One of the best analogies I ever heard about new people joining long established fandoms was this: imagine you see a bunch of people playing a game that they've been playing for a very long time. You decide that you like the game too and join in. But once you've joined, you decide that all those people who've been playing the game long before you joined, well, they're just playing the game wrong, and now they have to play it your way because it's your game now, and if they don't like your game then they're just the worst types of people imaginable, and they should just leave your game.

I hope that Disney stops hiring directors that have a pet project story to tell that has nothing to do with Star Wars cannon, and then shoehorns their story into a Star Wars theme, expecting the fans to want to watch it. After a while, fans become cautious when they keep doing this over and over while destroying any resemblance to the stories and characters fans were coming to see in the first place.

This might have been a nice thing (coming together and such), but when StarWarsTheory has to come out and put the hammer down, you KNOW which side is playing the "shutup!" card.
In the last couple of weeks, the demonetization push against several very popular channels (that don't pander to the Disney+ mantra) really brought things to a head.
The way this simmers down (mostly) is in TELLING A GOOD STORY without mixing modern-day political crap into what shouldn't be there.
The Acolyte has shown definitively that the side pushing the censorship of other channels is a small crowd of 'squeaky wheels'.

    • @TheDCbiz
      @TheDCbiz 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

Wdym telling a good story with our political messaging, isn't that what star wars is? To fans of the Acolyte they feel it is a good story. For us fans who don't like it, it's not. OT fans said Senate meetings and trade embargoes in the PT was too much politics to be "real star wars". Even a new hope is political.

      @Giraffasaur 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

@@TheDCbiz sure! A simple example would be rewriting established lore to change the nature of a character's mindset or purpose, to give them the appearance of modern day social constructs. Luke Skywalker in Episode 4-6 has a very specific purpose to understand and hold to truth and virtue to become a Jedi Knight, whereas in Episode 7-9 virtue and truth were stripped away so that he wouldn't be better than a female protagonist in a feminist agenda film rebooting a franchise to make money, instead of delivering powerful storytelling and honoring the established tens of years of world building and character progression made prior.

I am a Black man. My father marched with Dr King Jr. I have elder family members that lived to vote for Obama but didn't live to see his innogeration.
    understand the importance of representation.
However, I refuse to watch the upcoming Snow White movie in a theater. I might not even watch it on Disney Plus.
It is absurd that a woman of color is Snow White and seven real world Little People (and additional stunt people) weren't cast because Peter Dinklage's INCORRECTLY criticized the classic film. (Why not hire an albino gal to play Snow if the company wants to be representative?)
Sometimes gender swapping, race switching, and sexuality flipping can make a franchise better. I am accustomed to Nick Fury being Black, despite my mother's huge collection of original Howling Commandos in our attic. On the flip side, it was stupid for the Secret Wars streaming series to compare the Skrulls to racial prosecution as well as Fury and *War Machine* debating who owes what because he's Black.
Updating our media as society progresses is inevitable. James Bond doesn't slap women anymore? Fine. No crows in the live-action Dumbo movie? Fine. Namor is from South America and has the traditional weakness of Aquaman? Fine. Mute characters when they say"Indians" for the broadcasts of Back To The Future Part 3 on television? I think that is stupid, but... fine. 🤷
However, the cultural changes to a franchise purely to score DEI-du-decade brownie points? You're just asking for trouble.

It’s Lucasfilm’s fault, this rift. They pit people against each other.
I actually think the fandom is more united than it has been in a long time. More and more people are seeing the couple at Explained for their true colours, and outside of a handful of wannabe access media-esque YT channels and a small minority that is very vocal, it seems most fans are on the same page.
As for the “drama” itself, this is what I’ve observed. One side has criticized Star Wars shows they don’t like. They often do it loudly, they do it in a humours and sometime crass manner. The other side wants to remove the first side’s ability to make a living by demonetizing them. Essentially, one side attacks content, the other side attacks people. I don’t see an equivalency there. You can not like Theory, Nerdrotic, G&G and RK Outpost, you can disagree with them vehemently, and still believe they have the right to express their passion however they see fit ( so long as they’re not breaking TOS, which it seems they’re not).

