Kilani Bakery has the best brownies (no nuts). I ate a bunch of those growing up in Wahiawa. One day I will make my way back home to retire (at least part time). When you went to your grandma's house, I recognized the area. I grew up not too far from there (behind Foodland). My parents still live in the same house. I bet if your family went to Dr. Honda (dentist), you know my aunty (she was the hygienist there). I went to Kaala too! The weahert in Wahiawa is like the weather here in Seattle. Mahalo for featuring my hometown. 🙂
Born and raised in Wahiawa. Went down memory lane with you. Only town that you go in/out with bridges going over Lake Wilson. Leilehua High School..Mules mascot in recognition of Schofield Army. California Ave is named after a bunch of California early investors that wanted to buy all the property. Some of the very best Korean Food.
LOL...Was watching your Wahiawa video, wondering where you were filming. Cut to Gramma's house & had a good chuckle...coz my residence is at that condo complex!-hahaha. About eateries, haven't tried El Palenque yet(weird hours of operation), Taqueria is XLNT & Mex #3 is Barrio Cafe, next door to Kilani Bakery. Cannot do Wahiawa video w/out mentioning Shige's Saimin Stand, Seoul Food Kitchen & Tanya's Grill & Pies, imo. Tho born/raised Haleiwa/Waialua, Wahiawa is my home since 1984
Maila are you are always awesome and amazing! That's cool a 5 year old watches you! Yay! OMG that desert looks sooooooo good! BTW your camera person is top notch! Wow nice house especially inside! Yay grandpa, lol! I love the family background stories! Sorry you got bullied.. that sucks, kids can be so cruel.. our son had some of that in elementary school too. As always such a great episode! Love it! ❤
I grew up in Wahiawa from 02-2013. For anyone deciding to move to Wahiawa with kids, just know that kids from Wahiawa are prideful & territorial. Specifically older Elementary/Intermediate aged kids (they usually mature from that phase in HS and stick to their own cliques). Most kids there grow up fast so they're not always friendly in the beginning, and can be real sensitive to sarcasm & stares if they don't know you. 'Sensitive' as in they'd wanna fight or verbally attack you. Lol that goes for both boys & girls. But your kids will see their peers dirt biking, chasing roosters around town and catching them for sport 🐓 , walking around with a wild pig they just hunted, maybe a fight here and there & may even see their peers doing drugs out in the open from time to time unfortunately. My advice is to teach your kids to mind their own business, don't stare at folks & really just be as respectful as they can be when around locals. It's just a different culture in these smaller towns like Wahiawa. You just have to give respect to get it, if you're new in town. Finding their group of friends through arts, clubs or sports will make life A LOT easier. 👍🏼 It can be intimidating in the beginning but it gets better! I've lived in Japan, SoCal, NY & the PNW, but Wahiawa is home💚 Once you're in with the locals, you're family. It's really an "everyone knows everyone" type of town. Just be patient, keep an open mind & be a good neighbor.
Loved this video. My mom’s side of the family lived in Wahiawa and I still have onhan there. I grew up in Pearl City, Hilo and PNW. I have some great and some no so great memories. I still live Wahiawa and all of Hawaii. Aloha for the video. ❤
I love wahiawa. There was a kinda fancy restaurant there called III coins had a big ol' plastic bull out front in the late 70's. I remember going to Wahiawa intermediate school and the last day of school was Kill Haole day, George my neighbor was my life insurance that day!
Mahalo for this video. I was born and raised in Wahiawa, up the ‘heights’ on Nakeke Place. Fished a lot at Lake Wilson, bought comic books at the bus station, went to the newly constructed Iliahi Elementary School, and went to Leilehua during my freshman year. My best friends were Japanese, Hawaiian, Filipino, and haloes-military brats. Million bucks a house? Auwe!
I miss wahiawa. That’s where I used to hang out in my growing up years and I went to leilehua high school. The weather was perfect. It is a nice smaller town.
Maila, I’m so grateful the TH-cam algorithm brought me to your channel! My partner and I visited Kauai for the first time two years ago and he and I fell deeply in love with the people and the island. Next month, we’ll be on Oahu for two weeks and we cannot wait. I’m using your videos as a guide to plan out some of the places we’re going to visit, eat at, and get some amazing coffee!!! We live in SoCal, but Hawaii has our hearts. Btw, you are SUCH a natural on screen, and your videos are amazing. Mahalo for your beautiful spirit and sharing pieces of your life with us! New subscriber here and can’t wait for more videos. 🥰
We lived in Waipahu and Wahiawa in the mid-70s. Yes, single wall homes are cold in the winter - I had an electric blanket! We were married at the Wahiawa Botanical Gardens and had our reception in our carport. I worked at Wahiawa General and our house was right across the street on Lehua, so that was very convenient. The house was a small plantation type, but the yard had an orchid hedge out front and birds of paradise and banana trees, it was beautiful - unfortunately, got torn down at some point and now there's a big double story there, probably multigenerational, judging from all the vehicle parked around. Much quieter back then, lots of sugar cane and pineapple fields. Quick trip to the north shore was a real plus. We used to go watch polo games at Mokuleia - free entertainment. Pakalolo - one of the Hawaiian words I still use sometimes. Good memories.
