@@dustingdustin Sorry. I thought you meant that you wanted a TV show prequel series. You meant that it was a great start for the film series. Yes, yes it is spot on.
His tattoo reads "Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat", or "Fortune Favors the Brave" in Latin. Keanu is awesome, he underwent a lot of training to be proficient in weapons, fighting and driving so they could film the scenes without too many cuts and always show Keanu in frame. Gives it that more real/grounded feeling. Also, a nice subtle detail about the dog he takes in the end, it was scheduled to be put down, that's why he chose it.
@@danw3391 There's a slew of conflicting info out there too. I scoured various discussion threads on the topic for months (years before John Wick came out) for my own tattoo. From the various sources I found, Fortis is Strong, and Audeces is Bold (which I ended up using for mine). Makes sense, Fortitude versus Audaciousness. Never saw Adiuvat for Favor. I found newer Latin sources use Juvat. I went with the older Iuvat (before the language adopted the J). Ultimately landing on Audeces Fortuna Iuvat for mine. I did reach out to a couple Latin professors on those boards to confirm and they said it worked, so heheh, no idea... got it inked, then recognized it when the movie later came out.
"Good night, John" "Good night, Jimmy" and "Why don't you take the night off?" "Thank you, sir" are two of the most intelligent conversations in movie history.
That 2nd guy also gave John crucial info in code about how many people were inside, John respects him and gives him the opportunity to not be involved. Just a chef's kiss of a scene.
Answer to a small question : yes their coins are gold "tokens". They're payment for completely a job and pay for everything involving the guild. Also, Marcus (Willem DeFoe) was John's friend for long while. The sniping scene where he missed was on purpose. He was warning John she was there.
I always love that moment early on when Viggo is told his son pissed off John Wick and he response is just ‘oh’; it tells you exactly how dangerous John is to these people
You are the cutest reactor there is And I am so happy you noticed that Daisy went to John before she passed. Not many people notice to that detail. Shit is so heartbreaking.
Your reactions are so enjoyable. You always seem to sincerely appreciate your fans' recommendations, and you're very perceptive, and it's fun when you add little footnotes from your Russian background.
I love the Baba Yaga references in this movie because Baba Yaga is one of my favorite witch story’s who has been villainous and at times helpful. I’ve always wanted to know her motivations and how she thought in her walking cabin/house. Love you’re reactions Dasha!! The fact that you’re Russian and could translate anything that wasn’t scripted just made me smile ear to ear! Keep up the awesome content! And letting us know how the Russian accents were in the movie! You are very perceptive because most reactors don’t catch the fact that the dog crawled to him. Most people think they placed the dog there as a slap in the face or something.
About the dog that got "killed" at the beginning of the movie: "Unsurprisingly, Andy, who was particularly friendly, was extremely popular on set. Not only did he bond with Reeves right away, he made Omer Barnea, the actor who had to "kill" Andy, feel super guilty. As Krafsky remembered, "He felt horrible. Every time the director yelled cut, he just picked up the dog and cuddled him."
The director used to be a stuntman; that's why the fight scenes are so amazingly choreographed. I also recommend you watch Eastern Promises, it's about the Russian mafia in London.
It is my understanding that the tattoo on John Wick's back translates "Fortune favors the bold" and that is the motto of a US Marine company in Hawaii which indicates he has military experience as part of his background.
Thanks for the translation/insights into Russian. It added a lot. Great reaction! If you liked the fight choreography in this movie I suggest you watch Serenity. It has a couple of the most beautifully choreographed fight scenes that I have ever seen. But first you should watch the short lived series Firefly, of which the movie is an extension. The movie Serenity stands on its own, but ties up a few of the loose end left when the series Firefly was cut short and is more enjoyable if you go into it already familiar with the characters. It’s probably the best sci-fi space western ever made.
That scene where Wick is making his monologue about "being back", I hear just a little bit of his old accent/ mannerism in it. Its right before the bag is put over his head. I had that same thought after seeing this for the first time.
They did the guns perfectly. They made sure that every round of ammo was accounted for and he had to change clips when the bullets would really have run out.
So fun that you took the time to explain some of the Russian background and folklore connected to the movie! Awesome reaction. Glad to have seen you react to this!
Brava Dasha, Brava! This was, in my opinion, your greatest tutorial review. It made me so proud of you. I was so happy to see the joy you expressed as you explained to us that a lot of Russian spoken in this movie was not just for show, but being done well. Thanks for your effort. Keep smiling.
