Pretty much my experience as I’m 3 weeks post op with THR anterior style. 69 and in good shape, walked a mile with the dog yesterday and felt it last night. Ice therapy about 4 to 5 times daily and keep it loose by moving every hour; walking around the house or light exercises. Tylenol n aspirin pain therapy since day 3; don’t like narcotics and constipation that comes with it. Goal is to walk 9 holes at 12 weeks! Hope my golf game improves too but it’s always a good walk.

I had Anterior Hip Replacement Surgery on Aug. 11 early am.
That night l woke up with a horrible Rash around my surgery incision. It was extremely painful, itchy, and sensitive to anything touching it!
Doc put me on Prednisone for 7 days and Rash came back again!
Back on Prednisone for another 7 days plus Extra strength Cortisol cream (l went thru 3 large tubes, No sleep now 14 nights!!
I had no Aide but my neighbor took my dog out for me every day.
I was house bound over 50 days.
I finally got rid of Rashes and began PT homebound.

I had my left hip replaced 10 days ago. My walking experience is very similar to yours. I can currently walk with no cane, and drive (just to PT), I have muscle pain in my leg but as you say it is to be expected. The Doctor and Hospital videos make it sound like easy surgery, but really, it's quite the opposite. They cut open your hip, retract your muscles, dislocate your hip, saw off your bone and stuff a titanium rod in your femur! And then there is the freezing medicine, anesthesia, morphine, fentanyl, antibiotics, and oxy. It is quite a trauma on your body. I still take Tylenol and have trouble sleeping, but it's only been 10 days! PT is rough. They are assertive. This week the surgeon will remove the bandage. I don't anticipate any issues. I am very excited about my hip no matter what. The old one was useless. Thanks for your video!

    • @FrankGuest
      @FrankGuest  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Everything you said about the surgery is correct. It’s a very intense procedure. That said, I am so happy I got it done. Your 14 days post operation now. The trouble sleeping at night and soreness around the incision will persist for a while. But it will get better. My hip is 3000% better now than before the surgery.

@@lizstromsnesdolz629 It is a tough recovery. You must keep moving in order to get better but it hurts. Your body has to figure out how to work with the new hip. All your leg muscles have to learn how to work after being manupulated. My knee hurt for a few months after as well. It will be 2 years next month. It's all good now.

My surgery started at 7am I was in recovery at 8:30 and released by 10:30 after walking with my walker and doing the steps. I walked unaided two days after my surgery and the hip felt good. Hi Frank, Thank you for taking the time to make these posts. My name is Pascal. Small world! I just had left leg anterior hip replacement on 14 Nov 22 in Sydney Australia. Im 45 and had started the whole hip op journey at 40 like yourself , I also wanted to wait til i was at least 55-60 yrs old but it was clear that wasn't going to be an option. Like yourself i ride but the hip developed osteo arthritis on its own, no falls ,crashes,in fact not a single thing trauma wise up to 40. I did a lot of Thai boxing in Thailand since my early 30's and have always been active but not a good enough reason for it to happen. Just a genetic predisposition type of bad luck. One surgeon said the formation of the femoral heads had shapes that were destined to annoy the acetabulum and eventually cause wear and tear. Watching your first video brought back my first week in an instant. Almost day for day identical. However after 4 days in hospital recovery i was lucky to get a full week as in patient at a really cool private rehab center called Walper, insurance covered that. So my second week was really easy as i had meals done, meds organised , physio and hydrotherapy twice a day and a lot of rest and icing. Felt a bit spoiled but paid a bundle for everything so why not. Managed to attach my ps4 for some guilty gaming and hours of streaming! Im now on a single walking stick and will head home Thursday 24/11/22. then i will do my own rehab at home and visit the center just twice a week. Your dead right, daily work and getting moving again is vital for a quicker recovery. I actually stopped all pain meds, had palexia instant and slow release, both stopped since Tuesday 22nd. No Pain but definitely feel discomfort after too much time on feet. Rest, panadol and ice fixes that but i think ill use something stronger on and off when im at home. I've got nothing against meds, just didn't like the fog it created in my mind. Your clip was informative and very encouraging, kinda wish i documented my op as well to help motivate others. I might get that chance in a few years from now as the right leg ,although really strong and pain free ,is unfortunately diagnosed with grade 3-4 OA!!!! We decided not to do a double as the right leg is currently doing perfectly well. Im kinda glad about that but you still wonder if a double is better in the long run. Ill keep watching your progress videos. Something tells me your right back on that motor bike and pain free these days, i can only dream for that time to arrive and get back to riding and if the universe allows it back to surfing. Did you manage to improve those dance steps? lol All the best from down under. (more of an essay than a comment i know)

I'm 12 day post surgery. Noticed the difference immediately after the surgery. I could barely move, before. Any movement caused me to whimper. On first putting my weight on the new joint, I couldn't help but smile. So much better. Now, I have to work on strength because the muscles are so weak from non-use during the last two months of excruciating pain. I'm ready for the work. Also looking forward to replacement of my right hip, which has also been hurting, but not nearly as much as the left one had.

