After eating 1,000 or less Kcal/day for 20 years, and unable to lose any weight, I stopped dieting and began walking for an hour a day, 6 days per week. I lost 35 lbs. in less than a year, without making any other changes. My annual blood tests are the healthiest I’ve ever had: high lipids, high blood sugar - all gone. If the weather prohibits outdoor walking, I do an hour’s no-impact aerobic dancing at home instead, using my dance playlist. Easy!

This! After having my thyroid removed due to cancer, I gained 9lbs and can't shake it off. I was working out hard for 1.5 hours/5 days a week and did intermittent fasting. I still couldn't lose, and in fact I gained 2 more lbs. I realized my cortisol must be messed up and switched to 1hr long leisure walks in the woods just to clear my mind every day, and eating 3x/day again. And I felt my weight start to go down. However, I'm back at work and only walk about 3-4 times a week and my weight is still the same. For me, I think I need to focus on calorie restriction and these walks, because my hormones are at play.

@@RavenStealstheNight I completely understand you. The weight is like glue on me. I have been an avid exerciser for nearly 30 years and have always been slim, but the loss of thyroid (and aging) has changed everything. I find the walks/hiking amazing for my mental health as well.
In terms of diet, I eat healthy but everything is about portion control for me and sustainability of this long term. Since the loss of thyroid, I find it extremely difficult to eat 1200 calories a day to lose the weight, and feel more comfortable eating around 1400-1500 calories. But that doesn't help me as I can't lose weight eating 1400-1500 calories, despite exercise.

Oh, no! So much misinformation here! Intermittent fasting is NOT meant to go on for days. I do intermittent fasting for a medical reason: insulin resistance. I eat three meals between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. I start dinner at 5:00 and have four courses: soup, salad, a main course of meat and vegetables, followed by some cheese and fruit. My schedule is somewhat flexible. I just try to stay with the 8/16 hour guidelines. Following a medical doctor's advice.

There are so many different types of IF not just the extreme 2-3 full days of fasting. I’ve been doing a 16 hour fast with a eating window between 11-7 for the past 6 months with great results. I am 51 years old and slowly started gaining weight that I could never lose. I’ve lost 25 pounds and have kept it off so this way of eating works for me to maintain my weight. It prevents me from snacking throughout the day. I eat 2 complete healthy meals and am not always thinking about food. It’s a lifestyle change for me, not a fad diet.

Intermittent fasting is 16 hours of fasting and 8 hours in which to eat. I am not a morning person and have no appetite until noonish, so for me it works. It keeps weight off and I am healthy. I have been doing it most of my adult life before I knew it had a name. I eat my first meal between 11:00 am and 12:00 and finish my dinner between 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm. I do not snack between my meals except for a piece of fruit. After dinner I brush my teeth and floss so I won't be tempted to eat. It's not hard to maintain. I don't feel it is restrictive at all. The big plus is that it gives your body time to repair cells, etc. and not constantly working on digestion. It's closer to how our ancestors ate. It may not be for everyone, but for me it works.

I do intermittent fasting - but not extreme - I usually eat between 10.30-11am and stop around 6pm - combined with calorie control it works for me - if I am trying to lose weight I cut right down on carbs and sugar and eat more protein - I don’t do low fat anything as sugar is public enemy number 1 - not fat!

    With all due respect -
Intermittent fasting is NOT synonymous with dieting. While people do, at times, use it to lose weight, it is a far broader, more involved, complicated subject, with a growing body of study and research having to do with HEALTH. A great deal of information is available on the web, if you wish to know.

    • @heddazucker4115
      @heddazucker4115 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

But again, with all due respect, “good” is a loaded word here. Information and opinions are changing constantly. There is so much more regarding this subject that deserves to be acknowledged. Addressing it simply as not “good” or one’s belief is, well, ...... I prefer to leave a blank here.
Research scientists/medical doctors and others are studying this for decades. This is not a fad/fashion/or just an idea.
Also it isn’t limited to one people/culture/country. This is not NOT French.
Of course, you’re entitled to your opinion. But I believe people deserve to know that there is so much more to know here.

Marie-Anne, I think you have mistaken that intermittent fasting is starving for two days. I never starve myself. I eat at 12pm and finish at 8pm. Or 10am and finish 6pm. I love my food and find this is a discipline I need. What you are suggesting is exactly intermittent fasting. No food for at least 12 hours and eating carefully and not over doing it. Congratulations Marie-Anne on your videos. I very much enjoy them.

I am not overweight but have been intermittent fasting for some health goals and what I’m doing is not extreme. I fast 16 hours and then eat for 8. What that looks like is I finish eating dinner by 5:30 pm, don’t snack and then eat breakfast at 9:30 am. During my eating window I eat normally, maybe slightly more. I focus on nutrient dense foods. It feels good and is not extreme.

