    Wow, I’m glad I found this video today. I’m 5 days post-op and this dude is totally my spirit animal. I too got caught up in all of the videos of people running marathons a week after surgery (not really, but…), and here I am still trying to find a way to sleep comfortably and manage the soreness & swelling. This video really sums up the experience for many of us in an honest & relatable way. Thanks!

      Thank you. I'm glad it helped. I finally hit the turning point after 2 weeks but that first couple of weeks was rough. I hope and pray you do well and have a great and fast recovery.

      I absolutely also fell victim to the one week postop videos. It’s just a façade. 11 days in and I am just really starting to feel comfortable walking without a device swelling is still pretty bad but they said that this all takes time to heal. Good luck on your recovery.

    The physical condition you are in before the surgery is paramount to your recovery, absolutely vital. I am 68 and I was a jogger and not overweight (5'9" 160 pounds). Guarantee when you hit 3 weeks you'll start to see improvement day to day. I had total right hip replacement and was home same day. Two days with walker, two days with cane and then on my own. Never had pain that wasn't manageable with Tylenol the oxycodiene made me sick. I'm NO superman but if you are overweight its going to slow things down greatly. Schedule your surgery two months out and start walking and try to lose some weight. It's critical.

      I hear what you are saying BUT just to be an encouragement to other people like me...I am 70, morbidly obese, basically sedentary for years as I had a desk job all my career. I had my surgery a week ago tomorrow. My hip replacement surgery ended at 9:30am. By 3:45pm I was on my way home having eaten, walked, climbed stairs, etc. to prove I was ready. I took one opiod pill that night to sleep. Haven't taken another since. Went to first therapy session on day 4 having been doing the hospital recommended exercises each day and walking every hour or two with my walker. I sleep through the night taking only tylenol. I ice 24/7 and swelling is in my thigh and hip only and is minimal. My point is simply this...every patient is different. Just because you didn't come into the surgery physically fit it doesn't mean you'll have a rougher time than anyone else. Is it better to come in fit? Of course. But take heart my obese friends, it can still be a manageable recovery.

    Thank you!!! It is good to hear a real person During recovery. I am nine days out, and I don’t feel like I am progressing that well. I still have a painful walk and I also prefer walking with the Walker rather than a cane. A couple of days ago I developed a little bit of drainage from my incision which scares me. I still have my stitches in, I mean, staples.I also have a painful calf and swelled ankle and foot. Anyway thanks for your testimony. I hope you got well quickly after that and thanks again.

    • @GaryForgingOn
      @GaryForgingOn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for the comment. Please get that drainage looked at soon. That sounds scary too .
      I got so depressed by the 2nd week because I heard all these stories from others how they were walking miles and back to work after a week. I tried to get off the pain meds too early and had to get back on them. I also was doing extra PT at home and when I told the therapist how I was down and not knowing why I was still on pain meds and a walker after 2 weeks she got on me to not listen to others and to not push my recovery. So I took a few days off exercise and got instantly better. Then I improved in leaps and bounds. I did only what they told me.
      I am loving my new hip now and can walk great.
      But I guess in the next year or 2 I will be making more videos on getting my knees replaced.
      Hang in there and I pray you have a full recovery. Give the pain and walker another week or more. But please call or email the doctor.
      Gary

      @@johnonethree sometimes it takes me a few days to see a post but I always try to reply. I was leery of making these update videos on my surgeries but I watched several before I had mine and I hoped I could help someone else out a little like others helped me. They were very helpful when I had my rotator cuff repair 11 months before this hip replacement. A lot to prepare for with a rotator cuff ahead of time and afterwards.
      One thing I forgot to mention before on your lower leg hurting. My knee, which is bad anyway, was killing me after the surgery and I asked my surgeon about it at my next visit and he said that they have a saying in orthopedic work that whatever joint they work on the next joint to it suffers. It is because of all the hammering and pounding they do to put in those prosthetics.. That punishment radiates down into the other parts of the body. I hope that helps, even though it sounds bad. But that pain went away but it was there for a while. I can't remember how long though. But just know it will get better over time. Keep up the PT work. I am a firm believer in PT. After 3 unrelated surgeries in about a year and a half I had a ton of it. ;)
      Thanks again and please let me know how you are doing.

