I cannot tell you just how electric opening night was for this movie. It was a truly amazing cultural moment. No one was ready for the plot and when the climax happened in the hallway, people cried when Neo died and then the theater just erupted in cheers. I was 10 years old and will never forget it. Same year my mom also took me out of school to see the South Park movie.
They previewed The Matrix at my college 2 weeks before opening night. We were going crazy!!!! It was so entertaining! Best movie experience I had since Star Wars!
I worked nights when this came out. My ex-girlfriend(we were still good friends) came to my apartment and woke me up in the middle of the day to go see a matinee as she had seen it the night before and wanted to share it with someone ASAP. She worked in radio as a dj and doing news segments. She was really into movies. She knew the woman who held film screenings they had for the local movie critics and I could always go along if I wanted. This wasn't one of those, but it brought back those memories thinking about it. I wish they had been able to go with the humans being used as a neural network rather than the battery thing. I guess the studio thought no one would understand it. I rememer thinking how the battery thing didn't make any sense, but just accepting it. Switch was intended to have a different gender inside vs outside the matrix. That would have been so cool, but maybe the world wasn't ready for it. Ended up going with an androgynous character.
When I came out of the cinema on the day of release after watching this (I was 16) - me and my best friend stood on the steps of the cinema having walked out into the daylight, took one look at the "world", turned to each other and knew we were both thinking the same thing... that's the power of this movie!
Yes, it's extra impressive to think of this film in context of cinema of 1999. It was so ahead of it's time compared to what other movies were doing as far as effects, visuals, plot lines, all of it.
I'll never forget seeing this in the cinema over 20 years ago with my father. Easily the most insanely mind blowing experience in cinema I've had. This film elevated movie making, action, sfx, and fight choreography, and set a benchmark which even today hasn't been surpassed in any meaningful way.
There arent a ton of Agents, just the same three(at least that we saw in this movie.) But all the humans not onboard the ship, that are in the matrix, are still plugged into the Machine AI. Which means the Agents can take over your existence whenever they need/want to. So like when Trinity shot the Agent on the roof during the Morpheus rescue attempt, the Agent left that human body and moved on to the next one, and left on the roof was the body of the helicopter pilot he took over and died while in control of.
Yep, that's why they indiscriminately killed all the guards: because if they didn't, the guards could be taken over by agents who would then be right there. So those people they killed were actually plugged into their little pods, and they all actually died. Collateral damage...
@@vorbis4860I don't quite agree about the guards. They killed them because otherwise they would have stopped them. Only way to get in. Unless the agents weren't aware that an attack was underway, I actually think it's a bit of a plot hole. An agent almost immediately jumped in to the helicopter pilot when they got the call. While Neo and Trinity were still fighting other guards on the roof. Agents would have had plenty of opportunity to jump in to one of the backup units in the lobby as soon as the call for backup went through.
@@JakobBerry Alternative explanation, since Smith was disconnected while the lobby fight was happening, he was unaware and unable to give orders at the time. Seems unlikely that programs like the agents would act without orders, hence the other two come into the room with Smith and Morpheus asking what he is doing before engaging themselves.
@@JakobBerry How I see it is that agents can only easily enter someone who is open to it at some level. They can enter everyone who is plugged in, but to enter someone who isn't open to it would take a bunch of hacking. So in the beginning of the movie, the reason that they call the police to wait and not just take their bodies over is that it is faster to drive there. Watching what was happening must have freaked the pilot out and made him open to the process.
A timeless movie, honestly. You'll enjoy this trilogy. Something to bear in mind, also: It isn't that everybody is an Agent, it's that an Agent can be anybody.
One of the cleverest design decisions - when Neo is at work his suit is deliberately ill fitting, and all of the angles of his cubicle are slightly off. Gives that subtle feeling that he does not fit there and that something is wrong. I love when movies do that.
When she refers to Neo as "Copper Top" she is refering to him as a battery. "Coppertops" are often referd to Durecell Batteries due to the copper colouring they have during packaging.
It makes me feel so old when I see other people watching this for the first time in the 2020's particularly because I saw it in theaters when it released in 1999, but I love the appreciation that new viewers have with this timeless classic. It has aged extremely well for a movie of its time.
I agree. Wha has weird though is now that we are older, we don’t watch the latest fad movies. So I bet you in 1999, there were a bunch for 40s 50s year olds who never saw it, and now they’re likely in their 70s and never seen it still. I’m reality movies are really just meant for people ages 5-40. For example I haven’t watch game of thrones, yet I was in my late 20s when it came out.
Yeah its strange because for many years even after the film it was like 'everyone has seen the matrix', literally almost everyone had seen that movie that you could talk with in the 2000's but now were at a point where there were people not even born yet when it was released who are discovering this huge cultural influential movie.
