The thing with Seiko pricing is that it drops. The SRPGs are already down to around 19,000 yen here in Japan, so like 123 GBP. The SNZG and SNK have both been out long enough that their prices have bottomed out long ago. Great comparison of the three models!
Hey Dave! How do the other models compare in your region? Here in the UK, this new model is still easily double the cost of the others. Seems us UK folk don't get very many good horological deals 😅
@@BensWatchClub The SNKs are around 10,000 yen ($88), the SNZG 14,000 yen ($120) and the SRPGs are around 18,500 yen ($160). But when they launched they were closer to 30,000 yen ($260). So they've already dropped substantially since they were released. But I feel like the SNZG has been going up recently, it used to be cheaper.
I think the newer model is by far the smartest, but the footage of all three side-by-side suggests that daytime legibility has taken a big step backwards versus the older printed dials.
I bought mine a while ago, when the normal full price for it was about 30% cheaper, and I bought it on sale, so I got it for about 50% of what it costs today. I thought I'd love it. I actually don't like it and never wear it - it's a pain to get going when it stopped, and that crown is tiny and recessed and a pain to pull when you need to set the time, which I do every time I wear it because I don't wear any watch all the time. Also it's a pain to set the day and date (particularly since the day is not always in English), so I usually just don't, so it devotes a largeish portion of the dial to a day and date which are just plain wrong. It's actually the watch that made me realize I like neither date nor day complications, and as such I never wear it. I should sell it or give it away.
@@tmf866 I understand you. I actually mentioned those points in my previous review and at the end of the video I said that I don't recommend buying that watch. Different Seiko 5 but from the same era. They have only one thing - they look amazing.
I picked up an SRPE "dresskx" and I have to say it is incredible. If Seiko keeps making and selling these oddball watches then I'm fully on board with the new 5 lines
I don't get the watch companies that give the same old line about sapphire is too expensive to upgrade a watch with. A single sapphire crystal upgrade for an SKX can be bought for $50 USD, that's one crystal at retail. In bulk it would be far less, so a price increase like this and still 'hardlex" is ridiculous. It's a shame that Seiko has recently decided to raise their prices but not their quality.
The SNK was my first automatic, the only drawback was the lack of hand winding for me. Not convinced I would consider the new one, just feels like a cash cow.
I own all 3 and I have to say the new one is by far the best. Out of the new batch you chose the least attractive colorway. I've got the SRPG39K1; Blue dial, leather strap and Champagne colored Arabics. Extremely classy and the domed crystal adds nice distortion. I would say if you don't have the 💲for an Alpinist this would make a great budget alternative. Also, I don't think it's quite fair to compare it price wise to the two older watches that have been out for ages; clearly if those were being released now, they would cost more and the difference in price wouldn't be nearly as much!
I habe the SNK805 - replaced the Movement with an NH36, The crystal with a domed saphire crystal. And the hands with mercedes hands. The watch is a real stunner now. I think sapphire replacement is essential for every Seiko5.
I still love my snk809 - wear it daily in the office and I've scratched it plenty. It's cheap enough to replace if I need to but would be even better with more water resistance I agree. Nice to see the 3 models side by side Ben, cheers!
I love my SNK 805, but I have quite large wrists, about 8" it can look lost, the size of the SRPG looks about right 39 - 40", which is my preferred size and £200 is not too bad considering my 805 was pretty much my everyday beater.
I loved my SNK805 for a while, but it's sat unused for years now (bought in '13, probably hasn't been worn regularly for probably 8 of those 10.5 years) - for starters as you say, it looks too small on my wrist (7.75") and for seconds it's always been irritating just how often the time needs resetting on it... Right out of the box it was -23s/day, so it was losing almost 2 minutes per working week - gaining wouldn't bother me as much, but slow running is a definite bugbear... At this point it's nearer 40s/day slow and that's just unacceptably annoying. So it's too inaccurate to wear and not really worth spending money on, so it just sits there unused... I wound up dailying the watch I'd originally intended to wear sparingly (Longines HC - L3.695.4...) which runs about 3s/day fast... I could've bought another cheap automatic or put up with Quartz, but the SNK put me off cheap autos and if I wanted a soulless timepiece I'd just use my phone to check the time.