    I just wanted you to know i just had my total hip replacement done finally. The Hydramorphine they have made my stomach so upset had night sweats and now I'm just icing my right hip and only Tylenol. They wanted me to go home the next day. Ya right. Tomorrow i hope to be going home it's my third day
    Finally feeling a bit better. I have to be feather weight bearing on my hip for 6 weeks very hard. I lost my voice to due anesthesia and having the tube but getting better. Hopefully on road to recovery. I don't have bone on bone pain anymore so I'm happy about that. 🙏

      I hope and pray you continue to heal well. It is tough at first but you will improve and it does get better. I now don't even know I had a bad hip or a surgery. I stayed one day with my hip. Both of my knees were outpatient. I stayed overnight but it was less than 24 hours. I guess the insurance doesn't want to pay for extra days. You will enjoy the pain free movement later.

The leg is still a bit tender, but I am using a cane only when I'm outside and the walker only for shower transfer. I've been up and walking a mile each day (three shorter walks) and there is almost no pain. The only pain is like you said when raising the leg for bed transfer. Thanks for your honest testimony.

    I’m on day 3-my temp is 99, incision hurts a bit. The aspirin I take every day upsets my stomach. I have a nurse who comes everyday to change dressing and also a physical therapist. This isn’t a whole lot of fun.

    • @GaryForgingOn
      @GaryForgingOn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it will be painful for a while. The physical therapy and meds will help. They gave me stronger meds and I was on those and a walker for a couple weeks. I tried to get off my meds within the first week and it did not work. By week 2 I thought the doc had messed me up and my surgery but it was just all the swelling and I was doing too much extra physical therapy than what the therapist told me to do. So I just did what they said and after a couple weeks things started getting so much better and faster. Now, 2 years later, I am loving my new hip. I can walk without twisting and limping. But probably next year I will be making more videos on getting my knees replaced. I heard that is worse than the hip.
      I hope you can get better pain meds than aspirin and some relief but just know it will get better but it will take a few more weeks. Then you will be walking great.

    3 days after anterior..
    Only taking acetaminophen. Haven't needed the narcotics.
    Day 2 was the worst, but not too bad. Had a slight fever which is gone today. Some swelling.
    Feel better today and slept better last night.
    Sleep with my leg elevated on a pillow. Can now turn onto my side. A leg lifter strap helps alot the first day or two, but I can now get out of bed without it.
    The exercises are important.
    No problem walking unaided, but still using the walker for now, due to tightness and pain.
    Knee is a little sore, but I understand this is normal.
    I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
    I wouldn't say recovery is easy, but the improvement is much better than the chronic osteoarthritis I had, which only gets worse.

    • @GaryForgingOn

      Hi Sabrina, I pray your surgery goes well. I love my new hip. I was twisting and limping so much before the surgery that my right leg (one with the bad hip) was getting smaller and weaker. I always blamed it on my bad knee. But now I can walk straight and without a limp and I feel great.
      My biggest problem with my surgery was listening to other people on Facebook that went through it. So many told me they were back at work in a week or walking miles right after surgery. So I thought I would be that person too. After a few weeks I was still on a walker and my hip felt like it was sticking out of my side a foot. And I was still on pain meds. I was working out doing my PT harder to try to get well sooner and was literally getting depressed.
      I went in to PT and told my therapist and she got on me saying I was 1. doing too much and 2. everyone heals different. So I rested from my home PT for a few days and started feeling better. Then everything started going great and my therapy went great. I did what they told me to do and only what they said.
      it was weird because it was like a switch turned on. After the first few weeks or so of pain and trying to recover it got better a lot faster.
      I am not sure how your leg is but after the surgery my knee hurt as much or more than my hip. I told my doctor that and he said there is a saying in orthopedic work that whatever joint they work on the one closest to it suffers. The amount of pounding they do to drive that part down into the thigh bone radiates down into the knee. But it got better too after a while. I only regret that I waited but I had to wait a year anyway because I was going to get mine replace in 2018 but then tore my rotator cuff out and had to get that done first.
      Please let me know how you are doing and if you have any questions. You will do great but give it some time to heal and do all your PT as they tell you to and don't be dumb like me. ;) Take Care

    Sounds like you're doing well now. Do you recall what surgery method they used to do your hip replacement? Anterior, Posterior or Lateral? Good friend of mine just had his right hip replaced using the Anterior method (no muscle cutting) and he's done great. Swelling and pain the day after surgery, which he iced. He's also had some bruising, but he's been walking around and already started some physio. My left hip needs to be done (sever osteo arthritis with some osteophytes) and likely will happen next spring. For now, I'm exercising it with some weights and stretches and it's responding well.

