This is extremely similar to the Hamilton Khaki's mechanical. I only say that since it's my main daily beater. This Seiko is cool look to it. Simplistic. It isn't flashy, yet, retains that level of interest towards older souls. I think these kinds of pieces stand out more than flashy stainless steel bracelets, and all of that jazz, which to the untrained eye, seem like a WalMart watch. Wearing such a piece shouldn't make some form of modernized statement about how technological advanced you are or the amount of money you have, but, that you appreciate the pure and rich history of a movement enough to wear it, knowing that you can rely on just good old-fashioned engineering. Those are the people I like having a chat with whenever I see one in our shop. I digress. :-)
Really like the SNK 809. I have had three and have sold them to get the "upgrade" to the 4r35/36 and 6r15. But the owners user guide suggests that you do not play golf. tennis or any active sports with. Same with my few month old Hamilton watches with the H 10 movement. The same with my Hamilton Khaki mechanical with the 2802 manual wind. I had the manual wind regulated to 0 seconds +or-, 0 beat error and 305 amplitude. Played nine holes of golf with the mechanical and now off + or - 3 seconds, beat error .3 and amplitude of 290. That is just nine holes. Played nine holes with a Seiko 4r35. Took it out of adjustment. Played with my Seiko SARB 033. Now the amplitude will not go over 220. So there is something to be said for the old 7s26. I played twenty wears with one and did not phase it. This is all documented with a Time Grapher. So if you do anything more rough than watch You Tube videos with these newer albeit "modern" movements with nice features heed the user manual instructions. Or you will end up with some watch box queens that will be damaged with "harsh" use. I have played with a 1948 Hamilton manual wind (748 movement), a 1953 Bulova automatic and a 1960 Hamilton automatic (Certina) with no issues. Remember the original Seiko 5 was intended for the working person that did not have a plethora of watches. Only one to wear at work, play and dress. Heretofore the only brands of automatic that have said specifically it is OK to play golf with is Rolex and Omega. A chat assistant at Longenes told me that was OK but cold not find anything in their user manual that would support that statement. So these rough and tumble "field watches" may not be suitable to play anything more active than chess. So don't plan on playing polo with your JLC Reverso. It recommends against iy in the manual.
@@ChronometerCheck Just want to make sure people know what they are getting into when they make a purchase. I have six watches that are too nice for work that I cannot use during recreation time. I stop at the grocery and doctors etc on the way home from work. Since I do not wear them during this time or during recreation time that leaves home time. I wore a small Citizen field watch for 2 years straight. It is a good watch with great lum, but it is a little too small for my preference. I also wanted an automatic watch, which the Citizen was not. After about half-a-year of research, I settled on buying this Seiko. The size is perfect and I love the atheistics of it. I can read the time for a short while after I put a flashlight to it, but it does not last too long. It is hard to read the time in low light situations. The second one has been back one time, each repair at approx $125 has been at my cost, all returns/repairs were as a result of the watches stopping for no apparent reason, one of them was losing time to such an extent that it would be roughly ten minutes slow each week. @@maximus3233 Hardlex is pretty durable. I've had plenty of Seiko 5s, and 2 SKXs with hardlex. Other than that, not more than a little nick.
@@ChronometerCheck Thanks for the information. This was very helpful. Never owned an Seiko watch so i was very confused but now thanks once again for clearing my doubts.
@@maximus3233 Mine's got a few micro scratches, but it seems very durable and don't think I'll break. It's only when you try to look for them, you end up noticing the micro-scratches otherwise those are barely noticeable because of the black dial. However, the brushed stainless steel case did end up getting a few scratches on the lugs and bezel. But I cannot complain as Seiko 5s are a great first mechanical watches to buy for the price and you don't need to be very cautious of handling them with much care. If it is to your taste, look into SNZG13 (or it's newer counterpart) instead of 15 as the former comes with polished stainless steel case instead of the brushed one. It is quite difficult to get a polished stainless steel case scratched, in comparison. Good luck with your first mechanical watch. ❤️

And I have to mention that my Khaki is currently running at +0.81 sec. per day, measured over 2 months on wrist. Unreal. ANd I wear it while working on my car.
I just wish it was smaller. A bit too big for a field watch IMO. I would’ve liked to see them size it down a bit, give it a hand winding movement, and make it a serious competitor to the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical.

