Thank you so much for doing this video! I have a 2 gallon Vanilla that I am still using from 2020 and just added more vodka and vanilla beans. NOW I have 1.5 gallons of Almond Extract started!!!
Love this. We grow sweet pit apricots and for the ladt couple of years my husband has saved large numbers of the pits. Of course he never got around to cracking them so now I have a great use for them! Awesome video and great info.
Thank you for the great video. I’m curious : why not just put in a good amount of apricot kernels and leave them for 2 months with just enough vodka to cover them ? That’s the recipe I’ve been told to use so I’m wondering what the advantage is to switching them out like you do?
Love all you videos! I find that when you squeeze the liquid out of the milk bag your extract will end up cloudy. You need to just let it drip out for a few hours for a clear liquid! Remember no squeezing 😊
@@BiancaJinson-s4l good question. My thoughts would be it depends what the teabag is made from. If it was your normal store-bought teabag that’s kind of like paper I would be concerned it would break down in the extract. Maybe causing some undesirable flavor and pieces of bag, then you would end up still having to strain it.
@@brelsfordfamilyhomesteadI think the ones I have are cloth, I think it’s worth a try. Also thank you so the video! Loved it. Did the extracts have the strong almond smell?
@ You’re welcome! I’d love to hear how it turns out for you ! I wouldn’t say the smell is really strong but definitely noticeable over the still present alcohol smell. I really enjoy the extracts ❤️
I liked both of them and both had a good almond extract flavor. I don’t think you can go wrong with either. I’m making another batch using the butter kernels but it’s not quite ready yet.
Is there a reason you do a half cup at multiple intervals versus just using 1.5 cups at once for longer? Just curious because I haven’t seen it tapped out in 3 week intervals before. Thx in advance
@@nickhare4088 I’m not sure if there would be any change having g the bag left in or not. You leave the final one until it reaches the taste you want. Happy extracting !
Since you left the skin on the nuts did it make your extract bitter ? I blanched mine for 1 min. then put in ice water & the skins just slid right off. My extract is still "steeping" so I don't know yet how it taste. I used white rum. Thanks for sharing your video.

Thank you! I’m almost done with the bitter apricot kernel version. I’m going to do a side by side taste test when it’s done.

Can you crush the kernels before roasting them?
@@lisagrafton2529 I would assume so, I’ve never done it that way. Let me know how it works out for you. Thanks for watching!
Could I put the crushed kernels in a tea bag initially, to avoid straining? I can just remove the tea bags?

Is there a reason to smash the roasted pits vs breaking them down with a food processor?
I’m sure that would work. I don’t know of any reason it would make a difference.
Can you please tell me if it tasted more like almond extract with the rum or the vodka. I didn’t hear you say.

I followed someone else’s proven method so I don’t know all the science/reason behind that. It turned out great.
Can you use bitter apricot kernels?
@@pattyberes6072 yes, you can use bitter or sweet. I’ve made extract with both. Thanks for watching!
Couple questions. 1 why don't you just leave the seeds in the bag in the alcohol. 2 can you leave final step longer then 2 months. Like maybe year.

How many total ounces of kernels did you use and how many total ounces of extract did you end up with?
I used 1.5 cups of kernels per batch and ended up with approximately 7 ounces of extract.

No, it’s not bitter at all. I’m almost done making extract with the other type of kernels and it already tastes good.
Hi! I'm wondering if this will work with almonds? Or measurements will vary
@@pipocadoce97 you could do it but apricot kernels are in the almond family and are what is typically used for almond extract.
Do you have to roast them?
Yes, the recipes calls for putting them in the I en for a bit and then cracking them.
On an extract making page they say it doesnt work. The extract smells wonderful but gives off no flavor in recipes.
Maybe they needed to let it extract longer. I love mine but do prefer the batch made with bitter kernels verses the sweet kernels.
You need a mortar and pestle!
@@viggilante5349 I have one but it’s HUGE and heavy. I should get a smaller one!
