I'm a 52 yr old man at about a week and a half after my right hip replacement. Watching your video was the first time everything made sense. All of what you experienced, I am currently experiencing. The knee pain, the feeling of a wallet from the tightness, everything. All these other videos about how people are doing so well and left the hospital without even a walker and blah blah blah, those weren't helping me at all. Yours made sense. Thanks.

I appreciate that. I was not sure if I should post that video or not because I had heard others say those things but I thought maybe it might help someone. I don't even know I had hip replacement now. It works so good. It takes time but you will get there. Best of luck in your recovery.

@@GaryForgingOn I'm going though the same thing that you are. Like they say, I think doctors paint a more rosy picture than what is reality. Sort of like those diet pill commercials where all the testimonials show everyone smiling and losing 30 pounds in their first week.

@@torydz yes, that is a good analogy. And all those people I knew on facebook that said it was nothing... Since I posted this I found out that most people go through more pain that those people let on about. Hope you are doing well and healing up and recovering. It gets a lot better and is well worth it in the end.

I’m a 72 yr old female. Always something of a workout junkie….I needed to hear this video. My Dr said “you’ll do great, you’re strong and fit, you’ll walk out of here”…..I found that a little hard to believe and your video confirms that I’d better be prepared and not assume….thanks.

Making these videos have allowed me to hear from so many different people that have gone through this and everyone heal at such different rates. I thought I would bounce back in no time but I was wrong. :)
I hope and pray you have a successful surgery and recovery. My doctor said everyone is different and heal at different rates but everyone is about the same at the 12 week mark.

62 y.o. former Marine and outdoor jock here.. Mountain biker..
I'm on day 4 of right anterior hip replacement..
    Vitals are normal.
Got some minor swelling and pain.
No pain while laying down and sleeping, which is a miracle itself compared to the osteoarthritis, which was horrible.
Using an ice pack regularly and putting a pillow under my leg at night to control swelling..
Only taking 2000mg of acetaminophen daily for pain, divided in two doses.
Taking nomal showers, and walking normally but slowly to try to walk as normally as possible. Don't need much help. But I'm staying in the house and being very careful for now.
No longer need the walker or the cane, but still use for exercises or if necessary.
The leg lifter for getting into bed is essential, especially for the first week or so.
Every day, it gets a little better.
First 3 days are the worst. Day 2 was the worst for me (temp. 99), but not too bad even with only acetaminophen. That evening temp went back down to normal.
I would advise most people to take the pain meds, at least for a few days, you'll be more comfortable.
    The exercises are important..
Hip feels a little tight, and I'm limiting my mobility somewhat for healing purposes.

So glad you are doing so good with your recovery. That is awesome. I agree with the exercise. I have improved so much doing more exercising and pushing my new joints. After the hip replacement in 2019 I had both knees replaced in 2022. keeping up the exercises has really helped strengthen up my legs after I got so weak in my right leg from all the problems. It is nice to not hurt from the damage and arthritis . Take care and thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.

great vid, Gary. I'm a 58 year old guy in good shape. Before my surgery--I worked out 5x a week in the gym, (5'10" and weigh 200lbs). Did cardio 4x a week, blah, blah... I say all this because I thought "I'm in great shape, this will be a piece of cake" (after reading other people on the internet and their superhero recoveries). I just had my THR (anterior) on Friday (4/19)...so today is day 5 of recovery, Well...not exactly a piece of cake. I'm doing okay, but certainly have plenty of pain, thigh is swollen and somewhat tingling/numb, knee is somewhat swollen, etc. I just walked down my street about 4 houses down and back (with my walker) and now leg is pretty sore and stiff. I am so happy I found your video today as I was thinking "is it me.....why am I hurting....why am I limping......why is my thigh so swollen, etc". Glad to know most of us are like you (and each other) and not like the embellished superhero stories out there. Eric

@erichill91 had my anterior hip surgery on 4/19 as well. I saw those videos about people walking after surgery as well . When I went to PT that Monday after surgery, my PT said maybe ditching the cane on week two makes sense. I told my PT those people need to sit down. I did ditch the cane after my first week. I felt so good last week, I over did it. Now, I’m using the cane again and taking it easy. Thank you Gary for these videos. They have helped me understand the healing process.