There is another video somewhere around that actually mentions the 5KX bracelets fitting these new Field watches. The video is titled something along those lines anyways.
@@GODSPEEDseven Guessing you mean the "dressKX" models? I believe they have 20mm lug widths also, unlike the dive watch 5KX variants, which have 22mm. Also I don't think any of them come in a satin/sandblasted version, so unlikely I'd be able to find one to match this particular reference I have here, but could definitely be an option if you have a brushed/polished variant.

Hey, you learn something new every day! I wasn't aware of that. Would have assumed that in the field a domed crystal would make weird viewing angles during crucial missions, etc.
@@ChronometerCheck well, when I say heavily domed, most of the curvature was at the extreme edge. It was a different look because it's expensive to reproduce in glass or sapphire

I think a comparison between the three would be fantastic, thanks for the suggestion. I do agree, I enjoyed the SNK80x lineup as well, but it's quite possible Seiko will take the lineup and refresh it as well!
can you re-measure your wrists? I have 6" and a 51mm lug-to-lug at 44m just covers the whole flat side of a wrist. But a 39 looks the same on your 7"? I'm confused
I like it, but then I look down at the Timex Weekender on my wrist and it feels a little redundant for me. I'm sure it's a lot quieter (my cats make less noise than this watch), but I feel like I need to look higher up the chain for my next watch. Great vid, thanks!
Islander Field Watch gives you all this plus screw-down crown and sapphire front and back crystals and AR coating for the same money. Seiko movement, too, and BETTER LUME.
It's a satin/blasted finish so can be quite difficult to find. If you can't find a sandblasted, the next best thing would be a brushed bracelet, but it wouldn't match perfectly.

I have the one on your wrist, any recommendations for send in time calibration? I did the smart watch thing for 10 years and it doesn't hold up. I'm at plus 2 mins a day
Plus 2 mins a day is VERY fast. It's very possible it is magnetized, which can very easily be fixed with a ~$10 demagnetizer. Most half decent jewelers or watchmakers have them and will often demagnetize for free

I have about 6.5" wrists, to give you ani dea
Are you 12?
Cool, appreciate it! Just ordered it. If it doesn't fit, it'll be a great present for my father haha.@@ChronometerCheck
No, I am in my 20s. Just got unlucky with my wrist circumference genetics. Unfortunately no amount of exercise can increase wrist size. At least it makes my forearms look larger haha.@@NICK_1979
NOTE: The DAY OF WEEK dial contains several printed translations on the same wheel. If you get a watch and some weird name is present on the DAY setting, do not panic. Pull the winding stem out ONE click. The days of week can be quickly perused and reset by rotating the stem to the correct value and pressing the stem back in.
The numeric value for the date, the hour and the minute hand settings are all adjusted by pulling the winding stem TWO clicks.
Man, the 4r36 is a stellar movement.
I've been wearing my SNZG15 daily for the past 3 years and it is very versatile. A couple of strap swaps and it'll complement any attire.
Did the Hardlex Crystal scratched in those years?? I'am planning to buy this one. Thanks
@@maximus3233 Hardlex is pretty durable. I've had plenty of Seiko 5s, and 2 SKXs with hardlex. Only a noticable scratch on one of them, as I slid my hand between the seat of my car and the dashboard and it scratched against something on the way down. Like nails on a chalkboard.
@@sidonculous Thanks man for sharing your experience, it is very helpful. Yeah! Soon will be owning my first Seiko😉☺️
I just ordered the Hamilton 38 mm field watch, manual wind, no date. I also ordered a Hamilton 42 mm field watch with automatic and day-date function.. They have not arrived yet. And please do try a full unboxing. When done right it really adds to the story.. Not boring at all.
That Hamilton is gorgeous! Oh and the Seikos too.
Great review, very thorough. Made me look at the watch I had not thought of for my grandson or around the yard.
Thank you very much, Blen. Have a good one!
And I have to mention that my Khaki is currently running at +0.81 sec. per day, measured over 2 months on wrist. Unreal. ANd I wear it while working on my car.
Regarding the reflexions you should use a polarizer filter on the camera. Btw, thanks for the good review!
Thanks for the review. I’m disappointed how thick they made it. 13.2mm is diver watch thick.
I hear you on that!
True.. my Sinn U50 is 11.1mm
Glad you mentioned NATO as my favourite watch is the 7A28-7120 - £250 in the 80s and now - well - stratospheric for a good one.
Looks nice but it’s quite thick. I think Seiko and other makers over prioritize the see thru case back which adds unwanted thickness.
Whats it like at night..? Thanks
I just wish it was smaller. A bit too big for a field watch IMO. I would’ve liked to see them size it down a bit, give it a hand winding movement, and make it a serious competitor to the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical.
it's already small, 39mm man. The former was 42mm.
Your wish has been granted, there is a 36mm version now
@@ifjfgvjfidifijfwhich is ridiculously small
Got my olive green 4R36 yesterday and did a test with the atomic clock, it was fast by 6 seconds in a day - maybe too enthusiastic on the therapeutic hand wind!
Perhaps I'm easy to please but I feel like thats actually quite good for a mechanical watch in this price range.
MAMACOO's always amazes me how much beauty and precision are added to the parts of watch 99% of people will never see.
Nice video 😄I do miss the second hand on my smartwatches. The physical hands rotating on a watch face are just a satisfying movement of time...
Boldr Venture xlnt field watch. I’ve owned Omega’s Rolexes, over-engineered. My Seiko Willard, is my EDC. Timex’s are good for work & cost-effective. Longines, lugs too long. COSC, Chronometer, Seiko Astron GPS, Solar most accurate. Keep costs down, good for marriage, kids (know what I mean?).
Great suggestions!

