Update: I had to clean it again a year later (about 7 mo the ago). I assume preventative measures taken such as not leaving lid open after washes and running self clean every couple of weeks minimized the build up because cleaning It the second time was not as bad as the first (less build up). I also am on well water and it’s a little hard so I don’t know if that impacts it any. Samsung sent a tech for the first repair/cleaning. I did not want to wait and or deal with them agains so I watched what the tech did and followed the same process when I did it. It’s not easy but doable if you are comfortable with dismantling and assembling appliances. Not and ideal solution. I’m just biding my time until the machine dies, we move or my wife demands we purchase a new one, but I won’t purchase another Samsung washing machine again.

I hear you on that. I made the unfortunate mistake of purchasing an entire Samsung appliance suite. I figured, they make good phones, right? HUGE MISTAKE! I can’t wait until I can afford to replace all this garbage. I get this crap all the time in my washer as well. It’s mold and mildew. The problem is that once it dislodges, it doesn’t drain out. Clean cycles seem to make it worse. I have to remove the soap drawer and scrub it out all the time as well. Never had issues like this with my $80 second-hand washers.

Is it even worth having a tech come out to clean the washer? Are they going to come out every 6 mos. to clean it? We are handy but taking apart a washer is not something we want to attempt. I am thinking it's better to just replace the pos! We had one of their dryers too (suite purchase). The dryer was replaced a few years ago. When you twist the drum when it is empty, you can hear water swishing around the bottom. Cleaning this once is only going to be a temporary fix I feel. I am so annoyed with Samsung products and offering $36 for a refund is a joke.

Neil, did you take the stainless steel drum out to clean it, or did you just wash the inside? If you took the stainless steel drum out, did you have to use a 38mm socket to remove the nut under the pulsator? That's what I'm told has to be done, but I haven't done it before and would like to know it's what has to be done. The Service Manual says it can be done with a 38mm socket with a clockwise turn to remove and a counter-clockwise turn to set it back tight (opposite of the normal way of removing a nut from a bolt).

John Taylor I did take out the steel drum and cleaned the outside and bottom as that is where most of the residue deposited. I should have done a video of me doing that but I don’t recall how I did it. If I have to do it again I’ll provide details on how I dismantled it to get the drum out.

Same issue and how freaking frustrating. Definitely a design flaw that Samsung should acknowledge and make good on. Mine appears as large flakey debris and potentially mold. Thank you for sharing this information. It helps with trying to address the problem.

The problem was just the surface. Eventually tech had to come and service. Diagnosis was that we had built up gunk on outside of drum lining. The tech removed the drum and cleansed it off. He recommended running he clean cycle every 1-2 weeks. Haven’t had any issues months later.

    1) The Dirt was under the cap as Neil indicated. Recommend using an old toothbrush to get into the crooks and crevices to more thoroughly remove the slime (whatever it is). Be careful when removing the cap as the plastic retaining tabs can easily break. (Ask me how I know.)
    2) Following up with a the Samsung recommended 'self-clean cycle' with bleach (1 cup/240 milliliters), two times.
    3) Check water 1/2 way through 1st & 2nd bleach wash. Definite brownish, yellow water with moderately heavy, particulate matter suspended in the water. Bleach was not the complete solution.
    4) Next used Citric Acid (200 gram/1 cup) on 'self-clean cycle' , two times. After 1st load with citric acid, definite reduction in particulate matter at bottom of washing machine.

Thank You SOOO Much!!! Samsung truly has a design flaw in this particular model. What I found under that cap was horrendously horrifying. I had been looking for a magic filter or something else that would account for the muddy residue in the drum, but never found anything. I appreciate the saving of $150.00 for a service call.

Unfortunately, when you clean below that cap, you are just scratching the tip of the iceberg. If you pull off the agitator, you'll see that the top is stainless steel, and the bottom is plastic. Looking through the plastic, you can see dirt caked all around in the narrow space between the stainless and plastic. I'm going to try to soak the agitator in hot water with dawn. Hopefully it will break up and I can use a jet nozzle on the garden hose to spray in the holes on the plastic. Once you have the agitator clean, you still need to remove your drain hose and clean out the bottom of the tub.

I have the same issue (3 months I've been in the house) and your video is the 1st thing i could find, with same machine and issue. I thought previous owners were dirt biking and washing their muddy and dirt clothes/etc. and dirt just keeps appearing after every wash. I've tried a bunch of self cleaning cycles with and without the tabs. I will check this tonight and fingers crossed this is the culprit. Thank you!

I have the same issue with an extreme amount of brown debris in the water. I have a different Samsung model, WA40J3000AW/A2, serial # begins with 0DLC. The machine was purchased by the previous owners of this house. I found out that Samsung has recalled this particular machine in November 2016 because of excessive vibrations during spinning resulting in the top detaching. Of all the washers I've owned, the vibrations with this one, even with small loads, is more than average. I applied for a rebate on the Samsung site and will buy a different brand.

It's not going to help at all. The agitator and tub needs to come out . Both will have to be cleaned or replaced. Mine is still under warranty. Samsung came out and replaced both due to it being less time consuming then cleaning them both. The tub and agitator were pretty nasty. The washer is only two years old. And yes we used the self clean regularly. The Samsung rep informed us to add Affresh to the clean cycle.

I'm waiting to hear from a few guys who said they cleaned the drum. I think (according to the Service Manual) that you need a 38mm socket to remove the nut under the pulsator. Once removed, the stainless steel drum can be lifted out, but, as I say, I haven't heard from anyone who has done this work. BTW, the nut comes off with a clockwise turn, not a counter-clockwise turn (opposite of the normal way a nut is removed from a bolt). To spin the nut back on once the drum has been cleaned you would then have to turn it counter-clockwise. Weird but that's what the Service Manual says.

The only difference with the Samsung is you don’t have to remove the big nut securing agitator instead there are 5 10mm nuts that have to be removed. But I had mold on the underside of pulsator cover (silver disc at the bottom of drum), on the outside of silver drum and on the bottom of the plastic drum that silver drum rests in.