25 years later, it's still my No. 1 movie of all time - it''s so perfect, not a single boring scene. And it was so cutting edge in 1999! No movie had such special effects
If you think about it, the Oracle's prediction was correct. She said Neo had the gift but wasn't the One yet because he was waiting for something, maybe another life. He only became the One after he was shot and died and then came back in his next life.
Actually she demonstrated the point when she told him about the vase or not and how that affected the outcome. If she told him that he was the one that could have changed the outcome. Morpheus reiterated that point by saying she only told him what he needed to know (or hear) to affect the outcome.
If you think about it, the vase is a metaphor for him as well. It breaks and she says one of the kids will put it back together. Symbolizing his death and coming back to life as Neo.@@l2xsniper1
Hugo Weaving and Laurence Fishbourne really held down the acting. To me, they are the standouts with Carrie-Anne Moss havingher breakout film. This movie changed stunts and special effects moving forward.
Sitting in the theater in 1999.....this was the first real 21st century movie. A lot of the special fx and camera work had never been seen before in any film.
@@CribNotes If I understand what you mean by 21st century, I'm not sure how you can justify that. . It looks like it could have been made today. It should be noted that the special effects and filming of Star Wars has degraded, and subsequent films - especially the prequel garbage, have worse special effects and production value than Star Wars. Star Wars and Matrix were made in the same century, btw. But Star Wars was made 20 years earlier.
@@nickcharles1284 The point is Star Warts was way ahead of its time in 1977, and The Matrix was way ahead of its time in 1999. That's why I said it was really the first movie of the 21st century.
@@CribNotes I understand you. But you are applying a set of logic to one movie, while not applying to the other. If two action/adventure movies - both made in the 20th century - could be released today and look great and as if they were made today, then by default the one made 20 YEARS earlier must hold your title of "first movie of the 21st century" Because: it was first.
As do the ones from the 70's and 80's. Wish there was still the ingenuity and variance of films from back then, instead of the endless reboots and repetitive CGI-laden superhero films.
I was going to say 80s as well, something weird happened around 2007, Avatar was the last "amazing" technical thing with the 3d then I feel cinema went downhill fast, Harry Potter, LOTR, then it tanked
@@tru3sk1ll I would say that 2014 was the best movie year of all time. And 2015 was good too. After that, it gets harder and harder to find something worthwhile. But I wouldn't consider Avatar and Harry Potter anywhere near the all-time greats either, so maybe we simply value different things. They are Top 50, at best. LotR is Top 10 though, I don't think we will ever see a 10-hour journey of that quality ever again. And that probably goes for The Dark Knight trilogy as well.
This film is still phenomenal. My dad took me to see it in the cinema at release. It blew my mind. To this day the special effects/gun work are still some of the best I’ve ever seen in a film.
I saw the Matrix in theaters when it was first released 20+ years ago. You have no idea what it was like to see The Matrix back then. Even with today's computer graphics (CG) tools, it still looks good - but back then it was surreal. Star Wars Episode I was the most highly anticipated movie that summer and everyone was expecting it to be a CG masterpiece but The Matrix came out of no where and blew it away. It shocked the world.
Remember the "Deja Vu" bit? Well when this came out I went to see it with a bunch of friends and we were chattering about it as excitedly as you might imagine as we went home in the car. I was driving. On the way home, there were two road junctions that look very similar in the dark. When I came to the first junction, I thought it was the second one, so when I then came to the second one, I completely automatically said, "whoa, deja vu". And then everyone in the car instantly shut up, looked at each other, wide-eyed, and gulped. It was, as they say, a _moment_ ...😎
it is an absolute shame that there are no if very few reactions to the animatrix. one of the best sources of information about the universe of the matrix and extremely entertaining.
Matrix Online also had a ton of background and lore as well. Unfortunately it is no longer around. Especially the characters and the reason on why and how they exist in the Matrix itself. I can't go into more without spoiling the next two movies.
Something you may have not noticed is the slight green tinge everything has throughout the movie. Have another look and you’ll see it. I’m guessing this was done to match the green colour of the old monochrome monitors of that area.
I don’t normally watch these “first time watching”, reaction videos, but rewatching this through your “innocent” eyes allowed me to relive seeing the movie in the cinema in 1997... Thank you.
Kamilla - agents can move in and out of any program still “hardwired” to the system. People still in the matrix are programs as well. So there weren’t a lot of agents, they were just able to jump from person to person. Remember when Trinity shot that agent in the head on the roof, then his body turned back into the original guy? This was my favorite movie of all time for a long time. I saw it in the theaters 4 times, and I almost never go to the movies. They did such a great job of advancing the technology of movie making, without distracting from the story telling. Never feels like over 2hrs to me.