I’m a 56 year old female & just had my left hip replaced on May 3. I’m just about hitting my 2 week mark. Thank you for sharing your story. I had a great deal of pain but was afraid to take the pain pills because they make me so nauseous. I just took extra strength Tylenol & used ice packs to help with the pain. It was a real rough few days but I did get through it.(barely)
I’m still on a walker as well & have had a lot of knee pain & muscle tightness around my knee but I’m faithfully doing my physical therapy. Thank you for being so honest about your recovery . It is extremely helpful.

I'm glad you are doing okay. It is tough those first few weeks. But you are doing what you can and it will get better. I am now 3+ years post surgery and I don't even know I had the surgery other than my hip works great now. My knee hurt so much after that and the doctor said that the closest joint suffers when they do replacements since they have to pound that new joint down into the bone. It is a brutal surgery but they get it done. Hang in there and you will do great. I hope and pray you start feeling a bit better soon. Don't try to rush it like I did. Just let it happen at its own pace.

Gary THANK YOU So much for your honesty and full transparency. I just happened upon your video while laying here feeling like something must be wrong with ME because I'm not experiencing the same "fast" recovery as I've heard from others. EVERYTHING you said was like I was hearing myself. The pain was horrendous (getting better the past 2 weeks). Sleep was nonexistent (also getting a little better). And the meds make me sick. I too can't understand how anyone could get addicted- not judging at all, may God bless them. But I can't figure out what's worse, the pain and discomfort in my hip or the constant nausea, constipation and horrible feeling from the meds. I feel like I'm on a hamster's wheel. I'm 5 weeks in from a posterior right hip replacement and your video just gave me LIFE. Bless you! You are 4 years in. I can't wait for this ordeal to be behind me. I'd love to know how you're feeling now if you feel ok to share? Your story has REALLY helped me. I can see myself rewatching whenever I'm feeling down and defeated as I [was] tonight. Thank you, Again!

I am glad I can help in some way. I hope and pray you feel better soon. I can tell you now, that I am fully healed, it is wonderful. I can use my hip and get around without pain or limping or twisting. I don't even know I had a hip problem or surgery, other than the scar. I just went with a group of men from church on a retreat to a state park that has waterfalls. I still have to edit the video and get it uploaded but I went down to the bottom of the falls as a test of my new hip and my two new knees I got in 2022. The last time I went down was before surgery and it hurt to walk and also to go down rocks and rough trail. So I went this time and made it down and back up and then went and played softball. I can tie my shoes now where I could not reach them before. I'm not trying to push my videos but if you look in my playlist under my hip replacement or even the knee replacements I have a video showing some of the differences at the 2 to 3 year mark. Might give you some encouragement. But hang in there. As the swelling goes down and you have more therapy you will see huge improvements. It takes a long time for the swelling to go completely away but you will be moving more before then. If you are like me you will have to retrain your brain to not limp or twist so much. Take care and if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you for this video. It is spot on! I had a total right hip replacement on Feb 28, 2024 - a lateral incision. I was amazed that I could walk the first day, but did have pain. Like you, the pain meds made me feel nauseated, so after the first day or so I only take them at night if required so I can sleep better. Each day I think I walk a little better with the walker. I get very stiff after sitting. Can only sit for short time, then have to walk, but then get tired from walking and have to sit or lay down. I am doing my exercises twice a day and am up to 3 sets of 10 for each exercise twice a day. I have a lot of swelling, so I Ice and elevate my leg about 4 or 5 times a day and sleep with my feet elevated all night. ( I have an adjustable bed which has been great! ) My husband measures my leg at night before bed, and again in the morning, and in the morning it is an inch smaller than at night. I find I run out of stamina quite easily. Haven’t ventured out except the day I had to get my staples removed (at 15 days post op). I find it frustrating not being able do the little things, like picking up what I drop, but find the reacher has been a life saver. Also with the dressing aids I can totally dress myself. Will be glad when I can give up the walker.

Sounds like you are really doing well. It will definitely get better. I could not even touch my foot on the right side before the hip replacement but now I can bend down and grab my toes and lace up my shoes. The swelling goes down a lot at first but then slowly keeps going down over time. But you will me amazed when you get a little further along. Take care and I hope and pray you continue to do well.