My 61 yo wife had anterior THR surgery 5 days ago. She is in good health and very active, even with the bad hip, injured in a car accident in her 20’s.
Surgery went smoothly, but she had significant pain in recovery. They quickly got it under control, and she has been recovering nicely. She gets up and walks around about hourly, sometimes over-doing it a little, but she is learning her limits. She is showering, dressing herself, and going into the kitchen for drinks and snacks with her walker and attached carry pouch. She has had no trouble sleeping. She has not needed the Oxy except at night.
From my perspective, it has been easier than expected, and I think she would agree. For those in pain considering the surgery, I say don’t worry, go for it.

Mostly nausia and not sleeping at night but worked that out with ginger and short sleeps during the day. I get up every hr to walk a bit. Not too bad considering. My pain is the stiches and swelling around it but today starting day 5, im feeling more relief in general moderately that is.Thanks for your video. It is helpful and a guiding light! Had my right hip replacement Oct 2024 in the UK and by the NHS. What is important is context. My arthritis was so bad (both hips) that I was using walking sticks and virtually housebound for 2 yrs before my surgery. This meant my muscles, core strength and physical activity were zero. Had anterior approach and spinal anaesthetic. Up using walking frame and washing/dressing myself next day. Pain was managed but in any event was nothing compared to pain I had been living with before. Discharged home 2 days later with equipment to use at home. I live alone and had no care or support provided. Had to give myself stomach injections and wear compression socks for 28 days to avoid blood clots. Was given handbook on discharge from hospital physio with graphics of exercises to do 3 times a day increasing number of reps etc. I was using 2 crutches for 2 weeks then down to I crutch for further 2 weeks and then down to 1 cane for another 2 weeks. This was due to time it took me to build back muscles and stability to be able to fully load bear and walk without a limp on my operated side and ditch all walking aids. This took 6 weeks in total. I am still going up stairs a step at a time relying on the handrail and am working on being able to walk up/down using alternate legs on steps. I was off all pain meds and paracetamol use by week 3. In summary great success and pain free full mobility for my right hip. I am however waiting another 12 months to get my other hip done to give me time to fully recover from what is major surgery. Luckily my left hip while bad is not as bad as my right one was so I can take time. My advice is your recovery timescales need to reflect your condition prior to the operation and your level of motivation to do the post op exercises consistently. I was in about the poorest level of pre op condition you could be in and so a realistic timescale is 6 -12 weeks for me. It takes 6-9 months for the hip prosthetic to fully embed with your own bones as well. Good luck to all on this journey it is worth it!

Keep in mind the recovery from 0% to about 80% happens quickly. (At least for me) That last 20% could take up to a year. But I think you will find that at 80% recovered, you will feel better than you do right now. I was surprised how quickly I started resting on my new hip. I never did that before. I always leaned slightly to the right side while standing. Now I don’t even think about it but lean towards my new hip. But please Listen to your doctor and be careful with your new hip.

I appreciate this post! I just had my 2nd outpatient anterior hip replacement on September 20, 2022 in the md / dc area where i live and recovering now.. My first anterior hip replacement was Jan 2016.... Eight days later i am almost off the cane, anterior method is a miracle! Dealing with typical pain and swelling now as this is normal progression. I'm a glutton for punishment and I've been taking only 500 mg of Tylenol every day now and no oxycontin yet! Last hip replacement, same approach and i did not take one painkiller which Is not always a good thing! I'm 56 and was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at 32 y/o. Xray showed deformity in both hips, paper thin cartlige and doc said i only had a couple years left max and options were risky given my lifestyle and the posterior method was the only option.... this was horrible news but it motivated me to prove this doc wrong and timeline, which i did and let him know 17 yrs later! He did not do the surgery as the anterior hip docs are specialized and choose one that has performed lots of them. I was
very athletic growing up, played lots of sports and have now been in the construction contracting business for the past 27 years and also very hands on. Hips were always stiff and sore my entire life. In other words I've beaten the shit out of myself and thats ok, i have no regrets! Anterior approach worked the best for me and good luck with yours!!!

