Mate got to warn you I've kept these turtles for years, and when they were babies especially they were escape artists so those ferns might be an issue. Also they will climb all over your plants so they won't last long.
Also in my experience you have to be really secure your rocks and make sure they are safe because some turtles will dig around in the soil and rocks, and it's possible that they get stuck under the rocks and drown. It happened to one of my turtles many years ago. :'''(
So I found a baby red eared turtle in one of the ponds by my house (and by pond, I mean a polluted water-filled dump). When I found him, I honestly thought he was dead but then I saw him move. He didn't look to good, I mean he was struggling to swim and was sinking in the water. The pond was just so bad(I mean it literally had 2 full trash bags and a damn propane tank floating in there) I couldn't just leave him there. So I took him out and took him home and put him in some clean water. To my surprise, he really livened up when I put him in cleaner water. I checked for any health concerns(I did some research) he seemed okay. I've never cared for turtles before so I dont have the equipment to take care of him and Im also not willing to keep him. This video helped me a bit to get an idea of a healthy habitat. So far he's doing pretty good, unfortunately I don't have a heat lamp so I kept a portion of the tank outside in the sun and I put a basking rock there too. Im planning on letting him go at a cleaner pond I know about where Im sure he'll grow happily and healthy. Thanks, by the way his name is Flobert. Edit: good news! I let him go at my local park pond and he seemed to be alot happier there
i’d be careful feeding wild earthworms to your axolotl, i’m sure he’s fine but sometimes wild worms can carry parasites or harmful organisms that could make Pancho sick- awesome turtle setup btw :)
Add danios with the turtle tank!! Turtle community tank will look so awesome!! Plus fast swimming fish will be good exercise for the turtle. Also might wanna plug in those big gaps with some rocks. Might get stuck there.
In my experience musk turtles are a lot cleaner than other turtles, your turtles can get out with your rocks that high, I think a waterfall with an in tank filter on the side that isn't for basking would be cool, musk turtles tend to grow slower than other turtles, the basking spot needs to be dry, be careful with ferns and ivy, they can be poisonous to animals if their eaten, you can use small palms, spiderplants, dracaena/lucky bamboo, flamingo plants, amazon swords, anubias, arrowhead vines, and peace lilies.
I used to keep 2 baby red eared sliders in a 5 gallon. Then 1 months later, upgraded them to a 10 gallon. Then 4 months later to a 50 gallon. They’ve been in that tank for over 1 year now. They’ve slowed down in growing, but still going. Will probably need to rehome them once they’ve grown out the 50 gallons. Luckily I know someone who have a pond and will be able to take them once the time comes.
Love the look, but the turtle can potentially climb out via those plants in the left corner. (Depending how small/heavy he is) I had a simular setup and my turtle did. His little shell cracked from the drop. He was in a lot of pain. The vet fixed him and he’s fine now. If you would move the plant away from the glass, the turtle probably won’t be able to reach over the glass.
Found a baby red eared turtle in my pool yesterday. Debating if we are going to commit to him becoming a pet or if we release him in the canal behind us. My son Leonardo and Raphael the turtle stare at each other and have become attached. We were looking for a pet but, our new pet may have found us. Love watching these in depth videos. We've learned so much!
Nice! I also had a red eared slider that eventually got too big for a home aquarium. Hopefully the musk turtle is less of a hog. I would definitely add some duckweed on the surface. It would help with water chemistry and give a really natutal look.
Oooh I also use a sifter/sieve and water to separate gravel and sand. It’s very effective! I love the idea of the plant packets. I’ll copy that (asking for permission now). 😂😅
I keep turtles and this tank is just beautiful! Excellent set up for a little hatchling! I haven’t had any luck keeping live plants with my turtles; they just destroy them! Lol. Your little musk is more carnivorous but don’t be surprised if they munch on the plants! You’ve kept turtles before, so I’m sure you are aware! :). The only other thing I’d consider here is reducing the height of rocks and plants on the left side... turtles are really good climbers; hatchlings included! I can see your little guy climbing out of there! Even if you think he can’t, I’d play it safe. You’d be surprised how resourceful they are and will get on top of those plants and out they go! Believe me when I say, hatchlings are really hard to find if they escape! I had it happen once and it took me a few hours and tearing apart a room to find her! I learned my lesson quickly, so just wanted to help you out! :)
If you just want one light for basking and for uvb/uva get a mercury vapor bulb, it’s heats and gives the nutrients the turtle needs, the one you are using isn’t good, those don’t give off uvb/uva at all, for heat they are good but not for the uvb/uva. Mercury vapors bulbs are amazing and work so well, mine lasted for a full year. I got mines off amazon.
Good on ya for not taking your fish back. Obviously whatever is best for the fish is key but you see so many fish keeping youtubers go through a sort of a fish of the month before they get rid of them somehow, doesn’t set a good example to newcomers/ kids, I think. Good going, MD 👍🏻