      The surgery went well.
The healing of the wound is going well .
The walking is a bit slower process.
In 2011 there was a car wreck in which the right side of my pelvis was crushed and reconstructed so that's where we begin.
My Doctor told me he'd like to be able to tell me how things would work out but with the prior damage he couldn't, so we take it " as it comes".
I am walking, between the walker and a cane. Still on the walker more.
      God is gracious.
#1. He'd have been right to just have killed me and let me go to hell.
#2. Judging from the hospital records and x-rays from that time period there were many fractures of vertebrae from the base of my skull to the crushed pelvis.
a.) I should have been minus this right leg.
b.) Should have been paralyzed from any point within this spine.
c.) Could have had permanent brain damage and be a blithering idiot or vegetable.
This is not easy but it's okay and in comparison of what the Lord spared a lost, hell-bound (at that time) one such as myself, this is small beans.
      Thank you. @@GaryForgingOn

I am glad to hear the surgery went well. That is a lot of damage to deal with but I am so glad you are still here and able to get some things fixed. Hopefully this surgery will help you out a lot. All that damage to your back and skull and pelvis. I crushed a vertebrae in my back from being bucked off a horse and was lucky that I did not need surgery. Just a back brace for 6 to 8 months while it naturally fused together. But I always thought that could have gone real bad real fast. Praying for you and hope you continue to heal and improve.

Gary, like others, I'm so glad I found this particular video! I watched wayyy too many "superhero" videos so I expected to fall into that category myself! I don't know why, I'm a 68 year old not-in-great-shape woman who's been unable to exercise for at least a year - what did I expect!? Anyway, I had surgery on Feb 24 and am finding the healing process for me isn't a straight line at all - it's more like some progress, then a little setback, then back to some progress. Slow and steady. Plus it's only been 2.5 weeks; I guess it's just way too easy to fall into the blues thinking this will take forever. So glad you're doing well after hip and knees, and thanks again for this honest non-superhero video!

I had a spinal block & a block in my hip plus general as I didn’t want to be awake hearing it all!
    Surgery was around 2.5 hours
My surgeon was happy & said all went well
I did some research , so I came across a lot that were all good / easy
So I was very shocked to feel how I did
I wasn’t told till a few days before that I would be on crutches Which I am still on
started with a high walking frame first two days
Once home they sent me home with half the meds I was on …So I again fell into a heap , got very low
Pain become controlled with meds finally so I have been doing my physio 3 times a day and walking on the hour around the house
I’m keen to get outside to walk more and get off these crutches
5.5 years ago I had an Anterior L5 S1 spinal fusion , it was a big 2 part surgery but I was well medicated to start with so I feel I was off onto a great recovery because of this
My rehab was excellent and I have been so pleased I had it done
These two surgeries have been soooo different ( different surgeons as well )
I too have the knee pain and that knee does need replacement so it’s cracking a way
Very tight around the knee and quad , I’ve actually just been given the tip to use a massage gun , which I have done twice and it’s great 👍 I will continue that
    Wishing you all the best
    Thanks again
Happy recovery to you all 😊

Hope and pray you do well. I had this hip replaced in 2019. Then 6 months later in 2020 I too had a ruptured disk at L5-S1. It pushed into the sciatica space and on that nerve. They did the first surgery in the front after 2 months of pain and I instantly had no pain. So the doctor cancelled the second back surgery. I was glad of that. Then in 2022 I had both knees replaced 6 months apart. Sounds like you are following in my footsteps, which I would not recommend. :) Take care and feel better soon.

Thank you David. I appreciate it and I hope and pray all goes well for you. I will not sugar coat it and say it is nothing. I was told that the first couple weeks you are going to ask why you did this and it is the truth. But be reassured, it gets better. Just have to take the meds and do the therapy and you will get there. I have had both done now and glad I did them. My second one was last Sept and the first, the one in this video, was last March. I have playlists for both as I moved through the recovery. Take care and let me know if you have any questions.

It’s as if I was literally speaking in this video!
Just had my hip replacement a week ago today and EVERYTHING you’ve spoken on, I’m enduring.
I too can’t stand pain meds and have no idea how anyone could possibly ever become addicted to them. They are absolutely horrific! I will never be able to wrap my head around why someone would ever want to feel that way; but I digress. Initially, I was taking them, breaking them in half, and even doing that I was still getting sick at my stomach, even taking the nausea medication they prescribed so after battling back-and-forth three or four days of that I had to finally just stop taking them altogether, so now, unfortunately I’m not one of those people that is going through a total hip replacement, and having the wonderful feeling that so many people claimed to have because I’m feeling every single ounce of pain.
I know this video is four years old, but it was very helpful to hear that I’m not the only one who has had the same experience.