The new Seiko's are fine. I've dived with one, not deeply, however I've brought my SKX on a shipwreck dive on the Mediterranean to just beyond 200m and it's fine. I think the Seiko 5kx will do 100m plus.
I have all 3 of these watch model in multiple colors. Nothing beat the charm of the SNK. Jomashop had the black SNK on the metal bracelet for $70 last week. I have one, but want t back up. It's an awesome everyday beater.... best watch under $100....ever!
I never wanted the previous Seiko 5 version.... The new ones are great! 100m wr is 300 ft deeper than I will ever go. Hacking and hand winding are a must. Plus the variety of choices is great!
The newest seiko is an attractive field watch but I don't think it merits a $200+ price tag. I'll be waiting for this to go down in price before I add it to my collection. Nice review Ben
Not even close to a downgrade. The movement is way better than the trash 7S26 movement, and the water resistance is improved. As a Watch maker, not having hacking and hand winding on a new watch bought in 2022 is absolutely ridiculous, and you’re absolutely wrong about them having similar reliability, the 7S26 on a time graph machine gets blown out of the water compared to the 4R36
SNK is a legend. I also have the SNZG which is excellent but doesn't have the charisma of the SNK. The SRPG is way overpriced. Usual no nonsense and honest review Ben.
Inclined to agree with those who dislike the new Seiko 5s. The new watch is nice, and definitely has an improved movement. But at the same time there was nothing wrong with the old movements of which I’ve two versions in an SNK807 and SNZF15, and they’ve been solid as a rock. And the new watches are in many cases downgrades over their predecessors (that new field watch for example is comparatively illegible when next to the old ones and the divers are even worse). There’s nothing that justifies the increased cost in my mind for what appears to be in some ways an inferior watch.
SNKs are gonna probably exceed $130 soon once they are sold out at most places. I remember picking them up at ~$50 on Amazon many years ago. nice you used all green models for this comparison
I've seen the SRPD black on a bracelet (on Pete at Chillin' Wit Watches) and it looks stunning but myself I own the sand coloured SNK which was around 70GBP bought from Singapore. I'm not precious about the timegrapher differences between the 7s26 and 4R36 the latter of which which hacks and hand winds. The Seiko shuffle is no real bother on the 7s26 and it can be reasonably hacked by applying a little back pressure on the crown when setting the time. The newer dials and quality of the cases are stunning though, even though I was surprised that there was no screw down crown on the 5KX on my recently purchased dive watch, and also a lack of sapphire isn't that smart from Seiko at that price point. So I'll be buying up the older entry level 5s whenever I see an attractive value proposition. Both Ben and Dave at Just The Watch are responsible for that. At the moment the value on the older 5s is staggering. Seiko have given and taken away but ultimately have taken away because of the price hike versus quality cock ups in areas like alignment, bracelet fitting on end links (see Shane at Relative Time), lack of sapphire crystals and so on. They are fully aware that they're giving nothing away. Great comparison Ben and it's what I needed to know. 👍
Great comparison, and a great no b.s. video as usual, Ben. I own the SNK809. Was considering the SNZG back then, but the size and price made me pick the SNK at the end. For me it's a Seiko cult classic, and love that the design is obviously a hybrid between a Type B Flieger and a field watch. A mini flieger lol? Too bad about the 30m wr, if it was at least 50m it would've been an inprovement. I usually prefer two piece straps to natos, but the original on the SNK felt too itchy to me, so I got a one piece stretch bond strap which is perfect for me. That SRPG looks great, has a nice size, way better wr and of course upgraded movement. I'm in the camp who likes the old 5 badge better than this new 5 Sports one. The old one is timeless and has history, this one feels like it will feel outdated in a near future. Still, no sapphire here and is as you mentioned about double the price as the other two here. Not great in my world. After these couple of years, I guess I'd still prefer my trusty little SNK809.
