As a former soldier stationed in Schofield barracks, I had no issues with any Oahu peeps. Always invited to Easter dinners and weekend bbq's.
I want to go back to visit. I spent my last week in Hawaii at Zippys telling the waitresses I will miss Hawaii
Loved my time in Wahiawa! Ate at Maui Mike's twice in one week. Hit the Botanical Gardens. I jogged past that coffee shop in the mornings. My son and caught a movie and ate at Five Guys in Mililani. Woke up with the roosters hahahaha! Took Exit 8 (how we remembered where to go). Love the channel.

I’m from Wahiawa! 😃Definitely no nuts in the brownies. Royal Palm and Glenn Ave have a big lots. Tamura’s (aka Big Way market) and don’t forget Big Way Burger, they had good teri burgers and fries.

I grew up in waipio, a pineapple plantation camp in what is now militani. We lived about 50 yards from kipapa elementary school. Then I went to leilehua intermediate and high school. My friends and I spent a lot of time in wahiawa. I’m in California now. I really miss the Hawaii and of course wahiawa.
Exactly I graduate 1965. It truly was a paradise. Weather Kool and mild. Great time growing up in waipio kipapa elementary school. Everyone was close and helpful
Home away from home for many years I love Wahiawa. I live in aiea now. I just love being here on these islands.

I grew up in Wahiawa and feel it's a special place! God's country.
Yessir, Wahiawa is a Football town. Unfortunately since 2013 ish more & more Wahiawa kids have been recruited to play elsewhere, but also lack of resources compared to other schools have made parents enroll their kids elsewhere. It's impacted a couple of sports/arts programs at Leilehua tbh. They've been in rebuild mode for the last decade but I'm optimistic things will get back on track.
Went to Leilehua High School in 1972/73 and 1973/74. 5000 students at the school in those years. Made the news a few times due to racial riots. We had a few issues but it was a great school. Had many local friends from Wahiawa town. Thanks for the great video. Brings back so many good memories. Looks like a few changes but pretty much the same. ALOHA

I think you might have ADD? Hahaha! You skipped around, and talked about lower and upper Wahiawa. But you never took us there. 🤷🏽♂️ We live way up the heights by the water tower. The absolute highest residential elevation on Oahu. Approx 1,200+ feet above sea level! It’s way cooler and rains every night up here. A lot cooler than Mililani. There are some super nice homes up here. The forest leads down to the river and creek that feed the lake. Swimming holes and bass fishing. Loads of guavas, lilikoi, rose apples, mountain apples, etc. We also often have wild pigs coming into our yards. Sleeping under our lychee tree. Since it’s the end of California Ave., there is hardly any traffic. Just the residents. Only sounds are the wind through the tall trees of this tropical mountain rainforest paradise. Unless military is training. Ha! Hardly anybody sells their homes up here. Because it’s so lovely, and the neighbors are so wonderful. Nobody wants to leave. And lower Wahiawa has lots of nice homes. Some with the lake in their backyards. Old time Wahiawa folks still reside in this town. Owners of Wahiawa businesses live here. That Surf the Nations guy isn’t even a local longtime Wahiawa boy. Don’t know why you spent so much time talking to him? You should have gone to visit the owner of the former Dots. At Marians Catering. Or the owner of Sunny Side. She is old school Wahiawa. Or visit Peterson’s Egg Farm and the owners. Born and raised Wahiawa people. Get the real stories and charms of this town.
I also lived in Wahiawa during 1970-1972 in the upper heights. On Kaliko Drive. Right off of California Avenue. We first moved to Wahiawa by way Schofield Barracks. My dad was stationed there and at Fort Shafter during 1967-1972 when he retired. I grew up in Wahiawa and going to their Rose Middle School and Leilehua High School during 1967-1972. After high school I enlisted in the Marine Corps and left the Islands in October 1972. I was fortunate enough to be married in Wahiawa to my wife in 1977. I had met my wife duing her younger sister’s wedding banquet at the Wheeler Air Force Base in 1976. I was stationed at the Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station from 1976-1979. I played for Leilehua with Coach Yoshida, Coach Lolotai, Coach Nomura, and Coach Ohta I think. The last time my family and I were in Wahiawa was 2011. The last time my wife and I were there was 2013. That’s after I retired from my second job from San Diego California. We both thought that we could live there but the good Lord had other plans. We’ve been married for 46 years and live in our own home in Menifee, Riverside County. Boy this brought back a lot of memories. We both still have family members there but not in Wahiawa Town. My parents are both deceased and they left their house in 1995 I think. Anyway lots of Mahalo’s to all my Wahiawa friends and families. James Kawai Kaupe, Jr. Class of 72, Leilehua Mules.
@@jameskawaikaupejrcwo3usmcr573 I knew August Kaupe. My two older brothers played basketball, baseball, and volleyball. You might have known them? Marcus was a good pitcher for Leilehua. He was Outstanding Athlete class of 70. And Mike was Scholar Athlete and Valedictorian class of 72.
I couldn't have said it better myself. I grew up in the heights on Holua Way. I totally agree with you on the Surf the nation guy. There are many articles on that group and they aren't nice. Yeah they bought up the property but their intentions aren't what they make them out to be. He definitely should have interviewed the old time Wahiawa business owners. He really let down his viewers by not heading up California Ave and into the different streets in the heights
I am no expert on them. I have only seen and read what others have expressed. So don’t take this as facts. But, I’ve been told by Wahiawa residents, that Surf the Nations is like a cult. The young ladies who reside in the apartment building behind the storefronts are like prisoners. They are constantly monitored and not allowed to leave or have freedom to contact others outside the organization. There has been testimonies from some of the ladies who “escaped” and broke away from Surf the Nations. They seem to put up a good front with their surfing reference and seemingly Christian base. But it doesn’t seem that they are being transparent with the public.
@kevinkim1804 you are exactly correct. If people would do some research on Surf the Nation they would see what they have done in other countries and how they are not welcomed in several. So big deal they bought up all that property it's only for their benefit not the town of Wahiawa. It definitely is a cult without question
Nuts as protein to keep as insulin friendly as possible for me.. The best Veteran's Day community parade I ever went to was there about 9 years ago. It was a great cross section of the whole area. Folks are very friendly. Heard there is an affordable single family development going in there already underway or very soon. It is a mixed bag and has a vibrant collection of small businesses. I think when the sunshine comes out from the hill top rainfall it shines the brightest. It reminds me a lot like Pahoa where I lived on Big Island. It is an underrated community that does have its charms. Heard they have a great BBQ place there friends have trekked to before hitting North Shore.
Moving out to Oahu next month and my boy that lives in ewa said the same thing, wahiawa has the best Mexican food on island lol

