I practiced thumping on my guitar for a year and was okay. Then I started practicing on my bass and I got soooo much better. Using a bass is key for thumping because it builds big finger muscle

Literally the only reason I ever learned anything on guitar.
You can build a callous or put gorilla glue on top of your weenie thumb now your thumb is indestructible. I am a bassist who learned this technique and didnt want to stop practicing. Great video btw!

Just a side note, it takes a tremendous amount of fuckery to do any severe damage with a truss rod adjustment. Watch some tutorials, believe in yourself, use your head, it'll be fine. Of course take it to a pro if you're not comfortable but don't shy away from it at the same time.
