Cuban rum is still a blind spot for me but that makes this video even more interesting to me. There’s just point I didn’t expect: the 40/41% limit. Because I remember that one of the most ‚hated‘ rums last year was a single cask from Cuba (RX11628) bottled at 59.6%. It says „Cuba Rum“ very prominently on the bottle.
And regarding my favourite Cuban rum: I didn’t really like the more expensive ones I’ve tried, found some of them a bit bland. But I’m a fan of the Havana 3 for mixing. Great value for money and nice notes not just of vanilla and wood but also citrus and a bit of floral notes as well. Can’t go wrong with that for 10-15€.

Love Havana 7 and selection de maestros, and Ron Santiago. I think for the price they are superb, might be a bit controversial but in some ways I'm glad of the embargo for the reason that Cuba will produce X barrels per year, without the embargo the American Market would probably suck up most of that, therefore it would become hard to find and expensive in the UK/ Europe.
The American market created the market for Cuban rum, as well as the Cuban cigar market. Proximity brother, it’s all about proximity. It was largely due to Cuba’s proximity to the United States that the market for Cuban goods was really even lucrative. The American market dominates the entire continent, and a every business wants access to it. That’s why products are made to begin with, to sell. Otherwise everyone would have to rely on what they could produce themselves. The Cuban Revolution, while arguably necessary in that corrupt regime, simply replaced it with one that was actually worse for Cubans. It was good for party members though and that’s the only reason it still exists. Cuba, like China, has betrayed its own principles in order to keep propping up that failed system. Neither of them remotely resemble Marxism and have betrayed the most essential dogmas of that ideal. They both exist solely to provide goods to satisfy the fetishism of commodities. Cuba sells its cigars and rum, and China makes its cheap electronics and cell phones. And who benefits? The party elite and their friends, that’s all

Great Video. If the rum has the seal of guarantee (that green sticker) the business is in bed with the Cuban gov. with no exceptions. The % of ownership may differ I am sure but Cuban Rum = Gov Rum

It's been far too long for me to properly remember if it is actually better than HC7, or if it was my then-young palate playing games... But Varadero 7 slapped.
Hi Steve, have you tried Eminente rum? I'm yet to try but I recall you mentioning you prefer a 'younger' rum, this one has been aged for 7 years.

de maestros is hard to beat but only had 2 Cuban rums to date this and the Havana 7 years old which i didn't like