Nice review! I wish Seiko would use the syringe hour and minute style hands from the SNK809. Hamilton uses the syringe style also. Never been a fan of sword hands, but otherwise, a great looking watch!
I really prefer the crown position. I hope more Seiko 5's would borrow that.
I’m definitely getting it. I’m just going to wait until they sell at a big discount. Hopefully uncle seiko and Strapcode make some bracelets for it
Agreed, can definitely see this one going below MSRP. Would love to see a bead-blasted bracelet to match. Looking forward to it.
@@ChronometerCheck Yes, you are absolutely right. I should have checked before commenting.
It wasn't a video either; Shane from Relative Time posted a photo of a brushed case field with a brushed/polished bracelet from Strapcode that fits the dressKX.
Sorry for that misinformation!!
It's also not really a look I dig, I like brushed case field watches, but not nearly as much as blasted. I'd really like to see a blasted bracelet to fit this case you reviewed. 🤞
@@GODSPEEDseven Don't sweat it all, I appreciate you letting me know about this in the first place! I'm with you there. The blasted is such a cool look. Part of the reason I'm so happy with the model in this video, is their blasted finish is even more well done than that of the previous line's.
I daily this watch and like it. It's a little thick, but it's nice. I had a situation lately where a very wealthy client noticed the watch and asked if it was an IWC. No....just a Seiko.
That's the beauty of a well-crafted watch. The price is usually irrelevant and they often look much better than their price might suggest
It looks good but I prefer smaller and lighter weight so I went with the Alba AQPJ402 instead.
Thank you for sharing and definitely getting one 👍🏼
Which model you had the olive color one?
I'm Arab so I immediately fell in love with this watch! I hope that I find it