Dasha, I love ❤️ when you get to watch a movie with lots of Russian speech! It's fun to watch you tear apart what they say because for some reason Hollywood doesn't want us to hear Russian correctly 🤣 From your reaction, though, it would seem Keanu (John Wick) got most of his lines correct, which is great 👍 It just shows how excellent an actor he is and is determined to do his best in everything. Thank you. I hope you do the other two movies 🥰
Your reactions are so good, so in depth. The shootout/fight scene in the club was EXACTLY like you explained it, it was like a complicated dance. The choreography of that scene was exquisite. Your reactions and thoughts about this film were so intelligent and well said. Really enjoyed your reactions.
I liked the translations too. I always wondered how good their Russian was? Which sounds like, for a movie, not too bad. Maybe not perfect, but not bad either.
Its so great that Dasha is Russian and can explain the Russian in the film with greater insight than just what the subtitles can offer. And her English is also very good!
A lot of these people are from the Matrix like the doctor that fixed John Wick played the keymaker in the matrix. This movie was directed by the stunt coordinator of the Matrix movies. That's why every shot was well choreographed almost like a dance.
Every person in the world had the same reaction as you when they shot the 🐕 shock, sadness followed by anger. And thank you for the context of the Russian subtitles.
They didn't shoot the dog they used a bat on a puppy, even worse. A bullet would have been an instant kill just from the shock/trauma the bat meant it suffered longer as shown by the bloody trail it left crawling to John.
There is so much noise on the internet / youtube. However; without this tech I would never know Dasha exists. She is an absolute joy and so full of life. Thank you.
Your explanation of Babayaga sounds like the story of Hansel and Gretal, which is a "Grimm's Faery Tale." The Grimm brothers, gathered all the "stories with a moral" from their travels - including Eastern European folklore - to create fairy tales meant to scare children into behaving. Thank you for the explanation of the word. It makes a few things come together for me.
The thing I found amazing about Baba Yaga is she had a moblile home before they were a thing. Her house was like a tardis from Dr. Who, bigger on the inside than the outside. It moved because it had giant chicken or some sort of bird legs growing out of it's bottom to carry it around.
For the police coming to check on noise complaint, some of the police do know about John Wick being an assassin and the secret assassin underworld, even if they're not directly part of it.
I didn't know the story of Baba Yaga was so similar to Hansel and Gretel. A story about a witch in the woods that eats children. Very cool to see reactions from native speakers in foreign language films. I have learn a bunch of cool stuff about Squid Games in a similar fashion.
That's the only similarity. Baba Yaga isn't a lazy bum who just sits at home waiting for children to come to her. Think of her more like an anti-hero version of Santa Claus. She is a respected mountain witch who would bring good tidings if you behaved (like Santa giving presents), but punish you if you were bad. If you think about it, it would have been used by parents to scare their kids to not go exploring alone in the woods, when in reality kids that went missing might have been hunted by wild animals or got lost and died somewhere where their body couldn't be found, so the parents used this supernatural entity as a way to s=make their kids behave.
There was a recent make of the movie. I think it's called Gretel and Hansel or something like that. It came out a year or two ago. It was actually pretty good.
watching the emotional interaction to the introduction of the puppy and the wife dying was what guaranteed that I would be here for when she saw the dog dying. Now I am subscribed
Baba Yaga is referenced correctly in Ant-Man and the Wasp. I don't know why the writers got it wrong, but they went with it once they committed to keeping it in the movie. I think you'll like John Wick 2, it goes more into his background.
I think the boogey man translates better into english than a wolf.. or atleast simplifies it for english audience. Would prefer wolf myself tho, sounds more bad ass..
Thank you for the translations! I never realized the song Iosef and his friends were singing in the pool was the same lullaby Viggo was singing earlier.
29:09 Dasha, if anyone can judge, you can. Your English is far from broken, maybe a little limited on rare occasions, but your comprehension and correct usage of western idioms is nothing short of impressive.
John Wick (Keanu Reeves) was born Jardani Jovonovich in Belarus. He was an orphan, and was taken in by the Tarasov Russian Mafia where he was raised as an assassin. ... At the beginning of the first film, Wick has been retired from the mafia for five years.
It never ceases to amaze me how well this movie is done. You really feel how he feels, and watching your reaction I try to tell you “Hang In in there it goes good.” For the puppy scene. I loved this reaction also the notes on the language was great. Thank You
"Do you want a chocolate?" You are so beautiful Dasha. I loved seeing you smile throughout the movie! I especially loved seeing you react to this wonderful movie and enjoyed your Russian explanations. :)
Where I grew up (UK) nursery rhymes were nice little songs like "baa baa black sheep" and if you were naughty then Santa wouldn't bring you toys for Christmas. In Russia, nursery rhymes are about kids getting bitten by wolves and if you are naughty then an old witch will boil you alive and eat you. I'm betting children are more well-behaved in Russia.