Had my beautiful SNK805 flieger style watch for six years, It's my go-to beater watch which I wear for dirty DIY jobs at home, and when I'm out in the wilds. It goes everywhere I go. Hill climbing, paddling or swimming/snorkelling in the sea and spending lazy days on sandy beaches. It's got a few scuffs and dings on the case, but still keeps good time and, surprisingly, not a single scratch or chip on its Hardlex crystal. It small and weighs next to nothing on wrist - the perfect watch for all outdoor activities. IMO I think it looks way cooler than the other two watches presented in your excellent review.
May actually have to pick up one of the SNKs or SNZGs, not necessarily for myself but people go crazy over iconic old seikos. Look at the SKX nowadays... My favorite field watch is my Komandirskie 811783 though.
I really like the updated look on the new model. Can’t wait to get one to see how the size fits. As for the price, I think this is just another case that is subject to the law of diminishing marginal returns😁 Low cost entry level watches will always offer the ”best value for money” in a way..
I was in the fence between the SNK and the SRPG, but now I think I prefer the newer one, even if it's overpriced. But I'm gonna buy the SRPG35 which in my opinion is the best color. It will be a nice companion to my 5KX and DressKX! ✌🏽😁
I love my SNK805, and am currently kicking myself for damaging the balance spring while attempting to regulate mine. I'm hoping I can replace it myself but I'm prepared to pay for professional repairs if I can't. I don't mind the new Seiko 5 field watches, but I do wish they kept the crown at 4.
I put my SNK805 strap on the Lorus titanium field watch and it is a big improvement on the original strap👍I have the snk805 on a 22mm leather cliffhanger strap to give it more wrist presence - just felt a little too small on the original strap.
The new one is really more refined than its predecessors ! The SRPG35K1 is really beautifull with its black dial and vintage "old radium" bronze details. This is a versatile watch that will look smart at the office with a nice leather strap and perfect for some snorkeling with a NATO one !
I do really like the new model but you're right the lack of sapphire is a bit of a shame. I have a blue snk and apart from the poor water resistance it's fantastic. Might be looking at this new one though, would be cool to see them side by side in person. Btw, did you manage to find any to work with you? Great work as always 👍
Applications are still open, not found anyone just yet. You can get in touch via the email in my about section if you/someone you know sounds right for the job. Cheers 👍
I also have the blue snk. When I first got it I struggled with finding a reason to wear it. But now, I find myself getting upset because I reach for it everyday
@@WesWatchRoom I don't think I Even wore it once on that terrible strap lol. I've had it on a leather nato and a darker brown soft calf skin. One of my comfortable pieces.
I received a Seiko SNK009 and had to swap the movement for an NH36. I will never buy a watch that lacks handwind capability. These three watches you show are, well, unexciting.
The SNK809 was my first mechanical watch but the band didn’t last longer than a month until I swapped it for leather. I recently picked up the new SRPE in blue and I love it but again I’m waiting on a new jubilee bracelet. I don’t really have a preference between the two but I do think it’s a shame that seiko are ramping their prices up despite not really providing any additional features like a screw down crown.
Very nice review, I like the way you explain all the differences. I'm thinking to buy my first automatic watch and I was thinking about a Seiko 5, more on SNZG09 and SRPG33 although I prefer something more "green" and not military/olive green. I hope Seiko will issue a newer version with more resistant sapphire glass and new colours
I bought a new Seiko 5 for black friday 2019. it was $140 off Macys and I have been dailying it pretty much everyday since then. It's my first real watch and I love it!!
Just re-watched this video - Ben, please never stand in front of the computer doing the Seiko shuffle ever again. My eyes....my eyes!!! Great video matey!
@Daniel Bezares which model? I don't know the exact model number, I'll have to get back to you on that one. It has day/date and it's a seiko 5. Still have the box but I've not actually looked for model number on any paperwork with it being more sentimental to me. I'll see if I can find it....
My SNZG in black is still one of my favorite watches. I have it on a tire-tread rubber strap. I had a blue SNK, my first mechanical watch, but I found it too small and just never wore it. I gave it to a family member. I agree that the new iteration does look good, but I don’t think the jump in price is justified by the modest increase in specs.
This is by far the best comparison video on these particular watches . I own the SNZG09 and the SNK805 , both great watches . Great video , thank you :)
The SNZG is the nicest, more robust looking but since you cannot wind it , it has a nasty habit of just "quitting at 2am" just an example, contrary to the SRPG, wind it a bit and it will keep going for much longer. I own all three of these.