@@Centane It's totally fine! I think what I liked so much about this movie is that I connected with it early on; faster than all of my friends. As soon as I saw bald Neo in the bed of fluid connected to those hoses, I got it. I feel that it's such a great parallel to the spirit realm and how it connects to the physical realm. We as spirits walking around this Matrix in our Earth Suits (bodies), while reality is elsewhere. Funny, there is a verse in the Bible that refers to the "Matrix" of the womb. I wonder if that's where they got the name from. Oh, btw, I have considering learning Arabic on Babbel, as it is literally in my blood.
@@Centane The Matrix is a huge computer game designed to distract humans, so think of it that way: every person inside is a player in the game (who doesn't realize they're in the game), but the Agents are NPCs who have more powers than the players and can take over other players' characters. Neo and his friends are slightly more powerful than other players, but less powerful than the Agents, because they've hacked into the game and enhanced their character's powers with the "cheat codes" they learned with the training simulations.
@@Centane no worries even I had a deep realization of the total concept after watching "The Animatrix" You must watch it!! WB rocked I mean the Wachowskis

Matrix was an absolute banger when it came out. It redefined the action film genre and was way ahead of it's time. I was 13 when it came out and I was "whoa, I've never seen something like that before". It's still a fantastic movie to this day. Glad you watched it! :)
Not everyone could even tell they were stunts. There was an American special forces soldier captured by the cartel in Colombia because they wanted him to train their soldiers to do midair kung fu like Trinity and dodge bullets like Neo. They thought it was a legitimate representation of American military training.
I watched this movie on the 31 december 1999 with my uncles and my brother just a few hours before 1 january 2000 so this movie was my kiss goodbye to the 90s
The thing is that about 2 decades back I watched the movie on my first modern computer, one with a DVD drive (which was amazing back then). Most computers even werent able to handle things like this back then. I watched the Matrix movie with a friend in the late evening. After we finished, he went home. But when I returned to my computer and tried to close the Power DVD software, my computer suddenly powered off (like Neos computer in the white rabbit scene). That was very strange, because the computer worked flawless until that very moment. After I powered on the computer again, my standard Bios screen was gone and I had cryptic green characters everywhere. Then it loaded windows and the whole screen was filled with random mostly green gibberish (but rarely also other colors). I was kind of shocked, I even thought for a while: "is that film real, is it happening now?". Even it havent looked exactly like the matrix green latters, it still reminded me of the green matrix letters, also it happend directly after that movie and I was young and it was late in the evening. It was kind of mind blowing. It happend again and again every time I turned on the computer, even it sometimes looked slightly different. What happend: my graphics card just died in that moment and had to be replaced (some capacitators of my Voodoo 3 graphics card, a known problem). The thing is, about 10 years later I had a very similar problem with another graphics card that died in a notebook. - This time I even took a picture, so that people would believe me my story and dont just think that I made all this up...
The way they could contact anyone and know everything that's happening isn't too complicated. While they were talking to him on the phone, he was in the Matrix and they were watching it live on their screens.
Take note of something, Neo had a green tint before he was freed from The Matrix, but once he was free and not part of the program, the green tint is not on him anymore, neither is it on his friends, but the whole matrix world still has a green tint, seriously awesome small detail many (my self included) never realised until many many years later.
When you trip out when the Oracle calls out what you said. 🤣 Yeah it took me growing up to understand how the matrix worked from the training programs Neo went through. I was 6 when it first came out and I saw it.
For being an 24 old movie with a lot of special effects it is really well made and the first time watching it makes you think if you are in the real world or not.
And she told him that he was waiting for something "another life maybe". Later in the movie he dies and immediately comes back in his next life as the One. She really did tell us about the twist, we just had yet to understand it. Very clever movie on many levels.
If you think about it, the Oracle's prediction was correct. She said Neo had the gift but wasn't the One yet because he was waiting for something, maybe another life. He only became the One after he was shot and died and then came back in his next life.
There’s part of the script that alludes to why Cypher wants to be reinserted to The Matrix & why he’s lost faith in Morpheus. Sadly the scene was trimmed down for the theatrical cut, but the missing dialogue is below. CYPHER: I'm going to let you in on a little secret here. Now don't tell him I told you this, but this ain't the first time Morpheus thought he found The One. Neo: Really? Cypher: You bet your ass. It keeps him going. Maybe it keeps all of us going. NEO: How many were there? CYPHER: Five. Since I've been here. NEO: What happened to them? CYPHER: Dead. All dead. Neo: How? CYPHER: Honestly. Morpheus. He got them all amped up believing in bullshit. I watched each of them take on an Agent and I watched each of them die. Little piece of advice: you see an Agent, you do what we do; run. Run your ass off. Did you notice how many spoons are laid out in front of ‘Spoon Boy’? There were five bent spoons & he hands Neo the sixth. This will link into something that’s mentioned in the next two films, regarding The Matrix itself, as well as Neo. Also, it’s worth watching the Animatrix; especially The Second Renaissance Pt 1&2; which explains the rise of AI & the war against humanity. It’d make such a good prequel!!