That is the definition of intermittent fasting I see most often. No food after dinner, eat 3 balanced meals within an 8 hour window. I have a 10 hour eating window : finish dinner around 6 pm, breakfast around 8-9 am. That is intermittent fasting and I have done well with it. I never skip a whole day. I'm doing it to prevent insulin resistance from progressing to diabetes, which is prevalent in my family. At age 64 , I remain slim with normal blood sugar levels.

    • @megangoldsney8214
      @megangoldsney8214 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Totally agree. I've thought of restricting more but honestly I begin to binge when I feel too hungry so thats another risk. Better to find a fasting window that is actually sustainable. 12-16 hours is totally doable and keeps insulin low. I also imagine most French people each low-glycemic index foods (non-processed) so that also allows them to eat 3 times a day without becoming insulin-loaded.

I have a family member who is almost 80 and he came off of his diabetes and blood pressure medication by doing a 16 hour fast every second day. He wasn't overweight and my aunt and uncle probably eat the highest quality food out of our whole family. But they always used to eat supper very, very late. If they hadn't done that, he probably wouldn't have had a problem.
Some people call this 12-16 hour fast "time restricted eating" rather than intermittent fasting. Regardless, I do think it has therapeutic uses. I don't know if the concept needs a fancy name, but snacking is so encouraged in North America these days, that not eating after supper is not common sense anymore.

Omigosh I can feel your passion on this subject and I feel the same way!! I am totally against intermittent fasting too, since as you say, the length of time between dinner and breakfast is enough of a fast!! Plus IF creates the mindset of ‘miracle solutions’ and using special tips & tricks to lose weight, instead of cultivating a sensible, natural approach: eat mostly healthy foods, in smaller quantities than most people are used to today. The thing is, people are addicted to unhealthy foods and to large portions - they should focus on breaking those addictions by learning to cook or choose healthy foods they love, and learning to be satisfied eating less. I’ve had weight issues for years but my weight has finally been stable for the last few years by just 1-eating mostly healthy, 2-not overeating, and 3-regular exercise. It’s hard to break bad habits, I know this intimately, but it IS possible - and a life without heavy restrictions is so much happier and less stressful.

@@MarieAnneLecoeur Bonjour Marie-Anne. Thank you for your response. I am not trying to argue with anybody about the efficacy of fasting. It has scientifically proven benefits. I heard about intermittent fasting years ago but I never actually understood the guiding physiological principals behind it. Once I read Dr. Jason Fung's Obesity Code (Canadian nephrologist), Dr. Bert Herring's book (family medicine specialist) and Gin Stephens' books (has a phd in Education and she laid out the governing principles and scientific research results regarding intermittent fasting) I was convinced. I have been living this lifestyle since March of this year. It is not "starving and binging" but, in fact a sensible way of healthy living with a benefit of weight loss. It is NOT a diet. Fasting allows your body to heal itself; stimulates autophagy and is . As you pointed out your body is already fasting and "breakfast" is breaking that fast. The time-restricted approach is just having a longer fasting window which can be anywhere from 14 - 24 hrs followed by an eating window. Nobody will be starving by skipping breakfast. In fact, many, many people are already living this life by simply skipping breakfast and having black espresso or coffee instead. Nothing crazy about this. At any rate, I challenge you - who seems to be an intelligent, thoughtful person - to actually read either the books or articles (or watch the some videos) by the mentioned people and decide whether they are advocating a "fad diet" or something that is a lifestyle with a solid scientific foundation. I appreciate the cogid reality of what you advise. If diets worked, we'd all be slim. My husband is a physician and he always advises moderation and exercise-exercise is wonderful treatment for just about everything. Good for the body and the soul.
That, and acceptance. Aging brings change to the body-in what we are capable of and what adjustments we have to make to accommodate the impact of time. For me, at 71, accepting the loss of being young and beautiful is made easier by working harder to be wise, kind, loving, and involved. You've got to work harder to be in life-things that are harder in a less flexible body, but possible and worth the effort.
    Whew! Lots of thoughts.

I feel healthy intermittent fasting can be a wonderful way to eat. There is scientific evidence 16 to 21 hours of fasting has positive results not just for weight but insulin and glucose levels. I agree that you need to be informed and it doesn't mean you can eat processed foods, sugar and empty calories when you do eat. Diabetes is of epidemic proportions around the the world. Every time you eat you raise insulin. Unfortunately we all can eat to many "healthy" foods.