    Thanks for sharing.
I had a right THR in 2019 at age 60. I was able to drive one week post-op. I used only one crutch on day one and then a cane (umbrella) after day six. I started PT after ten days and biking on the 13th day. I started biking regularly after that.
I was never in any pain that required meds. I experienced only transitory discomfort.
Biking allows me to strength train my hip similar to weight training in a gym by gradually increasing duration and intensity without risking injury. I usually let the hip rest for a day or two between bike rides.
Three years and nine months post-op, I have no mobility or pain issues and no activity restrictions other than that I have not resumed long distance running.
My orthopedist says that I may resume running if I want, but he recommends that I run in the grass or on sand and not on a road. He advised me, however, that the “manufacturer” does not recommend running.

Hello Sir from NJ! Scrolling around youtube while reliving some youtube research memories on my June 10, 2022 right hip replacement and came upon yours. I can relate definitely to your video. I was up and walking within 4 hours of the surgery (with assistance from a walker) with PT and OMG I was amazed on how far I was able to walk. Getting over the initial "wonderment" of even standing up straight was crazy! At 72, I finally decided to go thru with it. My surgeon and staff were amazing - oh yes - thru the butt too. Pix are available upon request. lol. 2 weeks of visiting PT and OT and then 6 weeks of PT at my local hospital - they picked me up 3 x's a week. Actually drove to PT the last 3 weeks. Keep up the good work. Rehab and exercise is key too!

My new hip is much stronger then the one I came to earth with. Thanks for watching!

I wish I had seen this video prior to my hip replacement.
I am 71 years old and had a right anterior hip replacement one month ago. My recovery has been close to the recovery in this video. I am getting PT 3x/week by my choice so that I can regain functioning ASAP. At present I can walk 1/2 mile with relative ease. I started riding my bike a week ago. I rode my bike 4 miles today without pain but this was pushing my endurance. I do fatigue easily and naps help after exertion. My flexibility is improving and it seems there are gains every day. The worse pain was approximately 5 days after the surgery and lasted several days. The surgeon warned me about this with the explanation the the local anesthetic would be wearing off around then.
This video was very realistic in my experience. It seemed that most videos described a much slower recovery with greater activity restrictions. The fastest recoveries seem to be with active athletic people with the anterior approach. The posterior approach has a slower recovery with greater activity restrictions.

Great video Frank! Watched the entire video and as others have mentioned it's reassuring to see your progress from pre to post-op. When you mentioned the thing about the doctor telling you to wait because of your age it brought back what I was told four years ago. I was 48 at the time (albeit much older than when you were advised to wait) and now I'm 52 and ready to have the surgery. One of my doctors said that I'd, "know what it was time". Well, the last six months have been terrible. My advice for anyone considering hip replacement is to not wait until your basically crippled like me. I'm not sure about you, but when I finally made the decision, it took me 4 months just to set up various appointments and my surgeon's schedule was out several months. My surgery is scheduled for 7/8, but I think I decided in January it was time. I naively thought that "when I knew it was time", that I could get surgery that month, not that it would take months. Did you experience similar delay in getting scheduled? I think it was also great that you mentioned that even several months out that you're still recovering. A lot of materials make it sound like a 4 to 6 week recovery, but it sounds like a slow progress. Thanks for posting the video! Very inspiring!

    • @FrankGuest
      @FrankGuest  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

When I finally decided to have the surgery, it was scheduled almost 4 months out. So I had to wait as well. My recovery was pretty quick. I got to 70-80 percent quickly. And that 70-80 percent was so much better than the pain I was in prior to the surgery. Getting to 100% from 80 took several more months. I’m at 11 months post operation now and I’m 100% recovered. I have my year update appointment with my doctor in July.

Had my right hip replaced via anterior almost 3 days ago and just found your inspiring video - thanks so much! I’m striving to achieve the goals that you conquered. I had a helpful head start - 3 months of hip exercises nearly every other day and practice last week walking up/down stairs with a cane, in/out car & bed with leg lifter from a hip kit I bought. That helped tremendously, as doing basic things was easy post op despite the pain. Been doing laps around the house with the walker until the pain hits 5-6 on the 10 scale. Overall, feeling very positive so far.
Frank, what impressed me the most is that other than the gym cycle, you didn’t have formal PT post op. Other videos I’ve watched had more structured or formal PT for the first weeks. My surgeon advised no PT other than walking for the first 4 weeks to give time for bones to adhere rather than risk compromising that, and after 4 weeks, formal PT. I’ve been skeptical about this, but after seeing how your recovery went w/o PT, I’m encouraged! I’m going to cheat a bit and do some light range of motion stretches anyway as I progress, but will hold off on anything that can pull the new hardware out of place and trust my surgeon’s advice and nail the PT in 4 weeks. Will check back and let you and followers know how this goes.