@@RandomBros88 You’re welcome. It would’ve made for a much more interesting scene that what we got in the theatrical cut; although, it could’ve lead to viewers seeing Morpheus in a totally different way. But I love the fact that the spoons represent the previous ‘chosen ones’. It certainly adds more weight to what he says…. “Do not try and bend the spoon, that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth… there is no spoon. Then you'll see that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself”.
"R and R" is an old expression that use to be used in the military. It stands for rest and relaxation. It refered to when you would be granted time off away from the front, or just work in general, so you could recupereate and recharge.
You should definitely watch "The Wizard of Oz." Sure, it was released in 1939, which was a long time ago, but it holds up pretty well. All older cinema / TV are like stage plays, that's all. I think you would also enjoy "V for Vendetta," which features an actor from "The Matrix" in a starring role. It's excellent. As for the sequels to "The Matrix," IMO they're not that significant. The story they intended to tell was in the first movie, and the rest is just them pumping the success of the first movie for more money.
The key to these movies is the philosophy that they are using to make the story. I happened to be in a philosophy class before this movie came out and we use to watch Total Recall when we discussed the nature of what is real and what reality actually is. I remember when this movie came out we went with our philosophy teacher and he said the movie that he will show every year has now changed. Each movie is based on a different movement in philosophy. This one is very much about the nature of reality. Is it what we see or is what we see an illusion? The Wachowski's were really on to something at the same time dealing with their own struggles with what they were in the real world before coming to terms with who they were as people. These movies were very very deep.
It's hard to tell you how important this movie was, just in a general sense. It was the dawn of the internet as we know it now (2023), but the story drew on ideas that have been around since the golden age of science fiction. It is inevitable. And that's *just* the story. The Wachoskis invented a whole new way of filming, embraced the meta, and really just revolutionized movie storytelling.
Morpheus explained in the beginning that everyone that is still plugged into the Matrix are likely to be _"Commandeered"_ away by an agent, it's similar to how a cop can just take a person's car in pursuit of a suspect/criminal. So agents can Commandeer people in the Matrix, and if it ends in the agent being defeated/dying, that means the person they took over also died.
The Oracle took all pressure off of Neo by guiding him to think he wasn't the One. Because of that, he found out on his own that he IS the One. After all, how many times do we perform well when we were self-conscious? Lol, I never do.
Actually, the Oracle's prediction was correct. She said Neo had the gift but wasn't the One yet because he was waiting for something, maybe another life. He only became the One after he was shot and died and then came back in his next life.
Everything the Oracle said turned out to be true. He didn't become the One until he died and was resurrected. That's why he was so much more powerful after that. Before that, he wasn't strong enough to actually do anything about the agents.
22:30 Neo training his mind to overcome the "rules" of physics, that is, the programmed physics within the Matrix, is a bit like Luke Skywalker learning how to use the Force. He has to "unlearn what you've learned". I.e., "free the mind". Understand fully that his own perception can alter the rules within the Matrix. He finally gets that by the end.
it's so good when today Morpheus says "we gave birth to AI" and all the reactions to that... because when I watched it in 1999, it was a futuristic prediction not reality.
"I don't know anything about the movie"..... A bunch of people with cool sunglasses living inside the computer.... Um did I miss something else in this movie? 😂😂😂 Brilliant brilliant brilliant!
Laughed out loud at "She's not real... He's not real either" and "Oh, he's going crazy. *phone rings* He's not going crazy." The Matrix is such a great movie to see someone watching for the first time with no prior knowledge
there is something here most people who weren't around at the time this movie came out don't understand. nothing like this had EVER been done before in cinema. This is why the matrix is so iconic. the fighting, the visuals, the cinematography, all of it, was so ground-breaking in 1999. Watching it for the first time over 20 yrs later doesn't compare AT ALL to how it was to watch it back then.
As someone who was there , yeah. Although we can't convey that until blue in the face. Like jurassic Park, predator, Terminator, ET, Gremlins, The Thing, and on. The time just wrecked face. Their are films later that are equally amazing, but man it was juice concentrate back them.
What never made sense to me was, Morpheus tells him the line is tapped. Then he tells Neo, "...if they knew what I knew, you'd probably be dead." THEN he tells Neo, "You are the One..." Didn't he just let "them" know, Neo is the One? And now "they" know that, and will try to kill him?
@@Centane - There's history about Smith and some things he knows about the Matrix - Including who Neo is. So he already had intel. I won't spoil the rest. You should watch the other 2 movies in the original trilogy 😎
When the Oracle said to Neo about being the one “Looks like you’re waiting for something, another life maybe” I’d say Neo was only the One when he was reborn ( another life ) inside the Matrix. Also don’t forget the prophecy said of a man born in the matrix who could change things. When Neo came back in that hall way from death, he was in fact born in the Matrix as the prophecy said.