Hello Mary Anne. I see your point. But, I've read extensively the research of Jason Fung, a medical doctor who promotes fasting to repair damage in the cells and lower inflammation that often leads to cancer. I live in United States and I grew being told breakfast was most important meal of day, even if you aren't hungry. Big food in U S has pushed sugary cereals, breads etc under guise that its breakfast and they've made a fortune creating chemically-ridden foods...much to the detriment of the obese in US :( I don't eat after dinner and breakfast is when I get hungry, not dictateed by a clock. I'm still slim at 54 and attribute that to intermittent fasting and omitting sugary food. I feel bad that the US 🇺🇸 doesn't push the correct way to eat.

I have done 5-2 for 6 years and it helped me loose 15 kilos. Menopause put 5 of them back on, but it helps me control my weight. I eat sensiblly. Small portions, lots of greens, try to avoid unhealthy fat etc. I also try to exercise as much as possible. Doing this means that I can have cake and wine in the weekend. It makes me feel good. 5-2 is not total fasting. I get 500 calories per day (on the two days of “fasting”). I get good food with few calories.

When I saw my internist a couple of weeks ago for my annual exam, he recommended intermittent fasting. It was so strange because, right before I left my house for the appointment, I watched a video on intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting is generally a fast of about 16 hours broken by the first meal of the day and then eating within an 8 hour window. But it doesn’t have to be those exact number of hours. I fast for about 14 hours because of my schedule. I basically don’t snack in the evenings and eat breakfast an hour later than usual.

I do a type of intermittent fasting: I find 5a.m., when I wake up (with no alarm clock!), is far too early to eat. So I dress and do make up, meditate and do small household chores. I only have breakfast around 9.30a.m. a SOLID breakfast, protein and fruit, and I take my time. Even though I live alone, I set my tiny table and sit down to eat, slowly! (Usually watching the birds feeding on my patio) my next meal is mid afternoon, after my studio closes for the day. I eat fish and mostly fresh vegetables. Then I spend 2 - 3hours at my piano!!! I also drink mostly water during the day, year round. This system works for me and is giving me incredible energy - but when I am asked out for a meal, I eat whatever I like but only small amounts. Works for me....

Thanks Marie-Anne for your view on intermittent fasting, however I'd like to say that a two day fast is not the usual intermittent fasting method. There is much research done on the benefits of 'IF', which basically means fasting for 16-18 hours. Not two days. For example, if your last meal was at 8p.m, your next meal would be at midday the following day. Some people prefer breakfast and lunch, and will skip dinner, depending on their lifestyle. I have been intermittently fasting for the past 15 months by missing breakfast, and it suits me. I am much more mindful of the quality of food that I eat for my other two meals. I have not been sick in all the time I've been doing this, and I lost 15 kilos. I don't recommend this to anyone who is not prepared to eat quality food. Anyone who thinks they can consistently miss a meal and then gorge themselves on chips and pies for the rest of the day...now that's crazy! 🤪

Without changing a thing! 4 pounds in one day, then 3 more, then 2 8 tried working out more! I am diabetic and have been told by my doctor to do intermittent fasting as a way of controlling my blood sugars. I am suppose to eat between 10 am and 6 pm only. There are times, that I do have to adjust the hours due to earlier appointments but the idea is suppose to keep my eating within an 8 hour time frame. I am not doing it for weight control strictly for carbohydrate and blood sugar control. I am not overweight. I am finding my sugars to be lower so maybe there is something to this program for diabetics. It was my doctor who brought this subject up, never did I consider doing it until she told me. If my blood sugar goes low, I have to eat a carb snack to increase it then watch it and possibly eat a protein again to stabilize it. It is not an exact science but being diabetic has taken the joy of eating away. It is just one more thing to do in a day.

Unfortunately intermittent fasting is being lumped together with the latest diet trends that come and go and are often unsustainable and long term, unhealthy. Intermittent fasting goes well beyond 'just another weight loss trend'. Try to be open to the deeper reasons for IF especially when combined with better food choices such as healthy fats and very low carbohydrates, especially those from grain sources. High blood pressure, diabetes Type 2, most importantly it addresses insulin resistance, oxidative stress and inflammation and much more. Autophagy is activated at around the 16hr fasting time (however 18 hr plus up to 24 hrs to maintain autophagy and increase its benefits is advised). The mTOR response is inhibited during this time as well....which greatly influences autophagy.
To truly understand, one should dive into the scientific literature and understand it. Fortunately I can, and fortunately authors such as Dr. Jason Fung can explain the various types of fasting and health benefits very well for the general public. Intermittent fasting is not new, however eating 3 meals a day is a development of 'modern times' and the industrial revolution in relation to human existence. As a little example, farmers went to bed rather early, got up before dawn to feed the animals and by the time they 'broke fast' had well reached 16-18 hours of...intermittent fasting. It is not a trend.
Fortunately for me, I am never hungry in the morning so it is easy for me. Also lowering my carb intake helped me get over insulin resistance (a pre step to diabetes) lowered my blood pressure, cured my hypoglycemia and occasional inflammation of the joints. Oh, and a side effect was losing and keeping off 15 unwanted kilos. At 71, I am as fit as I was in my 30's.

