  • In this episode of the 2019 Honda Monkey build series, we install our reflashed ecu (PGM-FI) and show you the very important steps needed after install, which is initializing the ECU and resetting the throttle position sensor (TPS). These are kinda tricky if you've never done it before, and even trickier if you don't have a factory manual! Luckily, I'll help you out with that! Also, I discuss the details of the reflashed ECU, and my thoughts on it in a before and after VLOG.

      Thank you for watching! Yes, I plan to do a follow-up and know the results are gonna be good, as I did the same thing to the Grom already and it’s amazing 👌

    Hey John,
    Loved the video👍
    Did you ever find the sources to make the plug and play wiring harness for the l.e.d. tag bolts? I think in your video for those you said you would probably start making some for sale. I’ve kinda been waiting to purchase that from you if you’re making them.

    Hey John5, bit of a head smashing video to watch this one buddy, but looking forward to hearing of the results!
    I am kinda more about the cosmetic alteration on my 2019 monkey, rather than spending 4 grand to gain another 4 mph!
    If I want to go quicker, I just take one of my bigger bikes out to play.
    I guess I just bought the monkey for the novelty of the thing and to have fun and turn a few heads on the road.
    Need for speed was never going to be a priority with this little dude! 🤣👍
    Great vids and very well put together, keep at it!
    Best regards,
    Dazza.. 🇬🇧

      Hey Dazza, yeah this one was a bit in-depth, but hey, I like to put all the info out there that I can. I think the hot combo with this bike is the TB cam, DHM ecu reflash, MNNTHBX intake, your choice of catalytic-free pipe, and a 14/36, 37, or 38 sprocket combo. It makes the bike feel as if it should come from Honda in my opinion. I think it’ll yield about 12hp over the stock 9, and definitely won’t cost $4k! Lol

    • @MrDazza64
      @MrDazza64 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      John5XR , I hear ya fella! But it probably would cost that money here in the uk my friend! They really have our pants down and make us bend over here, when it comes to tricking bike my friend! ☹️👎
      You can average double the cost you guys would pay and you wouldn’t be far off!
      Your Yoshi system alone costs the equivalent of over 650USD over here.
      I fly out to Thailand on vacation in two weeks time and I will be getting some parts for my monkey whilst there, they’re half the price of, if I was to buy and ship them over here. 👍
      Don’t know if you’ve had your bike on a Dyno to pull 9bh?
      But I’ve seen a new standard bike put on a Dyno and it only achieved a hair over 6 horses!!
      So I’d be interested to see what your bike would achieve on Dyno when you’ve completed and tested this mod!?
      Keep em coming buddy.
      Regards,
      Dazza. 🇬🇧

    Restting the TP sensor I didn't get the blinking lights, it turned out that the DLC terminals were not being jumped properly, my jumper got disconnected while I had the EOT correctly jumped. Now I have a check engine light that is not going away. I tried repeating the proceddure having the DLC terminales jumped correctly but that did not work. Do you have any idea about how to remove the check engine light from an incorrectly perfomed TP sensor rest procedure?
    Great videos by they way, the information you provide has helped me a lot!

    Hi John5xr I have installed the MNNTHBX air intake! very pleased with the sound and increase in performance! I also reset the ECU as you described in your video but did notice afterwards my alarm now no longer works? I cant arm the bike or find bike? nothing happens when you press the key fob? Did you notice this problem? or has anyone else found this? It looks like I need to also reset the TPS as you have suggested? thanks! great videos! I will once again reset the ECU! and reset the TPS at the same time! although I found everything working just great after only resetting the ECU! apart from the alarm no longer working of course! I am also in the process of modifying my Monkey Bike and I am posting my thoughts on any problems I have fitting the parts rather than direct instructions on how to do so! you are doing a great job of doing that! Thanks

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, interesting thing with the alarm. We don’t have the alarm feature here in the U.S., so I wouldn’t have noticed that problem. Maybe send a message to DH Motoring or Cameron Jones Racing as they’re ecu pros and can maybe shed some light on that

  • @2mnyshp

    So after resetting the ECU, are the other steps needed if you didn't change anything on your bike (except the air filter)?

    Hey man, love your monkey videos! Question…I want to put a yoshimura exhaust and intake on the monkey. Will it run ok without doing an ECU flash? Or will it harm the bike? Thanks !

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! It’ll be ok with a pipe and intake, but you won’t be optimizing the air/fuel ratio for max power with both. I’d say start with an intake, then when you can, send the ecu to DHM or CJR and get it reflashed for the pipe/intake combo. It’s worth it for the price ($100 or so)

    Got a quick question I am following this video to install a flashed ecu but I also have to install a speedo correction device. Both require similar reset procedures. Should I install the speedometer corrector before the ecu or the ecu first and then the speedo?

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doesn’t matter really, the ecu can get reset after being flashed

  • @morrismanski
    @morrismanski 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi John,
    If the DHM ECU have problems and you will install te original ECU back , is the procedure the same, initialize etc.
    Or is it plug and play?

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bought a second ecu to make sure I had a original stock part in case I wanted to revert the bike back, so swapping it back in didn’t require any initialization as it was holding the original data from when the bike was using it originally. Performing an initialization and tps reset are not bad ideas when swapping in an ecu however

  • @mikeherber8358
    @mikeherber8358 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If i just replace the intake with MNNTHBX do i just need to reflash the ECU/ Red plug under the side cover

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      not necessarily, but initializing the ECU will allow it to "relearn" the fuel maps based on the new mods, like a "fresh start". It'll take about 20-miles or so to learn this, so plan a 20-mile ride or more and vary the throttle inputs, like go wide-open-throttle for a while, then find some spots to do 0-25% throttle applications, then some 25-75% throttle runs and so on

    The Honda Monkey rev limiter kicks in super fast in second and third gear (the bike starts chocking super fast when you go up in revs). In your experience, did the DHM ECU improve this?

    • @zunix01
      @zunix01 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Mine did that too in stock form, I bought everything from a dynojet pv3 to takegawa exhaust and chimera intake,all that to put everything back to stock, the bike was so loud every cops know where I was ...now I can just beat the shit and leave it poor monkey lol😂, off course those mods will help a little with the revlimit specially the pv3, with its +500rpm rev limiter one thing to consider is my top speed was affected a bit compared to stock with just my exhaust or just the pv3 ,I just need to trie my chimera with my stock exhaust to compare now

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never really tallied it all up actually! I’m finding I really like the cam/intake/exhaust/OEM ecu reflash combo for engine mods, and the 14/36 or 14/37 gear combo. This should all be less than $1000 and makes for one hell of a fun and reliable bike. The rest of my mods were cosmetic, except for the shocks, which were because I’m too fat

    You have ABS on your Monkey, correct? How did you get to your ECU? Remove the battery and battery box?

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does. The ecu is under the seat in front of the battery, no need to remove anything to remove the ecu

    • @donwahle8199
      @donwahle8199 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@John5XR My ABS unit is in front of the battery. Very little gap between ABS and battery. I can see it below the battery, but I have to remove the battery and battery box, is my guess.

    • @donwahle8199
      @donwahle8199 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anyway, my main question is: Do I need to initialize my ECU after installing different parts, such as exhaust and an intake, or not?

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The abs is a completely isolated system from the engine ecu. They don’t talk to each other

      Also, do you know if it is necessary to unplug the battery before swapping out the old ecu for the new one? I have the stage 1 ecu reflash for intake and exhaust from dhm.I spoke with David from dhm, and he said no. But other people say yes in order to prevent a check engine light

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to unplug the battery because you have to remove it to get to the ecu, which is mounted under the battery. so there’s not a choice really
