    Kamasi is THE bridge between classic jazz purists and a new generation--hungry for innovative, original jazz.

      There's something raw about his music that makes me think of Mingus, high energy in your face!

    • @everythingsawesome
      @everythingsawesome 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nope. He's "a" bridge, not "THE" bridge. There are multiple bridges, connective tissues, voices, souls. Widen your radar and learn more who's out there. Also, he's not even the shit. David S. Ware and Pharoah Sanders and Yusef Lateef could outplay him in a second, and could out-explore him too.

    I love the interview process during these sessions. It goes to show the majority of musicians are the shyest, softest spoken, most humble people alive. Even in their purest setting, they're no more than walking bags of anxiety like the rest of us. Yet again there is a Mac Demarco.

  • @Baribrotzer

    There's two kinds of important artists: originators and consolidators. Originators invent something new. Consolidators take the new things of their era, combine them with one another and the tradition, and help define a new mainstream. Kamasi may not be an originator - everything he does has been done before - but he is one hell of a consolidator. Just for starters, he's infusing funk and hip-hop into mainstream and modal jazz, doing it in a way faithful to all of them, and doing it in a way that reaches people.

    • @HaleG9
      @HaleG9 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Judging from a recent concert I gotta say he is indeed an originator, too, in the sense of bringing different melodies to the top at the same time full volume and creating an almost atonal climax where you'd think it has to fall apart, but it does not and creates a new journey that could go on forever. Hard to put that into words, you have to see and feel it. None of the videos here can transfer that live atmosphere I felt a few days ago.

      interesting thought but there is no difference between originating and consolidating. consolidating & combining into a new composite IS originality. all originality, especially in the musical sense, is a unique composite of everything that came before it. originality doesn’t exist in a vacuum

    The host seemed really impressed with the two drummers. I wonder what he'll think about two bassists as well! I wanna see more of Miles Mosley and Thundercat together.

    I love The Epic. Every time I see the band play live the have a new arrangement for a lot of the tunes - I wonder when they get the time to work them out? Freakin' awesomely talented line up.