@@darrylwarren4241 the days are written in Arabic
can't beat the Seiko RAF Gen 1 Chrono AFAIK!
The Seiko 5 not having hacking was always a deal breaker for me. Glad this changed. Might get this one.
Awesome review! Where is the NATO strap from? I need!!
Actually a traditional field watch IS domed, because traditionally it would be acrylic in the old days, and they were always heavily domed.
Hey, you learn something new every day! I wasn't aware of that. Would have assumed that in the field a domed crystal would make weird viewing angles during crucial missions, etc.
@@ChronometerCheck well, when I say heavily domed, most of the curvature was at the extreme edge. It was a different look because it's expensive to reproduce in glass or sapphire
does it comes in quartz too?
The lack of hacking never really bothered me but I always like the hand winding is a nice feature to get one going Is a nice feature
They're definitely "nice to have" features, although not completely necessary.
That’s why I fitted an NH36 into my SNK809. The hand winding is nice.
yea, if it's your everyday watch you don't need hand winding, you need day-date complication more
that logo killing the watch
Yeah, very hit/miss. I used to hate it but have grown to enjoy it.
The 4r36 has really good accuracy in my experience.
My 4R35 is +3 a day. I believe 4R36 is just including the day…? It’s rated way worse, though. I hear it’s mainly a luck of the draw
Buy a circular polarizing filter for the front of your close up lens. Will cut reflections.
Love it. If I could have all my watches have a domed glass I would choose to. Great review, thanks for letting us know about this watch I am very tempted, cheers!
I am a huge fan of domed crystals as well. Cheers.
@@ChronometerCheck is it just the style military or the watch is also tough or somehow military standard
@@Ajnihah7 Definitely not up to any specific military standard. Just a military style watch.
I like convex as well.Like the 2nd gen monster.
When it comes to fine imitation watches, MAMACOO delivers. I've bought from them several times, and I've never been let down.
since you have the snk809 and the hamilton maybe in the in-depth review do a segment with a proper comparison between them.. these seem nice but it still makes me sad that the snk80x is gone. it was such a great little affordable field watch..
I think a comparison between the three would be fantastic, thanks for the suggestion.
I do agree, I enjoyed the SNK80x lineup as well, but it's quite possible Seiko will take the lineup and refresh it as well!
Wow a domed hardlex crystal. How long before it gets its first scratch?
I have a 16 cm wrist will it suit me ? I really like that khaki brown dial
can you re-measure your wrists? I have 6" and a 51mm lug-to-lug at 44m just covers the whole flat side of a wrist. But a 39 looks the same on your 7"? I'm confused
Can you please provide the model and/or link to the Hamilton you have on your wrist on this video
Can you recommend a metal band watch for this particular model? Not sure if it is a brush metal or a silver tone?
It's a satin/blasted finish so can be quite difficult to find. If you can't find a sandblasted, the next best thing would be a brushed bracelet, but it wouldn't match perfectly.
@@ChronometerCheck Thank you.
I have the green one and love it. Question, does this have raised hour markers or is it flat printed? Mine are raised / applied on the 033.
Yes, they are applied on all of them I believe. Can definitely look flat on video in some lighting though, so I understand the confusion!
@@ChronometerCheck thanks so much
This is much better built than, say, a Timex Expedition. But it also looks exactly like one. At 5x the price.
The finish, build quality and movement are objectively better. Is it worth the extra cost? That's of course up to the buyer.

Pulsar makes some really interesting field watches. They may not have automatic movements, but the
Pulsar Solar PX3223X, I purchased during a sale. The big plus is that Pulsar watches come with a Seiko 3 year warranty. A good watch, at a good price, with a good warranty period.
Please no offense but I liken quartz movement to electric cars. There effencient , good gas mileage but there is something about a gas motor. "Automatic"
Pulsar Lorus Seiko it's all the same company Seiko make solar powered watches as well, the best watch is the one you wear with pride, you like the look of and fulfills your requirements just don't spend money to appease someone who thinks that their opinion is worth more than yours, especially when their opinion is likely to cost you lots of money.
Hi there. Where can I purchase a watchstrap like yours? With the webbing that runs behind the watch.
I have the one on your wrist, any recommendations for send in time calibration? I did the smart watch thing for 10 years and it doesn't hold up. I'm at plus 2 mins a day
please apologize my typing I've been on vacation for 2 weeks
Plus 2 mins a day is VERY fast. It's very possible it is magnetized, which can very easily be fixed with a ~$10 demagnetizer. Most half decent jewelers or watchmakers have them and will often demagnetize for free
Is there any way to put a sapphire crystal?
Well, that model is a home run!!
In my eyes also!
Cool watch, I hope to bring it home soon 😉

How did you manage to get the watch with the arabic date?
Fantastic video quality. 👌
Is the day color red? On the website it shows both the day and date to be white.

Your video quality is great but may I suggest letting the watch sit in some instances? I found it a little difficult to focus on the dial when you were holding it throughout the video. There’s a lot of small movements. Hope this helps!
Is it better than SNGZ15K1?
Harrow leather strap and sapphire dome upgrade on mine, great everyday watch
Sapphire upgrade is a great idea! Fantastic everyday watch indeed
Beautiful watch, but the mineral glass/hardlex crystal is an insurmountable obstacle to me buying it. I would have happily paid more for sapphire with the understanding that a domed sapphire would be costly.
That Japanese date looks amazing but I can’t seem to find one with japanese dates. Do you know where I can find one?
Yeah - find models that end in SRPGJ1, not SRPGK1
That new Seiko is really nice - much clearer dial
I like the domed crystal, but is it glass or sapphire?
Checked it out at a local watch store. Not a fan. Very thick, especially with the supplied band that runs under the watch. Had to rotate the wrist fully to get a good view of the face. Picked up a SUR493 instead. Not a chronometer but good looking. YMMV
Would you recommend this or Vostok Amphibia?
