@@Memu_ When we first start making music we keep it simple and work with what we have. After a while we overcomplicate things and then we go back to how we started (but with experience under our belts).
Very true. One of the best songs I’ve written is solely comprised of the first three chords I learned. Imposing a smaller framework forces you to come up with innovative ways of playing, much like painting on a tiny canvas
That little preview of "less is more" is really there to remind you how good Judy actually is when it comes to music. I really really wouldn't mind listening to his own music. I want more original Uncle Judy music
This is such amazing advice. I had to write down the bit about writing what feels natural and just powering through writers block. I’m not even primarily a musician, but this applies to me so much as an architectural designer. Thank you daddy!
Amazing advice all of it. The part about keeping your body healthy which will keep your mind healthy which is necessary for writing is SO fucking important. If I eat gluten I get anxious and brainfogged and my writing ability goes out the window. SAME THING starts to happen if I jerk off too much. Real shit.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who will have a sudden inspirational riff pop up into my head, so then I pull out my phone and sing the riff or drum beat into it. There's so many embarrassing audio logs on my phone of me going "Okay potential song number 5, opening riff can be like wickedy waaahhh deedly deedly deeeeedly-boowwww takata-takata-takata--takata-TAHT' and then like repeat from there."
Great video, these are lessons I’ve been learning as I get more into songwriting and the biggest one for me was definitely the genre thing. Whenever a band I like transcends the genre barrier I know it’s because they’ve gotten to the stage where they realise genres are too restrictive
I sequence everything through my MPC, but I record the bass DI in the MPC and route it too a Bass amp. The drums come from a Roland TD17 module and I run them through a cheap Crate amp. Any synths, samples, RX5 drum machine, and vocals go through my PA. It sounds like jamming with angry robots. I still record riffs with a battery powered Zoom R4, but it always goes back to the MPC. Point is, I mostly have a workflow and have to be pretty intentional about it. I have flexibility, but as you mentioned before, minimizing your setup definitely helps. I sound like Nailbomb, Nine Inch Nails, and Nails.
I dont' know, i think its better defining the genre because you could end sounding like Sleep Token (they din't even know what they want to be) and those guys are borring.
these videos some would say are so bad they are great.. im just here for the episode like layers to this crazy shit our boy uncle judy be cookin up.. this guy is somethin...
disagree w the midi autotune shit man,, cuz sure it has no soul,, but the clunky ness gives it a unique vibe. its like,, n64 music. alot of old uk garage uses the shittiest midi accoustic guitar but it has a unique ass sound thats almost iconic. also hyperpop is fire and it has crazy autotune
Mental clarity my weakness rn i am the most depressed i have ever been.by writting sessions often end with drinking crying and self harm cause i am forcing myself to feel everything.
4:11 Unfortunately I think the jokes about bass players have genuinely convinced every TH-cam metal musician to use the Nik Nocturnal Bass plugin 💀💀 I literally seen this metal music channel go from using an actual bass to using Nocturnal bass about a month ago lmao 🤦
i get why people use it. It's very hard to get a good sounding bass, let alone owning one that you can make it sound good. I used a shitty plugin before, because that's what was available for me. I've got a real bass (when it's not in my bandmates home for songwriting), so i will probably only use my real bass for writing and recoding.
Would have been cool to not write off every millennial like that, was on board and subbed until then. Interesting since you’re pretty into metal, attributed mostly to generation x, which pre dates pop punk and is far more done to death
I disagree with the whole you can’t write a song or you won’t write a song when you’re hungover…I come up with my best music ideas when I’m dope sick..it sucks and it’s hard and it’s painful but that’s where an artist needs to be in order to compose music that comes from authentic struggle and pain. Or at least being in a hungover state while writing music can be inspiring because you’re feeling actual hurt and pain and agony…apparently that’s exactly how Dimebag came up with most of, if not all of his riffs and solos, while he was hungover and feeling like dog shit. He even stated that in a few interviews and other members of pantera said he always came up with the best riffs while he was miserably hung over hell Phil even mentions it in the lyrics of Hard lines and sunken cheeks off Far beyond driven: “You know it’s bad some may say that a hangover as inspiration, Like a Junkie I hurt for it” he even claimed that he wrote that line about Dimebag and how he always said he wrote his absolute best guitar parts while he was hungover and while he never said exactly why he always did that, I truly think it’s because being in a miserable shitty state allows an artist to channel that pain and negative feelings and allows them to reflect it into their work it’s easier said then done and you only have a limited time window to write while in that shitty state before you’re not able to stand or move but if you fight through the pain and suffering for just a bit, I assure you, you will come up with some really great relatable stuff because it’s coming from a place of discomfort and devastation and people will hear that and relate to that. It’s hard and it sucks but that’s how you write stuff that people can relate to.. do you think all the great blues players/singers wrote their best songs while they were comfortable and having a nice happy perfect time of their lives? Lol hell no they wrote that shit while they were feeling broken and hurt betrayed and in pain. There is nothing worse then being Comfortable as an artist if your comfortable you will start writing shit that sounds like Taylor swift lmao
Putting pain and suffering on a pedestal as the best, most effective and most authentic way to make art is very unhealthy. It's definitely a good thing to be able to channel negativity into art as an outlet, but don't make the negativiity nessesary for your art. Like I am glad Sarah Shook tool control of her alcoholism for example. I'm glad she came out on the other side and no longer has "drink myslef to death" as a core part of her creative process.
UncleJudy is fantastic at giving you a great message, hidden under a 50 foot layer of frustration, self hatred, and snark. 10/10 would recommend!
This hits home because his message applies to life in general, not just music.
I wish i was that tv

Dude...
Omg yes :3
He may be crazy but he is right.
I think all of us musicians are crazy to a degree lmao
"It might seem crazy what I’m ‘bout to say"
The switch to camera mic increased the unhinged vibes tenfold, unclejudy coming in hot with the facts
It's funny how sometimes we come full circle with a lot of these things. Back to how we did things when we first started.
I don't really get this to be honest.

I don’t think there’s any video I’ve ever needed to see in my life more than this one
One of the best youtubers of all time
City Skylines playthrough when

uncle judy never misses, 11 minutes and 49 seconds of pure unapologetic facts
Love ur videos. Ur rants get me hyped up.
Thanksgiving got weird when unc stood up from the table and started screaming about the melodic minor scale.
Perfection in art isn’t how just and in tune everything is, it’s about how you execute your vision onto the canvas.
Straight to the point, no bullshit! I love it!
I’m with you on everything you just said, subscribed
Judy more clincially insane than last time, figuring out the answers to the songwriting paradigm 😭

This literally just means you’re making art IN SPITE of the problem not BECAUSE of the problem
This could've been a couple sentences long and you still would've gotten your point across
Are you going to share brocicle? I need my fix bro.
