alter, of the "Hollywood Kraut Crowd" & he was a "typical immigrant" in that he thought so highly of English & the USA he strove to speak accurately!
These people talking about her don't know their asses from a hole in the ground. Greta wanted her privacy, period. I respect her and that too. To hell with the intruders.
That sounds like something Garbo would have said. But she probably would have used the word 'films' instead of pictures. She used to call the LA area where she worked (Culver City) the film city when she wrote letters back home. Cool story you told. Very believable.
Is not the Southbank show documentary. The 'A Lone Star' one is narrated by Lauren Bacall. This is great, though as I've only seen this documentary once.
I love it that there are no interviews with her. That's what sustained the mystery. Interesting that the most famous star in the world ever has no interviews on her!!!! It says something about human nature. The stars of today can't even have a coffee without photographing it for instagram. Yet Greta created this star "Garbo" without any instagram, any interviews or any ongoing press. That's true artistry.
Great was a simply amazing beautiful person. That everyone wanted her & wanted to be her. I can't imagine the pressure of all the people. I would go crazy!!
Please...someone who is a great Garbo fan....I have lost something I had found that is very, very sad, but this shows Greta Garbo walking into the hospital with the help of two persons and a cane that she seems to be using. She is wearing slacks, and I think I read that she died about five days after this shot of her was taken. Where is this? I've lost it, and would very much like to have it as a part of my collection. Anyone know where I saw this?
I sympathize. I've got a slew of embarrassing videos up on two channels here and Dailymotion about some personal woes of that nature -- I'm in the process of putting many of them on private setting, however. 70% of people will steal, for example, given the opportunity & the probability they can get away with it -- I learned this from organizational behavior studies in grad school back in the '80s. That's most everyone, statistically. I really feel for you. You may never get over it.

Why do these former movie star queens turn into strange old women? From what I read and heard Miss Garbo spent her final years wandering the streets of Manhattan in her trench coat and huge dark glasses. People say she was often spotted running with a newspaper up to her face as she was fleeing from some imaginary person who she felt was watching or following her. That is sad because few if any people had the time or inclination to watch or follow an old lady who had not been in a film for 50 years. Perhaps she was having flashbacks to her days as movie star when she was constantly being hounded by reporters and fans. Or maybe she was so narcissistic in her old age that she really did think that fans were still following her.