The SNZG09 is by far my favorite Seiko Feild Watch. It's so easy to read at a glance. I'm happy I bought one when I could! I do think I'll be picking up the SRPG33 though. The improved movement and better finishing and nato strap are worth the price increase. Plus the face is nicely detailed.
I just bought an SNZG09 and prefer its look over the newer. Though now that I retired I am finding an automatic wind to not be the best choice for my new laid back lifestyle.
I have the SRPG27 (the one that comes on a bracelet and has brushed/polished finishing) and I love it! Paired it with a StrapCode SRPE bracelet (It works!) and it's been my daily - it gives Explorer vibes
I think it is very smart to reissue an upgraded version. Times change and get more expensive due to inflation, with Corona this is certainly going to be the case. Also expectency changes over time and the old and trusted 7s26 is accumulating as much criticism as Seiko's use of hardlex. Why not then deal with these issues all at once? Thing is you can't keep everybody happy, so you might as well focus on future generations. And honestly it sometimes feels like some people will not be happy either way. That mineral crystal though...
The SNK805 is still my pick. Probably not what Seiko want to hear lol! I brought mine 20 years ago now...my how that time flew (pun intended). Has held up as my daily knockabout (for the most part) in almost as good condition as the day I brought it new. That sandblasted finish really is great for wear and tear. From the 3 in the video, I can't say to me that either 2 of the newer models would have been how I would have designed an upgraded version. In a lot of ways the legibility has dropped with both and I don't like the way they have changed the face design. I would have taken the SNK805, made the 12, 3, 6 and 9 dial markers more prominent with raised lumed numerical indexes and not added to the clutter of the outer chapter ring.
6:17 - Yup, even my sub 100$ Pagani Design/Bersigar Aquaracer homage has a sapphire crystal! I really don't know why Seiko stubbornly hold on to their Hardlex crystal like it's some sort of superior material....
I've got both the SNZG15 and SRPG37, and I'm quite happy with them. The SRPG fits the wrist better, and I've replaced that nato strap with an OEM 20mm 2-piece that matches the one on the SNZG, and added the blasted buckle from said nato.
Great video! I agree with many of your comments and observations on all three. I much prefer the SNK809; wear it on a handsome aftermarket stainless steel band and it looks great on my 6.75" wrist. Get lots of compliments on it, more than any other watch for some reason. Maybe it's the handset and proportions. Really like how it stays out of the way of cuffs, straps, etc., no sharp or protruding crown/guards - and it's so light weight, I wear the watch, the watch doesn't wear me. Don't need hacking or hand winding for a daily wearer with a consistent +/-3 seconds/day accuracy from the factory! The thing about the original SNK is that at a glance it says "classic timepiece."
I got the 140th anniversary 5KX and I'm in love with it. Since I don't dive (hell, I don't even swim) the lack of water-resistance certification does nothing for me. The only thing I'll end up swapping along the way is the bracelet, but I'll wait untill it really needs it.
The SNK809 dial, with the hour markings on the smaller diameter inner ring and the minute markings on the larger diameter outer ring made so much sense, given that the hour hand is shorter and the minute hand is longer. So why did Seiko depart from this excellent arrangement with the SNZG15, merely because the case size was increased? Why not retain the SNK809s perfectly sensible dial layout?
Bought my first automatic last week on an auction. I looked like i got quite a good deal. It's a 4R35-03W0 Prospex samurai which has a MSRP of €650 and i bought it for only 300. And the watch is just 2 months old. I'm totally in love with it🥰 Cheers Ben
It is a great watch - dial and case size! There is no need to compare it to SNK805 vs SNZG09 fitted with outdated calibre. I still have my SNZG15 modded with NH36 though. But recently the hardlex crystal crashed badly inside of the watch just like a front wind of a car. The outside surface of the crystal is kinda ok, but ... I am almost sure that little glass particles could get into calibre over date&day window and I will hardly get it back to normal state.