I do exercise with weights & walk & keep active. Feel great, blood work great. It's not a diet. I never feel deprived. I eat as much meat, bacon, eggs as I feel full to eat. The only carbs I do eat are berries an nuts, tomatoes/onions for garnish. I don't gain weight. My body knows where I'm supposed to be. It's not a diet, I love what I eat and never feel deprived. Check out Dr. Ken Berry also. So many cardiologists are realized that grains and most carbs are the culprit for most diseases. But everyone to his own tastes.

I totally agree! Eating well and exercising is the key. When you don't deprive yourself and allow yourself a treat once in a while, you don't crave for it because you allow yourself things you love. Restrictive diets never work because you would have to keep doing it forever. Who wants to be on a diet all the time ? This is all just good common sense to me. The part I agree with you on is to be careful if you are going to be participating in an extra strenuous activity that you are not used to. Then you can break the fast because as you said you don’t want to get lightheaded. I always carry a protein and nut bar in my tennis bag in case I get hungry. @@MarieAnneLecoeur I rarely feel the need to eat that bar because I am used to participating in strenuous activity without eating breakfast. I’ve probably broken my fast 3 times this year so I rarely snack. The problem for me with a light breakfast was that it would raise my insulin, because anything you eat will raise insulin, so by mid morning that insulin spike would make me hungry again and I would then have another small snack. I was on a merry go round of eating all day and being unable to stop because of my insulin spikes. I now rarely feel hunger in the morning. By the time I eat lunch I am somewhat hungry and enjoy a nutritious meal. In an ideal world I would eat as you say but the reality is that I didn’t have the willpower to overcome the hunger effects from the insulin spikes. I am happy that you do have that willpower but for me fasting has given me back control over my appetite and lowered my blood sugar.

I will add that fasting is not new. It is talked about in the Bible many times. Gluttony is a sin and fasting and prayer is one of the ways we can help fight sin. I also find that saying grace before we eat makes us more cognizant that food is a blessing and is not to be abused.

Salut Marie-Anne, you are the voice of reason, your reactions are so good because they are based on good sense & deep scepticism of this newest fad. Enjoy good food in moderate proportions at meal times, sitting at the dining table with family and friends. Otherwise, wait until your next meal before you eat again. Can't fault your advice!!

How funny, I’m as passionate as you about the dangers of intermittent fasting, and I saw a lot of myself in you as you spoke your reservations about it. I have several friends who got into it a couple of years ago. My first remark to them was exactly what you said: we already fast naturally during the night for 12 hours or so! Then one of them even told me that sometimes their binge eating after a 16-hr fast is at night! I’m 59, have managed to keep my weight down just by choosing what I eat and keeping them in portions. This in itself is not easy to do because I love to eat. But as you say, enjoying meals and mealtimes is essential for living well in every sense of the word. I have hypertension and am pre-diabetic, but my chosen “regime” works quite well. My recent blood works attest to that. Thank you again for this video ❤️

As someone who struggled with anorexia as a teen/young adult, I am wary of recommending any special diet or fasting. I could see this getting into the mind of someone who struggles with eating disorders, and just be an excuse for them to continue. I do think fasting has some great benefits. I find I feel better when I don’t snack throughout the day and eat at regular times. I think in general we just need to learn to listen to our bodies, eat slower, and stop eating when we are full. It’s quite simple! But it’s not always easy!

THANK YOU for this! It's so nice to hear someone speaking common sense about this fad. Intermittent fasting is nothing but crash dieting and skipping meals, yet so many people look back on people who did this in the 80s and say they were foolish. It's exactly the same thing. Especially for women, fasting can be quite dangerous.

I agree with you, Marie Anne... we fast overnight. I believe strongly in eating breakfast to fuel for the day, and then I eat clean 3 or 4 more times to maintain an even blood sugar level throughout the day.

Excellent video. As a child, raised by parents who grew up during the depression, we never ate after dinner with very rare snacking during the day. As an adult I got away from that. As I noticed some weight gain, returning to what is called "the French way to eat", those extra pounds came off and best of all, improved sleep. It is a lifestyle that is maintainable. I hear intermittent fasting defined in the US as that 12 hour window of fasting - actually it seems to just be sensible, maintainable eating. 💕