Brief explanation of the Agents: The Agents are just bits of code wothin the Matrix. The three in this movie are named Smith, Brown, and Jones. How they work is that they basically attach themselves to people who are still plugged into the system. Nobody _is_ an Agent, but an Agent can take over control of anyone in the system. In the next movie, you'll meet three new Agents: Jackson, Johnson, and Thompson. One thing I love about this movie is the subtle world building details that you don't notice the first time you watch, but you see the swcond time around. Like when Switch calls Neo "Coppertop," a nickname for the Duracell battery, and a reflection of plugged-in humans' status as a power source for the machines.
Cypher gives the insight to how they understand what is going on around inside the matrix. When he says he no longer sees code, just different women by hair color. Since the Matrix is a program, a complicated one, it still needs code to represent every function and describe how to render everything. So if you understand the code for colors, body type, male/female, height, weight, hair, different clothing, various actions humans make, buildings, different floors, windows, all that... you are basically watching a computer game, and relaying the information to someone inside the program.
One.of the best lines in the movie was the first time we meet Switch and she calls Neo "Coppertop". Neo isn't a redhead. She was referring to Duracell...batteries... A nice bit of foreshadowing.
They only intended it to be one movie. But then it got so popular and they gave them so much money they had to make the next two movies pretty much on the fly. They said in many interviews they never thought it was gonna be a trilogy and wanted the audience to imagine what happens next. P.S You definitely have to see Wizard of Oz, it's one of the greatest movies of all time, absolute classic! Muchas Gracias señorita;)
"I don't know anything about The Matrix, it's like people living in computers or something". That's WAY MORE than I knew before seeing it in theater. The TV trailers for the movie were super vague about the plot back then, and did not show any scenes from outside of the Matrix simulation.
One of the best movies of all time, great reaction! A lot of people dislike the sequels 2 & 3. I did too as a teen because they weren't as much straightforward action movies. As an adult I love and appreciate them way more for the philosophical exploration they do. Truly great movies as well, I hope you react to them!
Most people think the Matrix is an action movie with philosophical themes, but it's really a philosophical movie with action scenes. The sequels are much more enjoyable from that perspective.
Nah you have to be kidding! Literally my favorite movie! So much of your content lately has basically been for me lol. First the dark knight series, then rocky, then lately its been Gladiator, Fury, Arrival, Avatar, hell even Spider-Man 2! Looking forward to when you eventually make it to Avatar The Way of Water😁😁
When Morpheus asked if that's air Neo was breathing, he meant that Neo was still setting limits as per the real world. In the real world, the conditions make it difficult for you to do physical things. But since you're in a computer program that's fooling you and you know it's not real and thereby limited only to your imagination, you can push yourself beyond the normal human limitations. For Neo, as the One, he has complete control over the Matrix and it's many facets, which also include gravity, hence his ability to fly.
"She's not real. He's not real either". Funny thing is once one understands the Matrix, these 2 are the only ones whom actually are 'real' in this scene. They have complete free will and understanding of the environment they are in. R&R is Rest and Relaxation. I've seen a lot of movies which laughably attempt to show what 'Tripping' is like. The scene where Neo is looking at the mirror, the crack disappears and he says 'Did you see . . . ' is a perfect example of the 'corner of your eye hallucinations' one may experience. Never seen a pink elephant in my life.
if you check out the rest of the series PLEASE take a look at the "Animatrix" too as it actually goes a bit of the lore and the history behind things, it's a bunch of different shorts done in various styles of animation.
It's not that the people are' agents, it's that they can run the agent program which temporarily takes over the host. Once the agent program is finished or moves to another body they return to normal, likely experiencing blackout similar to how Neo was when he was bugged.
"I kinda wonder: how did the _first_ person get out of the Matrix? Because they have to do so many things outside it, you know?" Remember that Neo was told there's still one free human city (called Zion). Presumably people from that city (who have only ever lived in the real world) "rescued"/"woke" the first people who were recovered from the Matrix.
Funny that you'd ask "how the first person got out of the matrix" - very good question that I feel not many people asked and is surprisingly answered in the 2nd movie ;)
What are you trying to say? That I can dodge bullets? No, Neo. I am saying that when you are ready you are ready you won't have to. Gives me chills every time I here that. What makes it even greater is that at one point he does dodge bullets but fails and then by the end, when he is ready, he doesn't need to dodge bullets. The Wachowski's really put a lot of thought behind this. This movie is near perfect. Great pacing, great script, great action, great concept, great acting, great casting, great story arc, great soundtrack, great costuming. One of my favorite movies to rewatch. Never gets old. Take the Oracle for example, the vase situation isn't just a cool thing that makes the Oracle look badass. It represents what she does. She guides ppl. What she says doesnt need to be the truth or a lie. It needs to be what they need to hear for the chain of events to happen that leads them on the right path. The vase situation is a very nice micro example of what she is all about. She says things that will cause a chain of events to happen. And the Oracles demeanor, casting, acting, dialogue, and costume are all so great.