    • @GaryForgingOn

I am glad the videos helped a little. The pain meds were weird. I had both my knees replaced after this, in 2022. One in March and the 2nd in Sept. The one in March I could only deal with the meds for 2 weeks. Then with the second I went 4 to 5 weeks on them. Not sure why I didn't get sick. But still didn't like them. My doctor told me to double up on over the counter. Tylenol with Ibuprofen or tylenol with aleve. And that helped a little. He said I could take those together because they were different families but to Not take ibuprofen with aleve. Just a thought. You probably should ask your doctor about. I hope and pray you continue to have a good recovery. I can tell you it is worth it. I know this video was from 2019 but now I don't even know I had a replacement, other than the scar. It works great. And with the new knees I can move normal again. Take care. Gary

I went to some waterfalls with a church group and walked all the way down and back up and made a video. I still have to edit that video but I only did it as a test of my new joints. But you will have to deal with the pain and recovery for a while but it sounds like you have gone through a lot of that already. Yeah, I am not sure the Cats will get what you want if you send them to the store. LOL Just try to get as much ready ahead of time, which I am sure you are doing. Have some ice packs. they help along with the pain meds. And easy to fix meals. Hopefully you can get someone to drive you to therapy for a while. If you have any questions just ask. In the 21st century a Total Hip Replacement should only be performed using the Direct Anterior Approach. The anterior approach is more technically demanding for the surgeon, which is why many surgeons have not yet switched to this approach. This approach is considered a minimally invasive surgery to replace the damaged hip while avoiding nearby muscles and tendons. This approach causes less pain and results in a quicker recovery. There are generally no hip precautions necessary after the direct anterior approach, so motion is not restricted. Patients can return to work when they feel comfortable. This typically takes about 2 weeks. As a 75 year old male and an engineer in the power industry, the surgery was performed as an outpatient and I was home that evening on January 9, 2024. Used a walker for the first two days and then a cane for the following two weeks mostly for protection from falling and to relearn how to walk without a limp. Was active and back to work the following week and playing pickleball at 8 weeks. Was cleared from physical therapy after 4 sessions. Was already doing the exercises and riding my stationary bicycle before the sessions with the physical therapist. My biggest recommendation is to do at least 2 or 3 times a day the associated physical therapy exercises for several weeks prior to the surgery and for at least 8 weeks post surgery or in my case until I got back to my normal fitness activities. The ankle pump exercise should be performed even more frequently. I still do them frequently throughout the day. Also ice pack pads will be your post surgery friend; they should be used frequently on the area of the incision for the first 2 weeks after surgery.

Thank you waynebuff. I'm having anterior and was told due the recovery is far better less painful unlike posterior and lateral the approach cuts through the muscle hence more painful and recovery time. After reading Gary's and others experiences it's really put me off having it done atm given work commitments. I was hoping to be back driving and work by week 6....wonder now what to expect. But thank you for your input that's what I understood with anterior too.

You are so very welcome. I wish you the very best with your surgery and hope that your recovery goes as well as mine did. I drove to the fitness club two weeks after my surgery to watch my friends play pickleball and do a light upper body workout. It was my left hip that was replaced and my vehicle has an automatic transmission. However, I would have been comfortable driving after two weeks even if it was my right hip that was replaced and my vehicle had a standard transmission. Note that I did feel some muscle tightness when I reached to close the car door when it was fully open so I learned to pull it closer to me before I sat down on the car seat. The doctor instructed me not to play pickleball games until week 8 mostly out of concern of me falling. However, I was out practicing during week 7, with a friend that had a total knee replacement 4 days before my hip replacement. My post surgery check-up with my surgeon was at week 6. So there should be no problem with you driving and going to work by week 6. For me the most painful part of the process was the walk across the parking lot going into the hospital. Good luck. I am truly interested in hearing how your surgery and recovery goes.

