If you're looking to move from the mainland/overseas, let the Hawaiian culture & Spirit of Aloha change you! Don't try to change it. That's where alot of people get into pilikia(trouble). Comedian "Fluffy" iglesias said it best..."Hawaiian time=You get there when you get there!"

I used to live in Kailua and had the privilege for working with the well-known Realtor, Joel Cacasso, in the early millennium. One thing people don't realize is that it does get cold in the winter. Kailua beachfront can have 40 miles per hour winds and only be 60ish degrees with a literal windchill.

Moving... Already purchased... but... One of the things we find amusing every time we visited before moving is the heat/humidity. Every time people apologized for the heat and humidity. We have to explain we're visiting from a place that has 95 degree temps, 80%+ humidity so your 88 degrees and 66% humidity is cool and dry. Not to mention our afternoon hurricanes nearly every day in the wet season. We're ok with the rain level of just about everywhere except super wet places where we are not moving to.
I'm sure we'll get used to it, but not all that much. Plus we have family on the islands... so we're making efforts to have our new home work for us.

Aloha from southwest Florida! Born and raised on Oahu - Roosevelt grad Class of ‘65; mother was Class of ‘43. Moved here 33 years ago, mainly due to the high cost of housing and living. Now, it’s crazy over here, but still much less than Oahu. Thankfully, it wasn’t bad when we first arrived, so we were able to buy a home, which has increased in value by over 400%. Roaches and lizards, no surprise. A/C is an absolute must!!

What Sucks about living in Hawaii? Here are a few:
1.Tourism Overload: There are too many tourists,
2.Dependence on Tourism: Too many people rely on tourism, which is unstable. Finding ways to diversify is better for all.
3.Ineffective Policies: Some policies, particularly those from the Democratic side, seem to benefit only politicians and their donors rather than the general populace.
4.Hawaiian Electric's Policies: Hawaiian Electric’s current practices are problematic. For instance, I have a solar system and battery backup, yet I’m still required to pay $150 a month for a service I don’t use. It doesn’t make sense to mandate this kind of connection and fee structure.
5.Military Presence: The large military presence is causing environmental issues, including contamination of our drinking water and ocean bays. A potential solution could be to reduce or transition military activities on the islands.
In summary, Hawaii once thrived under effective management and sustainable practices. Today, the island faces challenges due to overpopulation and a lack of resources. With limited land and ocean resources, we rely too heavily on external sources for food and essentials.
Additionally, there are concerns about Hawaiian Electric’s financial dealings. It’s noteworthy that Timothy E. Johns, the board chair of Hawaiian Electric, is also the President of an Zypher insurance company. The very same company involved in the Maui fire compensation. This raises questions about the fairness of the $4 billion compensation process and the impact on local Stakeholders. (The victims of the Hawaiian Electric Fire!) Follow the money, Timothy E. Johns the CEO, and board chair of Hawaiian Electric is going to pay 4 Billion dollars to Zypher Insurance that Timothy E. Johns, just-so-happens to be the President!. The Governor is on-board with it all! Yet nobody has a problem with that!
Lastly, while all this is going on what is Hawaii’s Governor focused on, Well he's pushing to ban oil sales in the U.S., He is trying to stop the import and sells of gas and oil in all 50 states. And Hawaii has filed suit against every state in America for the import and sale of oil and gas! Yep that's right We can't sustain ourselves we depend on shipment of goods. Yet the governor wants to ban the fuel the ships use to bring our foos to the state! Hawaii's key infrastructure is powered by You got it! Gas and oil! Here's the story: www.hawaiifreepress.com/Articles-Main/ID/41459/Hawaii-wants-to-force-an-oil-ban-on-the-rest-of-the-country
These are some of the key frustrations and challenges faced by residents in Hawaii. In short This is WHAT SUCKS ABOUT LIVING IN HAWAII!