So great to see a russian reacting to this cos I always wanted to know what they said and sometimes they don’t give the subtitles. Thanks for all the explanations Dasha, you’re the best! :)
Dasha I love watching these movies with you!!!!!!! I thought the fight scenes were amazing like a beautiful Russian ballet!!! The choreography was amazing!!!!!!!
This was a treat watching with you, your Russian knowledge helped me understand & enjoy the movies terminology better. As always, enjoyed your reaction very much.
Thank you for reacting to this movie, I loved it already but it's so cool to see you explain if the translation of the Russian dialogue is correct :) Much fun to see your reactions to all the story, I hope you'll also watch the next ones!
Well in case your wondering, the gold Coins are used *as a currency for services in the underworld,* instead of paper money or credit card, as these coins are mostly untraceable by the banks or authority. The coins are used mostly in the Continental Hotel chains for various underworld services but other underworld services can also be paid by the coins.
Great reaction ma’am. As an Australian young man myself I loved the John Wick film franchise because it is so awesome, so badass, so entertaining, so fascinating, so intense, and so wild & my favourite one was the first film. Poor John he was orphaned when he was a boy, he lost his childhood joy by being indoctrinated to be trained as a ruthless assassin plus hitman for different criminal organizations, he lost his beloved wife Helen to terminal illness, his first dog Daisy was killed, his friend Harry was killed, his friend Marcus was murdered, his cool vintage car wrecked, his beautiful house blown up, his continental hotel privileges lost, his continental allies turn against him, he lost his reputation, he lost his safety, he lost his ring-finger, & he had to give up his deceased wife’s wedding ring to the Elder of the High Table, what is he going to lose next? absolutely depressing & painful. This poor tough man can’t even a catch a break. The only time he caught a break when he married his wife Helen for five years until she sadly passed away. He lost mostly everything positive in his life. Any normal human being around the world would have committed suicide if they experience those awful tragedies in their life. Like seriously his life is literally a never-ending nightmare absolutely devastating. Life is full of ongoing suffering like seriously it is so not fair that we humans have to experience depressing chapters in our lives, but I guess that is the price of being born alive into this sad wicked world.
It's ridiculous how much work they put in to these movies, the choreography alone is spectacular, the director is a martial artist himself and his team are all from the stunt world
He was singing the lullaby at the club, essentially making fun of it because he didn't think John Wick was that dangerous or scary to be called Baba Yaga. Also at the end, it showed that the dog was going to be put down and he saved it by bringing it with him.
11:25 Martini is the drink of choice in a lot of movies because it's transparent and so you can use water as a replacement for the shooting which is easier to set up. For a colored alcool you have to add some colorant to mix with the water to make it seem believable which is not a big problem but still add some preparation to the scene. I guess Vodka works well too since it's also transparent.
Dasha, I love it when you see a movie that has someone speaking Russian, and to see your reaction to those parts! and if subtitles aren't translating what they were saying, you provide something of the translation for us, or even giving us the correct translation of what they actually said. "Me and English writing." yeah, me and cyrillic! and at 4:36, I would have loved it if the actor, when he said simply, "Oh." if he would have said, "Oh, shit." in Russian.
Have you not reacted to John Wick 3 yet? The John Wick 4 hits digital on May 23rd and Blu-ray on June 13th, so it'd be a great time to catch up with third one so you can react to fourth one as well.
Also at the end he didn't just steal a dog. If you can read the papers on the cage the dog is scheduled to be put down. It was probably a animal shelter and nobody wanted to adopt it. He saved the dog from being killed.
I'm subscribing, as I think this Lady's translation is so accurate. I spent time in Russia learning the Language. My first Language was English, then German and then Russian for the "Rat Lines" I'm old and bold now, but the "Cold War" left a lot of Lads with the Skills, but too old to be employed. Kind regards Peace ✌
Your explanation of the old woman in the forest that eats kids also sounds like Hansel and Gretal story from the fairytales that I grew up with. Great reaction.
This is so amazing to watch this with you and get your prospective of the Russian part of the movie! I thoroughly enjoyed hearing you describe some things
Love your reaction. And your comnentary from the Russian perspective. I think the word you are looking for is "style". As an assassin, he is super efficient. No lost motion.
I liked this reaction video BEST of all your videos! I enjoyed seeing you smile when they spoke Russian. I'm SO impressed that your English is so excellent that you understand almost everything -- and you even know when you DON'T understand, and then you are VERY good at figuring out the meaning. So impressive. You're SO smart and nice. This movie is fun because the emotional underpinnings are so touching -- his wife, his dog. I'm sure you will watch JW II and III, but they're not as good as this one (from an emotional perspective). THANKS SO MUCH for your wonderful reactions! And, of course -- it doesn't need to be said -- it's very pleasurable to see you, as well, LOL.
