    My favorite quote from Laurence Fishborne, the actor who plays Morpheus, from when he first saw the whole movie, “I remembered all of the philosophical and metaphorical things that were in the script. I’d completely forgotten about that…. And Morpheus… scared the shit out of me.”

    1999 was a very unique year for movies. Some of the greatest "plot twist" classics like "The Matrix", "Fight Club", and "The Sixth Sense", were released the last year of the 20th century. Some of my favorite films.

      I'm a scifi fan. Had seen 100's of scifi/fantasy movies by the time Matrix came out. This movie was beyond innovative... in story and film-making. Keanu ruled my movie favorites for a few years with Johnny Mneumonic, then came The Matrix. Keanu cemented his status in my top 10 movies and actors.

    This was all filmed in Sydney, Australia. I was working there at the time. My house mates were working in coffee shops and Reeves used to roll up, on his Harley. Everyone said be was so nice, left huge tips and for the movie, he gave his royalties up as the crew made nothing. He gave everything to them. :)

    • @marknickols7316
      @marknickols7316 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes. Sydney was chosen because it was cheaper to film there but also because the CBD was mostly fairly new buildings and, for northern hemisphere viewers, was not recognizable as any city viewers would know. With some clever camera angles which avoided anything even a tourist would easily recognize, Sydney stood the part of any modern city. If you look carefully, there are a few giveaways. When Neo is on the outside of the building near the beginning, the brief shots of the street below shows cars driving on the left hand side of the road. The woman in the red dress is walking by the fountain in Martin Place in the middle of Sydney, but the clever use of camera angles disguises the scene. I know the area well and even I didn't see it on a first viewing. The Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour itself are a km (5/8 mile) or even less from where the outside city shots were taken.

      Agreed! Many reactors appear shallow and try to act like they're too cool or too smart to sit through the given movie and criticize the characters' moves without trying to understand why he/she did it. Those are people who simply want to "be reactors". I guess everyone has their own style. I appreciate Dasha's.

    3:39 Back in the 90's clubs like this were very alternative, known as "underground". You can still find them if you go looking but dance music has become so mainstream they aren't really the same thing. "He is faster and stronger than they are"
    No. As Morpheus said during the training it has nothing to do with actual strength or speed. Neo finally truly understood that its all just a program and he (as a hacker) can change all the rules. He can be and do anything. Its like when you realize you are dreaming you realize you can control everything in that dream (as long as you don't wake up).

    This movie is actually a great metaphor for lucid dreaming - a lucid dream is basically any dream where you realise that you are in a dream, and at that point you can start to actively attempt to affect the dream in various ways.
    This is exactly what Neo is practising when he tries out the training programs - he is "lucid" in those "dreams", and can consciously train himself to affect the environments.
    Of course, an actual lucid dream will not harm your physical body in any way - it will simply try to cause your physical body to act out your dream movements, which is why we become paralysed when we sleep, except for our eyes, which is why our eyes move around a lot during the REM stages - but it is otherwise a very close analogy.

      Back when the Hellfire Club was located at the site of the former Blackmarket Café in Chippendale, it appared in the movie The Matrix starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving. In the particular scene, Keanu Reeves follows the white rabbit and meets Carrie-Anne Moss for the very first time at a dance club in this building.
      Back then, the Hellfire Club would host bondage nights where leather-clad patrons equipped with whips, ropes and hot wax let their imagination run wild. In 1997, several members of the Bandidos gang were gunned down in the basement by two members of the Rebels bikie gang. It took two years to shut the place down. The building has since become a café furniture showroom.

    You should definitely watch the other 2 movies, but you should also watch "The Animatrix" before them if you can. The Animatrix is a collection of animated short films from different creators that tell stories in the world of the Matrix. • @lordmortarius538
    @lordmortarius538 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    The whole thing about the Matrix, and what Morpheus is trying to get Neo to REALLY understand, is that even though it LOOKS like the real world, it isn't, thus the rules governing it can bent (or broken in the case of The One). "Do you think that's air you're breathing?" he asks Neo calmly after their fight, while Neo is huffing and puffing like a bellows. It's because Morpheus knows that he's not using his physical muscles, he's not exerting himself and thus his mind doesn't simulate the sweat and breathing one would have after something like that.
    It's all about perception and understanding. The kid at the Oracle's gives him a big clue: "There is no spoon". That's because there isn't. It's code, not a spoon, and code can be manipulated by one with the proper mindset. The Oracle can see that he hasn't fully grasped the concept yet, but gives him the cookie (with the One's activation protocol on it) anyways on the off chance he figures it out.
    And he does, at the end. Neo doesn't die when shot by Smith because he gets it: those aren't bullets, and that's not his body, so clearly he can't be dead. It's all code, and he's able to manipulate it directly after that, seeing everything for what it really is: background programming and lines of code. He can now see the command pathways for the agents and fight them with one hand behind his back, instead of just having to guess because he was still acting like it was the real world. That's how he is able to win, and become The One.
    It was a very mindfucky movie back in the day, no one in the general public had ever really thought about something like this before, and to this day we have scientists trying to determine if we really are living in a simulation or not, because how would we know if we're inside it? I especially love how they explain weird occurrences we see here like deja vu, in terms of "it's a glitch in the Matrix", which makes you wonder... was that a deja vu mind trick or was that really the system glitching out? :P

    • @samwallaceart288
      @samwallaceart288 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I heard deja vu explained as a glitch between our short-term memory and our long-term memory, where we accidentally perceive our immediate past as if it was something that happened weeks ago, hence the illusion that it happened twice; it's our long-term memory misfiring where it shouldn't