Andor is the foil to any claims that a lack of viewership was related to some sort of “aversion to diversity”. Andor in general had the largest uphill battle for success with its premise while The Acolyte had a premise that, if the story was done properly, had the potential to be a huge success with fans. Tangential counter examples include The Last of Us and The Boys, the latter of which is the most on-the-nose politically anti-right show I’ve ever seen yet manages to still bring in insane viewership because the show is good.
It’s somehow become rocket science that a well written, well acted, well directed story trumps all, and this playbook of poor excuses for lackluster products is becoming ineffective.
Do better Disney. Have your creative team prioritize story first. If their world views and experiences are too limited and that’s found to be causing issues, then THAT’S the diversity that you need to work on addressing rather than superficial characteristics and personal life choices being the barometer you’re using to hire or promote people.

Disney Star Wars' biggest issue is that they must polish up their scripts before filming. In interviews Headland talks about changing up the script as they are filming. Rian Johnson was filming episode 8 as episode 7 was being wrapped and he and Abrams wrote their scripts almost independently of one another. Lucasfilm needs to have a polished script ready to go and stick to it. Not only would that provide a cohesive vision for the project, but it should drive down costs because they don't have to do as much post-work.

As an old timer, i feel like diversity was never an issue in SW and still isn't.
The current issue is that they care more about a specific message than they do about telling a good story- and you can even see this in how they handled the OT characters in the ST. Han became a deadbeat dad for... reasons? Luke - the man who brought Vader back from the dark side - suddenly gave up on hope and tried to kill his nephew for having a bad dream? Really? This is garbage storytelling plain and simple...
So when "a message" gets added to a weak story, it looks like the only goal is to push the message and the movie is just the platform to do so.
Make good movies with good stories, and people will pay to see them. It's that simple.

One of the issues of listening to the other side is that the critical constructivists aka intersectional Marxists aka people who are woke care more about their political activism than storytelling and will use any manipulation of language to get their way. People like Leslye headland don't care if the company makes money. Luckily some higher ups at Disney still care about making money but there are obviously some people in influential positions who don't, or it is at least secondary. For people who are woke if a company or hobby or intellectual property can be dialectically synthesized it's a win for them. If it can't then they can have a sour grapes attitude about it and say that it deserves to fail because it's racist/sexist/etc. Instead of it being " if I can't have you no one can. " it's " if I can't use this to change the socio-politcal system that is the dominant force of the western world it deserves to not exist." People who are woke are eerily similar to the sith. Not because they can use the force or because they have red lightsabers but because they are obsessed with power.

Many of them through the mobile game swgoh and to start off they are just regular people and because the best characters in the game are from Disney Star Wars they don’t start hostile.
When the subject of Star Wars comes up however they tend to drop or change the subject rather quickly and I would like to add my philosophy is and always will be you like what you like we are all Star Wars fans. So after discovering I’m an old school fan I’m always confused when they stop responding when I have a question about the game.
Most old school fans I come across are always open to discussing Star Wars old or new though not always in a positive way.
Taking out the trolls and people just looking to be spiteful I don’t feel it’s the old fan base that’s not willing to talk. The new fans on the other hand have been fed lies about how we hate anyone who isn’t us sense the inception of this new era and I feel that has made them unwilling to accept us into their view of what being a Star Wars fan means.

The fan wars have always been a thing, and will always be a thing. I can't think of a single big "fandom" that doesn't have them. Right now Disney is "to blame". Before that Lucas was "to blame" for ruining people's childhoods by daring to add or change scenes in the holy movies. And then there were and probably still are people who detested the prequels, who consider them to be "not Star Wars" or not Star Warsy enough. Anything that is popular has its internal strife. Whenever Disney sells the franchise there will be some people out there who think the Disney Era was the golden age and whatever comes after isn't "their Star Wars."

