    I got hooked on OFTD. I like a rum and ginger, but I recently mixed oftd with hard apple cider. I compared it side by side with ginger and the cider was better. Then I mixed a half glass of Apple/oftd with a half glass of ginger/oftd it was amazing.

      Same - if I had to pick one it's OFTD every time, absolutely great. It's strong, but I like to sip it on ice so there's a bit of dilution. It's spectacular in the Mai Tai - I'd guess it's a great stand in for the W&N 15 or 17; I also love pairing it with El Dorado 5 in my Ancient Mariner or Navy Grog.

    Nice Vid! Plantation OFTD for me - Definitely a must for Painkiller and Hurricane. I would recommend the Hibiscus Punch Royale (Typically calls for an Aged Jamaican Rum but a Dark Rum can shine here imo)

      @@StevetheBarmanUK they actually add molasses to color black rum a lot of the time, just thought it might be worth pointing out since you had the goslings black seal up there. That can actually add some flavor and sweetness for sure

    • @StevetheBarmanUK
      @StevetheBarmanUK  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      More often than not, it’s actually something by called e150 which is distillers Caramel “colour”. Rarely would actual molasses get added after distillation…cos quite frankly it doesn’t actually taste that great. It’s the Molasses that’s fermented, then distilled to make Rum. For Darker coloured Rums, they’d just actually add more e150 and sweeten it up with sugar. And for reference, most Brands use e150. Even the Brands that profess not to add additives. When they have ongoing releases, they always add e150 for consistency batch to batch 👍

    Slowly working my way through your content 😊 watched this yesterday and had to come back today to say that a Dark and Stormy with Myer's is in fact lovely, cheers!
    When I first started I assumed dark rum referred to colour, so when I saw it in recipes I was thinking Havana 7, Kraken, Appleton 8 etc. Pleased to say I've got past the beginner stage and I've been happy to explore the higher quality offerings from brands I like. Still so much to learn but I'm glad I've got your channel as a guide! I really enjoy sipping along with the blue channel and trying to pick out the notes you mention, my nose is slower than my taste buds though haha 😅

    Personally for me a Mai Tai cries out for an aged Jamaican rum with at least some funk on it. That said, I know Kevin Crossman uses 1/4 OFTD in his ultimate blend so there’s definitely room for a dark rum in the mix.

    Hi Steve, I have been following your reviews and enjoy watching them while I am sipping whatever I can get my hands on.
    Just one question : You have said that Myers's Dark Rum has no dosage/sugar in it. I have tried searching online reviews but nobody ever mentioned about any dosage in Myers's. Even The Fat Rum Pirate didn't mention about it. I have even asked in Reddit regarding this and most of them said that Dark Rums usually have added sugar. So, I take it from you that it's pure and does not have any dosage in it? If it is so, it's the most easily available (and not expensive) non-dosage pure rum that people who love unadulterated rums can have.
    Thank you.

    Coruba is a weird one. There is a brand that is bottled in Basel, Switzerland. They produce the Coruba Non Plus Ultra in a 40% abv and overproof version. However they are not sold to the US. In the US the brand is operated completely independent and produce entirely different rums. In continental Europe the non plus ultra series are available but not the American blends.

      @StevetheBarmanUK  ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't hold me to this. But i'm 99% sure (not 100%..just off it) that the Swiss Coruba IS the Brand you get in the US. We don't get it here in the UK. But the Logos & websites are the same.

    It may have been asked but I've only just seen your video. When you mentioned the one that's missing and pulled out kraken, I was expecting you to say lambs.. you must have a low opinion of it as it doesn't feature but can I ask why?

    • @StevetheBarmanUK
      @StevetheBarmanUK  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not low opinion. But it is like Kraken…and Capt Morgs. It’s not proper Rum. Just merely a blend of very cheap light (white) unaged rum, that’s had a lot of Caramel added to colour it…and sweeten it. When you try it alongside most other proper Dark Rums, it’s so sweet. And even though there’s no legal definition, it doesn’t qualify as a Navy Style Rum, nor a Navy Strength Rum. So is basically disregarded in Rum world. BUT. Does it taste okay with Coke. For sure. But it ain’t gonna work too well in Cocktails.

    Is dark rum classed as navy rum

    • @StevetheBarmanUK
      @StevetheBarmanUK  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. It's a whole different Category. And while "Navy Rum" doesn't have a specific Rule/Law, its widely considered to be either 54.5% or 57% AND is a blend of Aged Rums from different Countries/Islands. Like Barbados, Jamaica & Trinidad. For example, Smith & Cross, although it is 57% it is not a Navy Rum because it's just from Jamaica. Pussers is NOT a Navy Rum as its just Guyana Rum bottled in the BVIs. There are many "Navy Style" Rums out there that have one of the 2 Attributes...or maybe just Dark in Colour. But there are actually very few Proper Navy Rums in existence. For ref, Lambs IS NOT a Navy Rum. Nor is Woods. Don't confuse Navy Style with Navy Rum. But at the end of th day, it all comes back to point 1... there is no legal definition of Navy Rum. So Lambs/Woods can call themselves Navy Rum.

    • @PamD1
      @PamD1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Multiply the amount of 40% needed in a cocktail by 0.58 to work out how much OFTD you need.

      60×0.58 =roughly 35ml OFTD

    think this calls for a story. Woods is what i refer to as dangerous rum, every time i go out to the club with my mates if its a good night you will usually end finding me bowling towards you with a weird looking glass saying "here taste this" when i have got too drunk and gone ah woods go on then as it shocks bartenders when i order it. is it my favourite, no. I say that crown has to go to Pussers rum, dads influence. I do like a pussers painkiller and a dark n stormy tbh so likely a tie cos i rarely have the painkiller.