I'm had a total right hip replacement on May 23, 2023. I spent two days in the hospital at my insistence. I had the anterior approach. It was supposed to be ambulatory, but I told the doctor that it was ridiculous to send a person home the same day of a major surgery. I had my left hip replaced on July 26, 2022, so I am basically the bionic leg. It has been quite a journey. I began physical therapy right away and complete my 10 therapy sessions today, July 3, 2023. The sessions were good and the therapist worked me very hard. My pain after surgery was minimal, and I was off the narcotics pain medication very quickly. Outside of the usual after-surgery discomfort, my experience has not been too bad. I'm 63 years old and hips were destroyed by old-aged arthritis. I think one of the reasons I've bounced by so quickly is that I worked out regularly before the surgeries, and I really that that has helped. I was cleared to return to the gym with a modified workout, and I can finally drive beginning the week of July 17th. My surgeon wants his patients to not drive for 8 weeks after right hip replacement. I've listened to several clips about hip replacements and the experiences seems to vary from person to person. My sister who is two years older than me had both hips and knees replaced in 2020 and 2021. She is better, but still needing walking assistance. After her first hip replacement, she needed a revision because her femur fractured, and that still causes some issues. I would say that everyone progresses at the rate that their body will tell them. Although I seemed to heal quickly, I fully remember that painful hell that I went through with my jacked-up hips. Now, I'm on to having lower back surgery. Before the hip went bad, I was in physical therapy for my back, but the hip rose to the front of the line. I don't have the hip pain anymore, but my back is a mess. I had five back surgeries when I was 12 years old, and I've had serious problems since 2014. Gary advice makes perfect sense. Do what that they you to do and don't overdo anything. Hip pain is not joke. I could not do anything. Although the pandemic was hell, I benefited from my job going virtual. I am a college professor and my college went online in March 2020. I actually was on sabbatical that was ending that upcoming June. I had just come off of thyroid cancer surgery (metastatic) and the subsequent treatments, and moving to online teaching was a blessing and Godsend because it allowed me to keep my employment and engage with my students. I'm still teaching fully online, but expect that I will add some on campus classes starting for spring semester 2024. Before the hip surgeries and current back issues, I could barely stand in front on my classes, so online has been a blessing. Good luck to everyone who needs a hip replacement.

I'm glad you are doing well. I was like you and could not stand for very long at all or walk very far. Now I can walk a lot and stand as much as I like. I was going to get my right knee done first and found out my hip was worse so they did that. I had rotator cuff surgery in 2018, Hip replaced in 2019. Then my lowest disk in my back ruptured into my sciatic nerve and i had to have that fixed in 2020. Took 2021 off. :) Then both knees replaced in 2022. 1 in march and the other in Sept. Now I can walk upright and straight and not limp. I can tie my shoes and touch my feet... It's the little stuff. I do computer programming and the pandemic helped me so that I could stay home and work. Which really helped when I was laid back for over 2 months with my back. Glad you are doing well. You will really enjoy it when all that heals up fully. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Hi Gary, thank you for your honest assessment to your hip replacement surgery. These first two weeks have been rough. I started with a positive attitude, did my PT home exercises, but somewhere in that week one i had a thigh and hip pain. Lots of swelling and bruising. (Mine was the anterior approach). Nights were the worse, sweating, tossing, calf pain, thigh pain even with hydrocodone every 6 hours. Then I watched a youtube like yours and he said he over did the exercises. So i backed off most of them for a day, elevated and iced, and then my pain began to reduce and the swelling is going down. Today is day 10 and i feel so much better. I'be walking with a cane the last few days instead of the walker (its there if i need it).
Getting up and down from sitting has been a challenge. And lifting the leg to lie down very difficult. Used leg lifter at first, not can raise and scoot the leg. Anyway you saying that those first few weeks are hard and the tips you gave me worked. So o appreciate that

Gary, your video is honest and, most likely, more typical of the majority of "older" people who have hip surgery because of osteoarthritis. I am in my mid-70, good health, and have always been active. I am now 11 days out from my anterior hip replacement and feel like you describe. My thigh hurts the worst, so tender like raw nerves and numb feeling. I am told by the doctor this is normal. I haven't taken the narcotics/opioids (afraid of them and their effects) only Tylenol throughout, thus enduring more pain. Like you, I also read, heard, and saw videos of people who are bragging about how there's little pain, and they're driving and walking without a walker after a few days. HUH?! So those "glowing" reports with rapid recovery make those who are recovering more slowly (probably more normally) feel like something is wrong with them or their doctor. Anyway, Gary, thank you for you honest and careful description of your recovery that is more in line with mine and I'm sure many, many others. It lifts our spirits and makes us feel somewhat relieved that we will get there just fine but more slowly. :)

    • @GaryForgingOn
      @GaryForgingOn  ปีที่แล้ว

That is very kind of you to say. I really appreciate it. You are doing well if you are only taking Tylenol. I watched a surgery on a hip replacement before I had mine and it made me realize how much damage they have to do to get in there and replace that joint. I watched a knee replacement before I had mine too and even though that was a tougher surgery to recover from it did not seem as brutal to perform as that hip. They did my hip before my knee and my knee was killing me after this surgery. The doctor said it would because of all the pounding they do to that hip joint radiates to the knee. But I had all that same numbness and soreness and bruising as well but it all goes away. Now 3+ years later I don't even realize I had the surgery other than the scar and I can walk normal. You will do great and feel so much better once it has healed up fully. Take care and I hope and pray all continues to go well for you.