Like in mexican folklore... La llorona is one our parents used to scare us into behaving .. especially when camping by rivers etc .. or el cucuy which is our basic boogie man ... Usually used to get us to go to bed... Lol ..
Dasha I love your accent mixed with English as you explain of the words in Russian. As you continue with reactions of John Wick with the sequels 2 & 3. Number 4 is finished filming, and coming out next year. I am not giving out spoilers of 2 & 3.
The dog that he rescued from the kennel was a Pit Bull, the clipboard on the cage door is stamped with 'To Be Put Down', so John rescued the dog from euthanasia.
Also, the Director and co-director of the John Wick movies worked with Keanu on The Matrix as stuntmen. One of them was actually Keanu's stunt double. They've worked together a lot, and so when they told him they had an idea for a movie they wanted to make, Keanu jumped at it. . What's amazing, is that they also WROTE this story, built the world it takes place in. Not only are they terrific action coordinators, but they can write an amazing story, and they're incredibly talented directors. Chad Stahelski really needs to do more projects, because the guy is a rare gem among directors. He knows how to balance his action, knows how to make a camera shot work for the story, tells a great story, knows how to work with actors to get the results desired.

Im in LA, but my Russian gf said that most of the Russian dialog was broken and sounded as it was slow motion. Lol
The puppy dying is even SADDER when you notice the blood trail it left when it crawled over to him before he died.... 😭
John Wick elevates killing people into an art form. He is a highly skilled artist.
Dasha, love the translations and your response to the movie.Great reaction, stay safe and well.
What is also cool is that the guns in this movie don't have bottomless magazines. He is constantly running out of bullets and loading his guns.
3:13 "Are you fucking kidding me?"
We're gonna need new t-shirts.
Just when I thought I couldn’t learn more about this movie as far as words, sayings etc.. Thank you for this
O yes Dasha...I will watch this with you. As someone who saw this before everyone caught wind. It excites me when people see it for the first time
Thank you for reacting to this movie, I loved it already but it's so cool to see you explain if the translation of the Russian dialogue is correct :) Much fun to see your reactions to all the story, I hope you'll also watch the next ones!
"John Wick and the Amazing Super Complicated Dance" Great name for a sequel! Great reaction Dasha.
This and it's sequels are great. Thanks for the russian lesson as well. Great reaction. Love watching you.
I also remember from reading about Baba Yaga in elementary school that she lived in a house that walked on chicken legs.
It's ridiculous how much work they put in to these movies, the choreography alone is spectacular, the director is a martial artist himself and his team are all from the stunt world
First time watching you Dasha, love your accent, very cool to get the perspective of someone who is actually from Russia for this movie
"Me and English writing."
yeah, me and cyrillic!
and at 4:36, I would have loved it if the actor, when he said simply, "Oh." if he would have said, "Oh, shit." in Russian.
My first Language was English, then German and then Russian for the "Rat Lines"
I'm old and bold now, but the "Cold War" left a lot of Lads with the Skills, but too old to be employed.
Kind regards
Peace ✌
Another great reaction Dash, you are so sweet in all your commentary. Keep up the great work!
Dasha is right. It's a dance...dance of death. Should have been called 'Fuctloose' 😁
Fun Fact: The actor who killed that puppy was playing with him on set because he felt awful doing that scene 😭😭
Baba Yaga is the witch. They meant Babaika but mistranslated it and never fixed it. Pitch Meetings already made fun of this.
I think that Dasha's impression of "Eastern Promises" would be fantastic.
Your explanation of the old woman in the forest that eats kids also sounds like Hansel and Gretal story from the fairytales that I grew up with. Great reaction.
I've been wondering when this movie was going to get picked. Hopefully you enjoy and react to them all.
Yet again, Dasha, another great reaction to a superb action movie. Excellent!! Keep them coming!
Never watched John Wick. But this reaction actually made me want to go watch it. Kudos Dasha.
Watch all 3!
Thanks for the translation. I like this so much. It was so cool to get a Russian perspective.
Like in mexican folklore... La llorona is one our parents used to scare us into behaving .. especially when camping by rivers etc .. or el cucuy which is our basic boogie man ... Usually used to get us to go to bed... Lol ..
Dasha
I love your accent mixed with English as you explain of the words in Russian.
I appreciate that we have a native speaker to tell us what is right, wrong and not-quite-right but still works in Russian.