Thanks for making this video about Wahiawa. It sounds like your experience was much like mine. My mom was born & raised there, and my dad was military. We visited my grandparents as much as possible, and whenever we're there we drive by their house too (on Kaliponi Street). Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Lived in Poamoho Camp for a few years. Played a lot of tennis at the park tennis courts. Loved Sunnyside Cafe and Dots. Good times! Also…shout out to Hawaiian Eye ….great doctors there!
Kaala was my elementary school. I wasn’t a bully but I saw my friends being bullied. I did not hesitate to wave my hand 🤚 and make them bullies turn around. 😂 Looking at those bullies today, most have not accomplished anything in life. Looks like you and I have accomplished much. So a word of wisdom to bullies. It’s not worth being a bully in this life. Love Aloha! Wahiawa Strong
Love ALL of your vids! I'm looking to retire to Hawaii in 5-7 years so I'm checking out all of my options through your videos haha! Mahalo and keep up the great work! 🤙
California Ave was named because of the C&H Sugar. A lot of the street names are names of the families that lived there during the sugar plantation days, and from what my elementary school said, California Ave is named because they were all from California
In northwest Colorado here. Cold and snowy. I got a good laugh at you saying Wahiawa is cold. I currently have 4 feet of snow in my yard and another foot on the way this weekend ugh. Anyways I really enjoy your videos! I normally stay on the North Shore...great vibe! Love Hawaii! One day I would like to make Oahu home! Thanks for the great content!
Living in New England, every time I see a video where she talks about it being ‘cold’, I think, “that’s the place for me!” Mid-50’s is t-shirt weather.
Right...we had 40's the other day...I stuck my chair out in the snow with my t-shirt and shorts on in the snow and sat in the sun for about 30. My skin has not seen sun since I left Oahu back in September lol. @@H..M..
I know this might be out of the blue. Just wondering if a new construction on a 1 acre lot, modern net-zero energy house would be worthwhile in Wahiawa ? I grew up in ewa beach and I really liked the cool weather there.
Kilani Bakery is my favorite place to get brownies. Foodland Farms tries to copy but no can beat Kilani Bakery. BTW, Have you heard about the New Commision Rules? Can you a video regarding it and how it affects sellers and buyers?
Wahiawa is a unique town… a village really that’s… well?… kind of “off the grid” as far as New Developments are concerned but… Lots of History there starting with Kukaneloko birth stones and its link with the military… I’m Hawaiian and retired ARMY living in GA now but WAHIAWA is my hometown! GO LEILEHUA MULES 1977!~
You grew up here in Missouri :). I'm actually looking to move to the Wahiawa area at the end of the year from Missouri. I'm single and looking for something small, 1 bedroom primarily but 2 bedroom at the most that's on the cheaper but livable side, as you said "Charming", I'm also retired Military so I wanna be close to the base, I thought about a condo BUT I have a couple of classic cars that I will be having shipped over and I don't want to have a seperate place to park them plus I like to tinker on them so i will need somewhere to do that so a condo just won't work.
Maybe I am nostalgic for military housing life, and maybe that isn't what it used to be, but I would rather just live on base/post. You can easily leave and go anywhere anytime without having to pay for your house.
Sadly, many homes are being bought from outsiders instead of locals. It's no wonder many locals are being priced out of Hawaii because social media such as TH-cam advertises Hawaii, so many outsiders with Big Money come in and buy everything. They are driving up the cost of living even more. My mom's next-door neighbors from California moved in this past year, and whoa! there is no more street parking as they have 5 cars, they let their dog shit on the grass and don't even pick it up. It is so upsetting, that these rich outsiders come here in droves and drive out the Kamaaina's. I hope in the end those selling Hawaii to outsiders, kicking out the locals truly get their Karma for screwing us over putting us either on the streets or sending us out of Hawaii...All in the name of money and greed.
That is happening everywhere. Even small lake towns in New England have seen prices triple in the last 5-10 years. Sad thing is, we go to the lake every summer and half the houses are empty because the owners don’t rent anymore. It’s getting harder to both buy and to rent.
Keep in mind, a real estate agent has nothing to sell. You can only sell what you own. You can, however, hire a real estate agent to advertise your property and to make sure your interests are protected by a contract. It is ultimately the homeowner/seller that decides when to sell their home, how much to sell their home for, and WHO they sell their home to. We are staunch advocates of local homeownership and more so, advocates of HOLDING your real estate. It is a daily conversation to empower locals to position themselves for ownership. In the absence of any legislation barring foreign investment, local homeownership is the ONLY hardened defense against it.

