Have you ever considered a video on pirate level rums or what realistically could have been? Just talking heavily on the history. I think you made something like that but a real deep dive on the history and current market could be cool to hear about. I am curious what was and is now on rum.
Another very good and informative talk on rum, everything on my rum shelf has changed. It was OVD , Kraken and Mount Gay. Now its Don Papa, Pusser's and Flor-de-Cana 5 year old. I haven't opened the former two but I have opened the latter. Thank you for making my rum nights far better and relaxing than they used to be.
This explains a lot! I would watch your review and then an American's review and they wouldn't match up at all. Now I know. I live in America and would like to have the choice too, as I would like the lower ABV. I did see in these comments that someone said the lower ABV is available somewhere, so hunting I go! Thanks for your channel. I am starting my Rum journey now, but I will probably stick to spiced lower ABV rums. I've had lots of Bourbon on the Bourbon Trail here and the bite is always the thing I wish would go away. I can't get use to it. But I don't want to have to mix it with something every time either. Guess I'm a spiced rum advocate. And yes, I know there are better spiced rums than Kraken, but I'm not willing to fork over a lot of money on alcohol.
G'day Steve. The Aussie Kraken is 40% ABV too. I've never tried it, so I gather what you've described for the UK's, I should expect for ours as well. The majority of our seller's review sites have Kraken at 4.5 ⭐ So we must be liking it. Cheers
That’s crappy that you don’t get both. At my local liquor store they have the 94 proof and also a 70 proof version, both for $19.98. I found this video while trying to decide which one to get. I’m going to assume the 70 probably tastes more like your version, maybe? Which I think I might like better because I don’t mind sweeter & less alcohol burn.
This should make good reading. There's even a table on there already, but that assumes all conditions are perfect. But the website does give you the calculations to work it out...which I'm trying to do. www.drecon.dk/
We need Nucky Thomson to send some via the board walk. I agree uk version is syrupy. However , With A established name shouldn't it be the same product.
just found your channel and as a rum lover I just wanted to say thank you for your own opinion we all have our own opinion so whatever one you like be careful you don't try to make people believe your opinion is better
I appreciate that! I do have my opinions from time to time. But at the end of the day, I never wanna put anyone off trying something. We all have different palates.
The us version is so high it scares me to drink as im an alcoholic. I also hate burn or amonia type stuff. I want to try a lower proof version of it. I hear they in usa also have a lower abv version at 35%. I have yet to see it but id feel comfy trying that. 40% abv is my max beyond that i know i will not cut myself off. Or be fooled by the amount in bottle to alcohol in blood. I hear it's blueberry oriented which sounds unique and nice but again i worry on abv. I suppose ill try a bottle when smite 2 has its beta test and invites me 😆 🤣 😂. Hopefully the kraken is still in the game so it makes some sense. I have had high abv alcohols beyond 40% but i hate the burn and feel you lose any taste worth speaking on but you feel buzzed earlier. Kind of defeats the fun or relaxation of the drink for me. Eventaully starts reminding me of moonshine... or rubbing alcohol i use to clean my electronics.
Not a big Rum drinker , I buy the standard captain morgans spiced Rum ,lambs Rum, Dead Mans fingers .....Then I bought Kraken ,different ball game way nicer .now I cant drink any others ,they just don't taste as good saying that just bought the captain morgan dark in hope it would be as good .nowhere near...gutted cos Kraken is now £27.50 for 70cl in Tesco and others are like £18 t0 £19...and i pretty much drink all of it in 1 or 2 nights.
Not sure if this has been mentioned before but here in the USA we have a black label Kraken rum that is less ABV and the one one you have here on your video that is higher ABV.
Steve fascinating video not a fan of THE uK Karaken although I keep a bottle in the house for my step son who is a big fan of Kraken and Cohe. US version definitely sounds much better. So what is the commercial driver here are they actually produced by the same company? While the US tax system is very different but most US sprit are 40% abv and although there is a cost saving in the UK of going for 37.5abv, tax does not seem to be the issue here so why go to all the trouble of producing two such radically different versions of tge same drink? Seems counterproductive to me, you go to all tge trouble of building a brand and then dilute that value by producing radically different versions of the same product
Exactly that... one of the other comments on here, apparently there's a 35% version in the US too. which means there's at least 3 different versions of the same product for just 2 markets! So bizarre!
Very interesting, I had no idea the kraken rum we get here in the US is stronger and less sweet, let alone any different at all from the UK version! I have enjoyed the kraken from time to time it's a very decent spiced rum for the price.

Steve, Great review of the two Krakens. Its amazing what changes are made by the distiller to fit with certain geographies.

What an awesome Comment. Thank you my friend! Thanks for watching.
The 94 proof is definitely my go to. Unfortunately it’s been fairly difficult to find around here without going to different stores.
Oh, I had no idea. Christ, there'd never be a Kraken shortage in the UK. It's more likely to be a Petrol shortage!
It was for a short time here to but a talk with the manager of the store fixed that

Any ldeaa what to put with the new cherry one? Cocktails etc..
The version sent to Brazil is 35% Alc vol. (70 proof?)
For Latam we have a different version with 35%. I was fighting with my distributor and I just found your video. Great content.

Cheers John. Yeah, I'd expect the Aussie stuff to be the same as the UK. No weird laws like in the US.
Interesting. Im in Canada so it's probably different for here as well. Now I'm really confused.
whats the closest to 1783 mixer got any recipies i could give a go lyles dark syrup added to mineral water
Think I’ll try that buddy, thanks
As an American currently living in the UK, I gotta say that I truly prefer the US version. It's a very palatable 47% drink!
In Norway it is rated at 40%

Hello, thank you for this video. Can you tell me how you (roughly) calculated the sugar content please? Thank you

It's been a few years since i last had kraken rum, i've only had the US version though.
I agree you guys should have the full strength kraken but meanwhile our beer is limited on its strength... strange

Gotta get you some DMF Spiced to compare now!

No i didn't know that. Just looked though, 35% ABV. So again thats different to our UK 40% stuff. It boggles me!!!
@@StevetheBarmanUK yes I find that very odd as well. Yet very interesting. Great video
still love your comparison videos 👍
Glad you like them Ross. We'll still do some from time to time.
Interesting, considering the US add sugar to everything possible.
I hate rum but I love this. my daughter introduced me to it and now I love rum not like that rum back in my day.
Interesting. I have Jamaican relatives who insist that Wray and Nephews overproof is stronger in JA than in here in USA.
I have heard that too. BUT, from the evidence I've seen, the ABV/Proof on the bottles is identical. I've never seen WN higher than 63%.

Size of the bottle matters!!!!

Love my 94 proof 1.75L 🤣
