- I can't believe all the sounds I was missing until I set my AirPods Pro 2 up as hearing aids. In this short video, I walk through the setup and then best of all, give you my feedback on whether the AirPods improved my hearing or not.

Rich, Thank you so much for walking me through the test. I’m 62 and Retired from Law Enforcement (28 long, arduous years). I had a lot of Guns going off around me, including my own but I am surprised it is not as bad as I thought. I completely agree with one of your other viewers, “my hearing is good, my listening isn’t so good.” Such a great comment… I’m Listening to you from Tulsa, Oklahoma and I can actually Hear you just Fine… Take care…
I’m mostly death in my left ear, mild tearing loss in my right ear. AirPod Pro twos with the hearing aid function are awesome. Makes everybody’s voice clear previously sounded muffled .Thank you for your review.!
As I am almost completely deaf in my left ear...I was wondering if each of the pods can be set the same for right ear use only. Effectively doubling the ability for continuous use.
Amazing. Thanks for sharing, and in your usual clear, but streamlined way. I like that you present information succinctly, covering the necessary points without dragging it out.
I appreciate that! I really try to make my videos easy to follow.
AMEN AMEN!!!
This is my first introduction to you. I dont know what you discuss, but just because this video was so clear and succinct I’ve subscribed! Thank you!👍
Really appreciate this, Rich. As I live in Canada I just found out that this hearing feature of AirPods pro 2 sadly does not work. I learned this after eagerly buying a set from Costco and attempting to use the hearing health feature. This is just a head's up if any Canadians are watching this. Hopefully it will work in the future.
I have moderate hearing loss in both ears but the left is especially poor. I bought the AirPods a few months ago and have been enjoying the noise cancelation and was really looking forward to the hearing aid feature. It has been A+ for me. I can actually hear my wife’s mumbles (I may not listen to them!) I can clearly hear the crickets in the backyard now (a favorite sound of mine). I could NOT hear them in my left ear, but with the AirPods I can hear them clearly with both ears. The birds in my backyard are louder…and more! I have been wearing them in public without a single comment, like you said they think I’m listening to to music!
Hint from husband here. I have found with the airpods in you can still ignore the wife but only until she reaches the boiling point. It's best at this point to say something like, sorry honey, I was listening to some music. What did you say?
I wear Costco hearing aids for moderate hearing loss. Recently I had a charging issue with my hearing aids so I decided to give my AirPods Pro 2 a try as a hearing aid substitute/backup. At first I was happy to have good hearing back. Soon I could see the advantages of real hearing aids. Battery life on the AirPods was very short compared to the 12-14 hours I was used to. Then my AirPods tended to fall out with normal jaw movement from eating, talking, or just bending down to pickup something. I was overjoyed to learn that all I had to do to fix my hearing aid issue was do a reset, duh! For me, hearing aids are the better solution and I don’t have to explain “I’m wearing my AirPods to hear you better, not so I can listen to music while you’re were talking.”
Thank you for the video, I bought them last week myself. I own hear aids, but at home I don’t enjoy wearing them. I really enjoy all of the advantages of the AirPods with all my devices. Especially my iwatch. 😊
Great job, I had no idea what sounds I have been missing! Thank You, keep the great videos coming!!!
You're welcome! It's amazing how much we hear that we don't even realize we're missing.
Thanks a bunch. I recently became aware that Air Pods Pro could be used as hearing aids. I suspect my hearing loss would be comparable to yours. My question is, have you tried wearing an Air Pod in just one ear? Lots of videos on You Tube on this topic. As always yours was the most clear, concise, and well produced that I have downloaded.
Yes, I've tried one ear and they work that way. But I can't seem to get used to the one-ear thing. So many people wear them that way too. Maybe I just need to give it a little more time. Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you Rich for your excellent and so helpful video and I can’t wait to have those AirPods Pro 2 installed in my ears!