Including both parts (where he dodges bullets before he becomes The One and then not needing to after he becomes The One) really helped clarify the story in a way.
Still one of my favourite trilogies! Really hope you'll watch the other 2 parts as well! I didn't like the new one though and prefer to still see it as a trilogy.
The lesbian actors in this film are awesome. “Not like this” is perhaps the perfect exit line. The “Wachowskis” (twins) gender corrected directly after this movie.
@@sld1776 eh, I wasn't conceived when star wars came out. jedi came out of year I was born. It still was part of my upbringing. lesser extent with star trek and other stuff cause my parents were not as interested. i consider matrix to be on par with star wars in term of culture and cinema impact. it has a lot more to do with her parents never being into movies much or her not be into them either until now. I had seen all time relevant movies covered by the channels so far before I was 20.
The idea that an AI as "a singular consciousness that spawned a whole race of beings" didn't quite have the same impact as a statement back in 1999. Here we are however 24 years later and, well, that seems a bit more immediately scary.
Hey Kamilla! How are you doing? Wow I stopped by when I saw this one! After the Lord of the Rings this trilogy is my best! Looking forward to see your reactions after this. Take care
Let's see if you agree: Neo guessed he wasn't the one and the Oracle didnt correct him because he had to believe it. In the kitchen he didnt believe in himself and the Oracle just went with the Obi-Wan style "from a certain point of view" type of explanaotion.
Great reaction! Matrix 2 and 3 (reloaded and revolutions) are worth watching. Don't recommend the 4th. So basically anyone who hasn't unplugged from the matrix (like Neo before he unplugged and woke up), they can be taken over by an agent cause their mind isn't free yet.
Its not bcoz there mind is not free yet its bcoz they are hooked up to the matrix where the programs control and when Morpheus and Neo are inside the matrix they do that from outside the pods that is controlled by the machines so they can not be taken over
@@Natedogg7719 I personally didn't have an issue with the meta commentary of the 4th, and I liked many parts of it. But I know a ton of people didn't like it. Which is why I don't normally recommend it, despite my own personal feelings
This movie is famous and iconic. When it came out it may have been the first movie since Star Wars, and 2001 before that, that just blew people away with something they'd never seen before. I don't think it was meant to have sequels but they eventually made some and they weren't nearly as good.
I highly recommend you give Matrix 2 and 3 a chance. The first one is untouchable, but 2 and 3 do tell a nice story that wraps up the trilogy. And obviously there is a whole lot of slow mo action and philosophy involved.
What's really going to bake your noodle is when you realize, especially with the sequels, that it's always been The Oracle vs Agent Smith. She runs the whole thing while convincing everyone that it was their own idea or prophecy.
I love that the Oracle told him he is not the one. Because that was what he needed to hear to believe he was "the one". He needed to come to terms with it with his own free will. Not because someone else says it to him. He took the step of "The One" and went for what he needed to do. If the Oracle told him the truth, he probably would never step back into the Matrix to save Morpheus and take down agents. Sometimes the truth can scare you and stop you from taking the risk you need to take.
I still remember when my friend from school called me up, "DUDE you HAVE to come to the cinema and watch this film, I've already watched it twice this week!" I think he watched it 2-3 more times that week.
I don't think anyone from this current generation can appreciate fully how this film was shot back in 2000. The sequences were never done before in history of film
Like was said earlier; "Inside the Matrix, they are everyone - and no one." The digital images of the real humans in the tank (the people in the Matrix) are software in the system that the agent programs can move in and out of at will. So no, there aren't a ton of agents.
I still remember walking out into the parking lot. Everybody was still “Whoa…”
They previewed The Matrix at my college 2 weeks before opening night. We were going crazy!!!! It was so entertaining! Best movie experience I had since Star Wars!
Once you know know it's Plato"s 'Cave' allegory in a modern action movie form, it loses the originality. Still a super cool film tho.
@@dogawful Would have made about as much sense as a someone who's white inside the matrix but black outside.
When I came out of the cinema on the day of release after watching this (I was 16) - me and my best friend stood on the steps of the cinema having walked out into the daylight, took one look at the "world", turned to each other and knew we were both thinking the same thing... that's the power of this movie!
Same here. The first conspiracy theory esk , were in simulation.
I remember the feeling… it still gets me today!