Ditto. if there is a ban on oil/gas, then Matson, Young Brothers, (not as big as Maersk) can't deliver anything to the islands. We still would need Cargo planes, that rely on gas. there are no longer sugar and pineapple plantations; the agricultural field is good to have, but it doesn't pay that much money; sustainable living (taro: I wonder if you need lots of water). you have the small Farmer's Markets (on the weekend) vs. going to a: Times Market/Star Supermarket, KTA market, Sack N' Save, Foodland, Down To Earth store, Safeway or a Whole (paycheck) Foods. The Jones Act (Merchant Marine Act of 1920) is one thing that help raise the cost of any goods to Hawai'i; it is a security thing. (Like a slow boat from China (with goods), it skips Hawai'i, then, it must go to California, to Matson (San Francisco); then, the goods get shipped back to Hawai'i, which product price gets trickled down to the consumers, at a higher price markup.) SMH... The salt air and moisture could ruin your laptop computer. (People might complain about some HPD (the local police station officers) staff don't do their job quick, correctly and efficiently. Some (not all) homeless people, should be put into a state hospital than jail/prison, because of undiagosed mental illness issues, with specialists: psychologists, psychiatrists, socail workers, intake workers, behavioral therapists. You can guide the horse to drink the water, but you can't force the horse to drink the water.) There is no Trailer Park or RV home areas; there are affordable housing for homeless people in truck containers on Sand Island; Waianae has a homeless encampment next to a fishing pier (RIP to aunt(y) Twinkle Borge). The HART mass transit (people hardly go on that thing); it might cost too much money to expand it until Ala Moana Shopping Center, from Kapolei. It was supposed to extend to the University of Hawaii at Manoa (the state's public university). the state could go bankrupt; the endless construction on Dillingham Blvd. (in Kalihi) might make the roads even worse (too many potholes). Bring back the Super Ferry, so that the people from the Westside (Nanakuli, Waianae, Makaha) can not be stuck in the 2 lane gridlock traffic jam (H1/H2 merge) in order to get into town for work. Is the Aloha Spirit dying each year ? Maybe; I could be wrong.

Born and raised in oahu. 60 percent Hawaiian. Left Kailua oahu because of the cost of living. You forgot to tell them how the state keeps tacking on taxes to the people. And the car registration is around 600.00 a yr and then your safety check is 100.00 a yr to drive your car on the roads. The roads are horrible and there construction to fix the freeway takes forever to be completed. If you buy a suv car there's hard to park your car. The property taxes are out of this world for a chicken coupe . Homeless is also a major problem. Traffic is horrible. I moved to Ohio and will never buy a home in Hawaii. I came back in July and seen how much in changed. A raw fish and poi and local food I think food land is the best place. $35 for good local food. Youngs fish market is also a good place to eat Hawaiian food.

Aloha I own a property in O'ahu and I find the rental options ridicules. I think I could benefit more if I was able to air bnb but finding client who want to rent for a month at a time is difficult. also owning a property on a tropical island is brutal on wood frame homes, the termite eat through wooden homes really quick. especially in locations like where my property is located in Maunawili. So property maintenance cost are high. We do eventually plan on returning to O'ahu to live, the culture and pace of life our great neighborhood Ohana is what we miss the most. Buying food at the big warehouse stores like costco and sam club is the way to survive in O'ahu and of course two refrigerators and a freezer are a must as in a small portable generator for the occasions there are brownouts. Of course if you can afford solar power system and back up battery then your utility bill will be a lot less and no need for a generator.

Pool, water view, and she has a small 500 sq ft guest ohana that she has offered to me. She is looking into the legal aspects of my renting-to-own this little house, but either way it's mine to live in if I just want to rent as a tenant. She has suggested $700 a month and free utilities. It sounds like heaven, compared to the $1200 a month I am wasting in ugly Philly in the same size apt. My concerns are 1) island fever - after four days in Florida I couldn't wait to go home due to the constant sun and heat. 2) Roaches and lizards - I am hearing horror stories about both! 3) I can't drive due to a medical condition, so would I be able to get around without a car? and 4) I worry about being a non-Hawaiian because my cousin has experienced hostility, which I totally understand because of the history in Hawai'i. Half of me really wants to go, half of me is nervous. Does this sound like an ideal situation? Maybe with time I could get used to these things? Would love to hear your thoughts. Mahalo!

Condos in Hawaii blow. Maintenance just goes up endlessly. The BODs act like dictators. They’re really not meant for locals. And, people who own them as investment can’t really rent them at much of a profit nor airBB them because of laws and condo rules. If you own a condo, you’ll end up fighting your own BOD and paying for your lawyers to fight their lawyers (that you also pay for), so they stop raising maintenance fees because they want to do special assessments all the time because the BOD mismanaged the general fund.

