Today, I’m diving into my plans for an old laptop I’m repurposing for my home lab setup. I’ll talk about why it’s useful to keep an older laptop around for testing, troubleshooting, and diagnosing server issues, especially if you’re working with self-hosted services. Plus, I’ll give an update on my upcoming move and how this setup will fit into my new space.

My first time setting up Plex Media Server was on an old laptop. I've been a Plex fan ever since.
What do you think of the risk of fire I mean using an old laptop can generate a fire if used 24/7 connected and using power constantly along with the battery connected that would be playing the role of cheap ups ....
Just a failure in the battery or in the sensor that is in responsible of charging it (detecting that it should charge the battery when it really shouldn't) and it is enough to produce a fire....
Wouldn't it be better to use a mini computer like intelnuc or a dell optiplex?
You can find several units for 100/150€ and with a i7 6700 or even 7th or 8th with 8GB/16GB of RAM on ebay or similar sites.
Good question. For me, this will just be a grab when needed laptop for testing or trouble shooting so it wont be on 24/7. If I did want to make this a server then I would remove the battery and run it off of Power.
You are correct, desktops will make for a better server and that's what I currently have running Proxmox but for this case, it was a matter of. "I have a laptop laying around, rather than chucking it out, here's some usecases for it."
Would be nice to look at which Linux distros. What would the the lightest combinations with docker, casa os, or other.
I use a 10 years old with casa os 24h. It works well and does not use a lot of energy.
Nice, that's a great usecase
10 y’ers old laptop homeserver proxmox
This is a fun idea