Yes, it's extra impressive to think of this film in context of cinema of 1999. It was so ahead of it's time compared to what other movies were doing as far as effects, visuals, plot lines, all of it.
Same happened to me.
Same feeling I had after watching the third one. Came out at noon, it was so sunny and it seemed so fake!
But in the whole matrix world are much more Agents. You can see/read it in the Comics and Games.

I love that line. Definitely didn't catch it on the first watch though haha
Woah
25 years later, it's still my No. 1 movie of all time - it''s so perfect, not a single boring scene. And it was so cutting edge in 1999! No movie had such special effects
If you think about it, the Oracle's prediction was correct. She said Neo had the gift but wasn't the One yet because he was waiting for something, maybe another life. He only became the One after he was shot and died and then came back in his next life.
The whole movie takes on a different slant the 2nd time you watch it.
Movie is a masterpiece start to end. Every piece of dialogue has meaning.
Actually she demonstrated the point when she told him about the vase or not and how that affected the outcome. If she told him that he was the one that could have changed the outcome. Morpheus reiterated that point by saying she only told him what he needed to know (or hear) to affect the outcome.
WTF???? What you say is incredible and at the same time makes sense!!

Movies in the 90's-00's just hit so damn different than nowadays.

Kamilla - agents can move in and out of any program still “hardwired” to the system. People still in the matrix are programs as well. When this movie first came out, it was unreal, mind blowingly awesome. It set the stage for a way of filming.
Not everyone could even tell they were stunts. There was an American special forces soldier captured by the cartel in Colombia because they wanted him to train their soldiers to do midair kung fu like Trinity and dodge bullets like Neo.

The reason the Oracle said Neo was not the one was because at that time Neo did not believe he was the one. By the way. Neo spelled backwards is One.
Lmao, oen
And she told him that he was waiting for something "another life maybe". Later in the movie he dies and immediately comes back in his next life as the One. She really did tell us about the twist, we just had yet to understand it. Very clever movie on many levels.

Neo: Really?
Cypher: You bet your ass. It keeps him going. Maybe it keeps all of us going.
NEO: How many were there?
CYPHER: Five. Since I've been here.
NEO: What happened to them?
CYPHER: Dead. All dead.
Neo: How?
CYPHER:
Honestly. Morpheus. He got them
all amped up believing in bullshit.
Damn.. thanks for this! I never knew.
As corny as it sounds I think the Oracle realised he was waiting for Trinity to confess.
"Being the one is like being in love."
Everything the Oracle said turned out to be true. He didn't become the One until he died and was resurrected. That's why he was so much more powerful after that. Before that, he wasn't strong enough to actually do anything about the agents.
except he wasn't the one?

Neo training his mind to overcome the "rules" of physics, that is, the programmed physics within the Matrix, is a bit like Luke Skywalker learning how to use the Force.
He has to "unlearn what you've learned". I.e., "free the mind". Understand fully that his own perception can alter the rules within the Matrix.
He finally gets that by the end.

there is something here most people who weren't around at the time this movie came out don't understand. nothing like this had EVER been done before in cinema. This is why the matrix is so iconic. the fighting, the visuals, the cinematography, all of it, was so ground-breaking in 1999. Their are films later that are equally amazing, but man it was juice concentrate back them.
What never made sense to me was, Morpheus tells him the line is tapped. Then he tells Neo, "...if they knew what I knew, you'd probably be dead."
THEN he tells Neo, "You are the One..."
Didn't he just let "them" know, Neo is the One?
And now "they" know that, and will try to kill him?

How they work is that they basically attach themselves to people who are still plugged into the system. Nobody _is_ an Agent, but an Agent can take over control of anyone in the system. In the next movie, you'll meet three new Agents: Jackson, Johnson, and Thompson.
One thing I love about this movie is the subtle world building details that you don't notice the first time you watch, but you see the swcond time around. Like when Switch calls Neo "Coppertop," a nickname for the Duracell battery, and a reflection of plugged-in humans' status as a power source for the machines.
All of those people weren't agents. They were all just random programs and once an agent knows where you are they can just hijack the nearest program.
Cypher gives the insight to how they understand what is going on around inside the matrix. When he says he no longer sees code, just different women by hair color. Since the Matrix is a program, a complicated one, it still needs code to represent every function and describe how to render everything. So if you understand the code for colors, body type, male/female, height, weight, hair, different clothing, various actions humans make, buildings, different floors, windows, all that... you are basically watching a computer game, and relaying the information to someone inside the program.
some people can not be told what the matrix is they have to see it for themselves
P.S
You definitely have to see Wizard of Oz, it's one of the greatest movies of all time, absolute classic!
Muchas Gracias señorita;)
and then they made the dreaded 4th movie
"I don't know anything about The Matrix, it's like people living in computers or something".