I can walk without twisting and limping and no more joint pain. It took a while though. Was definitely not something that healed up in a few weeks or even a few months but it gets there. Hello Gary, my father is having his left hip replacement surgery on Friday and he lives alone. I’ll be flying home to look after him but only for 5 days. His house has steps everywhere, driveway to front door, garage into house, steps into the kitchen and a flight of stairs to his bedroom. I was going to keep him in my hotel for the first 2 days for a quiet environment and that is step/stairs free and then take him home and stay with him there and get him acclimated. I plan to have a hospital bed delivered to stay on the first floor for a week or so. I’m wondering if I should forego the hotel stay and take him directly home to avoid getting him in/out of a car a few times? Thoughts?
    In terms of supplies, what do you recommend? I sent him a robe, Velcro pants, a leg lifter, a grabber to pick up things, some pillows, ice packs, toilet risers. Anything else in terms of personal care, clothing etc that would make life a little easier? Thanks!

      The day of his surgery he will be walking in the hospital with physical therapist. They will make him get in and out of a fake car and go up and down steps before he leaves.
      My opinion is to take him home. He needs to start getting used to steps. Especially in his house because he will be dealing with that for 3 or 4 months. And they will start him on PT the day after he gets home. I had to go to PT but don't have it at their home. I just think you helping him more at home longer might be better but that's just a guess on my part. It sounds like you are doing great on preparations. I hope and pray all goes well for him.

      @@GaryForgingOn - many thanks for the detailed and sage advice! I need to double check on the PT after surgery as the surgeon said it isn’t necessary but I disagree.
      One more question, where did you find that you sat the most after, chair, bed, sofa?
      Thanks again, much appreciated!

      @@angelam5013 that's a first for me, never heard of a doctor saying physical therapy is not necessary after a hip replacement. But maybe there is s a new procedure. I'm just a patient recounting my rehab.
      I sat in my recliner most of the time. The first week or so was tough getting in and out of bed. Raising that leg. And we have a normal height bed. Not a raised one. Ice packs help but are tough to get on that hip but if you can that helps some.
      I had bad knees when I had my hip replaced. Since then I had both knees replaced too. But after the surgery my knee on that leg hurt a lot. The doctor said it was from all the pounding they do to hammer that new joint down into the bone. It eventually felt better. Just letting you know your dad's knee may hurt after the surgery too. And there could be a lot of bruising down the leg. As my doctor said, it is a brutal surgery. I sure hope they have some kind of different procedure now that makes it easier on your father.
      If I can answer anything else don't hesitate to ask.

    any recommendations on what I can gift someone who is having this surgery soon? things that will help with healing weeks 1-3

    • @GaryForgingOn
      @GaryForgingOn  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a tough one. Most of what they will need are the meds and going to therapy. They will get or have a walker and later a cane. My guess would be a gift for them and whoever is taking care of them. Like my wife had to help me a lot and drive me to therapy and things like that so we would stop and pick up food a lot of times on the way home because it made it easier on her. I would think gift cards for food they can pick up or take them food. Something like would mean the world to help them. We have a group of ladies at our church that take food to people that are sick or had surgeries or a loss in the family. They brought us food and it was a huge relief and blessing. Anyway, I hope that helps a little. Coming from a guy that had a hip replaced and both knees replaced, a gift from someone meant a lot to me any my wife. So anything would be greatly appreciated.

    I’ve been looking at your videos . I’m a week post op and Idk how I feel honestly. I’m 39 I had a TLHR due to AVN. I have asthma and have been on steroids since child hood and the meds have cut the blood supply off to my femoral head. I have it in both hips only the left collapsed. I was in horrible pain I ended up on crutches for support to walk even so still in horrible pain. The pain is gone now I do know that but I can’t get my foot in bed my husband has to help me. I’m on my walker and I do see all these stories of how people walk without devices the same week! HOW?? My leg still is very week I guess because I feel like I don’t have much control of it. Almost how it was when I had my kids and had an epidural. I mean it’s not as bad I have more control now, but it’s like I want to move my leg but can’t. And I don’t know if it’s my weak muscles from surgery or my mind since I haven’t used this leg in almost a year due to the pain. I can move it of course to put one foot ahead of he other as I’m on the walker I guess I’m getting worried, I know it takes some weeks for the bone to grow into the implant so Im not even worried about putting to much weight on it. I’m feeling sickly because of the pain meds and all he other meds I just want to get some what Better to feel like I have some hope. Gary you definitely give me hope, Vanderbilt is a awesome hospital I live in TN so no doubts hey did their part. Just hoping to make some sort of turn around soon. A lot of people have me thinking I’m not healing well at 7 days from the videos they put online walking so fast afterwards , and here I am with not much leg control 🤦🏾‍♀️

