6 months here. Same surgery, same disc. I am not pain-free, but it seems like I'm slowly getting better. My biggest issue is I still can't bend without pain. Still mild nerve pain when sitting as well. It is somewhat discouraging when I hear all these success stories. Just wish I was normal again. I exercise every day. Walk every day trying as hard as I can.

I had the same surgery and a year or so later sneezed and re ruptured the disc, imagine the pain about 5 times worse. I was not even close to lifting weights or enjoying life. Ended up with a fusion and that is way worse than discectomy. Better but still fighting back and leg pain. Backs are so bad when they start going or disc exactly.

@@margiesimmons-cohn426 What is crazy is my wife has started having sciatica in her right leg, I took her to my surgeon he had her do an MRI yesterday. I can tell from the MRI she has a disc herniation at L5/S1 but waiting for her next visit with surgeon to tell her if she is going to have injections or discectomy. I am going to have her try injections first. They gave her a medrol or prednisone pack.

I had L3 Laminectomy Surgery in July of 2022 and now I was having pain again and had a CAT scan done and now have a bulging disc L4-S1, I never intend to have screws and rods put in which is what they do with Spinal Fusion so I am looking into this. I'm happy for you to keep going even when you have no support, I'm 42 with four kids ages 26, 24, 22 and 20 at 42 and I am on Disability now and not because of my back but I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and it got to where I couldn't climb upstairs or do my job as a truck driver because of losing balance, cognition issues and strength issues and I am by myself and raised my kids alone but they are my support and I look to God throughout all my headaches in life and he is my rock I can always lean on, God Bless you and your family 🙏❤️

my 67 year old wife had a laminectomy on l4/l5 on july 24. 18 days ago. what a nightmare! she was advised that she would be in the hospital for 1 to 2 nights. the surgeon "nicked" her dura during the procedure and she was in the ICU for 3 days. then moved to a regular hospital room for another 5 days. then moved to a rehab hospital for 10 days. she's way worse than before the surgery. she has intense pain. 60mg of oxycodone a day + 2 doses of morphine, dilaudud and gamupentin. can barely walk from a chair to the toilet with the aid of a walker or a wheelchair. is having thoughts of ending it all. the doctor is an arrogant uncaring ass. she missed her 2 week follow up visit because she was in a rehab hospital and the office can't make time to see her until august 20! still has the bandaging over the wound with a softball sized bruisebelow it and over her butt crack. she was sent home yesterday and our life is a living hell. can't even sleep in her bed due to the pain. this happened in Fort Lauderdale. if you need to know who NOT to use, just ask.

After nearly 30 years of discomfort and at times debilitating pain I'm tired of the cycle, constant pain at any level is exhausting. Before surgery I couldn't, sit, stand or lay down, I was in excruciating pain and then fully lost feeling below my waist.
Last week I got diagnosed with Cauda Equina Syndrome & got rushed into emergency surgery (UK).
I spent 1 night in hospital, I walked a day after my surgery.
So far I'm in pretty much 0 pain and stopped all painkillers nearly :) I also have full feeling back below my waist.
Super scary surgery but so life changing 🥰♥️

Seeing this video gave me some sanity back in my life with the incredible anxiety I have been experiencing with a pending microdiscectomy. I have been driving myself crazy asking is this the right decision, but I did the conservative route for an L4/L5 very large extrusion. Got to the point at 6 months where I could almost get back to normal. As soon as I got back to normal and increased activity The shooting pain and burning came back. This time I am having total leg numbness and unable to lift my toes when foot is flat. Was recommended surgery as the MRI shows the original herniation is actually larger and causing a lot of impingement on the nerves. I have been losing weight prior to all this and am currently down 95lbs with the goal to get back down to the low 200s. With the large herniation any really physical activity it appears will flair it up and put me out of commission for months at a time, not an ideal living situation for myself or especially my family. I am looking to get back to being active with my kids and your video gave me some confidence that it is possible! So thank you for posting this!

Hi Trey! Great, that this surgery completely stopped all the pain.
I had problems a few years ago with pain on my right buttocks side going down my right leg, no accident though. I could not sit long anymore, and standing for a long time was painful too.
I had scans, and even though it showed that I had L5-S1 plus a few other bulging discs, the 5 doctors I did consult all told me that this is age related, and wear and tear, no need for a Operation at all. The last doctor I consulted mentioned that it could be that the S1 compresses a nerve slightly, but that this would not amount to the pain I was experiencing. After a lot of physical therapy, and exercises I did on my own, but not really finding long term relief, a neurosurgeon suggested to try epidural a few times to ease the nerve pain. I decided against it, because he could not tell me that this would help 100 percent, plus, I have NO high pain tolerance, and unless you put me to sleep, there is no way they can do a procedure on me while I am wide awake. :)
I still have the right sided nerve pain, but it has eased within the last year. I am curious (since your dad is in radiology) what he thinks about multiple bulging discs, and if they should be operated or not. Avoided surgery so far due to being scared of the operation, but also because the doctors tell me, it is not something that need to be operated on. Your story about the keyhole operation and how easy it was makes me think to perhaps pick up that topic again and just have a consultation with a neurosurgeon. Thanks for the video!

