      @Christopher Bingham they both are lmfao. Calling one not vs the other just shows you know nothing. The Offspring are genuinely the worst band to ever come out and be lumped into punk. At least Green Day made a couple good songs back in the day. Can't say that for Offspring.

      @@davebanfield6251 It's a shame that 90 percent of the people who bought Throwing Copper have probably never heard a single song off their best album (in our opinion, anyway). Mental Jewelry is superb, from start to finish. The Beauty of Gray is my favorite song of all-time. I saw Ed and the boys play a tiny club in Baltimore named Max's on Broadway in the spring of 1992. Definitely my most memorable concert experience ever. I was blown away by the depth/spirit/maturity of a bunch of 21 year-olds from small-town PA. I was in my late 20's at the time. I remember reading in a zine that some people were speculating that Ed's dad had written the lyrics to many of the songs, because of their maturity...and because he was their manager at the time, and traveled with the band. I'm sure that didn't last long. I didn't really follow their career much after that, other than hearing them on the radio and thinking how fortunate I was to see them in an unadulterated state. Lightning Crashes was brilliant--and the type of song I expected from them--but I didn't see that hard left-turn coming. And now I learn it was from all the fun and sun in Jamaica!

    Their story is like your basic premise for a typical rock band movie; humble beginnings, surprising breakthrough, disillusioned success, record label sets them up for _the_ fight → the breakup → the reconciliation, the highly anticipated (but not as popular as once were) reunion on their early 40s and the comfortably average live gig in front of 100 people as the camera fades to credits. All jokes aside, nice story, I dig some of their stuff

    Pretty great, kinda forgotten band save for "Lightning Crashes"" which to be honest is probably their worst single. Along with a little help from Tool they served to introduce young westerners, like myself, to concepts from the eastern religions. Dude has one helluva voice as well. One of the few mainstream bands from the period that didn't employ the "yarling" style of vocals, thank God. Sounded great when Eddie or Lane did it, but then came the parade of imitators, totalling the style by running it into the ground.

    None of your pictures showed Kowalcyk with long hair. His hair was kind of a representation of metamorphosis within the Throwing Copper album. For the lead single "Selling the Drama" he's full long hair. For the "I Alone" video he had a bald head around the center which was a Hari Krishna type ponytail. By "Lightning Crashes" he was totally bald. It was meant to be noticed, but not many people do.

    I have zero respect for +LIVE+.... The way they treated Chris Shinn was awful. Even the record they made with him ("The Turn", funded by fans, btw) was pulled from their website when Ed rejoined. Shinn brought new life into the band only to be erased from the band's history.

    • @DesertRainReads
      @DesertRainReads 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Agreed, I was mixed about Ed returning, especially when he himself talked so much shit about the band after he left. Sure, great singer who sounds good, but holy shit, I would not allow money to cloud my judgment. Shinn was also a damn good fit with the band and The Turn was a damn good album. Wish they continued to work with him.

    I read the court documents on the the lawsuit and the truth was that Ed (enabled by his manager) went full Axl Rose on the band. Ed wanted sole songwriting credit for all future Live material as well as on any reissues of the old albums. He had a million-dollar publishing deal in the works and he wanted to be able to show that he was the true creative force of the band. The other guys felt like they were owed their portion of that deal, and it ended up in court.
    It was pure greed on his part, and a disgusting thing to do to your childhood friends.

    I was in high school in the first half of the 90s and wasn't into the "mainstream alternative" bands in general, but none drove me as nuts as Live. Ever since I saw that slow-mo video where their faux-rocking-out was so pronounced, I thought they were the biggest phonies on the scene. Pretending to look tortured doesn't make you a good band, my dudes. After a few decades I have come to appreciate many of those bands - The Smashing Pumpkins for one - but Live still just sounds like bogus JC Penny rock to me.

    Lol this band was nothing more than glad in the pan or a one hit wonder. They only had fumes to ignite then simply burned out. Typical for the 90s. Basically same with all the previous decades here and gone bands. There’s a reason this band flopped. Simply couldn’t refuel the entire tank. This band reminds me of Dexy’s midnight riders. Made one hit and simply spazzed out.

    A lot of people slag on Ed for asking for more royalties...but I am a guy who writes 95% of the songs for his band....splitting things evenly is NOT fair. You spend months perfecting a lyric, and chord change, a melody....while the rest of the band is having BBQ, going on vacations. Lazy people don't realize how hard it is to write a song.

      I don't understand how someone wouldn't want to be involved in the songwriting. I'm the bassist in my band and have a really large hand in the songwriting...my bandmates see me as a freak due to my synesthetic perfect pitch (in a good way). But also, the way we write is very open. Everything is for the song and not the ego.

    Makes perfect sense for a kid wanting to be in a band with his Junior High buddies circa 1984 to audition with a Duran Duran song!
