  • In this oil painting tutorial I'll show you how to paint trees in the mist. You will learn how to paint trees in an autumnal scene that are shrouded by mist in the background. I'll demonstrate my photorealistic oil painting technique and show you what brushes and oil colours to use to paint an autumn landscape scene.
I'm a professional landscape artist with over 20 years of experience in oil painting. My TH-cam Channel is dedicated to helping people learn how to paint in oils. I really believe that everyone can learn how to paint!

I cannot even find the words to express my awe at your painting of trees (and other things too). As a new painter I have watched your videos over and over. You go from the what the heck is he doing stage to the OMG he just made it look real. One day I hope to be one tenth as good as you. Your patience in painting leaves is beyond anyone I've seen. Thank you for the insirpation.

It’s just like the tracks I used to ride through in Chopwell Woods with my pony Danny Boy and Tigger. We’d often see deer in the shadows or the odd fox. They never bothered about our presence at all and went about their day as if we were part of the scenery, wandering through the morning mist together towards the new day. I think because I was riding, they only smelled horse not human. Not frightening at all as we plodded on quietly. Lovely precious memories.

Hello Michael. I was so thrilled to come across this tutorial, as I've been battling with a forest scene - in acrylics. Now I know how to finish it, and it was so good to see how you dealt with the path, and made it and the painting of the leaves seem so simple. I'm going to airbrush the mist over the black tree trunks and background trees. Your vast talent and experience make it only one day's painting. Wow! Thank you!

It's nice to hear a professional painter like yourself admit they are an idiot (forgetting you had already done a painting, lol. Classic!) and that they sometimes get stuck. I feel like that with most of my painting. but at least you know the solution having a rest from a picture then coming back to it often helps me, I have two paintings that I have not worked on for months, and I have not got back to them yet, but I will some time soon, now Christmas is over and a variety of other things that were getting in the way of me working on my art. I will not give up on them - eventually I will complete them. But thankyou for being human :)

Hi Michael, have you done any cityscapes, architectural type of paintings yet? I seemed to notice one while you were counting your pictures! if so, would you consider doing a demo of one, as that's something I have a lot of difficulty with. It would be interesting to learn from your approach. This one is lovely, as always, with the great depth of detail, in which you excel, and the colours are spot on. Way to go!!