Had L5/S1 microdiscectomy and laminectomy about 9 months ago. This was after having "an event" where it felt like I pulled my hamstring and calf and it felt like someone just tightened my leg without really doing much. I was told to do PT, that helped (or maybe it didn't, it's hard to tell). But I never got back to 100% and the tingling/numbness and tightness never fully went away. The most noticeable thing was the constant spasms and occasional cramp (typically after some sleep). The surgery seemed like it worked until about 3 months after and all the same symptoms came back again but worse and more frequent. What did I do? I was sitting up straight at my desk. I did more PT and it really seemed to MAKE IT WORSE. Even though the PT was pretty mild in terms of what I was actually doing. So now I'm back in the same position. Do more surgery or just deal with the pain? Possibly a nerve stimulator? Post op I'm in worse pain than I was before, so this can happen. I really doubt the stats out there on this stuff that say 90% of people get better by doing nothing and 90% of microdiscectomy are successful. Guess I just won the lottery...twice.

I had this microdiscectomy surgery a few years ago at L4/L5 and re ruptured the disc again 2 years later and had a fusion and that did not fuse so I had a revision fusion in 2023 and I feel 90% better now. My wife had back issues that started in Dec of 2024 and then the leg pain started off and on for a few months and bam the leg pain got worse and MRI showed herniated disc at L5/S1 so she had the MD yesterday woke up feeling very little leg pain and back is a little sore but hopefully on her way to being in a lot less pain or pain free. Surgeon said she had a big disc fragment he removed, took about 45 minutes for the actual surgery. We were trying to decide on epidurals or just doing the surgery and out Neurosurgeon said based on symptoms and what he saw on the MRI she needed to do it or eventually she would need it and it might end up worse. Also said the sooner you do the discectomy the better chance of getting those nerves back. My first back doctors had me waiting and I still have numbness from my left knee down to my foot. Its funny if i lift anything over 30 pounds or so my leg goes numb almost immediately or if I jog. It doesn't hurt though so I would recommend the MD if symptoms keep you from sleeping or doing normal things and the MRI shows a disc fragment or herniation.

My question is- I’m still having sciatic pain (nothing as severe as pre-surgery, I could barely walk prior to surgery) but they tell me that inflammation needs time to subside and/or the nerve root needs time to heal. I am walking daily as much as I can. Did you have any residual nerve pain after? And if so, when did you notice it being gone? I’m anxious, like you, to get back to running, lifting (eventually, I’m not rushing into lifting) and I’m wondering when I’ll finally start feeling like myself again without any nerve pain

@@margiesimmons-cohn426 the epidural was worthless for me. Pain kicked in as soon as I left my doc’s office. I would try it out, but honestly the epidurals were more painful for me than the actual surgery itself.

You must have had a bad neurosurgeon doing the epidural. Mine all three times were pain-free and provided a lot of relief

I had 4 or 5 of them. The pain was minimal, but they really didn't do anything. I stopped doing them. I have seen 2 surgeons other than my neurologist and neither one of them seemed eager to do surgery.
After the flare up I had tonight I have to find someone that can give me some relief. I was on the floor doing my PT exercises because I was having a mild flare up. When I was finished I went to pull myself up and I was instantly knocked back down on the floor screaming in pain. I had to lay there for about 30 minutes with my wife doing everything she could to help. My hands went numb for a few minutes and I began to have uncontrollable tremors throughout my body starting with my left leg, almost like a seizure. I was also having spasms in my back and legs that with pain so intense it almost brought me to tears.
I am 35 and have lived with back pain for nearly 15 years. It has always come in flare ups that happen by making the stupidest small movements, rarely from lifting something heavy. I have manageable constant pain an the flare ups come every couple of months. Most of the time I can still work through them, albeit it's very difficult. Once every year or 2 I have a really bad flare up though. This one currently being by far the worst. I have never been completely unable to walk until now.
I have not really wanted to get surgery before because every doctor has said that the success rate would likely be pretty low. But I think it is time now. I will likely have to talk to a couple of new doctors to find one who will do the surgery and be confident in the results. I can't keep living like this. I feel like I have a very high pain tolerance, but tonight I felt like a scared baby. My body is completely drained. I finally was able to get up and sit in my computer chair which is always the best place for me when I am in pain. I don't even know if I can make it to the bed tonight or if I even want to.
Sorry for the random rant on a comment that has little to do with this. I just started typing and it kind of got my mind off the pain for a few minutes.