I'm 48 year old had a total hip replacement on my left hip on Wednesday last week. Day two I was sent home. The pain was kept very well under control. I was given elbow crutches to walk with and shown the exercises to do standing and lying down plus working on a step. By the time I left hospital I could get in and out of bed and go to the bathroom and shower and dress myself without other help. I have hip precautions to obey also - no twisting, no crossing of legs and no bending past 90 degrees. I do my standing exercises on the way back from the bathroom and the lying down ones on getting into bed again and each need to be done 3-4 times daily. I do not like taking the medication as it does make me feel queasy. But lots of fluid and making sure I eat a balanced meal and get proper rest all goes with the recovery process. The surgeon will see me on the 2nd of April for my two week check and after that I may be allowed to return to physio. I believe that doing physio before my surgery has helped enormously. I'm looking forward to being able to not have to use crutches but I realise that this might be a while for safety sake.

Awesome video, I’m into week one right now and I’m feeling exactly as you described in in video. Felt much better knowing that I’m not alone. I had a shoulder replacement surgery a little over a year ago and I’m sure dealing with issues with it even after having a total of 3 surgeries for it. I will say the the pain from the shoulder replacement is child’s play compared to this hip surgery. Hip pain is absolutely terrible. I purchased a 5” toilet seat which has been live saving ..also a leg lift, which is nothing more than a belt like material with a loop on both ends..big game changer with the leg lift. Thanks again for your video..very helpful!!

I am so glad it was helpful. that was why I did these videos. I watched others and they helped me so I thought I would tell my experiences. Didn't have a shoulder replacement but did have rotator cuff surgery 11 months before this one. Tore 2 tendons off the bone. The therapist said that the shoulder was worst and I didn't think it was as bad as the hip either. That was a few years ago. This year I had my right knee replaced in March and am recovering from the left knee replacement I had in Sept. Yep.. Hip is bad and knee is worse. It is still just painful but it just takes longer. I hope and pray all goes well for you. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. My hip is wonderful now.. You will enjoy it down the road. Best of luck.

Only made it .46 of a mile total. The tendon that runs up near the groin area and runs up the front near my hip was killing me. Crazy thing is that I can do the elliptical with no problems…Stairs are just now possible with no issues. I’m thinking I just need to slowly get out break this hip in..little tough with the super cold weather and snow on the sidewalks.

I had my hip first and then my knees but with my knees I had soreness and stiffness for about a year. I had asked the doc at one of my later visits about the soreness and stiffness. He told me it would take a year and it did. My right knee I had done in March 2022 and my left in Sept 2022. I can really tell it now that my 1st knee has been over a year and my 2nd has not. I felt like my hip was way better after 6 months or more compared to the knee. The clicking in the knee seems to get better too over time. At least it mostly went away.. Or I am just used to it. ;) I am not sure if that is a lot of help but it sounds like it is normal to me anyway. I hope that helps a little. Thanks again and take care.

Best thing I did was to go through PT for a month before the surgery to get my hip flexors, quads, etc., stronger and that was the best thing I could have done. Was walking 1000 feet per day starting Day 5, 1 mile per day starting Week 3, and 3 miles a day after week 6. Got off Oxy Day 2 and went to Tramadol. Was authorized to drive after Day 21. Pain depends on approach , Anterior , posterior or lateral. Mine was lateral , more soft tissue and muscles cut , YES it was painful ! Anterior folks I know much less pain with that approach . but more risk , and less implant options ( stem length , socket etc.. ) has been 3 years now , feeling better still some pain in the greater trochanter area. In the end all 3 approaches same result after u heal . Best thing is get the approach done what your surgeon does most efficient. After u heal , soft tissue and muscle , u will feel better ! Best of luck !!