Do you guys remember the 1990s & the early 2k, when people with new ideas would make new franchises?
Hollywood wanted a grittier, modern-looking spy movie with fist fighting. They didn't change 007, they created Jack Reacher, The Bourne Identity & other franchises that filled this niche they wanted.
The problem today is that studios are pushing new concepts into old franchises. Now, did Headland want to direct a Star Wars story or was she pushed into fitting her idea in the SW mold? We know that Ryan Johnson didn't even like SW, but KK wanted him to direct a SW film within the new SW Trilogy, and we all know how it went.

"I have considered myself a conservative..... To me that has always meant that the knowledge and ways of living that came before my time have inherent value... Tradition only matters if you share it. Truth is only truth is if it's unchanging. New doctrines, new scriptures, and new films cannot destroy what is already safe within...
"The force can only fix the world if you let it shape your individual actions first.
"The Force can only fix the world if you let itsl shape your individual actions first. If Star wars exists to fans as nothing more than sacred texts or as a nostalgic itch in need of good scratch well... Then they're just movies. But if you see Star wars and the way its characters act, the choices they make, and the destinies they fulfill as being good, then stop passing the buck in terms of responsibility for your feelings. They will--and are probably already--betraying you.
"Pass on what you've learned. Take responsibility. Stand up against the dark, but never at the cost of setting foot in the darkness yourself."
"Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny consume you it will."-- Master Yoda
I've been in a pit of despair over the past year because I've been so ill and I've let my sickness control my moods, and have let resentments control my thoughts.
I'm done with that because the time I have left on Earth is short. I don't have time to be miserable. If I am to live I am going to walk in the way of the light for as long as there is Spirit in me.

James Earl Jones certainly was a legend. His performances were always good in what little I’ve seen of him besides Star Wars; those being Lion King, Dr. Strangelove, and Hunt For Red October. Though his performance in Empire Strikes Back is my favorite.
As for the issue of the fandom, I don’t see it getting better anytime soon. With the recent stuff that’s started to happen regarding purposefully trying to get channels demonetized or even deplatformed, it’s only going to get worse. The problem is that we’ve turned entertainment and the way we engage with it into something we tie to someone’s’ morality and character. Admittedly I may have some questions if someone absolutely loves The Acolyte (or people who are truly anti-Jedi/Light side and mean it unironically), but I wouldn’t get too deep into it.
But the things that have happened with Star Wars Explained, Kyle Katarn, and whatever other creators would be lumped in that group has come across as foolish at best, and hypocritical and malicious at worst.
And when channels like The Critical Drinker, Nerdrotic, StarWarsTheory, or Film Threat end up reviewing something and I agree after watching it for myself, or when they’re commenting on entertainment as a whole and are proven right, then why would I trust people like Star Wars Explained? And if agreeing them makes me a “hater”, -ist, phobe, or whatever else, than so be it. Those words have been so diluted that you may as well be saying I’m tall and have brown hair. People need to stop at believing their opponent is a horrible villain rather than discuss the issue at hand.

To end fan wars: 1. Don't reward darkness. If you elevate the Sith, you draw a fan base that acts like Sith and not Jedi. 2. Accept that art is subjective and you'll never make everyone 100% happy and that's okay. Part of why fiction exists is to spark conversations and even debates. 3. Understand your brand, and put effort into understanding why Star Wars resonated in the first place. Lot of super fans are highly educated with a genuine love of film and storytelling and yes, that makes us harder to please, but you'll get more return from doing one project really well than phoning in a lot of forgettable content.
On the fan side, it's more about remembering how to respectfully debate. It's *okay* to have different opinions about media and exchange ideas. Do not assume things about someone's character or intellect because they like or dislike something. Let them tell you their reasons, don't assume them.
Embrace nuance. It's also okay to enjoy things that aren't well made or not enjoy things that are. I've watched Hand of Manos without the bots and the sequel and the puppet show... I can simultaneously enjoy that and admit it's a terrible movie. There's also well made movies that I can't stand for personal reasons. Good films can have flaws. Bad films can have good moments or good actors. It's all part of the discussion.
And you can apply some of this to real world politics. Dem/Rep or Liberal/Conservative are false binaries. It's okay to argue and care deeply about things. But arguments are more productive when we use them to deepen understanding of an issue and not just try to shout each other down.