    • @H..M..

IMO that(bad BOD’s) is everywhere. I lived in a condo in Vegas almost 40 years ago and we removed the BOD for mismanagement. The biggest problem is that most of the people who want to do that type of thing are the people who shouldn’t, and the people who should are too busy doing other things. I will never live in a condo again.

The UV index in Hawaii is nothing compared to living here in Nevada.
It is easy to get a bad sunburn here in the middle of winter on a clear sky day with a high of 45°F.

Lack of high paying jobs. I lived on both Oahu and San Jose, California. If you’re not a doctor or in big tech, buying a house will be very hard.

I would say the traffic sucks, August heat is rough if you come from a dry climate. Eating out is outrageously expensive. For me it just comes down to money if I made 500k. I'd live there. Agreed, I saw a lot of vacancies, having said all that Oahu is an amazing place, hence the high home prices 🤑.

Another thing about the new anti-Aloha movement here in Hawaii is that much of the interactions you will come to learn with “locals“ include people using this ‘talking down to you’ method. I was raised and partially an Asian household, so I’m so I’m able to identify this problem and it is just almost like a strictness when scolding someone if they think they know better than you will try to embarrass you in front of everybody very anti-Aloha. This has now become a new form of communication here in Hawaii. It is so sad.

Living in Oregon is like living in the UK. 9 months of Lousy weather and one month of hell heat and the other two no comment. If you only know what's going on here on the mainland, you would never visit here again. I promise. Comment back, and we can discuss why I'm moving there and leaving here for good. I'm getting my little slice of paradise before It's too late. Aloha and I hope you never have to suffer again coming to the mainland and my advice! Stay where you're at. This place is a hell hole.

I’m Hawaiian and was born in Hawaii. The Aloha spirit spirit is dead. There are too many people that I’ve moved here. In comparison to other “states“ this would probably be the closest you will find to a Third World country.

    Aloha Maila,
Hawaii is the best place I ever lived.
Nothing sucks about living in Hawaii. You suck 😅
The cost of living is high, and it sucks if you’re broke!
I lived in Puerto Rico for 20 years, and over 30 years in New York City… I moved to Hawaii 3 years ago.
    My views on this subject…
    1. The Weather: By far Hawaii has the most pleasant and stable weather in the world. You’re being a little dramatic with the wind, rain and sun. Try living in Louisiana, Kuwait, Afghanistan or Alaska 😅
    2. Isolation: I love living away from the craziness of the mainland.
    3. Traffic: I live in Honolulu.. traffic is no problem for me. Try California or New York City traffic.
    4. Parking: Compared to New York City, parking is not an issue in Hawaii. I also own my parking space.
    5. Culture: I grew up i Puerto Rico, I understand the culture and island life.
    6. Cost of living: Hawaii cost of living is high. Ensure your finances are good before moving here. Moving to Hawaii from New York City it wasn’t a shock for me.
    7. Condo vs Home: it depends, I am single so, I bought a new condo in Honolulu. Low HOA and Amazing views.
    8. Bugs/Insects: I live in the city, I haven’t seen much bugs or mosquitoes, just big roaches at the park.
    9. Natural Disasters: There is lower risk here for natural disasters compared to living in the East Coast or the Caribbean.
    10. Graffiti: Are you kidding me. Try living in the South Bronx in the 70-80 and riding the train.
    11. Golfing: I golf almost everyday. The golf courses are the best ⛳️
    12. Health and Safety: Hawaii is the safest and happiest place to live. Do your research.
The older gentleman in blue, said it best, nothing sucks, it’s always Aloha 🤙
Moving to Hawaii was the best decision I’ve ever made 🤙
    Mahalo

Our surf culture is pilau. Surfers are territorial and are punks in the water. If you're a non-local or local to a new break you will not feel welcomed. There's no aloha at the surf break. I became a good surfer and was apart of the toxic surf culture and quit surfing because of the attitudes of the territorial surfers. No one owns the wave!

Also, homelessness is rampant and the drug addiction especially to things like crystal meth are taking over a lot of the young people. If you drive a vehicle, you’ll notice that going into and out of many driveways and parking lots, the bottom of your car will scrape and caused damage to your vehicle. I would like to move to a better place like Florida or California or Texas. If you want to be near the ocean and live in the civilized, place with law and order. 🙂