Good video! According to my 2 brothers who are ENTs, Ear, Nose, and Throat MDs with audiology training, as we age, the hearing of the consonants (the non vowel letters in English) are a higher pitch and are the first to go. This includes the ‘crunch’ of leaves under your feet, and, in particular, female voices. Same for me. I have a similar pair of ear pods ( olive pro) that came out before apple upgraded. Same results and same function with hearing test…….plus, a complete app control panel on my iPhone and iPad. A real bonus for customization. Of course, same other functions as streaming audio and phone calls. 🌞👍🏻💥
Thanks Rich, Since the announcement, 10:41 I have been waiting for this to be available and I really appreciate you helping with the set up. I have mid level (mid to high 30’s) hearing loss. I have been wearing hearing aids for about 3 years. Although the Air Pods Pro now help with my hearing deficiencies, understandably not to the level of my hearing aids. However, wearing hearing aids all day can get annoying, irritating, and uncomfortable by the end of the day. The Air Pods now are a much more comfortable alternative at night as I’m winding down. Much appreciation to Apple as well. Again, thanks as always for all you valuable and helpful information.
It seems like my hearing problems are much like yours. The hearing test claims my hearing loss (even high frequencies) is not an issue, but my experience in noisy environments and while listening to TV news and talk shows clearly tells another story. The Airpods Pro 2 really made a huge difference. When having a tête-á-tête conversation in a restaurant, I use the iPhone microphone to focus my hearing on the person opposite to me. The background chat at the adjacent table miraculously disappears. This is something that 1,000 USD hearing aids are not capable of. - As a side note: The selective hearing that my wife accuses me of did not go away 🤣
Ha! We must be exactly alike. Thanks so much for watching!
🤣
Everything you state in your video is absolutely correct. I’ve been enjoying my new AirPods Pro 2’s for over a month and am just amazed at how well I can hear with them. You should do another video to cover the 3 Noise Control settings as I’m sure your subscribers would appreciate your excellent insight on those features. Thanks so much - Paul
Great, Rich, as always. I have these and have benefited greatly from them. I have had 3 sets of very expensive hearing aids and prefer the AirPods for the fit as well as the effectiveness. I would love for you to do a video on how to adjust them. Specifically, how to adjust the volume on either side. Keep up the good work!
it’s the tweaking part that is really important. I have the AP2 but can’t assist my husband on how to tweak the settings to make it most effective for a hearing device.
Hi Rich!
Very useful information! I wasn’t aware you could use air pods as hearing aids. My husband wears hearing aids. I’m wondering if this will work for him when he’s charging his hearing aids or if they work better than his hearing aids. I like that it gives you statistics on both ears too. We don’t have air pods, but it’s worth checking out. Thanks Rich for the video. Kindness, Teresa
Hi Teresa! I'm sure expensive hearing aids probably work better than the AirPods. But if you have a pair or can afford a couple hundred dollars, this feature is great. I really didn't realize how much my hearing had deteriorated until I turned on the hearing aid feature. I wasn't sure if anyone would be interested in this video but I thought it might be helpful to some. Hope you're doing well.
Nicely done. I have hearing aids ($7K!) and they are superb. I can control them w. my iPhone. The company is constantly improving the firmware. And I get 6 month checkups from the "pros" from whom I bought them. However, I really like this Airpod concept and might even obtain a pair as backup and for other purposes...i.e....I am a composer and would like to hear how they respond to certain instrumental frequencies. Thanks again for the excellent presentation.
Hi Rich, I commented on a previous video about doing an audio test and using my AirPod Pro 2’s to boost my hearing. I will be now be doing the Apple hearing test and hope for an improved result.
Thanks for the updated information. 🇦🇺
Glad I could help! Let me know how the test goes.
it’s the tweaking part that is really important. I have the AP2 but can’t assist my husband on how to tweak the settings to make it most effective for a hearing device. Plus, unfortunately, living in Canada, the hearing test is not available.
Wonderful....many thanks for explaining this concept Rich. My only concern is losing them from my ear. I tend to use AirPods on flights & if you snooze, they come out easily. Regards from Australia
I tried them with my moderate/severe hearing loss to use when my BTE hearing aids are in the way (haircuts …) but unfortunately they weren’t powerful enough. Even after I watched a couple videos on how to turn them way up it didn’t help . I ended up with a $99 pair from Amazon to do that job.