I love the climate in Wahiawa-nice and cool. People are friendly. You have the space to create a lovely garden or visit the gorgeous Wahiawa Botanical Garden. And, yes, Kilani Bakery has the best brownies in the world!
When I was stationed on Schofield. I lived on Schofield, and my house address had Wahiawa as the city. That Jackin the Box has been there for ever they just changed the color of it lol.
Schofield brat here too but didn't have Wahiawa addy. That was in 79-82😭

Only thing I wish was listed was the botanical garden. I only know about it because last summer visit to my parents, we had our family photos done there and I learned how a banyan tree is grown after 20+ years of my family living on Oahu

So in the seventies, we were married in the Wahiawa Botanical Gardens while we were living in Waipahu, but later moved to Wahiawa on Lehua St. across from the hospital. I worked in the lab there, so very convenient. It was a small plantation type home with our Japanese landlords living next door in a similar house - they were so sweet, she made me a quilt when our baby was born. It was such a cute little town and I was shocked to find out that when they cleaned up Hotel Street, a lot of that element moved to Wahiawa (saw that on Dog - used to watch just to see the island, he said it was the most dangerous town on Oahu). Anyways, when we last visited a few years ago, the house was gone (and the orchid hedge in front) and there was a big, ugly 2-story box with lots of cars - I imagine it was for a multi-generational family, maybe related to our original landlords or maybe they just sold the lot. Glad to hear that some of that bad element is going away because it really is a nice area and not so expensive - props to Surfers Coffee. We liked that we were close to the North Shore, but also could go into town without too much trouble, although the traffic is so much worse now everywhere. Very happy memories. And back then, fee simple was just getting started - a friend of ours bought a condo as an investment in this new community called Mililani, and the fact that it was fee simple was a big deal. My how times have changed.

FYI.... Surf The Nations/Surfer's Coffee has bought the building/property that was Top Hat & Club Wahiawa, >10yrs or so. Top Hat has relocated to N Cane st., close proximity to Sunnyside restaurant, Tanya's Grill & Pies & Da Bus/Wahiawa Transit station...

Went to Wahiawa Baptist in 80-82 and 8th grade at whateva school was further down the road. With a head bully named Zina. Big ol Hawaiian girl🤣

Am no realtor but have been lifelong(40+ years) 96786 resident. But, suspect, that area btwn Wahiawa Botanical & Royal Palm is priced $775k- $975k+. The area from LHS up toward Iliahi elementary/water tower will price out as roughly the same price range. Neighborhood from Lake View Circle toward Schofield Barracks will price out btwn $600k-$800k+. As have said b4, am no realtor so this just guesstimation...BTW...Nuts in my brownies & Shige's Saimin all day/any day!

When my house sells in Florida I am moving to Wahiawa. Oahu is the best place in the world to be a surfer. Northwest Florida isn't. Tom of Surfers Coffee is really nice and a good friend of Zeke and Amanda, my surfing friends.
Inner light surf shop is cool and those Pensacola sunsets are nice, but the gulf is better for tailing red fish than riding fish tail twin fins 😁🤙🏽
@@movingtohawaii Innerlight Surf Shops are great! Our beaches and water are beautiful and great for fishing. It is hard being a surfer here but we do get waves about 60 days a year.