I have an SNK805 and an SRPG47K1 in the collection, and I love them both for different reasons! I actually think that the SNK805s are under-priced (to counter your argument that the SRPGs are over-priced). In-house movement, finished in China - I still think that's worth far more than the swathe of brands putting Miyota movements finished in China
Great comparison. I own the snzg model myself. I do like the new model with all improved finishing in hidden areas and the improved movement features but I agree with you on the price. Great job as usual Ben. Keep up the good work.
The old models all day everyday and save $100 (or more here in Australia) In my opinion Seiko are starting to price themselves out of the "affordable" market, yet unfortunately are not premium enough to justify their ever increasing prices.
Are you saying this because of these videos or you have tried them on in-person? I have both, an old snkk71k1 and the new dresskx. It is a HUGE difference in quality, two different universe. I recommend to go to the Seiko boutique with your old one and compare it for real.
@@csongormartonszutorisz-szu3999 yes I have been looking at Seiko. As Ben pointed out, no sapphire crystal, dubious quality control on some models and their metal bands are still sub par for the price. The watches may be comparatively cheaper in the UK or US (?) and maybe their shortcomings are justified but they aren't (cheap) here in Australia, so I expect more from my hard earned. You will probably disagree, but I'm going to put it out there; in my opinion dollar for dollar Citizen and especially Casio are far better value for money in the sub $300 market.
The SRPG33 is quite affordable in Asia around 150usd(2021 Dec). Shame about the legibility as I'm looking for an affordable green dial for certain occasions. But I give credit to Seiko for willing to experiment - this was definitely an explicit design decision. You can't say they were totally wrong to do this - In South East Asia the illegible SRPE69K1 is a bestseller on many online stores, and actually sold out in some places during this Christmas season!
My first watch snk807. Sparked my love. Although i broke it after a year like an idiot i never got rid off it . 5 years later bought nh36 and fixed the watch. I think this is the only watch that will never go away
Wish I found you before I bought this Seiko, what a horrible watch. I just lost my citizen BM818 which started double ticking great watch for 10 years with perfect timekeeping no servicing and completely waterproof hundreds of hard work, swimming and snorkeling hours no problem. I was looking for another 10 year no service comfortable watch the Seiko 5 was not it! So top heavy I was constantly having to take it off to complete tasks at work and adjust the position on wrist. So I started looking again and found your Chanel not a watch guy but now I understand why I don't like the uncomfortable Seiko (gave it away) and continued looking through your reviews and settled on the Boldr V Black. Your review was spot on and 2 weeks in the watch it living up to all the good reviews. Was well pleased to see in your teir review that the BM818 was the only Citizen you rated and I came to the same conclusion. But I did want s change and like the automatic idea and this Bolder with 200m I think is the one, if it's not I'll let you know otherwise see you in 10 years thanks for the content. Would have saved me 250bucks if I found this 2 months ago
Seiko seems entrenched in their approach to Hardlex over Sapphire based on MSRP. It's a ridiculous stance as it only pushes buyers to seek out watches with similar looks and specs but with generally superior materials (not to mention AR). I picked up a SRPE57K1F (Sport model with the gilt Dial) because it was deeply discounted from it's regular selling price. Yes the Hardlex bugs me but it was cheap enough it didn't bug me enough not to buy it. Because of Seiko's ongoing quality control issues on their more expensive offerings and the fact that IMHO their pricing usually does not reflect what you're getting for your money, I've been leaning more towards offerings from Citizen and Casio in regards to affordable watches. Plus, I just prefer the Miyota 9000 series and it's higher beat rate to the Seiko 21,600bph standard.
Seiko's new logo is perceived both as a number 5 and a letter S for "Sports". Basically, their new line is "Seiko 5 Sports" series, all having a rating of 100m. It seems like Seiko also discontinued their cheaper "Seiko 5" series.
Do you honestly believe there's any doubt about whether the old 5's reached the end of their production runs some time ago? The only reason they're still for sale is because Seiko made so many of them that it will take a long time to sell them all. If you compare SMRP instead of real-world prices, then the prices of the old 5's are much more similar to those of the new ones. Also, if you compare real-world prices for the old 5's today to several years ago, the prices have doubled, as the end of the supply slowly, ever so slowly comes into view. I think the worst you can accuse Seiko of is not coming right out and publicly saying, "the prices of the old Seiko 5's have been due to us making millions too many units and causing a huge glut. Sorry, but we can't make products at those prices on a permanent basis." And it's their prerogative not to say it if they choose not to, and just to get on with business and let people say what they're going to say.