I’ve said this many times : Star Wars NEEDS a librarian like Marvel does. Someone who KNOWS the stories inside and out. And lucasfilms non stop picking and choosing from Cannon, and then saying “oh we aren’t doing Cannon”. Isn’t helping. This has to stop. They must pull a full 180. Start listening to the majority of what the fans would like.
This change is IMPOSSIBLE with who is in charge now. Kathleen Kennedy should step down with grace. And I would hope Filoni leaves with her. (I know. That’s blasphemy. But look at his record for the last 2-3 years. He’s lost his way). Ashoka as a whole wasn’t very good. It was Ok. But not great.
A small character, Baylon with BARELY, IDK. Way 25 minutes of total screen time through the entire series was more interesting than the main character. That’s a fail to me.
Is it because he was a man? Is it because he was from a time that most fans want more or ? (After Order 66??). Idk.
I’d love to see a more adult oriented series where Darth Vader hunts Jedi’s on the lamb. And the conflict between he and the Emperor. How Palpatine is always treating him poorly.

The video is called "The Internet is Worse Than Ever - Now What?" I found it really insightful and surprisingly hopeful for our future.

LOL!! Throwing Sailor Naboo under the bus for giving you C-19. I'm sure you won't get any flack at all for that. :)

Of course, RIP James Earl Jones. But to answer the fan wars question. It's simple: Lucasfilm has to make an undeniably great movie.

Then making an “undeniably great movie” does nothing at all to fix the ACTUAL problem with them. The fandom was lost in 2014 right off the bat when they “cancelled” and destroyed the ENTIRE universe of nearly 40 years, and said none of THAT exists only what WE make from here on out exists. They lost 90% of the fandom from that very first incompetent decision. Right from the start.

Topic 1: May Mr. Jones rest in peace.
Topic 2: I gave up on Star Wars before the Acolyte (the premise/promo before release just didn’t grab my interest.) and now I’m onto watching all of old Star Trek (TOS,TNG,DS9, Voyager) along with SNW as it’s airing because it’s definitely revitalizing Star Trek and I think actually listening to it’s fan base unlike Disney.

I forgot to add Battlestar Galactica but that’s no where near as big but definitely filled with a lot of passion and care.

...when i heard the news that James Earl Jones had become one with The Force, one of my first thoughts was: Thor Skywalker is the Only Jedi that can give Darth Vader a Proper Send-Off...
...i spent most of the day wondering what would be said about this Legendary Actor...
...i would not have guessed those words could be condensed into 38 seconds...
...please tell me you have more on deck for us...?
    ...get well soon...

...i forgot what the question was.

Farewell to Mr James Earl Jones. May his light shine on in the Stars like Mufasa. May you be at peace in the eternal Force, like Anakin Skywalker. (There was never any Darth Vader. It was always Anakin).
Thank you for gracing us with your Grace.

I've been a fan of Star Wars since around the early 90s or so and over the past 5 years I've been getting into the EU, now known as Legends, whereas before I never paid much attention to it. I tried liking the Acolyte, but once it was finished, I couldn't excuse the bullshit plot holes anymore. If people like the show for whatever reason, that's fine, I Have no issue with that. I take no pleasure in the show being cancelled, but at the same time, it was a business decision. The show wasn't profitable. Anyone who can't see that is willfully ignorant. If the creators and fans of the Acolyte want to fund a second season with their own money to finish the story, and if Disney is okay with that and with having it on their streaming service, then all involved in such an endeavor have the right to do so. Not saying I'd watch it, but they can do that if they want to, which would probably be far more productive than calling everyone who has any kind of problem with the Acolyte a racist sexist bigot. That said, I am thinking of cancelling my Disney+ subscription for a number of reasons (quality of shows, terms saying you can't sue them no matter what the situation, etc., their complete and utter hypocrisy when it comes to racial issues), and the only reason I can think of for keeping it is for Andor season 2 and X-Men 97 season 2.