Awesome history. Been wanting to go to Oahu for decades. From Indiana. Cooler Wahiawa weather sleep better like I do in Winter here in Indy.

I wish I knew where in Wahiawa I went to a dinner banquet back around 1980.
Being at Schofield, I became really familiar with the town.
Was it at Dot's on Kilani Ave?
California Ave was named because of the C&H Sugar. A lot of the street names are names of the families that lived there during the sugar plantation days, and from what my elementary school said, California Ave is named because they were all from California
13:25 See that house on the far left? I spent the first two years of my life there! (we moved to town after that) 🙂
Love n shore especially watching pipeline. Some awesome real estate. Wish I could buy some
Luv your music. And you’re just passing my ohana hale on Royal Palm. 😂
I love this one. I keep my heat on in Vermont to keep the house at 73. I have heat on in June sometimes. LOL.
LHS grad here. Go, Mules❤
Wahiawa is mostly military now. The Hawaiians are being priced out.
Love your videos and I'm from Reno Nevada

I grew up on Royal Palm Drive!
Hello from Missouri!
I love your vids ❤
Btw can you please do living in Laie Oahu
Wahiawa is a unique town… a village really that’s… well?… kind of “off the grid” as far as New Developments are concerned but… Lots of History there starting with Kukaneloko birth stones and its link with the military… I’m Hawaiian and retired ARMY living in GA now but WAHIAWA is my hometown! Quick? Do you remember Kim's Kitchen in wahiawa? I was at Schofield Jan 77- Sept 79 C.co 1st/35 inf. Cacti!🫡
Was no longer there in 2004 when I was back there. Thank you for your service brother

58 degrees is tropical in Michigan where I live.
Wow...
A little pricey.
Why did that chicken cross the road? 😊 (to get to your grandmas house?)😊
I heard one saying once..."you can take da boy outta Wahiawa, but you cannot take Wahiawa outta da boy"
I went to the same elementary school and I was bulled join the club born at Tripler and spoke like a Haloe we live next to Lelehula High School
Love your videos.
I don’t know how anyone could afford to buy on military pay.
Maybe I am nostalgic for military housing life, and maybe that isn't what it used to be, but I would rather just live on base/post. You can easily leave and go anywhere anytime without having to pay for your house.
@@GNMi79 that makes sense. when I was at Nellis AFB, I had a married friend (E4) with 3 kids who qualified for welfare even with BAS/BAQ.
If you like hearing helicopters flying low and right over your house so it shakes, Wahiawa is perfect for you!
God help me move there 😢😢

Hahaha! Yes!

Please don't sell out to mainland investors..the local pool is already small..we don't want mainlanders changing the dynamic.

Too far from the water, too cold (for Hawaii), way too expensive, looks like a Haole Go Home ‘hood - did I miss anything?
Over a million for that? Omg. That's horrible.
No wonder families are forced to coming big island.
Beware of all the military and related shenanigans you're bound to encounter
Is that good shenanigans or bad shenanigans? Is Jody hiding in my shrubs?
Wahiawa/Oahu in general is saturated with relationships. 9.9 out of 10 local women have boyfriends. It's annoying.
Lady……that is one CRUMMY NEIGHBORHOOD!!!!!!!