Gifted a 6-year old SNK809 from my father-in-law. I absolutely love it on the bracelet, 37mm, extremely light, excellent legibility and lume. These new ones lack character.
I have the SNK and I read somewhere that water resistance is underrated so I said what the heck lets test that ……I have been swimming with it for months now and zero issues and I have put it under great stress in water .
I am wearing an SNK809 right now. It is OK but a bit of a pain The improvements needed are obvious: hand winding, crown at 3 o'clock, sapphire crystal and lume mark at the 12 o'clock position. Apart from these, nothing else should change. To cut corners the glass back could be replaced with a solid metal one Shame that Seiko has not cottoned on.
I have a couple of SNZG watches. They're comfortable and reliable, perfect for the weekend. I was disappointed at first that the movement would not hack or hand wind, but having owned a Seiko 5 since 1979, I'm well acquainted with the old Seiko Shuffle and I can live without hacking if need be. While I was happy to hear about the upgraded movement, I was immediately turned off by the price increase. Like you said, it doesn't appear to be an equivalent increase in value added to the watch. I'll pass on these and enjoy both of my SNZGs. Thanks for your review.
This watch was everything i wanted, especially the blue and gold colorway of the SRPG39, but its just abit too big for my skinny 6 inch wrists. i wish it was the same size as the snk8xx, expecially the height
No doubt SNZG09 is my favourite. Is there a quartz version of this or a look a like? I know you said you liked the SNK805 but really!!! A Seiko shake and an almost bukakke shot of it near the end. Dirty boy!
I do like the srpg, but 220€ as they are over here is still abit high of a budget out of the blue. Might get one when I finish Uni as a present to myself. Would be a good step up from my current Timex Expidition Scout I got for finishing school.
I’ve ordered an SNZG today, I have big wrists so the bigger watch would look better on me, and I can’t wait to see it in person. I’ve wanted a nice automatic field watch I can wear to work and this looks like a great option that I didn’t have to pay through the nose for. 👍🏻 Update: it’s here and it’s stunning. Very quickly turning into a favourite.
Despite the excessive price jump for the specs, I like the new model much more, imo applied indices look much more premium, though yes that specific colour variant has low readability, I'd opt for black/white. I actually think the new model has much sleeker design, unfortunately, it's also bigger, I'd love to get back to 38mm. In fact, I'd even go smaller than that potentially. I still mostly wear the 37mm Lorus field watch you recommended some time ago, of which I love the dimensions. What I dislike, though, is the flat-looking dial - applied indices would probably help there.
Just tested the power reserve on my old 7S26A, from a standing point and shaking for about 4-5 min made the watch running for 34 hour, not bad , not bad at all.
I really hate that new 5 logo and as someone with the wrists of a forest fairy I hate that they keep making the field watches bigger. The SNK models are still my choice.
Hi there. These analyzes tend to be tricky, especially in terms of prices, since prices in the gray market are compared with retail prices, especially when they are watches that have been on the market for years and there is enough stock that prices have dropped. It is something similar to what happened with the SKX that everyone showed the gray market price when its retail price was $ 390. Another point that is also forgotten when commenting on the new Seiko collection is the restructuring of the group and the strategies that the group's brands will follow. Seiko is not going to compete with itself through the brands it supplies calibers to. It's shooting yourself in the foot.
I have the SNK809, I put a DD Sapphire Crystal with Blue AR on it and that really made an improvement. Now, I do with the hands were a little longer and might fix that pretty soon. With the new field watch, I think they really missed the chance to lume the numbers.

The SNK805 was my first automatic and it will always hold a special place in my heart. This was a great comparison video Ben. Keep up the great work.
Mine too!
they def have that special sauce. i got the bigger one and gave it to a friend. now he’s hooked too
Ditto. My first Seiko and still THE Boss
Podcastage, did not expect to see you here, but for some reason I'm not too surprised!