That's WAY MORE than I knew before seeing it in theater. The TV trailers for the movie were super vague about the plot back then, and did not show any scenes from outside of the Matrix simulation.
One of the best movies of all time, great reaction!
A lot of people dislike the sequels 2 & 3. I did too as a teen because they weren't as much straightforward action movies. As an adult I love and appreciate them way more for the philosophical exploration they do. Truly great movies as well, I hope you react to them!
I loved all 3 when they came out. But have to admit I was already an adult.
Second and third movie talking about zionism ideology. Its no longer about woke theme from the first movie
Most people think the Matrix is an action movie with philosophical themes, but it's really a philosophical movie with action scenes. The sequels are much more enjoyable from that perspective.

@RedundantDan - FINALLY someone gets it !
dudee... first time reactions for epic movies like these are genius content. its like i get to rewatch the movie for the first time again!
How amazing it must be to see this movie for the first time! Matrix is one of the best movies in history! They don't make movies like this anymore!
43:11 She wasn't an agent originally. The agents can jump into bodies of any person still connected to the Matrix.
"this guy is sonic the hedgehog. What are we going to do about that?!" Lmao, that got me laughing.
😂😂❤️
_cough_
woke?
Woke…them up
The third movie explains it all.
I remember my mom showed me this movie when i was 11, a few years after it came out. It kinda...hits different now
Funny that you'd ask "how the first person got out of the matrix" - very good question that I feel not many people asked and is surprisingly answered in the 2nd movie ;)
A few people were born in real world.
The agent just hacks into the nearest person and takes over their body
Fun fact. The stunman/stunt co-ordinator for Keanu in the Matrix series became the director for Keanu's later incredible action series, John Wick.
Still one of my favourite trilogies! Really hope you'll watch the other 2 parts as well! I didn't like the new one though and prefer to still see it as a trilogy.
Actually, had to delete the old comment: this is just an incredible movie that has aged like fine wine.
This is an interesting movie because its heavily inspired by Ghost in the Shell and a few other anime classics.
It was also influenced by Grant Morrisons "The Invisibles". That Comic was even passed around on set.
The lesbian actors in this film are awesome. “Not like this” is perhaps the perfect exit line. The “Wachowskis” (twins) gender corrected directly after this movie.
Hard to believe that some people havent seen the matrix 😂
Kamilla wasn't even conceived when the movie came out.
😭😭
@@sld1776 eh, I wasn't conceived when star wars came out. jedi came out of year I was born. It still was part of my upbringing. lesser extent with star trek and other stuff cause my parents were not as interested. i consider matrix to be on par with star wars in term of culture and cinema impact. it has a lot more to do with her parents never being into movies much or her not be into them either until now. I had seen all time relevant movies covered by the channels so far before I was 20.
@@Humstuck well said
@@sld1776 LOL that's some strange logic
The idea that an AI as "a singular consciousness that spawned a whole race of beings" didn't quite have the same impact as a statement back in 1999. Here we are however 24 years later and, well, that seems a bit more immediately scary.
terminator had done it before this, skynet
Hey Kamilla! How are you doing? Wow I stopped by when I saw this one! After the Lord of the Rings this trilogy is my best!
Looking forward to see your reactions after this. Take care
It's a masterpiece!!! This is a movie which changed Sci-Fi in 1999 and for the decades after!
I pretty much watched this almost every day when i was a kid. Took me awhile to understand a few things. Regardless, i love the action and the story.
The 4th might be the most brilliant
Its not bcoz there mind is not free yet its bcoz they are hooked up to the matrix where the programs control and when Morpheus and Neo are inside the matrix they do that from outside the pods that is controlled by the machines so they can not be taken over
@@Natedogg7719 I personally didn't have an issue with the meta commentary of the 4th, and I liked many parts of it. But I know a ton of people didn't like it. Which is why I don't normally recommend it, despite my own personal feelings
The 4th wasn't great, but it was better than the 2nd and 3rd movies.
This movie is famous and iconic. When it came out it may have been the first movie since Star Wars, and 2001 before that, that just blew people away with something they'd never seen before. I don't think it was meant to have sequels but they eventually made some and they weren't nearly as good.
Directed by the Wachowski ̶b̶r̶o̶t̶h̶e̶r̶s̶ sisters. 😅
You’re crushing the reaction game Centane, never change
❤️❤️
I still remember when my friend from school called me up, "DUDE you HAVE to come to the cinema and watch this film, I've already watched it twice this week!" I think he watched it 2-3 more times that week.
I don't think anyone from this current generation can appreciate fully how this film was shot back in 2000. The sequences were never done before in history of film
1999...
Like was said earlier; "Inside the Matrix, they are everyone - and no one." The digital images of the real humans in the tank (the people in the Matrix) are software in the system that the agent programs can move in and out of at will. So no, there aren't a ton of agents.