I've been using the AirPods Pro 2 for hearing aids from the get go. It's better than spending $5,000+ for a real set of hearing aids, YMMV. I even bought a second pair so I'm never without them on a typical day.
As always, great video. I got my AirPods Pro 2 yesterday. My expectations were very low. To my surprise Apple has done a fantastic job. I was really surprised of the results.
Glad they're working out for you! I wore them out walking today and I remain amazed at the decline in my hearing over the years. But the AirPods are helping a lot.
Hello,
I just had my 74th birthday. I have been having the exact same issues hearing things as you describe. I have just gotten my Air Pods Pro 2. I’ve taken the hearing test twice, with similar results. I have not tried my Air Pods extensively yet. But here are two observations that I have. One, my voice seems to have an echo. And second, I have had a previous version of a pair of Air Pods for quite sometime. I have trouble keeping them and the new ones (with the apparent appropriate fitting test) in my ears. It’s not much of a problem at home, but I am concerned about using them out and about. I really hope I can use them, particularly in noisy restaurants, where I have problems for a long time. Your reactions to my observations?
Haven't got AirPods .. yet. But I certainly have hearing loss. There's hearing tests online and I've been to a pharmacy . My hearing problems sound similar to how you describe yours, but are described as moderate. . So,... I am going to investigate... thanks a lot!
I've been wearing my AirPods Pro kust about every evening since I filmed this video. What a positive difference! Good luck investigated this. And thanks so much for watching.
Hi Rich, I do have hearing aids . But the AirPods Pro are a lot cheaper than regular hearing aids. I got my hearing aids at Costco a lot cheaper than a ENT, the ENT years ago were 5000! Costco was 1500. I may try AirPods Pro do they have different sizes that go in your ears ? I have small ears I have trouble keeping them in! Thanks for your assessment! Steve
Hey! Yes the AirPods Pro 2 come with different silicone tips for sizing. It took me a while to get used to them but they don't bother me now. And for me, they really work well. Thanks so much for watching!
I LOVE Your Chanel and "Senior Tech Desk",that just started. It helps my parents slot. Thank you😊😊
Appreciate you! I'm trying my best to make things easier for older folks.
This should be released in early December with iOS 18.2 here in Canada I’m looking forward to trying this out
Fellow Canadian here frustrated by the lack of Hearing Aid or Protection in 18.1 in Canada. Very curious, where did you hear that the feature will be included in 18.2?
Very informative and well produced video. I encourage all seniors to have their hearing professionally evaluated. Having a professional baseline is just smart healthcare. I didn't know what I was missing until I had mine checked. I didn't realize that I was guessing what people were saying ... and I was wrong many times. It's great that Apple has given us such a great product. Thanks again. 🌿Bless🕊
A couple of issues were encountered. Firstly, my airpods had to be updated to firmware version 7b19. The next issue was a show stopper. I am currently in France, and the Hearing Aid option software was no approved, even though I have a US purchased phone and have a US credit card with a US mailing address. Anyways, thank you for yet another great video and I look forward to using this feature hopefully soon
Did you set language to English US? Good luck
@@Bill-YellowDogWelding Yes. I think it was during my last update which was performed in France. I should have used a US VPN connection.
saved to my favorites!
what version of the AirPods firmware is needed for the hearing aid feature?
Excellent video!
Thanks so much for watching!
can you wear just one at a time?
It doesn’t seem to have been rolled out in the UK. despite me having a new 16Pro & IOS 18.1, must be a US launch
I think so. I think there needs to be some government approval in the UK before it rolls out - but my guess it's coming soon.
Thanks for the video. I've not set my AP2's up as hearing aids yet. I do think that they already present a degree of boost. I do own and use conventional behind the ear hearing aids. My hearing loss is not severe but have the typical roll off as frequencies increase. My audiologist said that what happens is that the lower frequencies end up drowning out the higher frequencies so that everything just sounds muddy in a noisy environment. I'm happy with my hearing aids but don't replace proper ear buds or headphones when one want to listen to music or other media. I will set my AP2s up as hearing aids and will use them as an adjunct to my regular hearing aids. For folks who've never used hearing aids there is typically an adjustment. All of those sounds you're now hearing were there all along, but you've just not been really hearing them. Things like water running, birds singing, scraping sounds, etc. What you describe is very normal. Thanks again for the video.