I have all 3 of them
The thing with Seiko pricing is that it drops. The SRPGs are already down to around 19,000 yen here in Japan, so like 123 GBP. The SNZG and SNK have both been out long enough that their prices have bottomed out long ago. Great comparison of the three models!
in my country it launch at 150usd, so its a fair price
This is true, here in the my place its equivalent to 170usd for the srpg.
The turtle will drop as well
I think the newer model is by far the smartest, but the footage of all three side-by-side suggests that daytime legibility has taken a big step backwards versus the older printed dials.
It has, was a nightmare to film for this video Stephen haha
That's why I'd choose the SRPG35, better contrasting numbers.
the oldest one looks incredible, has some character.
@@tmf866 yep clearly a pain to setup. And fragile too
@@tmf866 You need quartz watch.Automatic is not for you.
Why buy something with 5 in it?
I picked up an SRPE "dresskx" and I have to say it is incredible. If Seiko keeps making and selling these oddball watches then I'm fully on board with the new 5 lines
I second that. The SRPE line is fantastic.
Good old seiko shake😂😂
Imagine the SNK at 39mm, a 4R36 and sapphire crystal. That would be my perfect field/pilot’s watch.
you can modifying srpg to spyr crstl. also can mode your SNK
@@rubenraj3387 Yes, but find the SNK case size too small for my taste. I don’t like the dials on the new ones as prefer the ‘type B’ dial layout.
Can always upgrade the crystall
So you can buy srph with the same dial
I don't get the watch companies that give the same old line about sapphire is too expensive to upgrade a watch with. A single sapphire crystal upgrade for an SKX can be bought for $50 USD, that's one crystal at retail. In bulk it would be far less, so a price increase like this and still 'hardlex" is ridiculous. It's a shame that Seiko has recently decided to raise their prices but not their quality.
Segment gap
SRPG39 looks amazing on pics, good choice
The chainsaws in the background was Spaghetti Scametti cutting out the middle men
I habe the SNK805 - replaced the Movement with an NH36, The crystal with a domed saphire crystal.
I've done a couple of shipwreck dives myself! Not as deep though. I see you're an ex navy diver. Respect my friend!👍👍
@@brianmsahin Thank you Brian. It was a great career. Of course I'm still diving, once you start, you can't stop!
its a little overpriced in my books - seiko since 2019 in a nutshell
But really seikos are really well-made watches. At least Snk80* is worth its money. Looks nice and pleasant to hold in hands.
It's not exactly overpriced, it's more that it's under-speced, I would say. In other words, it should have a sapphire crystal.
Plus the variety of choices is great!
case too thick idk
Got mine in 2015 for 30USD shipped.
Why put the watch on the HDD which has a quite powerful magnet inside? Great video nonetheless. I am subscribing.
My Seiko 5 is from 1978 and continued working up to this year. Id like it repaired.
Cheers 👍
@@BensWatchClub okay, I'll ask around for you. I really would like to myself but I'm too far away unfortunately.
I also have the blue snk. When I first got it I struggled with finding a reason to wear it. But now, I find myself getting upset because I reach for it everyday
@@tirrelldaveport3671 nice, it's a great everyday wear. Btw, did you swap out the strap. That's the first thing I did after my review
Picked up the grey dial version for USD$170 with free shipping added a grey Barton silicon strap and it looks the business. 👍
I own an snk805 and that 37mm case size is really good. Its gonna make your 40mm watch feel like a plate.
I still wear my grandfather's. I've had it nearly 30yrs. Doesn't miss a beat.
Which one?
In my book the SNK805 is a flieger type B, not a flieger field hybrid. I myself own a a SNZG09, i enjoy it very much
I totally agree with you, I cannot understand why anybody calls it a field watch.
Maybe the lugs?
I like the quality of the old Japan ones and the look of the newer ones but I think the old Japan ones are the ones I go for.
Brushed metallic markers on a field watch is one of the worst design choices IMO. They are almost invisible at certain angles.
Is the value most people talk about from grey markets on Amazon or Seiko/dealers?