As much as I didn't like the medication, I tend to think it's better than suffering if you go off it prematurely. On day 14, I'm off the walker and using a cane. Sleeping well with a pillow between my legs. Still a decent amount of soreness but that sharp pain during the first 3-5 days is gone. It does take some time and time moves slowly when you're recovering. I'm an active 59-year-old but I've put my ego on hold and try and balance modest activity with rest and recovery.

I hope you get feeling better soon. I now have the new knees. :) A new hip and 2 new knees. It is nice to try to get active again and not always looking for the next place to sit and rest while on a walk or hike. Take care and thank you for watching and the comments. It is much appreciated.

No body told me about the bruising! that was a rough about 10 days. I am now 7wk. And walking in the house pretty much on my own. At 3wks I was back cooking because of a grouchy husband! I am 75 yrs old. I have lots of arthritis though.
Thank you! But I can walk. My hip was pretty much frozen with scar tissue.

I am glad to hear you are improving and getting better. Keep up the walking and physical therapy and you will do great. The bruising and the pain in my knee from the pounding on the leg were not fun at all. But they all get better. I hope and pray you do well.

Good luck brother. And definitely dont over do it. It really doesn't seem to help. At least in my case. Short term (I) may seem better and quicker healing , but 30 yrs later I can definitely see the effects of pushing the body to be more than it was designed to be. In the end it's really not worth it to get done a week or two early. Miracles do happen to some. That's what they said about my back. Your recovery was almost miraculous. But now it's a chore to get around half of what I used to. Let me tell you brother I pushed it like nobody knows. Do these exercises at this rate once a day. I was doing 2 and 3 times the reps advised and 3 times a day. Yeah I was ready to go back to work in 7 months instead of a year they original said. I dont think that helped me in the long run.
Of course everyone is different sirSir. I wish you all the best.
🙏 God bless you and may He guide your healing

Thank you for the Blessings and prayers. Truly Appreciated.. God is watching out for me even if I am not. ;) Those back injuries are soooo bad. I pray you get some relief. I crushed my L1 vertebrae in my 30s getting bucked off a horse and was in a back brace for 6 or 8 months. I didn't have to have surgery but it naturally fused to the one above it. Luckily I did a lot of stretching, situps and exercises that worked out the pain. But I am sure it will get me later. But I did too much too fast for my knee. I tore up in a motorcycle wreck in my 20s. But I didn't know I was doing too much because they told me it was just sprained and wrap it with an ace bandage. So I did and got it strengthened up and was fine. Then found out about 15 years later when it locked up that my ACL was gone and by then the cartilage was torn in half so they cut that out and there was too much arthritis and damage to fix anything. So now that is next on the list of new body parts. (wonderful) .... Take care of yourself and I pray you stay healthy and pain free.
      Gary

I'm glad the video helped a little. It will get better as that swelling goes down more. Now that it is all healed up I don't even know I had surgery. It just works great. Hang in there and give it time. I hope and pray your recovery goes well.

@@GaryForgingOn Thanks for replying Gary. The best part after the operation is that the horrendous excruciating arthritis pain has now vanished from my body. Feel like a new person! A little bit of swelling and I can even walk around without the crutches for a short while

@@stephaniefallows9611 It is nice to walk without that pain.. I just got back from a theme park with the family and walked and stood all over the place without any problems. Training my brain to not constantly look for places to seat all the time along the way is now the hard part. :)

Hello Gary I just now found your video. I’m like you I want to get back to do what I need to do ASAP. I’m into my 5 week left hip replacement. I watched other videos about hip replacement also. I like your honesty answers more than the other videos. Thanks for your advice 👍

Thank you so much. I am 3 weeks tomorrow for a right hip replacement. I have the IT band that is bothering me and alot of fluid in the right knee and calf. Most of my pain before surgery was in my knee. For the 1st week.i had no pain in the knee, but I feel the fluid is the problem. Hopefully that will clear up.

I hope and pray you feel much better soon. My right knee was hurt and damaged way before my hip. I thought they would replace it first but the doctor told me they prefer to do the hip first, especially if they are both on the same leg, because we feel hip problems in our knee. That would eliminate pain felt in the knee from a bad hip. But after the surgery my knee was killing me. The doctor said it was because of the pounding of the joint into that thigh bone radiates down into the knee. It took it a while to stop hurting in my knee. It gets a lot better. Just takes time . Now I don't feel anything in my hip. Like I never had a problem. Hang in there. It will get better.