Again, thanks for sharing your journey and tips. I’m progressing well, almost exactly as you did! At day 4 I went from walker to cane. By day 7, just barely tapping the cane for balance while walking. By day 10 - no more cane for walking and per my smartwatch my stride length and speed about 75% of normal. Just using the cane up/down stairs for balance. At day 14 - walking without cane up/down stairs and no longer two feet per step. It hurt at first, but this opened up my range of motion considerably to the point where I can now reach down enough while standing to get my pants on. Still have swelling, stiffness and pain that’s manageable with Tylenol and still numbness on outside of quad running down towns knee, but my surgeon says that’s normal at this stage. Wound was checked at day 14 by surgeon’s PA, and it’s normal at this stage.
So today is day 16 and I’m very encouraged. My new right hip coming along well. With the better ability to lift my leg I now have, I’m going to see if I can drive again, being as cautious as possible of course. The next hurdle will be trying to sleep on my side. Too uncomfortable up until now, but with better range of motion, I’d like to make that transition, as I’m still not sleeping well.
Thanks again Frank as I’ll continue to monitor progress relative to your timeline and take note of your tips.

Thanks for this! Just an FYI, I took NO narcotics after my surgery. Just Tylenol 3x a day and Maloxicam (and baby aspirin for clotting) I iced my leg throughout the day and kept it elevated most times other than walking around for ten mins every hour. I had pretty much no pain, swelling or bruising. I also wasn’t eating any added sugar or flour (quit a few weeks prior to the surgery) which I think helped. I am in decent shape so that also probably helped but wanted to pass the info on to those who don’t want to deal with pain meds and withdrawal or addiction worries. I have two friends that also only did Tylenol so that was encouraging. To avoid pain meds, Ice and elevation will be your best friends :) altho I know everyone is different. I did have it on hand just in case but never needed it.
    But thanks again!

@@FrankGuest Thank You.... My friend Bob,... better known now as Bionic Bob... grin faired very well. He was out of the hospital and home the same day. He had robotic surgery... Its amazing how things have changed since I worked in the OR in the Military, 1972 VietNam. He did not have sutures, but was super glued shut. I recall back in the day, that was just becoming a new process... Its cool. Hope all is well with you to my friend. Keep smilin.

I'm 47 and have been told I need a hip replacement. Even though I have been told that this is a highly successful surgery, this video has been really helpful in confirming this. I'm resigned to the fact that this will improve my quality of life but I'm nervous all the same. The last major surgery I had was almost nine years ago to have a c-section birth for my youngest child that almost resulted in my death! I never imagined that I would need a hip replacement but I had a fall when said youngest child "ran me over" on her bike! It aggravated the arthritis to the point where I'm now using a walking stick to help my gait be more normal. Thankyou for taking the time to share your experiences. Pre op exercises are super important as are post op as the muscles need to be really healthy for best recovery.

Thank you so much for sharing. I have been reading n watching a lot on hip replacement to help me decide which approach is the best. I already had in mind the anterior approach after researching about it. I have seen orthopedic surgeons both in the Philippines n Kuwait where I both live. So far in the Phil one doctor said posterior n the other one lateral so I am more confused. In Kuwait there are few doctors who do the anterior approach and that’s why I am flying there after Christmas to consult with one doctor who is famous for this. Watching your video helped me decide to do the anterior. Hopefully everything goes well with me. I am 67 and was born with not so good hip bones. Aside from the hips I am also candidate for knee replacement. All because of osteoarthritis. There are some bad days but mostly still the pain is bearable. Again thank you. Reading all the comments gave me more knowledge n first hand experiences from others.

Omgoodness I watched this and looked at my husband asking “am I doing something wrong?!” Because I’m 17 days post op and I’m still swollen and in pain. I can’t put full weight on quite yet and use a combination of Walker for distance walks and the cane for stairs and short trips. I have a knee problem same leg no one wanted to look at till after the hip replacement still. But with therapy they are hoping it fixes itself which is doubtful because I’ve had 3 knee surgeries:(. My hubby always says “you should have rode motorcycles versus playing sports all those years!” Because he has had zero surgeries to my 10+ in my lifetime!

Did my exercises and after two weeks walked with a cane.I hated those damn compression socks😅
Sleep on your back, don't cross your legs, raised toilet seat etc. Made a t bar from the ceiling to pull myself up and out of bed. All worked out well.