6:17 - Yup, even my sub 100$ Pagani Design/Bersigar Aquaracer homage has a sapphire crystal! I really don't know why Seiko stubbornly hold on to their Hardlex crystal like it's some sort of superior material....
I've got both the SNZG15 and SRPG37, and I'm quite happy with them. The SRPG fits the wrist better, and I've replaced that nato strap with an OEM 20mm 2-piece that matches the one on the SNZG, and added the blasted buckle from said nato.
i put president strap on my snzg
I own an SNZG15J1 which I had it modified by changing the seconds hand to a bright orange one ... I just love it .
Why not retain the SNK809s perfectly sensible dial layout?
my old snk805 just stopped working after about 5 years. No impact, no accident, just stopped working
Respect to you for calling out Seiko's recent cash grabs. Not impressed at all with recent offerings.
Bought my first automatic last week on an auction. I looked like i got quite a good deal. It's a 4R35-03W0 Prospex samurai which has a MSRP of €650 and i bought it for only 300. And the watch is just 2 months old. I'm totally in love with it🥰
Cheers Ben
It is a great watch - dial and case size! There is no need to compare it to SNK805 vs SNZG09 fitted with outdated calibre. I still have my SNZG15 modded with NH36 though. But recently the hardlex crystal crashed badly inside of the watch just like a front wind of a car. The outside surface of the crystal is kinda ok, but ... I am almost sure that little glass particles could get into calibre over date&day window and I will hardly get it back to normal state.
calibre is not a big deal for everybody maybe it is for you... i find SNZG better looking by every aspect
9:28 How exactly does increased thickness because of the strap make the watch wear like its bigger in diameter?
Great comparison. I own the snzg model myself. I do like the new model with all improved finishing in hidden areas and the improved movement features but I agree with you on the price. Great job as usual Ben. Keep up the good work.
The old models all day everyday and save $100 (or more here in Australia)
In my opinion Seiko are starting to price themselves out of the "affordable" market, yet unfortunately are not premium enough to justify their ever increasing prices.
Good point.
less details..curver dial.. too thick :/ idk
Gifted a 6-year old SNK809 from my father-in-law. I absolutely love it on the bracelet, 37mm, extremely light, excellent legibility and lume. These new ones lack character.
I wore the smallest seiko 5 on combat operations in east Africa , absolutely nothing wrong with it , never lost time no issues , give it a 10/10
The mineral crystal is certainly a bummer, but I do love my SRPG35.
Ben, you nailed it as always. My choice would go to SNZG. I have one in a blue version. Continue with a good work mate, its highly appreciated.

As a newbie collector, I was looking to get an SKX. Instead I got the Mini Trutle. Not looking to get an SKX anymore.
Something I really like about the SNZ, is that at night when the lume comes on it looks like a totally different watch.
To cut corners the glass back could be replaced with a solid metal one
Shame that Seiko has not cottoned on.
The new SRPG (esp srpg 35) size, crystal, patina dial and hands really phenomenal for me. Can't stop staring at it.
I have the SRPG35 as well and definitely agree. I love that watch.
AWESOME comparison review Ben! Informative and entertaining, I enjoyed it. Thank you!
I prefer the older Seiko 5 over the new ones, but the Orient Defender 2 kills the Seiko 5s old & new!
I’ve ordered an SNZG today, I have big wrists so the bigger watch would look better on me, and I can’t wait to see it in person. I’ve wanted a nice automatic field watch I can wear to work and this looks like a great option that I didn’t have to pay through the nose for. 👍🏻
Update: it’s here and it’s stunning.
Ben, you really have the funniest and best edited videos of watch channels. Keep it up.
I never knew James McAvoy moved from acting in movies to talking about watches on TH-cam lol
SRPG looks really nice, domed glass and raised numbers. Only thing I don't like is that specific textured dial, looks like sandpaper.
Can you review Victorinox Maverick Chronograph Green Dial please?
Gorgeous watch, would love to see a review.
I have the SNK809, I put a DD Sapphire Crystal with Blue AR on it and that really made an improvement. Now, I do with the hands were a little longer and might fix that pretty soon.
With the new field watch, I think they really missed the chance to lume the numbers.