Alas, the hearing aid facility is not available in some countries including UK
Not yet. But it's coming. I think things have to worked out with the UK health authorities before a launch.
Do you need a Apple pro phone to do this exercise?
I don't think so, but try the test and if it allows you to take it, your phone is ok to use.
I have the newest Iphone 16 pro and Airpods 4 and I do not have this hearing setting. hmm
Yes, this is for the AirPods Pro with the silicone tips. Not the AirPods 4. Which is a shame because I just bought the AirPods 4 and like the feel of them in my ears a little better than the AirPods Pro (though I'm getting used to the silicone tips in the Pros). Thanks so much for watching!
Not in Australia😢they aren’t
Rich, I have the new pro 2 earbuds from Amazon at the $169 price. Love them but cannot set them up as hearing aids. Though I am running the correct iOS on my iPad and iPhone (10XR) my setup screen is different. I have the fit test but see nothing on setting these up as hearing aids. No Hearing Assistance option ?
I don’t have that option either. I think it’s because I’m in the UK and they haven’t rolled it out to us yet.
I having hearing aids. You need to get to Costco and take a free hearing test. Part of the problem is there are certain sounds and words you lose and your mind will never bring them back, even with hearing aids.
The AirPods, which I have also, don’t even begin to touch what well fitted hearing aids will do for you. You need to get a test.
AirPods are not yet a good substitute for hearing aids.
I need to upgrade to 18.1. I have pro2 EarPods. Let’s see.
Hope it works out for you. It sure did for me!
Hearing loss is more common in the elderly, and it is also more common that elderly people don’t have iphones or ipads. I have friends in their 60s and 70s who don’t understand smart phones and who don’t want to have one because the phone is “too complicated” , and certainly they will not spend that kind of money either.
Well, that's the main reason this channel exists. It all started with me trying to help my 90 yr old mother learn how to use her iPad. So I guess there are some older folks open to new things. But honestly, I really try to keep my videos as easy to follow as possible so folks don't just throw their iPad into the garbage can in frustration. But I certainly get what you're saying.
It seems like almost everybody at my senior’s center is using their smart phone.
Most of my friends in their 70s use iPhones and iPads. Too bad you sweep everyone with one broad brush.
My dad is going to be 93 soon and has an iPhone and iPad he uses daily. I’m thinking he may benefit from some AirPods.
I am not a fan of putting anything in my ears and when I need voice chat or to listen to something without disturbing others I use headsets/headphones. I will have to at some stage get hearing aids but most likely it will be fitted aids. Your presentation gives a good description of how the iPods work as hearing aids, thank you; and you never know perhaps one day . . .
So far they have worked great. And with the Voice boost feature (I didn't really cover this) it helps magnify the voice of the person you're talking too. Really a nice feature. I didn't know how much sound I was missing until I started using these as hearing aids. I'm still a little shaken that I'm old enough to need these though.
Do you need to have the phone with you for this to work? I have an iPad, but an Android phone.
The AirPods will work as hearing aids without your iPad present, but if you want to make adjustments such as ambient noise reduction or conversation boost, then you would need your iPad.
Not in the UK..
Are there 2 versions of air pods 2 ? Air pod 4 doesn’t do hearing aid?
Only the Airpods Pro 2 has the chip that lets it serve as a hearing aid. Some retailers will call it the Airpods Pro (second generation). It has been out about a year, but the hearing aid feature is recent. Since it can replace prescription hearing aids for those with mild to moderate hearing loss, they needed FDA approval in the U.S. Approval in other countries is still pending.
I don’t see a hearing hearing assistance sections on my phone or iPad. I have the pro2 AirPods. Does the model matter?
It may not be rolled out in your location just yet. It's my understanding that Apple will be rolling this out around the world when government hurdles are overcome.
Anything like this for the Android system?
From what I can see, just active noise cancellation.
Thank you. This will be great for my husband.