      Hi Tiffany. I hope and pray you are doing well. If you saw my 2 to 3 week update video on my hip, I talk about how I was in total depression because I thought I should be like all those other people too. I was still on a walker and pain meds after 2 or 3 weeks. I live in TN and had mine at Centennial. I was doing my PT at Smyrna hospital. I told the therapist there how I was depressed and doing extra exercises at home trying to get better faster. She got onto me for 1, listening to those people and 2, for doing too much. She said it takes time and for me to not rush it. I started feeling better that week. Probably more psychological than anything.
      It hurt so much to get my leg into bed. It felt like my hip was about a foot outside of the correct place. I thought the doc messed up. But I talked to the doc and he said I was healing great and to give it time. He said that hip replacement is a brutal surgery and it takes a while to get all the swelling down and get it all healed. I don't even know I had a bad hip now. You will do great. Stay on the meds as long as you can tolerate them and do the exercises and you got this. Praying you continue to heal and please let me know how you are doing and if you have any questions just ask.
      Gary
      PS. I had my hip in 2019 and I just had both my knees replaced in 2022. It's been a lot of surgeries and a lot of pain. But walking without pain is great.

    Hi !!!!! Is life good or not so good with your hip now after these 4 or 5 years later? An can you do squates with weight on that hip or no? Im prob getting a hip replacment in a few years they way its going ugh... 👈👈👈👈👈👈👈👈

    • @GaryForgingOn
      @GaryForgingOn  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My hip is working great now. I don't even know I had a problem or surgery. But between my bad hip and my bad knees I was not able to squat at all for years. Now that they are all replaced I can squat down further but I have a lot of strengthening to do in my legs. My right leg, from the bad hip and bad knee, got down to almost half the size of my left leg. But as far as squats with weights I am not sure. I would check with the doctor when you go for a visit. I have heard with my new knees that I need to avoid jump rope. But I am doing good just walking down stairs like a normal person now. LOL But I do not regret the replacements of my hip and both knees. The pain is gone and I can bend down and put on my socks and shoes now and not limp when I walk. I hope your surgery goes well. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

      @GaryForgingOn  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes, I had pain sitting and trying to lay down. I just stayed on the meds. Trying to get up and down from a chair and lift my leg a little was also painful. I tried to keep ice on it as much as I could. I hope you are doing okay. It is rough for a while but it is worth it in the end. Hang in there.

    I relate to your comment about hearing others say that they were walking well really quickly. I had mine 5 days ago and, like you, cannot take the strong meds. They make me feel sick, drowsy, and give me horrible constipation. I was very fit when I had the op and of normal weight - but it has been tougher than I anticipated (or maybe I just expected too much of myself). How long did it take before you started to feel more 'human' again?

    • @GaryForgingOn
      @GaryForgingOn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. I was expecting too much as well. By the second week I was getting depressed. I was doing extra exercises at home and going to therapy and trying to get off the meds early like those others said. I ended up back on the meds, still using a walker and hurting for the first 2 weeks. The next weekend I was down. I went to therapy Monday and my therapist asked how I was and I just told her I was depressed. I was doing all this work and everyone else got better quick and I was still on a walker and pain meds and I was getting major depressed. She got on my case and said everyone heals differently and to not listen to those people and that I was doing too much exercising. So I took a couple days off home exercises and it was like flipping a switch. I felt better, I could do more, I got off the walker and meds. I hit my turning point at about 2 weeks. Maybe 2 weeks and a few days. So please don't get discouraged, do what the therapist say and let it take its course. They told me and the Doctor told me that everyone heals differently but by 6 weeks everyone is at the same point. I know what you mean on the pain meds. I had to take them with mild of magnesia and everything else. It was miserable but I got off them after those 2 weeks. I hope and pray you do well and please let me know, if you wish, how you do. I have a playlist of all the updates from my hip replacement. If you go to my 2 and 3 week videos you can see the progress. I am in the middle of a knee replacement now. I didn't hit my turning point with it until almost 5 weeks.

      Sorry, I just saw this. I had the hip replacement 2 years ago now and it is great. It was bad the first couple weeks mainly because I listened to others that said they got better instantly. And I was doing extra home exercises to increase my healing. It doesn't work that way. But at the 2 week mark I hit the turning point and it was much better. It might be more or less for you. But it was worth it.