It's definitely worth a try. I'm using my AirPods every evening.
I tried them as hearing aides, because they are basically amplifiers they didn’t work.
I bought real hearing aides this week. I had a professional audiologist perform a hearing test and it was actually pretty close to the Apple hearing test.
The Oticon Intents are far better than the AirPods for me.
They were $5,500.00 and my insurance company paid 100%. Sadly, Medicare won’t pay for real hearing aides, only private insurance companies will.
I appreciate your detailed feedback! Glad you found what works for you.
Most insurance companies don’t pay nearly that much. Mine only paid $100 for my $3,000 aids.
@@jameskelly9457 geez, my insurance company Aetna, will pay $3,000.00 per ear every 3 years.
How can you get private insurance if your on Medicare with a supplement?
Nice video
I wear headphones watching TV and I still have a problem understanding some voices.
👍 Good video! I'll bet that we still can't wear them in California while driving! 😒
Not permitted in Canada. A threat to our audiologist and the incredible prices they charge for hearing aids…
I think Apple is slowly rolling it out around the world. But government approval is most likely required to qualify the AirPods as clinical grade hearing aids. I hope this feature males it your way soon. Since I made this video I've been wearing the AirPods in the evening when watching TV with my wife. They've made a great difference. The AirPods really work!
I love the AirPods Pro, but after about 20-30 minutes, they become uncomfortable in my ears, even when using the smallest ear tips.
I think this might be true for many people. I think I've grown accustomed to them so I can wear them longer. But for me, the hearing aid feature is worth the discomfort. Thanks so much for watching!
They are not hearing aids in the uk 😢
Not yet. I think Apple is rolling this out first in the US then other parts of the world including the UK.
The only thing I don’t like about using these is the appearance. If they didn’t hang so far down your ear, I’d like them better (I have very short hair, so can’t hide them that way). People will be constantly assuming you’re listening to music instead of needing them as hearing aids.
So I've been wearing them in public and have been pretty self conscious. But honestly, I haven't been given a second look yet. It just seems sort of rude to wear them when someone is talking to you even though they're the reason you can hear the person talking to you! Anyway, they help me so I'm going to keep on wearing them. Thanks so much for watching!
Yeh this has been out for acouple of years now on all phones its called voice detect, just stop the music and you can hear everyones voices if your looking at them
My hearing is good. My listening isn't so good.
Ha! Perfect comment.
Like your comment! My husband has hearing loss, but his listening isn’t so great either.
@@Teresa-K I thought my problem was there is too much input. :)
Sorry but it’s misleading to say they are hearing aids. They are volume boosters with limited L/R channel adjustment. Good for that but these are no way real hearing aids.
Pro tip: Get an extended warranty as I’ve had two pairs of Pro2 go bad.
Should have done that for sure. It would have been cheaper!
@ I negotiated half price on the replacement after haggling for days at Apple because I think it’s a systemic problem that Apple won’t admit to. Asked for an extended warranty and the manger said not on replacement. Apple BS as they played me telling me to call the 800 number and when I call they told me to go into the store. Apple Catch-22.
Unless you’re in Australia. Update changed nothing for us.
Also, for some reason I can’t get the fit to be good in my husband’s ears, ever. Changing the tip size doesn’t seem to help.
No, they are not. The AirPods have certain features in common with hearing aids. My Rextons ≠ Air Pods, they do much more.
Apple lists the AirPods as FDA approved, clinical grade hearing aids. My guess is they meet that legal threshold but do not match the level of more expensive hearing aids. But for me, they are working really well. Thanks so much for watching!
I have several friends, in our 70’s now, who need hearing aids but are too vain to wear them. Drives their wives, and children, crazy. However - just as these guys resist hearing aids you sure as HECK won’t find them walking around wearing Airpods. And some of us think these things are the hardest product to keep in the ears - no matter how many tips one is given.
how about young kids???
You mean to help young kids hear? I guess it depends on your hearing loss and whether the AirPods would fit a kid. The test starts out by asking if your 18 yrs old, so maybe younger kids hearing develops over time and the test would not yield an accurate result. No harm in trying...
